Björgvin Arnarson and Zackary Arthur in ‘Chucky’ season 3 (Photo by: Shane Mahood/Syfy)
Chucky took a hiatus during season three when the writers and actors went on strike last year. Only four new episodes aired in October, but after the strike ended Chucky finished the season and it’s back on April 9th. When we last left Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), Chucky had dropped a chandelier on the guests at a White House Halloween party. The audience also got to see that Chucky was aging, even in his doll form.
Arthur was at the NBC Universal party for the Television Critics Association in February. We got to catch up with him on Jake and Devon’s relationship and future battles with Chucky. Chucky airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et/Pt on both Syfy and USA.
How are Jake and Devon when we come back?...

A star and a title of Armando Iannucci’s next film project have both emerged, according to World Of Reel.
Ever a busy bee, The Thick Of It creator Armando Iannucci, currently experiencing a late-career shift into playwriting, is apparently working on a new film.
According to World Of Reel, the film’s name is Growth, with Riz Ahmed attached to star. The synopsis apparently reads as follows:
“A tech drama following the founder of a Snapchat-like social media platform, who races to deal with the company’s exponential growth and devastating leak of users’ private content.”
Iannucci’s first foray into playwriting, Pandemonium, opened at the Soho Theatre in London on the 1st of December. Charting the last few years of calm and uneventful government in the UK, the satirist is also working on a stage adaptation of Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove for a West End debut in 2024.

Fusion Entertainment has signed Bria Vinaite, an actress who got her breakout role as a woman living on the economic fringes in Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project.”
The Lithuania-born actress was discovered by filmmaker Baker when she was working in the fashion industry and cast in the lead part of a struggling single mother raising her daughter in a motel. Her performance earned Vinaite multiple award nominations from critics groups including Chicago Film Critics Association and San Diego Film Critics Association.
Since “The Florida Project” debuted in 2017, Vinaite has gone on to act in TV series including “The Oa” and films such as “Balance Not Symmetry” and “Lost in Transmissions.” Next year, she will star in “Pandemonium,” the latest feature from Icelandic filmmaker Anton Sigurdsson. It follows a group of wealthy New Yorkers trapped at a wellness retreat run by a nefarious guru. The film shoots in New Jersey...

London’s Frightfest shows everything from slasher flicks to arty experiments, though I wasn’t prepared for the number of deaths by kitchen utensils
I’m not sure at what point I realised I was losing my grip. Perhaps it was the moment in existential French psychodrama Pandemonium where a recently deceased motorist finds himself being introduced to hell by a 7ft-tall mega-demon; or it could have been the copious vomiting scene in Cobweb, which was the third copious vomiting scene I’d witnessed in 24 hours. Either way, by the time I got to the third day of Frightfest, I realised it was time to go home – even though, for the crowds of gore devotees gathered outside the cinema behind me, this was just the halfway point.

Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.
These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode covers Where the Devil Roams, Pandemonium (feat. Quarxx) & The Sacrifice Game (feat. Jenn Wexler)

Veep creator Armando Iannucci is bringing to London’s West End his first play – a satire on former UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Variety reports that Iannucci – Oscar-nominated for his screenplay In the Loop – has called the play Pandemonium: Being a Scornful Account of the Activities of Mr Boris Johnson and ‘Others’ during the Pandemic and its Aftermath, which will debut at the Soho Theatre on December 1.
The play will be directed by Patrick Marber, previously Oscar-nominated for his Notes on a Scandal screenplay, and a Tony Award winner for Leopoldstadt.
Iannucci is also hard at work on a new stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 political satire Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
Variety quotes Iannucci, one of the UK’s most celebrated political satirists with Veep and previously In the Thick of It skewering the British government’s conduct,...

It’s not an easy task to form a prediction around a show that is made up of perpetually moving pieces. But then again, what is easy about Succession? A show where the Stockholm syndrome-esque undercurrent of love flows begrudgingly underneath all the abuse, betrayal, and straight-up soul-crushing filth. For once, though, I’d like to sit and relish the “I told you so” I’m about to hurl at the Shiv naysayers, even as I compulsively chew my fingernails to the nub at the thought of what the series finale holds. I’d also, with the utmost sincerity, like to acknowledge the absolute, beyond-flawless little details that compose the masterpiece that is Succession. And when I push aside my personal aversion for method acting for the sake of appreciating Jeremy Strong’s self-destructive supremacy, what I really am getting at is the faithful and admittedly biased love I have...

Thanks to readily accessible information at our fingertips, we don't really have folk heroes anymore, but kayfabe is still alive thanks to the world of professional wrestling ... err, I mean, "sports entertainment." Of those figures, there is no one quite as polarizing as Vincent Kennedy McMahon. For nearly half a century, Vince McMahon has been the most powerful presence in the world of professional wrestling, turning WWE into one of the most financially successful companies in all of entertainment.
His influence and importance cannot be overstated, which is why it's so difficult to grapple with his legacy. McMahon changed the landscape of wrestling, but he is also an unequivocally problematic figure. And yet, it's impossible for any of us to know the true story behind McMahon because he's been using his power for years to shape his narrative. He's spun himself into a folk hero in the eyes of many,...

Alfred Sole, the prolific television production designer of Veronica Mars, Castle and MacGyver who had achieved cult-horror status with his 1976 film Alice, Sweet Alice featuring a 10-year-old Brooke Shields in a supporting role, died Feb. 14 at his home in Salt Lake City. He was 78.
His death was announced in a Facebook post by his cousin, filmmaker Dante Tomaselli. A cause of death was not specified.
Sole had already written and directed the 1972 sexually explicit, low-budget film Deep Sleep when several years later – and after the first film had been pulled from theaters on charges of obscenity – he turned to the horror genre. Originally titled Communion, Sole’s second movie premiered at the Chicago Film Festival in 1976 and was released by Allied Artists the following year as Alice, Sweet Alice, a name change disliked by Sole.

Exclusive: Monarch Media has optioned Leah Kunnath’s comedy script Foreign and Familiar, and are currently setting it up as a film, which Steve Barnett and Alan Powell will produce for the company.
Loosely based on Kunnath’s own teen years, Foreign and Familiar tells the story of a rebellious first-generation Indian-American teen who embarrasses her traditional Indian family, resulting in her parents sending her to high school in India to learn more about her culture.
Monarch’s Vicky Patel will executive produce the project with Adam Goldworm of Aperture Entertainment.
Kunnath’s first comedy feature script earned her a fellowship position with the Blacklist’s Minority Report initiative, and was also a semifinalist at the Austin Film Festival.

Jordan Blum, the creator and showrunner of Marvel’s animated series M.O.D.O.K. for Hulu, is one of the rare Marvel comic fans so dedicated that he was a little disappointed when the announced “Captain America: Serpent Society” film ended up being a joke-y cover-up title for Captain America: Civil War.
“I was probably the one person who was let down,” Blum tells Den of Geek. “I love the Civil War story, but I was like ‘Yes, finally, the Serpent Society! Number one Serpent Society fan over here.’”
Blum comes across his Marvel fandom honestly. The writer’s father learned English from reading Marvel comics to a young Jordan in his crib. There are pictures of Blum as a child in a high chair holding his first Captain America comic issues. Over the years, Blum has developed and maintained his passion for Marvel comics, and the character of M.O.D.

Originally slated for release April of 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic, director Brad Leo Lyon’s (Little Creeps/Monsters on Main Street) latest film Thursday the 12th – a horror comedy in the realm of Evil Dead meets Mallrats with a touch of Tucker and Dale Versus Evil – is finally getting ready for a new theatrical roadshow, touring the country doing advanced theatrical screenings of the film followed by a Q & A in cities across the US, starting in June.

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.
Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.
Thankfully, the real appeal in November 2020 is all the fresh library...

After his final experiment fails and blows up, Andy loses his chance to travel abroad and study at the prestigious Reinhardt Institute. With his future in doubt, and with no place to live, his future looks bleak. After last week’s offbeat slate of home media releases, things are back on track this Tuesday, with a wildly eclectic assortment of titles headed home just in time for the Halloween season. If somehow you haven’t been adding any of the Blumhouse movies to your home collections over the years, you can now play catch-up rather easily with their Blumhouse of Horrors: 10-Movie Collection. Vinegar Syndrome is once again doing the dark lord’s work with their releases of Pandemonium and The Caller, and Severin Films is showing some love to both Cruel Jaws and Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, too.
Scream Factory has put together a brand new collector’s edition Blu-ray for Ghost Ship that arrives this week, and if you’re someone who digs on “banana pants” cinematic experiences, you’ll definitely want to pick up Agfa’s Blu-ray for Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things.

Exclusive: Oscar-winning 1917 co-financier and producer New Republic Pictures has optioned New York Times best-selling author Grady Hendrix’s novel Horrorstör, which they will develop into a feature we have learned.
Hendrix’s debut novel, Horrorstör, was released by Quirk Books in 2013 and published in over a dozen languages across the world.
Formerly set up as a television series with Charlie Kaufman, Gail Berman and Josh Schwartz producing at Fox and then at AMC, Horrorstör is now going the feature route with Hendrix adapting his own material for the first time.
The book is set at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio where morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag” may be dead and gone, but they are most certainly not forgotten — at least as far as the American Cinema Editors are concerned. The organization announced the Eddie Award winners for TV on Friday night, at a ceremony held at the International Ballroom in the Beverly Hilton, hosted by star of “The Good Place” D’Arcy Carden.
Tim Porter’s work on the epic 82-minute “Game of Thrones” episode “The Long Night” earned him the prize for Best Edited Drama Series For Non-Commercial Television, unsurprising given Porter’s win for the work at the Emmy Awards in September.
The same goes for Gary Dollner for his work on the Season 2 premiere of “Fleabag.” The editor’s work is just the latest accolade garnered by Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s exquisite comedy. That makes two consecutive Eddie wins for Dollner, who won Best...

These are the 70th annual edition of the Ace Eddie Awards, which honor the best in feature film and television editing for the 2019 calendar year. Four Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing contend for the guild’s drama prize with the fifth recognized over on the comedy side (“Jojo Rabbit”). The influential Ace Eddie Awards nominees for editing include the prestige dramas “Ford v Ferrari, ” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story,” and “Parasite,” Left out was Sam Mendes’ late-breaking bold, single-cut “1917” from Oscar-winner Lee Smith (“Dunkirk”), which does not bode well for an Academy Award nomination. Best Picture contender “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” made the cut as a comedy nominee along with “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and “Knives Out.”
This makes for a competitive Oscar race, with three-time Academy Award-winner Thelma Schoonmaker as the frontrunner for “The Irishman,” Martin Scorsese’s deeply personal, character-driven, non-linear ode to mob life, complicated by Ilm’s experimental VFX de-aging of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino’s complex love letter to Tinseltown, should earn a nomination for Fred Raskin; Todd Phillips’ bending of reality and fantasy around...

Long before he chose that line of work however, he dabbled in the world of film directing. His first film, a 1972 hardcore sex “comedy” called Deep Sleep, which was financed on a bet, must be seen to be believed. He apparently made a follow-up film after that called American Soap which to my knowledge has never seen the light of day. I would be very interested in seeing the latter as despite a few flourishes of cinematic style and several humorous sequences involving dialogue, the former is just a hardcore sex romp featuring folks no one in their right mind would want to see naked, let alone copulating. Amazon Studios has picked up to series Ya drama pilot Panic, from writer Lauren Oliver based on her best-selling book and producers Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum.
Ramping up a Ya slate was one of the first major programming initiatives of Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke after she joined the company last year. The company greenlighted three Ya drama pilots, Panic, College and The Wilds. Of the other two, College is not going forward, while The Wilds remains in contention.
Written and created by Oliver based on her novel published by HarperCollins, Panic centers on a small town in America where every year the graduating seniors engage in a competition they believe is their one chance to escape. But this year, the rules have changed — and they must decide how much they are willing to risk in order to get out.

I have always considered myself a big fan of Sean Penn’s. Just ask my fiancé, and she will tell you. Penn is a talented fella both on screen and behind the camera. I have always been intrigued at how he could be so good on film, but off-screen, he seems to be so mad at the world. This was a guy that once married to both Madonna and Robin Wright Penn and still walked around like the world was on his shoulders. I just couldn’t understand how someone could be so mad at the world. But I guess that’s one of the things that fuels him and the characters he portrays on film.
I might be a fan, but Sean Penn lost all my respect a few years back after I watched the documentary, The Day I Met El Chapo. The doc tells the story of Kate Del Castillo...

This story contains spoilers for the third-season finale of The Good Place, "Pandemonium."
To presume to know how The Good Place will finish its run based on the events in the season three finale would be begging to be proven wrong.
The series changes its status quo every half-season or so — sometimes more frequently than that — so viewers are due for at least one more big shakeup in the fourth season. But the way "Pandemonium" played out — far less hectically than the title implies — at least suggests where the show will head when it ...

The Good Place, you know that acclaimed series that keeps getting nominated for awards, making "best of" lists and is just pretty forking great, has reached the end of its third season. That means one thing: a twist is (probably) coming. NBC's afterlife comedy starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson ended its previous two seasons with major reveals. In the first season, viewers—and the dead folks—learned they weren't really in the Good Place (heaven), but rather an experimental version of the Bad Place (hell). Then, the second season ended with the dead folks being sent back to Earth, very much alive. Told you there were twists! Now, the third season ends with "Pandemonium," and this is...

Genre: Experimental Short
The dream – or nightmare – has been a staple of horror cinema for decades. In 1929, Luis Bunuel joined forces with Salvador Dali to create Un chien andalou, an experimental and unforgettable 17-minute surrealist masterpiece. Buñuel famously said that he and Dalí wrote the film by telling one another their dreams. The film went on to influence the horror genre immensely. After all, even as manipulative as the “dream” device is, it’s still a proven way to jolt an audience. Just ask Wes Craven, who understood this bit of cinematic psychology when he dreamt of the central force behind A Nightmare on Elm Street, a film intended to be an exploration of surreal horror. David Lynch is contemporary cinema’s most devoted student of Un chien andalou – the severed ear at...

Stars: Linda Miller, Mildred Clinton, Paula Sheppard, Niles McMaster, Jane Lowry, Rudolph Willrich, Michael Hardstark, Alphonso DeNoble, Gary Allen, Brooke Shields | Written by Alfred Sole, Rosemary Ritvo | Directed by Alfred Sole
88 Films expand their DVD repertoire with their first non-Full Moon flick Alice Sweet Alice (aka Communion), the 1970s “killer kid” proto-slasher from director Alfred Sole – who would later go on to spoof the genre a mere three years later with Pandemonium.
When ten-year-old Karen (Brooke Shields, in her first screen appearance) is killed in church on the occasion of her first communion, her seemingly innocent older sister Alice (Paula Sheppard) becomes the prime suspect. Matters become complicated as more of Alice s family members are attacked, along with residents of her apartment building. Can a twelve-year-old girl be capable of such mayhem, or is someone else with a vicious plan destroying her family?

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.
****
Special Mention:
Häxan
Directed by Benjamin Christensen
Denmark / Sweden, 1922
Häxan (a.k.a The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 silent documentary about the history of witchcraft,...

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Throughout the month of October, Editor-in-Chief and resident Horror expert Ricky D, will be posting a list of his favorite Horror films of all time. The list will be posted in six parts. Click here to see every entry.
As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. It was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried and eventually gave up.
