A moderately entertaining first episode--but the ending is really dumb.
This is the pilot for the TV series "The Streets of San Francisco". The program is a moderately entertaining look at the series--decent but not so outstanding that you would be hooked on the show. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as so often pilots are little like the later series--so perhaps the show will get a lot better.
The show begins with the body of a young woman being discovered in the water near the Golden Gate Bridge. However, this lady didn't jump--someone dumped her in the river further towards the city. And, she was already dead before she hit the water. The body, oddly, has a necklace on it--a necklace with a laminated business card for a lawyer (Robert Wagner). When the lawyer is called in to identify the body, he admits to knowing her and gives the police officers (Michael Douglas and Karl Malden) the name of the girl. However, he's evasive and obviously knows more about the case--and the police know this when they catch him in some of his lies. However, it's early on in the show and you know there is MUCH more to it than this. Plus, he IS a lawyer and lying isn't exactly unusual for the profession!
The good of the series is Karl Malden. He was a fine actor and here he seems quite at home as a detective. Plus, the rapport between him and Douglas was pretty good for a first episode. But, the show definitely suffers later in the episode when a LOT of weird mumbo-jumbo occurs--and the show definitely goes off the deep end! In fact, the show looks a bit more like "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" than "The Streets of San Francisco"!! It's totally out of place and a bit dumb. Too bad--maybe they'll get better.
By the way, I did think it was a bit interesting that Andrew Duggan appeared in this pilot, as he also was in the pilot for another cop show, "Hawaii Five-O".
