A minor work from a major filmmaker, Presence is Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh’s first official foray into supernatural horror. Shot primarily in a single, standalone set over less than two weeks and a limited shooting schedule, Presence doesn’t reinvent or reimagine tropes associated with haunted house or supernatural ghost stories. Far from it. What Presence does do — in Soderbergh’s approach to formal experimentation within predetermined boundaries — it does far better and far more effectively than the vast majority of filmmakers currently writing and directing within the horror space could achieve within the same preset parameters. Working from a seemingly simple, straightforward script written by David Koepp, Soderbergh removes any...

The 1950s are considered the “Golden Age” of science fiction cinema, and that’s not just hyperbole. By many accounts, more than 200 sci-fi movies were released during that decade. And while the film industry had sporadically produced quality sci-fi in the years before—ranging from Aelita (1924) to Metropolis (1927), to The Invisible Man (1933)—it wasn’t until the 1950s that classic after classic began to arrive like riches from a long-lost hidden treasure.
And when we say classic, we mean films that essentially created the template for all science fiction movies that followed. Just look at this list. The first half of the decade brought us The Thing from Another World, When Worlds Collide, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, and Them!, while the second half ushered in This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Blob, The Fly,...

The reason so many tragicomic stories are told in song and onscreen about authority structures severely overreacting to silly situations is that it happens — All. The. Time.

In 1938, Orson Welles terrified CBS Radio listeners with his adaptation of "The War of the Worlds." Despite clarifying before and during the broadcast that the radio drama was a work of pure fiction, Welles' play-by-play recount of a fictitious alien invasion famously caused a brief bout of mass hysteria. Many listeners had somehow believed that the invasion was real, even though the exact numbers of those who were swept up in it are unclear. Despite this, this radio drama is probably among the most infamous examples of the public believing that a work of pure fiction was real, even with the proper warnings indicating that it wasn't.
So, what exactly does Welles' doomed adaptation of "The War of the Worlds" and the recently-released "Something in the Dirt" have in common? According to directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead ("Synchronic," "Spring," "Moon Knight"), it's that ever-present idea that someone might not...

It’s one of the year’s most awaited discs: the recent restored and remastered The War of the Worlds ’53 in a glorious 4K Ultra HD edition. A second Blu-ray disc of When Worlds Collide ’51 is too good to be called a bonus extra: this edition looks better than anything seen since original Technicolor prints. In one show we endure scurvy invaders from The Red Planet; in the other a rogue Astral Body threatens Earth with obliteration, necessitating escape on a space ship. Don’t bother checking online for tickets, the flight is sold out. CineSavant has the lowdown for collectors: how good does the new release look?

In case you haven’t heard, Jordan Peele has a new movie out this weekend, which is exciting. And while we can be reasonably sure that a huge chunk of the plot and premise of Nope won’t be revealed until you are sitting in your cinema seat, we already know it has a sinister cloud and, at some point, a flying saucer. So it’s not too much of leap to guess that aliens are going to be invading Earth again. When it comes to movies though, that’s kind of their thing…
If you are the pernickety, ruin-everyone-else’s-fun kind of science fiction fan, most alien invasion storylines present a bit of a problem: If you can build spaceships capable of carrying a military force large enough to subdue a planet, and transporting that force the vast interstellar distances between habitable worlds, well, you probably don’t really need to invade anywhere.

Nothing short of astonishment swept across Hollywood over the June 3-5 weekend when Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick dropped a mere 29 percent from its Memorial Day launch thanks to spectacular word of mouth.
That’s the lowest decline in history for a movie opening to 100 million or more, and a slim decline for any movie, according to Comscore. A decline of 55 percent would have been considered excellent, or even 50 percent. The bigger a Hollywood tentpole opens, the more inclined it is to drop 60 percent or more.

Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick is showing no signs of slowing down.
The Paramount and Skydance tentpole, starring Tom Cruise, is doing massive business in its second weekend. The sequel earned 90 million to boast the smallest decline ever — 29 percent — for a movie opening domestically to 100 million or more. Shrek 2, which launched to 108 million, fell 33 percent, according to Comscore.

H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" has been a source of terror ever since its debut in 1897. Orson Welles and The Mercury Theater On the Air's infamous 1938 radio adaptation caused near nation-wide panic when first broadcast, and director Byron Haskin's 1953 film version creeped out hundreds of Eisenhower-era kids with its special effects.
When director Steven Spielberg updated Wells' tale for a post-9/11 America in 2005, the scene where an alien tripod emerges from the ground and lets loose an ear-splitting klaxon before vaporizing entire swathes of unsuspecting humans with its death rays was just the tip of the scary iceberg...

Bill Maher on Friday returned to the subject of “ridiculous” censorship on Twitter and other social media platforms, calling for users to “develop a better bulls— detector” to protect themselves from lies and misinformation.
“This idea that we can clean up Twitter and protect you from fake news and disinformation, it’s so ridiculous,” the comic said during the “New Rules” segment of his HBO series “Real Time.” “It’s like fact-checking the graffiti on the bathroom wall of a dive bar. We called this number and we didn’t have a good time.”
The host began with a Mother’s Day salute, and then argued that social media companies shouldn’t have to pose as our parents online. “Let’s pause and take a moment to think about how your mother was always there for you, looking after you and keeping you safe — and then realize, That’s not Twitter’s job!

George Pal’s ill-fated ‘future docu’ followup to Destination Moon still stirs the imagination, rendering in vivid Technicolor the visionary images that amazed us in Chesley Bonestell’s paintings about space travel. We still love the movie even if we want to shove the script and whoever approved it out an airlock without a space helmet. It’s fun to pick it apart, but when Van Cleave’s trilling ‘spacey’ music plays we know we’re back in 1950s Sci-fi Nirvana, anticipating a techno-future of space marvels. [Imprint] gives the movie a classy Blu-ray showcase.

In 2008, when Tandem’s Rola Bauer and Tim Halkin began financing “The Pillars of the Earth,” allying with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, they stood nearly alone in Europe in making grand-scale English-language limited series.
Now Bauer and Halkin are in the vanguard of a global TV revolution at the Munich-based company.
The Canadian Bauer and U.S.-born Halkin met when he reported to her at ProSieben in Germany. In 1999, the pair founded Tandem. In early 2012, Studiocanal, owned by Vivendi’s Canal Plus Group, bought a 51% share in Tandem. That deal helped the boutique company, which makes international programming usually with U.S. partners, move ahead.

French pay-tv powerhouse Canal Plus and Fox’s Europe and Africa arm are joining forces on a series adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic novel “The War of the Worlds.” The show will follow the classic alien-invasion story but set the action in the present day. The eight-part drama will start shooting this fall, with Studiocanal and Urban Myth Films on production duty.
The new adaptation was created and written by Howard Overman (“Merlin”). “In many ways, H.G. Wells’ novel is a cautionary tale of racial superiority and ethnic conflict,” he said. “It is these themes that I wanted to explore more fully in my modern re-imagining. I look forward to bringing our bold, fresh and relatable version, inspired by this much-loved story, to a new audience.’’
Canal Plus will run the show in France and French-speaking territories and Fox Networks Group across its extensive footprint in Europe and Africa.

Netflix’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Fox’s The Four helped British commercial broadcaster ITV bolster its revenues for the first three months of the year.
The company revealed that overall revenue across the firm was up 5% to £772M (Us$1B), compared to £734M ($995M) last year. Revenue at production group ITV Studios, which produced the above series, grew 11% to £382M ($518M) to the end of March 2018, with organic revenues up 9%. The BBC has started production on their epic big-budget TV adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic 1898 novel War of the Worlds and today we have our first look. The photo features stars Eleanor Tomlinson and Rafe Spall, who play George and Amy in the series. They will be joined by Rupert Graves (Sherlock) as George’s older brother Frederick, and Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) as an astronomer and scientist named Ogilvy.
