According to Hollywood.com's "Box-Office", with 22 days left in the calendar year, year-to-date box-office will hit $9,681,800,000 today and thus pass the record year of 2007 and its full-year total of $9.680 billion. Through this past Sunday, year-to-date revenue stood at $9,658,700,000, just $21.3 million short of surpassing year 2007’s record revenue. With Monday generating $7.5 million, Tuesday generating $8.1 million and a projected conservative estimate of $7.5 million for Wednesday, Hollywood.com "Box-Office" places the year-to-date revenue (through today) at $9,681,800,000. So why is most of Hollywood out of work?
With numerous huge films still on the way, we [...]

New Variety Editor Is Ex-la Timesman Who Knows Nothing About Entertainment Biz
8 December 2009 3:36 PM, PST
Why in the world ex-Los Angeles Times' errand boy Leo Wolinsky has been named editor of Daily Variety (both the La and NY editions) is bewildering to say the least. The guy knows nothing about the entertainment biz. He was long considered a joke at the La Times and infamous for secretly helping wrangle billionaire potential local backers like Eli Broad, Ron Burkle, Richard Riordan and David Geffen when then bigwig editors were fighting with Tribune Co. (Finke/La Weekly: Baquet's Billionaire Boys Club). He briefly sat atop the La Times' entertainment and feature sections as a seat-filler until he was let go. Nevertheless, Wolinsky will [...]

Update: Rave To Acquire 35 Of Redstone's National Amusements Theater Complexes
7 December 2009 5:55 PM, PST
Breaking News! Exclusive!
6:30 Pm Update: Now I've learned Rave Motion Pictures is buying 35 theatre complexes from National Amusement, and that the two companies have signed a definitive agreement. My sources think the deal should close in the next 2 weeks. Financing is being provided by Tower Brook Capital Partners, the hedge fund. There still is no official confirmation on this.
5:55 Pm: If the advanced talks result in a deal, it would make Rave Motion Pictures the 5th largest exhibitor. The Dallas-based privately held theater circuit has 30 locations and 475 screens located in 14 states, and is now the biggest U.S. exhibition chain to have 100% [...]

UTA Signs Ice Cube & His Production Co
7 December 2009 5:22 PM, PST
Back in June I posted about the feeding frenzy among Hollywood agencies to sign Ice Cube because he makes something like $10M a year. Now Ice Cube has discharged Wme over the weekend and signed with UTA. He will be repped by a team led by his former agents Ramses IsHak and Michael Sheresky, who themselves joined UTA earlier this year, as well as UTA board members Tracey Jacobs and Jeremy Zimmer. Also signing with UTA is the actor-director-writer-producer’s production company Cube Vision, which is run by Cube’s producing partner, Matt Alvarez. This is a busy time for Cube and Alvarez who are in post production [...]

The Other Shoe Drops: David Maisel Resigning When Marvel/Disney Deal Closes
7 December 2009 2:38 PM, PST
Updates Marvel Sets Dec. 31st For Disney Merger Vote By Stockholders
This was expected because why does Marvel Studios need a chairman after December 31st? Since Kevin Feige, the president, will be running things at Marvel Studios under Walt Disney Studios new boss Rich Ross' direction. Hollywood can say what it will about Maisel (and believe me, people do, since he was not Mr Popularity), but the facts are he launched Marvel Studios by creating the $525M non-recourse finance facility so that Marvel could self-finance its hot propeties. He launched the successful Iron Man franchise, and less successfully the Hulk reboot. And he [...]

4th Update: Hollywood PR Shakeup!
7 December 2009 10:05 AM, PST
Breaking News! Exclusive!
4th Update -- Monday 10:50 Am: What is being described to me as the biggest U.S. entertainment and lifestyle public relations and marketing company will be created on January 1st. This morning, Pmk/Hbh announced to its staff that it was merging with Bnc. Both powerful brands are owned by advertising and marketing giant InterPublic, which gave its blessing to the union when the pair began negotiations about two months ago. "We went to them and said, 'This is what we want to do,' and they loved it," an insider tells me. I've learned that the combined PR firms will [...]
