Sexy, brooding teenagers absolutely ruled the domestic box office Friday, with Summit Entertainment’s “Twilight Saga: New Moon” opening to a record single-day total of $72.7 million at 4,024 theaters, according to studio estimates.

The opening – which put the film on pace for a three-day weekend of more than $120 million -- surpassed the previous single-day mark of $62.2 million, also set on a Friday by Warner's "The Dark Knight" in July 2008.
