A particular scene in Ari Aster's "Hereditary," which unfolds around the 33-minute mark, is designed to shock, terrify, and subvert expectations. You know exactly which scene I'm talking about: when Peter (Alex Wolff) drives a sick Charlie (Milly Shapiro) to the hospital after the latter experiences a peanut allergy and sticks her head out of the moving car to breathe better. Before you know it, a deer blocks the road, and Peter swerves, causing Charlie's head to hit a telephone pole, which leads to instant decapitation. The utter shock of witnessing such a gruesome death looms over everything that happens next, tinting "Hereditary" as visceral horror where the bonds of family get twisted into something unrecognizably frightening.
While Charlie's death is the first tragedy that completely breaks the Grahams, the power of hindsight makes it clear that the seeds of evil were sown way before her death, and that...

"Who is Matilda Wormwood if not Carrie White without religious trauma?" This is a joke I made when interviewing "Abigail" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for the /Film Daily podcast after complimenting them on their decision to cast Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" star Alisha Weir as their titular ballerina vampire. "Matilda" is one of author Roald Dahl's most beloved characters, offering children both the fantastical wish-fulfillment of having telekinetic superpowers, as well as the ever-important message that reading is cool. The 1988 novel has been adapted multiple times across various media, most notably the 1996 feature film directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson, the two-part BBC Radio 4 special, the stage musical featuring music by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, and the Netflix film adaptation of said musical.

Civil War is an extremely powerful, effective movie that thrusts you into the middle of an American civil war seen through the eyes of a war photographer. It’s brutal. It’s extraordinarily violent. The sound design is bordering on abusive. And if you watch it in IMAX you can reasonably expect to leave the theater with more than a little motion sickness. It is, however, excellent, with great performances from Kirsten Dunst as the older, jaded photographer and Cailee Spaeny as the reckless youngster new to the game. So see it. But we’d be very surprised if you decide to rush back for a second viewing.
Here’s our celebration of the wonderful, must-see movies where once is quite enough, thank you very much.

Almost eleven months have gone by since we heard that Julie Bowen – who played the character Claire Dunphy on 250 episodes of the ABC sitcom Modern Family – had signed on to star in the coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series Hysteria!, which is set up at the Peacock streaming service. Emjay Anthony (Physical), Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer), Kezii Curtis (Charm City Kings), Nikki Hahn (Magnum P.I.), and Anna Camp of the Pitch Perfect films joined the show soon after Bowen. They are Garret Dillahunt (The Last House on the Left remake), Nolan North (Pretty Little Liars), Elijah Richardson (Fantasy Football), Milly Shapiro (Hereditary), Allison Scagliotti (Warehouse 13), and Jessica Treska (Alex & Me). Ari Aster's 2018 film "Hereditary" contains a great deal of shadow-lurking, a scene of spontaneous human combustion, several decapitations, allusions to demonic powers, and at least one Satanic cult. However, if one were to ask a "Hereditary" fan about the film, they would mention Toni Collette's amazing performance before any of the above elements. They will also likely recall the scenes of sheer panic, the harrowing sense of guilt, and the unnerving presence of actor Milly Shapiro as the scary young Charlie. This is, of course, the way Aster wanted it. "Hereditary" may have supernatural elements, but it is, first and foremost, a story about the breakdown of the family unit. It's about intergenerational trauma and how our most grievous pains are handed directly to us by our mothers. It's a nightmare, but more in the Freudian sense.

It’s that time year again—when one might, upon their daily neighborhood perambulation, casually stumble upon a man dressed in a blood-splattered full-body jumpsuit and think to themself, this is perfectly fine and normal. But that’s the Halloween season for you, when the ghosts and goblins and AMC-obsessed Nicole Kidmans are out in full force for their yearly Halloween rituals.
Aside from meticulously inserting razor blades into the apples we all intend to hand out to local children, everyone’s favorite part of the Halloween season is—of course—the excuse to binge-watch our favorite horror movies, from the silly-scary (Hocus Pocus), to the fun-scary (Trick R Treat), to the scary-scary (The Evil Dead) or the really scary-scary (any news channel). After spending two weeks talking about dinosaurs with Tammy and the T-Rex and then Jurassic Park last week, it seemed like a good time to revisit a very serious, very somber contemporary classic: Ari Aster‘s 2018 family melodrama, Heredtiary, just in time for its 5th anniversary.
In the film, grieving diorama creator Annie (Toni Collette) has recently lost her mother, with whom she had a very contentious relationship. Almost immediately the family is hit with another loss when daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) is killed in a freak accident.
As Annie’s husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne) tries to keep the family together, Annie is befriended by Joan (Ann Dowd), a member of her grief counseling group, while her son Peter (Alex Wolff) begins to come under psychic attack. What’s really going on with all of these unusual events? The truth lies in the treehouse; just mind your head!

It’s been a four-year long wait, but Ari Aster has finally made his return. The director’s third film “Beau is Afraid” journeyed into theaters April 14, bringing surrealist comedy to audiences through the auteur’s famously punishing perspective. The film, which is as loved as it is disliked by critics and audiences, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the title character: a repressed man making a grueling odyssey back home to see his mother.
The film’s title and premise comes from Aster’s 2011 short film “Beau.” One of several shorts he made as a student at the American Film Institute Conservatory — the most infamous being the viral incest drama, “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons” — the original “Beau” was a much smaller production than the director’s latest, focusing on the title character (played by the late Billy Mayo) as he’s locked in his apartment following the disappearance of his keys.

Director Ari Aster's 2018 debut feature -- the psychological horror "Hereditary" -- is a raw and ruthless portrayal of grief. Seasoned actress Toni Collette was brought on to play Annie, the matriarch of the Graham family, as she spirals into a disturbing emotional state of despair following the death of her daughter, Charlie (Milly Shapiro).
Collette is no stranger to portraying stressed-out and emotional characters. She's portrayed multiple personalities as a suburban mom struggling with Dissociative Identity Disorder in "United States of Tara", worked as a single mom whose child could see ghosts in "The Sixth Sense", and fought to keep her family together while being attacked by evil Christmas toys and elves in "Krampus." To put it bluntly, Collette has been through multiple circles of Hell -- cinematically speaking. And yet, her role in "Hereditary" as a grieving miniaturist was her most challenging yet.

"Don't Look Now" and "Hereditary" are films that stay with you long after viewing. Both feature vivid depictions of the ongoing effects of grief, but director Ari Aster makes a hard turn partway through his 2018 feature debut, veering into supernatural territory as the Graham family discover they've been targeted by the demon Paimon and his cult of followers. In "Don't Look Now," on the other hand, the occult elements, though undoubtedly there, are less overt. Director Nicolas Roeg told The Guardian in 2006:
"Grief can separate people. I've seen it happen. Even the closest, healthiest relationship can come undone through grief. People split up. Or there is a distancing. They can't help it. The fact is that grief doesn't comfort grief. It's just one of those hard facts."
As such, the director allows grief to dictate the horror throughout "Don't Look Now,...

"Hereditary" opens on a shot of a treehouse seen through a window before an ominously slow pan around the room reveals a dollhouse sitting on a table. The camera dollies in to focus on a bedroom, which as it comes closer is shown to be an actual room, tracked onto the dollhouse with VFX. This opening sequence is at once unsettling and intriguing. What does the dollhouse have to do with anything? Well, according to director Ari Aster, it's an important metaphor for the film as a whole.

It’s been more than three years since Ari Aster unleashed the skull-cracking terror of “Midsommar” unto unsuspecting audiences. The writer/director’s sophomore outing from 2019 — a cult film starring Florence Pugh that’s best remembered for its fiery finale and lush production design — echoed and exploded the finesse of his first: a nasty and spare possession flick starring a career-best Toni Collette and the dauntless Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro.
Aster’s breakout feature debut “Hereditary” turned the writer/director into one of the hottest indie filmmakers of 2018. Formerly known for his stomach-churning short “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons,” the AFI graduate became the face of A24’s burgeoning art house of horrors just as his work came to shape the so-called “elevated horror” moment of the late 2010s. It’s a fitting arc for a filmmaker who has described a lifelong love affair with the horror genre.

Everyone remembers the old Stouffer's commercials. A nice American family sits down for some kind of baked casserole or microwaved TV dinner while a soft guitar thrums in the background, urging them to reprioritize family time. In truth, it's not an especially bad sentiment. Interpersonally speaking, the dinner table is as good an opportunity as ever to connect to the people one loves most, sharing notes on respective days — the good, the bad, and everything in between.
As an opportunity to unwind and connect, it's priceless, though if horror movies have taught audiences anything, it's that the dinner table can be one of the scariest places to be. It's par for the course, with scary movies frequently exploiting quotidian fears to terrifying, remarkable success. Grief is a common thread in many horror films. It often plays a minor role in the film, or as you'll see from our list, grief lies at the heart of a film's emotional core. It drives the story forward and grounds the character(s) in realism when spooky things start to happen. In dealing with the supernatural, the occult, a masked killer, or any manner of other genre foes, the protagonists learn how to finally process their grief and slay their demons. The external forces are sometimes the least of their worries.
For the sake of our list, we take a look at grief as a direct response to death. Grief, as we know, can result from any sort of loss, from the death of a pet to a lost friendship. Below, we picked through decades of films to compile the 14 best titles depicting grief, each possessing a mood and approach all their own.

With his 2018 film "Hereditary," Ari Aster crafted a deeply unsettling movie about a child's death, the dissolution of a family, and the earthly rise of a demon named Paimon. The movie's careful threading of supernatural horror with everyday horror is just one reason why it quickly became one of the best horror movies of all time. "Hereditary" skeptics might quibble with that ranking, but there's no denying the powerful, haunting tone the movie summons, especially in its final moments.
Those final moments largely concern King Paimon. Paimon, a demon from Hell who has long waited for the chance to arrive on Earth, spends most of "Hereditary" in the shadows. Writer-director Ari Aster largely relegates Paimon to the movie's final act, all the while developing a complex and mysterious web of traumatic backstory that only clicks into place once you know the movie's supernatural scope. And because of the demon's obscurity,...

Ari Aster's "Hereditary" is a film about trauma, grief, and worshipping ancient demons. To those who've watched it, it is easily one of the most terrifying horror movies of all time. The film follows a family that is haunted by a supernatural presence after the death of their mysterious grandmother, who was the leader of a cult. It stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Gabriel Byrne, and Milly Shapiro in the leading roles. It is a nerve-wracking experience to sit back and watch its events unfold — because Ari Aster knows how to shake his audience to their core.
While "Hereditary" relies less on jumpscares and instead focuses on inducing terror that is more psychological, the film has its fair share of horrifying scenes. And its darkest, most unsettling sequence is the filmmaker's favorite.

On the surface, Ari Aster's follow-up to his absolutely chilling debut "Hereditary" seems like it exists in stark contrast to the haunted family portrait of that first film. "Midsommar" takes its characters through a psychotropic journey in a strange place in a strange land that leads to a bizarre ritual sacrifice. "Hereditary" traps a family together in a claustrophobic tragedy that ends with them essentially tearing each other apart. "Midsommar" is also brightly sunlit, taking place entirely during the day while "Hereditary" seems shrouded in darkness with scenes taking place mostly at night. Ari Aster, himself, didn't necessarily see any connective tissue between the two films either, usually referring to "Hereditary" as "a horror film, unabashedly," and carefully calling "Midsommar" an "adult contemporary fairy tale."
That description of "Midsommar" from an interview with Fandango was most likely Aster trying to craft a soundbite to describe a very complex story.

We’ve ranked final girls and villainesses. We’ve remembered Fay Wray and honored Jamie Lee Curtis. We’ve ruminated on director Mary Lambert’s “Pet Sematary,” celebrated star Jess Weixler kicking the hell out of “Teeth,” and considered the limitations imposed by so-called sanity in “Carrie,” “Unsane,” and more psychological fright fests.
We’ve waxed poetic about our favorite horror movies and pestered genre goddesses of all kinds to do same with Kristen Connolly (“The Cabin in the Woods”), Leigh Janiak (“Fear Street”), Thora Birch (“Hocus Pocus”), Barbara Crampton (“Re-Animator”), Milly Shapiro (“Hereditary”), Essie Davis (“The Babadook”), and more weighing in. Heck, Cassandra Peterson — yes, the Elvira — even sat us down for a whole conversation picking apart what sets her Halloween-loving heart aflutter, in an interview that also explores the LGBTQ underpinnings of countless scary movies.

Ari Aster's psychological horror film "Hereditary" is teeming with scenes that will frighten the wits out of any horror enthusiast. The film follows a family haunted by an otherworldly presence after the death of their mysterious grandmother, the leader of a cult. It stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Gabriel Byrne, and Milly Shapiro in the leading roles. If you've watched it, you know "Hereditary" is a profoundly unsettling film with plenty of terrorizing moments. It's undeniable — "Hereditary" is one of the most unsettling films of the last decade. A highly strung family melodrama that hides elements of the supernatural, "Hereditary" goes to great lengths when keeping its hideous secrets just out of sight. And that's only the beginning.
"Hereditary" tells the story of the Graham family, whose matriarch, Ellen Taper Leigh (Kathleen Chalfant), has passed away. Immediately beginning with Ellen's funeral, the entire film takes an off-kilter turn as the family begins to unravel. An unresolved tension runs deep through the Graham family. Young Charlie (Milly Shapiro) was her grandmother's favorite and is now clearly struggling after her...

Ari Aster's "Hereditary," a movie about grief, trauma, and the worshipping of ancient demon spirits, can be a hard film to watch. Whether you're recoiling at Annie Graham's (Toni Collette) magnificent breakdown at her family dinner table or the unfortunate meeting between her daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) and a telephone pole, there is really quite a lot going on in this film to make you think maybe you should have just stuck with the latest episode of "Love is Blind" instead. This is a movie that does not let up with its relentless onslaught of pain and anguish, and it's a wonder that the actors...

Alex Wolff’s latest film, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old,” marks the 23-year-old actor’s return to the genre that solidified him as one to watch: horror. However, Wolff recently revealed the same film that garnered him such acclaim in the first place, “Hereditary,” left an indelible mark long after the cameras stopped rolling.
Wolff was promoting “Pig,” the Nicolas Cage-starring drama in an interview with Collider when he brought up the lasting effects of his role in Ari Aster’s horrifying feature debut, “Hereditary.”
“I’ll tell you that movie did about as much damage to me as a movie can do,” Wolff told the outlet, admitting the damage included psychological effects and loss of sleep. He suffered “all of it,” he said, adding, “It really affected me.”

“False Positive,” which hit Hulu on Friday, sees Ilana Glazer terrorized by a sinister pregnancy and an even more sinister fertility doctor (Pierce Brosnan). The “Rosemary’s Baby” vibes have us reminiscing on not just that classic film but on all of the villainous children of horror history.

While young Charlie is ultimately a victim in Ari Aster’s instant-classic debut feature, “Hereditary,” she sure does make an eerie impression. Actress Milly Shapiro, in her first film role, imbues the troubled teen trope with a sense of otherworldly dread, rendering the character’s thousand-yard stares and periodic tongue-clicking genuinely creepy instead of comical. Although she is absent for the film’s off-the-walls final act, Charlie’s untimely demise remains one of the most shocking movie moments of recent memory.

It was while I was researching The Book of Horror, an illustrated guide to the scariest movies ever made, that I first started seeing things.
Not the full Haley Joel Osment, you understand, but what we’ll call a seventh sense. I’d catch glimpses of something out of the corner of my eye, and my mind would fill in the blanks with spooky imagery because I was consuming so much of it.
It didn’t help that my son had just been born. Lack of sleep combined with horror movie overload is a condition I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Night becomes dawn becomes day – the full George A Romero – and reality becomes harder and harder to rely upon.
Driving past the local garage one evening, I saw a Creepshow skeleton caked with remnants of clinging skin staring out at me from the front seat of a car. Watching The Great British Bake Off,...

Today we rewind to the opening night of Matilda on Broadway in 2012. The musical, which came straight from its Olivier Award-winning run in London, starred Bertie Carvel, Gabriel Ebert, Lesli Margherita, and Lauren Ward with Oona Laurence, Sophia Gennusa, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro in the title role. Matilda would go on the run for 1554 performances at the Shubert Theatre.

Zombies, aliens, creepy cults, and the return of The Shape—when I look back at 2018, it’s hard to believe that everything I watched, read, and experienced happened within a 12-month span instead of a 12-year span. In a decade that has been a golden age for horror, 2018 was the best year yet, and I have no doubt that years from now, people will look back at this past calendar year as one of the most fruitful and influential for the horror genre. But that will be decades down the line, and while we’re all still here, comfortably snuggled between horror’s successes of 2018 and the alluring potential of everything to come in 2019, I’d like to take a few moments out of your day to reflect on some of my fondest experiences from what has been a historical high for the genre we all know and love.

Decapitation, broken bones and supernatural monsters were popular additions to many of this year’s scariest film and television moments. And with multiple scenes reportedly causing audience walk-outs, this year’s horror entries didn’t shy away from the gratuitous gore and disturbing deaths that have made the genre what it is today.
See if scenes from your favorite horror show made the list below.
“Suspiria” – Olga’s Death
Even if you haven’t seen Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of “Suspiria,” you’ve most likely heard about it’s opening dance-studio death. The terrifying scene, which features the gruesome murder of one of the film’s principal dancers, caused some viewers to walk out of the theater, and with such a visceral death, it’s easy to see why. As Dakota Johnson’s character performs a violent dance number in the film’s central dance studio, her actions magically ravage...

This film “is born of very personal feelings,” reveals writer/director Ari Aster in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above) about first feature, the indie horror hit “Hereditary.” “Ultimately, the horror genre is a great filter to pass [through] personal things and out comes something else,” he explains. “For me it was a way of finding the catharsis in an otherwise very bleak story.”
“Hereditary” stars Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Toni Collette, Emmy winner Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and newcomer Milly Shapiro as a family haunted after the death of their secretive grandmother. It has been acclaimed as one of the best films of the year, with particular acclaim for the cast and Aster as a first-time helmer, who created a deeply disturbing and confronting horror film. ‘Halloween’ to ‘Hereditary’: Successful Female-Driven Horror Isn’t Just About the Final Girl Anymore
David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” broke several records this past weekend — including biggest “Halloween” franchise opening, biggest horror movie opening with a female lead, and second biggest horror opening ever, to name just a few. But the most exciting one is that the Jamie Lee Curtis-starring franchise entry can also celebrate being the biggest opening for a film starring a woman over 55 ever, regardless of genre.
Curtis, who reprised her iconic role as Laurie Strode in the franchise reboot, celebrated the news on her social media accounts, complete with the hashtag #womengettingthingsdone. And she’s not the only trailblazer in the horror genre.
This year alone, horror films centered on female stars that don’t fall into traditional tropes —like the plucky teenager or the nutty older lady — have proven their worth at the box office, from “Halloween” to “Hereditary.” Other classic horror films have hinged on their female leads,...

[Note: With Hereditary out on Blu-ray this week, here's a reposting of one of our reviews from the films UK cinematic debut]
Some critics might turn their nose up at the idea that 30-year-old Ari Aster’s debut film should be mentioned in the same breath as the greats of horror. But Aster is clearly a genre fan. With Hereditary, he’s borrowing the possession aspects of The Exorcist; the elemental grief of Don’t Look Now; the parental anxiety of Rosemary’s Baby; the maternal madness of Images; the familial holocaust of The Shining; and the generational violence of Psycho. The result is a distressing and exhausting piece of work, as subversive (in its own way) as last year’s horror breakout, Jordan’s Peele’s Get Out; although it’s probably closer in tone and pacing to Robert Eggers’ The Witch.

Milly Shapiro certainly picked a great movie for her first big screen role. Exclusive: Ari Aster’s debut feature Hereditary premiered in the Midnight section of Sundance back in January to unanimously positive response and has now become the biggest worldwide grossing movie ever for A24. With $77.5 million at the global box office, the low-budget horror is the third in-house production for A24, with Palmstar and Lars Knudsen on as producers, that the company has seen through a worldwide release following Barry Jenkins’ Best Picture Oscar winner Moonlight and Greta Gerwig’s Oscar nominated Lady Bird.
But the model on this one was slightly different.

After an impressive theatrical run – which saw the Ari Aster-directed feature gross nearly $75 million on a production budget of just $10 million – Hereditary, arguably the scariest family drama to ever unfold on the big screen, has finally been given a street date, and it’ll arrive just in time for Halloween.
That’s right, according to Bloody Disgusting, Hereditary, the latest modern-day horror masterstroke from A24 – who also brought us The Witch, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and It Comes at Night – will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on September 4th.
