Look, far be it from me to tell a young, diverse, and predominantly non-male group of horror-movie protagonists what to do. But if I were ever in a situation that involved dabbling with the supernatural in highly creepy settings while also breaking long-established rules involved with the aforementioned dabbling, I would simply not do that. Of course, there wouldn't be a movie for us to talk about here in that hypothetical, but that ain't my problem!
For better or worse (you can probably guess which one it is), nobody involved with the production of "Tarot" bothered to listen to my advice. For this group of college kids who committed the faux pas of all faux pas by messing with a tarot deck that wasn't theirs to begin with, the end result was ... pretty messy, to put it mildly. Hollywood constantly brings a new generation of stars to the horror genre in an effort to draw in younger viewers and provide an abundance of thrills. One example of this is Tarot, the latest horror film from Sony Pictures that stars a number of well-known up-and-coming actors. The cast features Jacob Batalon from Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avantika Vandanapu, the breakout cast member from Mean Girls.
Well, Tarot has caused quite a stir in the horror community as it heads to digital platforms much sooner than expected. Despite earning over 4 times its budget of $8 million, many horror fans are feeling slighted by the decision to release the film online so quickly.

As part of Sony's celebration of Columbia Pictures' 100th anniversary, every live-action Spider-Man movie is swinging back into theaters.
Dropping every Monday as part of the studio's "Spider-Mondays," we've seen over the past 5 weeks that there's a real appetite among moviegoers to see the wall-crawler back on the big screen.
Unfortunately, Spider-Man: Homecoming webbed up the lowest box office haul to date with a disappointing $285,000 opening day. With 466 theaters in the U.S. screening the movie, that works out to a far from amazing $612 per theater average.
Some will likely jump on this news to tear into the MCU, forgetting that Marvel Studios actually saved Spidey back in 2017 (following his memorable debut the year prior in Captain America: Civil War).
Understandably, there's less interest in seeing Tom Holland's Spider-Man back on the big screen because he's really not been gone that long. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and...

Though nobody seemed to be in favor of the brand new horror Tarot, things turned out to work quite well for the movie since its official theatrical release on May 3, at least partially.
Having been entirely crushed by critics and thus landing a miserable score of only 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, Tarot was nonetheless very quick to become an unexpected glowing success in the box office at home and worldwide.
Based on Nicholas Adams’ 1992 novel Horoscope, Tarot follows a group of friends who accidentally violate the most important rule of Tarot readings and use someone else’s Tarot deck.
Unwillingly they set some gruesome evil free and then embark on a race with death to discover the deck’s mystery until each one of them dies.
Upon its release less than two weeks ago, the flick starring Harriet Slater and Jacob Batalon never made it to impress the critics, but instead...

Underwhelming Debut Despite Jacob Batalon’s Charisma The recent release of Tarot on the cinematic landscape has not sparked the enthusiasm one might expect, despite featuring Jacob Batalon, a well-loved figure from blockbuster Spider-Man movies. James Durie remarked, Having Jacob Batalon, the breakout star of one of the biggest grossing Hollywood films of all time, as the lead actor obviously gives the series incredible global appeal—not just to Spider-Man fans but also wider audiences. Yet, Tarot‘s essence feels remarkably hollow. Tepid Reception and a Missed Opportunity Although the film managed a decent box office turnout with over $20 million globally against

Syfy has given a series order to Revival, a drama based on the comic book series of the same name, for a 2025 debut. The announcement was part of Syfy’s upcoming slate reveal ahead of the NBCU upfront presentation Monday.
It also included Reginald the Vampire, starring Jacob Batalon, whose second season premiered May 8, and The Ark, whose second season will follow this summer.
Not mentioned in the release are the two high-end, homegrown, UCP-produced Syfy scripted series, Chucky, which it shares with USA Network, and Resident Alien. While Part 2 of Chucky‘s third season just ended its run, the future of Resident Alien is in serious limbo.
As Deadline reported exclusively earlier this week, there are talks about the sci-fi series starring Alan Tudyk moving from Syfy to NBCU cable sibling USA Network, with a return to Syfy for Season 4 unlikely.

It is, generally speaking, ill-advised to go into creepy basements in rented mansions. It is also not a good idea to play with the hand-painted, sinister tarot cards found in the aforementioned basement. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the group of college pals in Tarot do.
Based on the 1992 YA novel Horrorscope, co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg’s debut feature is horror-by-numbers, with characters that scarcely deserve (or get) a name. Instead, they are introduced through their horoscope-assigned personalities, when they convince resident astrology girl Haley to read their tarot. Almost immediately, the malevolent force attached to the tarot cards starts picking them off, matching their deaths to the specific tarot cards they were dealt.
Walks the line between goofy and gruesome.
The inventiveness of the kills is what salvages Tarot from the depths of the digital bargain bin. The film walks the line between goofy and gruesome, particularly...

MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
Several months ago it was confirmed that ‘Spider-Man 4’ is in active development, so far we don’t know much about the movie except for a few confirmed cast members.
Tom Holland confirmed recently that he will always return to reprise his role as the web-slinger in the MCU since he owes his career to the franchise. He also confirmed that he has much more creative input now and that he needs to conserve the legacy...

Jon Watts Offers Important Advice for Spider-Man 4 Director - Main Image
Jon Watts recently offered advice for the new director who will be working on Spider-Man 4, which is still in the works.
Following the massive success of No Way Home in late 2021, Marvel Studios and Sony started developing a fourth movie that will continue Tom Holland's adventure as the iconic web-slinger in the MCU.
They are currently searching for a new director who will helm the project as Watts is not expected to return after working on the first three films. So far, no filmmaker has been tapped yet for the new installment.

If you're an Amazing Spider-Man reader, then you'll know that Ned Leeds and Hobgoblin have a complicated history. While Roderick Kingsley is the true villain behind the villain's mask, Ned was once brainwashed into suiting up and has caused a lot of problems for Spidey over the years.
Now the McU's Ned no longer remembers Peter Parker, it's possible Marvel Studios could find a way to make it so that their version of the character also suits up as Hobgoblin.
Concept art has confirmed the idea was very briefly considered for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but how does Jacob Batalon feel about it?
"Honestly, I'm not sure," he admitted in an interview with Cbr. "Again, we may have talked about things, for sure, but I don't know if it would've really led to anything serious about being a villain, or anything like that."
The odds of this happening seem slim,...

There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Sony’s Screen Gems brought horror back to the box office with the Tarot card-themed movie Tarot (formerly titled Horrorscope) over the weekend. The film debuted in theaters nationwide on Thursday, May 2, but how did it stack up against other new releases for the genre this year?

If you’ve ever fumbled through a dusty old deck of tarot cards, hoping they’d reveal something about your future, Tarot (2024) might just make you think twice before you shuffle again. This horror flick, helmed by first-timers Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, deals a hand that’s both terrifying and delightfully over-the-top. The film taps into the old-school charm of supernatural slashers, where a group of friends find themselves in a deadly game of cosmic consequences.

Guys rock! Who doesn't love guys? Whether they're free or falling, guys really have a lot to offer. The latest guy movie on the scene is "The Fall Guy," starring Ryan Gosling as the titular guy: a professional stunt guy who accidentally becomes targeted by a bunch of criminal guys. The film was directed by David Leitch, who has previously directed other guys in movies like "John Wick," "Deadpool 2," and "Bullet Train."
After grossing $10.4 million on its opening day, including $3.15 million from Thursday previews, "The Fall Guy" is now on track to gross around $28 million in its opening weekend (per Variety). That puts it on par with another recent guy movie, "Free Guy," which starred Ryan Gosling's fellow Ryan (and fellow guy), Ryan Reynolds. "Free Guy" grossed $28.3 million upon its release in 2021 and went on to make $331 million worldwide -- a modest success against its $100-125 million budget.

Before he returns to the role of Spider-Man’s best friend, “Guy in the Chair” and emergency sorcerer, Jacob Batalon is deepening his relationship with Sony Pictures. Today, Batalon is back on the big screen in the studio’s supernatural horror film, Tarot. Written and directed by Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen, Tarot chronicles seven college friends whose individual tarot card readings come to life in deadly fashion. Batalon plays Paxton, the impulsive life of the party within his friend group.
Tarot partially utilizes Batalon as comic relief, a role that he’s perfected since breaking out in Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but the film also allowed him to play afraid, something young actors often cite as being the most difficult emotion to play given the mechanics of a film set.

If we're comparing failed Final Destination rehashes, Tarot is up there with the worst. Writers and directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg aim for PG-13 sleepover-branded chills in Tarot, but sell the entire experience abysmally short. Their story about a cursed tarot deck is ludicrously underwritten and dopey, discarding established in-universe rationale mere minutes after cement dries. It's a movie that sequences events like they're mistakenly out of order, with Cohen and Halberg treating the audience like they’ve never seen a horror movie before — or maybe they’re praying we haven’t
In the film, stereotypical college students rent the equivalent of Scrooge McDuck's mansion on Airbnb for one of their birthdays. When the last beer can pops open, partiers panic and search the premises for hidden alcohol, which leads them into a musty once-locked basement filled with astrological artifacts — one being a hand-drawn deck of tarot cards in an engraved container.

Horror movies can grow from any place. That’s one of the most exciting aspects of the genre – any idea can become scary as hell in the right hands. With flicks like Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation surprising audiences, it’s not unreasonable to find great hits from even thin concepts. Tarot, the latest Sony and Screen Gems horror film, seeks to replicate this success. Unfortunately, despite great creature designs, Tarot stumbles over its own feet at every opportunity. The result is not only frustrating but an absolute slog.

Review: I almost had to check my calendar and make sure we weren’t in January. Usually, this level of horror is relegated to those dark winter months so I was surprised to see Tarot getting a May release. And then even further shocked to not see a single advertisement for the film. I go to the theater a lot and yet I wasn’t exposed to a single Tarot trailer. Never a good sign of a film’s quality. But also brings the advantage of having absolutely nothing spoiled for me leading in. Even still, this film is so generic that I feel like I’d not only seen the trailer,...

“Tarot” has the makings of a classic sleepover horror movie, fine-tuned for an astrology-obsessed Gen Z. When a group of friends accidentally read their horoscopes with the help of a cursed set of Tarot cards, scary symbols like “The Magician” and “The High Priestess” come to life and start haunting the group. Blending elements of classic supernatural slashers and the “Final Destination” movies, the film stars a game group of twentysomethings, including Harriet Slater, Jacob Batalon and Larsen Thompson.
Here, Thompson, who has also appeared in spooky projects such as the 2018 film “Bloodline” and the 2022 series “The Midnight Club,” reveals the tricks of the trade for surviving as an actor on the set of a horror film.
1) How to play dead
A lot of that, of course, is holding your breath. For me, the trick has always been “belly breathing.” Most of my work is leading up to when I need to hold my breath,...

Set in a world where every door creaks and there isn’t a single well-lit location, “Tarot” is little more than a clearinghouse of horror clichés.
Co-written, directed and executive produced by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (the podcast series “Classified”), the supernatural thriller repeatedly leverages the genre’s laziest mood-setting and suspense-building devices to keep its audience on the edge of their seats. But even featuring a moderately charming ensemble led by “Spider-Man: Homecoming” breakout Jacob Batalon, the film’s PG-13 rating — and lack of virtually any characters other than its doomed protagonists — severely limits the efficacy of those techniques and tropes even when they’re deployed skillfully.
Batalon plays Paxton, the wisecracker among a studiously diverse college-age friend group that rents a remote mansion to celebrate the birthday of Elise (Larsen Thompson). Scouring their rental for booze, the group foolishly breaks into a room marked “Keep Out,” where...

Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg keep it simple with the PG-13 horror movie Tarot. Instead of a cold open to hook audiences on the horror, Tarot launches straight into introducing the group of seven friends partaking in a party weekend at an isolated manor.
It’s there that they dabble with things they shouldn’t, setting in motion a curse that will pick them off one by one, slasher style. With an equal group of monsters to match, Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.
The moment the beer runs dry, forcing the friends to seek entertainment elsewhere, birthday girl Elise (Larsen Thompson) insists that Haley (Harriet Slater) puts her tarot knowledge to good use when they find a mysterious deck within the house. Haley warns that it’s extremely bad luck to borrow...

An evil curse gets awakened in Screen Gems horror movie Tarot when a group of friends recklessly ignore a sacred rule: never use someone else’s deck. Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg unleash a variety of Tarot card-inspired entities on the group through practical effects, and create an unexpected connection to Insidious along the way.
The film comes exclusively to movie theaters on May 3, 2024.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cohen and Halberg ahead of Tarot‘s release, where the pair shared more about the film’s practical effects-driven horrors and revealed how Tarot drew from Insidious in a specific way.
To start, though, the filmmakers reveal just how closely their horror movie sticks to the source novel Horrorscope by Nicholas Adams. The short answer is, well, it doesn’t at all!
Cohen explains, “It’s so different. We never even read the book and took nothing from the book. The only thing,...

Normally, the summer movie season would kick off with a Marvel superhero movie, but this May, we’re doing things a little differently. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This year and for the first time since the pandemic, Marvel isn’t launching the month of May. Instead, Universal jumped on the date for its new action comedy “The Fall Guy,” loosely based on the popular ’80s series starring Lee Majors. Two of the Oscar-nominated stars from last year’s blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenom unite for this new action rom-com from filmmaker David Leitch (“Bullet Train”). Those stars, of course, are Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who were nominated for Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s Best Picture-winning “Oppenheimer,” respectively, two of the biggest movies of 2023. “The Fall Guy” premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival and even played at the annual exhibitors’ convention, CinemaCon,...
