Currently at Gold Derby, seven of our 10 Experts from major media outlets predict that Season 2 of “The Bear” will sweep the comedy races at the 2024 Golden Globes. These savvy prognosticators have it cooking up wins for Best Comedy Series, Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto for Best Comedy Actor and Ayo Edebiri as Sydney Adamu for Best Comedy Actress. If they’re right, that would put “The Bear” on the same exotic menu as “30 Rock” (with leads Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin) and “Roseanne” (with leads Roseanne Barr and John Goodman), both of which claimed the comedy trifecta in 2009 and 1993, respectively.

Amazon’s new miniseries Daisy Jones & the Six clearly draws from the turbulent excellence that defined the peak years of Fleetwood Mac. But the adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel also uses the careers of other important artists of the era for inspiration. The character of Simone Jackson (Nabiyah Be) was based on the stardom of three timeless singers from the 1970s. Her plotline takes the same shape in the TV version as it does in the book. But the screen highlights certain details to heighten the emotional stakes of Simone’s story.

Daisy Jones & The Six is a love letter to the ’70s, complete with the decade’s unparalleled rock’n’roll flavor and sense of style. The limited series on Amazon Prime is based on the bestselling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and follows a fictional band that’s loosely based on the rise and fall of Fleetwood Mac in its heyday.
Several of the cast members took inspiration from the real-life band, but Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie weren’t the only women who served as models for the actors. Some, like Linda Ronstadt and Cher, became part of the fabric of the show as well.

“The Good Nurse” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 11, 2022 and is available to stream on Netflix on October 26. Critics are giving high marks to the film from director Tobias Lindholm, cementing its place in the Oscar conversation this awards season. The cast is led by Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne and tells the true story of Amy Loughren, a nurse suspicious that her colleague Charlie Cullen (Redmayne) is responsible for a series of mysterious patient deaths. With a score of 77 on Rotten Tomatoes, let’s look at what some critics are saying.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, Redmayne is in the best position to return to the Oscars for playing against type in this sinister role. He ranks ninth in our Best Supporting Actor odds with support of four experts: Christopher Rosen, Wilson Morales, Andrea Mandell and Shawn Edwards (who currently predicts the “Theory...

It has been a few weeks now since it was announced that Michelle Williams would be campaigned as a lead actress at the Oscars for “The Fabelmans,” thereby vacating the front-runner spot in our odds for Best Supporting Actress. Two standout performers from “Women Talking” then assumed the top positions by default, but the question was, would they stay there once Expert journalists started updating their forecasts? As it turns out, yes.
As of this writing Jessie Buckley leads the Experts’ Oscar forecasts with 21 predicting she’ll be nominated and nine saying she’ll win: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Susan King (Gold Derby), Wilson Morales (Black Film and TV), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Anne Thompson (IndieWire), and Peter Travers (ABC). The Oscar race for Best Supporting Actor is one of the most uncertain of the year. Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans“) led initially, but once the film premiered his co-star Judd Hirsch started to take some of his momentum, and an actor from a different film took over the lead in Expert journalists’ odds: Ke Huy Quan in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” It would be only the second win in the category by an Asian actor (following Haing S. Ngor for “The Killing Fields”), and the first for an actor of Vietnamese descent.
See‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ may be the latest film to win writing Oscar for being the Most original screenplay

Before “The Fabelmans” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Paul Dano was the presumptive favorite to win Best Supporting Actor for his role in Steven Spielberg‘s semiautobiographical drama. But there has been a major shift in the forecasts of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed. Dano has lost a little bit of ground, slipping down to second place, while his co-star Judd Hirsch has skyrocketed to third place.
There are currently 17 Experts betting on the Oscars. Of those, 12 are predicting a Best Supporting Actor nom for Dano with two saying he’ll win for his role as the father of a teenage boy who aspires to be a filmmaker: Susan King (Gold Derby) and Jazz Tangcay (Variety). But now there are 11 predicting a nom for Hirsch with three picking him to win as the boy’s elderly uncle: Michael Musto (Queerty), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), and Peter Travers...

Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) has taken over the lead in our Oscar Experts’ predictions for Best Actor. This follows his film’s premieres at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, both of which ended in lengthy standing ovations. Fraser is also the recipient of a tribute award at the Toronto fest, which could be just the start of his awards journey.
Fraser stars in the film as a 600-pound man trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter after abandoning his family. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky and has been met with generally positive, though not glowing reviews — 64 on MetaCritic, 78 fresh on Rotten Tomatoes — but Fraser’s performance has been called “fully and radiantly human,” “a confident leap forward,” and “a truly great comeback performance.”

“Succession” led all programs when the 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, July 12. It received 25 nominations including Best Drama Series. That’s more nominations than the show received for its first and second seasons combined. But that’s not the only noteworthy program achievement from the list of nominations.

The 2022 Emmy race for Best Drama Series isn’t over just yet. While a majority of our Experts predict HBO’s “Succession” will win, the other two choose Netflix’s “Squid Game.” Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are journalists from major media outlets who cover television and/or the awards season. See their individual predictions right here.
“Succession” is up for its third season after winning Best Drama Series the last time it was eligible, for its second season in 2020. Also that year it took home trophies for lead actor (Jeremy Strong), guest actress (Cherry Jones), directing (Andrij Parekh), writing (Jesse Armstrong), casting and picture editing. For it debut season in 2019, the HBO family drama only won two Emmys: writing (Armstrong) and main title theme music (Nicholas Britell).

As the fall festivals started the Oscar ball rolling in September, Jane Campion‘s Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” skyrocketed to the top of our odds for Best Picture based on the combined Oscar predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. As of Sunday, October 10, the film is still out front overall, but fellow fest favorite “Belfast” has slipped past it in the forecasts of the Expert film journalists we’ve surveyed.
It’s close, though. Six Experts are currently betting on Kenneth Branagh‘s period drama about the Troubles in Northern Ireland: Clayton Davis (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), and Jazz Tangcay (Variety). But five are still predicting “Power of the Dog”: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Matthew Jacobs, Susan King (Gold Derby), Wilson Morales (Black Film and TV), and Anne Thompson (IndieWire). And “Power...

In 1997, Gillian Anderson won her first career Emmy Award for playing FBI Agent Dana Scully on Fox’s sci-fi hit “The X-Files.” After nearly tripping on her way up to the stage (watch above), the actress praised Helen Mirren, who presented her with the statuette, and thanked her friends and family. Now, 24 years later, Anderson is on track to claim Emmy #2 thanks to her buzzed-about role as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown.”
As of this writing, all 24 of our Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict Anderson will prevail in Best Drama Supporting Actress. That translates to overwhelming 4/1 odds to win. Her fellow nominees, in order of our Experts’ rankings, are Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”), Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Aunjanue Ellis (“Lovecraft Country”), Emerald Fennell (“The Crown”) and Madeline Brewer (“The Handmaid’s Tale”).

For much of the season, Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”) has dominated Gold Derby’s odds with a majority of our everyday Users predicting her to win for the HBO Max comedy. However, most of our Emmy Experts who hail from major media outlets have now switched to another HBO Max scene-stealer, Jean Smart (“Hacks”). Which group do You think is right?
