One of the most successful cinematic universes in Hollywood doesn't have any superheroes, isn't set in outer space, and wasn't originally designed as a cinematic universe at all. James Wan's 2013 horror movie "The Conjuring" was made on a budget of just $20 million but became a stunning box office success, grossing more than $320 million worldwide. That success has since spawned a whole world of horror that includes not only two "Conjuring" sequels, but also the spin-off "Annabelle" trilogy, two "Nun" movies, and (tenuously) "The Curse of La Llorona."
A big part of what makes the "Conjuring" movies so frightening is their commitment to practical effects. The strangest supernatural feats are achieved using wire work, contortionists, and stunt performers, while monsters like the Nun and the Crooked Man are real actors in make-up.

Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.
Here’s how to watch all the “Conjuring” movies in chronological order, all the way back to the Dark Ages.
The Nun (2018): 1300s, 1952, 1971 The Nun (Warner Bros.)
While the bulk of the film about the Nun (aka Valak), who first appears in “The Conjuring 2,” is set in 1952 Romania, a...

Stand back, Marvel Cinematic Universe. Be gone, DC Extended Universe. The power of The Conjuring Universe compels you!
It may astonish those who aren't horror fans or haven't been paying attention, but 2013's "The Conjuring" has not only spawned two direct sequels, but two entire spin-off film franchises that are still going strong: the "Annabelle" series and "The Nun" films. In fact, the latter's latest installment — oh-so-helpfully entitled "The Nun II" — is due to haunt theaters everywhere on September 8, 2023.
If you can't quite recall where and when we last saw the only married demonologist team in the tri-county area, Ed and Lorraine Warren, or if you're having trouble separating your La Lloronas from your Valaks, fear not! The following will not only get you up to speed with the ghouls, demons, and ghosts of The Conjuring Universe, but it will also lay out the tangled timeline of the entire series in chronological order.

ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” Apple TV Plus’ “Little Voice” and Netflix’s “Locke & Key” and “Away” are the four television series that have just earned the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Seal of Authentic Representation, Variety has learned exclusively.
Additionally, the foundation is awarding the seal, which is given to those projects that demonstrate a commitment toward authentic representation of people with disabilities by featuring actors with disabilities in a speaking role with at least five lines, to two films: “Sam & Mattie Make a Zombie Movie” and “Run.”
“With each and every authentic casting decision, Hollywood takes another crucial step toward fulfilling its true and long-unrealized potential as a beacon of inclusion and diversity in all its forms,” said Jay Ruderman, president of the Ruderman Family Foundation. “The latest recipients of the Seal of Authentic Representation, building off the momentum generated by our previous rounds of honorees, powerfully exhibit the...

Netflix’s Away is going, well, away: The streamer has cancelled the Hilary Swank-starring space drama after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports.
The series, which premiered Sept. 4 and which counted Friday Night Lights boss Jason Katims among its executive producers, followed Commander Emma Green (played by Swank) and her international crew as they began a three-year trip to Mars in the near future. Emma’s four-person team consisted of Misha from Russia (Mark Ivanir, Homeland), Kwesi from Ghana/England (Ato Essandoh, Chicago Med), Lu from China (Vivian Wu, The Pillow Book) and Ram (Ray Panthaki, EastEnders). (Warning: This post does contain some spoilers for “Away” on Netflix).
Do you need faith in a higher power to get through a strenuous mission to Mars? In Netflix’s Hilary Swank-led space drama series “Away,” showrunner Jessica Golberg found the oh-so-subtlest ways to ask that very question with an intertwining theme of faith and religion — which we just couldn’t help but notice.
For instance, consider how one of the five astronauts on the mission to Mars, Dr. Kwesi Weisberg-Abban (Ato Essandoh), was left orphaned when his birth parents died and was then adopted by a Jewish woman and her husband. Throughout the eight-month mission, Kwesi often prays openly, and in the final episode he even ends up swaying the usually agnostic Dr. Lu Wang (Vivian Wu), who asks him to lead them in prayer as they approach their difficult and potentially fatal landing on Mars.

"Scotland is clutched in the grip of a mighty hand... Now, we'll set her free!" Screen Media Films has just released another official Us trailer for the Scottish historical action drama Robert the Bruce, made by Australian director Richard Gray. Robert the Bruce is a hard-hitting historical epic covering the turbulent time after William Wallace's victories depicted in Braveheart. This originally premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year - which is when we featured the first UK trailer. Angus Macfadyen stars (playing the same role he played in Braveheart), joined by a big cast with Jared Harris, Zach McGowan, Daniel Portman, Emma Kenney, Melora Walters, Anna Hutchison, Talitha Eliana Bateman, Patrick Fugit, Gabriel Bateman, and Kevin McNally. The film also features original music from Scottish national treasure Lulu. This looks like it might be good, or might very boring, and they're definitely playing off of "Game of Thrones" being over.

Time to plunge into a movie genre that strikes fear in many a film goer (or it does so with me, I’ll admit). No, it’s not a horror, monster, or thriller flick, nor from the sub-genres like “torture porn” or the played out “found video footage”. Nope, this is an adaptation, or to be precise it’s based on a “young adult” novel, but (here’s the good news) it’s not from a series like “The Maze Runner” or “Divergent”. Whew, thank heaven for small favors. This one’s a coming of age story set in the lead character’s last months of high school, full of dreams and romantic entanglements. Hmmm, sounds a whole lot like last year’s critical darling, and Oscar shut-out (awww) Lady Bird. Well, that’s where the similarities end. Lb was set around 16 years ago, and it was a low-budget, non-studio...

Annabelle: Creation begins on an isolated patch of California somewhere in the 1950’s. The beginning shots walk us through a doll makers’ trade. Unsettling close-ups of paint cracked faces, some with dead eyes, some with no eyes at all. Wooden arms and legs dangle in and out of focus as the masters’ hand fits the pieces together. By the end, we’re introduced to Annabelle, the most hideous doll ever hand crafted. You’ve probably seen this opening creation scene play out before. Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play 2; it’s horror movie standard.
Quickly we’re introduced to the Mullins family. Samuel Mullins is a loving husband and father who makes a comfortable living with his dolls. His dolls are so popular,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Almost hilariously terrible: absurd plot machinations, dubious politics, not a single character to care about. And it doesn’t even give good disaster porn. I’m “biast” (pro): big science fiction fan
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of what Hollywood often does with sci fi
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Who was it who said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it”? Well, we showed that guy! After the catastrophic weather year of 2019 (which apparently made 2017 look like a pleasantly warm and breezy day), we — that is, humanity — “fought back” against, I guess, ourselves and the climate disasters we brought upon our planet, by launching a network of weather-control satellites covering the entire globe, and operated from a newly supercool International Space Station, which has a big wheel and gravity and factories to make more satellites,...

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Warner Bros. Director: David F. Sandberg. Writers: Gary Dauberman. Cast: Anthony Lapaglia, Samara Lee, Miranda Otto, Stephanie Sigman and Talitha Eliana Bateman. Annabelle: Creation is latest film set in an expanding Conjuring film universe. This title is a prequel to the first Annabelle (2014) movie. Very much an origin story, Annabelle: Creation explores the curse of a very recognizable doll. The film was written by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote the first Annabelle. In this outing, six orphans find a new, haunted place to live. Isolated on an old farm, the six girls are harassed by either a Devil doll or very dark demon. The focus on this title is on developing creepy scenes. Very much like a haunted house ride put to film, Annabelle: Creation offers one well rehearsed scare after another. The film is also a popcorn flick,...

(Aotn) Annabelle Creation, is an epic installment in the Annabelle series. The movie acts as a prequel to Annabelle which came out in 2014. The two Annabelle movies tie into the Conjuring universe. The movie revolves around a group of girls from a local Orphanage who move into an isolated farmhouse, and live with parents who are still dealing with the death of there daughter twelve years earlier.
Annabelle Creation was directed by David F. Sandberg who also directed the fright filled, Light’s Out. Sandberg’s obvious expertise in directing jump scares are at an all time high in this movie. I found myself covering my eyes on more than a few occasions. But that is not to say that the movie was good just because of the jump scares. The pacing and storytelling of the film are done to perfection.

Annabelle: Creation is one of 2017’s scariest films!
Variety reports: “Annabelle: Creation,” which conjured $35 million in its opening to dominate an otherwise lackluster frame last weekend, will wind up the weekend with about $64 million in its first 10 days. The film is the fourth in New Line’s highly profitable “Conjuring” universe and should see the combined worldwide grosses hit the $1 billion mark this weekend, thanks to 2013’s “The Conjuring,” 2014’s “Annabelle,” 2016’s “The Conjuring 2,” and “Annabelle: Creation.” Next up is “The Nun,” starring Taissa Farmiga and Demian Bichir and due out July 13.
In his review, Michael Haffner says “it proudly stands next to The Conjuring films as delivering real scares. What helps with this is making the audience afraid of not just the doll, but of what other being is haunting the house as well as the always hidden mother. It’s a terrifying trifecta that fits perfectly into the ominous surroundings.

"Leave us alone!" FilmRise has debuted an official trailer for a new action film titled Vengeance: A Love Story, adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel titled Rape: A Love Story. The story is about a local police officer who goes for vengeance when a local gang rapes a woman. The criminals find a way to walk away free thanks to a hot shot lawyer, and so the detective takes matters into his own hands. Nicolas Cage stars as John Dromoor, with a cast including Anna Hutchison, Talitha Bateman, Deborah Kara Unger, Don Johnson, Joshua Mikel, Rocco Nugent, Joe Ochterbeck, Carter Burch, and Charlene Tilton. This looks like a generic vengeance movie, especially with Nicolas Cage, but who knows. It's also interesting they removed the word "rape" from any description of this film, but it's definitely a major part of the plot. Here's the first trailer (+ new poster) for Johnny Martin...

A bit of a surprise this, as the new Annabelle movie punches above its weight a little. Here's our review...
There's likely to be some justifiable trepidation about the quality of Annabelle: Creation, the fourth film in what the marketing now bills as 'the Conjuring universe', given the poor reception for the first Annabelle spin-off and the generally low hit-rate of studio horror movies among even moderately well-read genre fans.
But it's not even 12 months since director Mike Flanagan turned Ouija: Origin Of Evil into one of the most surprising films of last year. His prequel to the profitable but poor Hasbro horror was an engaging and creative chiller, and Creation has drawn favourable comparisons for the way in which it also brings in a new director - David F Sandberg, fresh off last year's Lights Out - to reinvigorate the latest studio-mandated spin-off. It hardly reaches the heights that Flanagan did,...

These two young actresses are definitely rising stars due to their acting range and maturity in the Hollywood business.
Talitha Bateman marks her major studio debut with Annabelle: Creation as a polio-stricken girl, who is haunted by a demon possessed in a doll. And Lulu Wilson plays her emotional and vulnerable best friend at the orphanage. Wilson was previously known for her terrific performance in another horror film Ouija: Origin of Evil.
The two girls star in Director David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation alongside Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings), Anthony Lapaglia (Without a Trace), and Alicia Vela-Bailey (Lights Out).
The film is a prequel to 2014’s highly successful Annabelle. It tells of the origin story on how the creepy doll was created and possessed. The doll ends up haunting a group of orphan girls.
Lrm participated in a roundtable interview with a few reporters and the two young actresses.

Annabelle: Creation heads into theaters nationwide today. It serves as the origin story on how the Annabelle is first created for The Conjuring universe.
The film stars Stephanie Sigman (Miss Bala), Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings), Lulu Wilson (Ouija: Origin of Evil), Anthony Lapaglia (Without A Trace), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave) and Alicia Vela-Bailey (Lights Out). It’s directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out).
We managed to catch actress Stephanie Sigman over the phone for the busy promotion for Annabelle: Creation. She told us about the lure of playing a nun character, which is quite different from playing a Bond girl on Spectre or a pageant model turned drug dealer in Miss Bala. She also discussed her personal beliefs in the supernatural and admitted that it was her who asked for the set to be blessed from evil.

2014’s Annabelle, which served as the prequel to The Conjuring, was a film that underwhelmed. Quite frankly, it felt like not only a cash grab benefiting on the success of The Conjuring but it didn’t even come close to any of the bars which were raised by James Wan’s film. In fact, the only successful scene in Annabelle was the basement sequence, which James Wan directed. Was it a case of acting too quickly or possibly giving the heavy reins to someone with weak hands? Annabelle: Creation was handed over to newcomer David F. Sandberg who directed 2016’s Lights Out, which seemed to be a success for Warner Bros. Annabelle: Creation is a prequel (the title should have told you that) to Annabelle and, to note, is the first film being advertised as a film in “The Conjuring universe” (more on that later).

Who hasn't been totally terrified by an ad for Annabelle: Creation at some point over the past few weeks? Indeed, demonic dolls do tend to have that effect on people. But we'll rest a little bit easier knowing for sure that the film's young star Talitha Bateman is safe and sound and decidedly untraumatized from her experience starring in the horror prequel, which tells how the creepy titular toy of Annabelle fame came into existence. Which isn't to say that Talitha herself isn't extremely self-possessed. "I like good horror films, but I prefer psychological thrillers," the 15-year-old actress tells E! News, assuring us that...

Will we ever see a movie star once again rise through the ranks in the way that actors such as Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep did? In today’s tech frenzied world, actors and fans can engage via several social media sites. Speaking recently at a press conference for his upcoming Netflix film, Bright, A-list star Will Smith talked about how he doesn’t think movie stars can be made today the same way they were in the past.
“Essentially the fans being more and more involved in the creative process, you know, in terms of movie stardom it's a huge difference. It's like you almost can't make new movie stars anymore”
Stars are still being made, but perhaps not in the traditional ways of the past. Social media can and has influenced Hollywood. While YouTube hasn't made any big movie stars yet (my guess is it is only a...

One of Andrew Wyeth’s most famous paintings is “Christina’s World.” It depicts a woman immobilized, lying on a grassy hill, reaching out towards a farmhouse that sits isolated in the distance. There was a young girl in Wyeth’s town who suffered from Polio, which forced her to crawl about. Emotions of loneliness, desperation, and fear are expressed even though the subject’s face is turned away from the viewer. This famous painting that has now traveled the world in exhibitions and as a postage stamp served as inspiration for Tobe Hooper’s 1974 cinematic masterpiece, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Director David F. Sandberg (last year’s Lights Out) seems to have also been influenced by this striking and haunting painting. Annabelle: Creation feels like a southern-gothic folktale, not unlike Pumpkinhead. And like the aforementioned painting, the main lead girl also suffers from Polio, causing her to walk slowly in a leg brace.

David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation proves that history does, in fact, repeat itself – and not by following in John R. Leonetti’s footsteps (director of Annabelle). Sandberg takes a page out of Ouija: Origin Of Evil‘s playbook, going the period route to recalibrate via prequel beginnings. Warner Brothers trusted their up-and-coming horror workhorse to salvage Annabelle’s name, much like how Mike Flannagan made Ouija relevant again. In every sense of the phrase, Annabelle Creation is 2017’s Ouija: The Original Of Evil. Noticeably improved upon, wicked in haunts and smart to cast little Lulu Wilson (child actor from Ouija: Origin Of Evil). It ain’t October yet, but who says you can’t squeeze a few screams in before summer dries up?
Annabelle’s origin takes us to the Mullins residence, circa 1950. Samuel Mullins (Anthony Lapaglia), a retired toymaker, offers his roomy estate to a Catholic orphanage with no other options.

Forget The Dark Universe. The best horror franchise currently in play belongs to James Wan, whose “The Conjuring” spin-offs delivers a world filled with nightmarish creatures like The Crooked Man, The Nun, and a doll that could make even Chucky’s blood run cold. Welcome to the frightful terrain of “Annabelle,” now equipped with a whole movie to provide its backstory.
Although 2014’s “Annabelle” did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, reviews were less than stellar. But the surprise success of Mike Flanagan’s “Ouija: Origin of Evil” offered a solution that was likely too good to ignore: hire an indie horror director to create a prequel-sequel set in the past. And so, the hideously scary doll of the first installment was reborn, this time with “Lights Out” director David F. Sandberg behind the camera.

In Annabelle: Creation, both Talitha Bateman and Lulu Wilson are pushed to their limits as they battle against the evil influences of the prequel's titular doll who terrorizes them relentlessly (especially Bateman, whose character Janice is put through the paces and then some).

New Line Cinema’s Annabelle: Creation —the follow up to 2014’s hugely successful film Annabelle —will arrive in theatres on August 11, 2017.
WaterTower Music has released the soundtrack from the film, which you can order here.
Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Benjamin Wallfisch (upcoming It, A Cure For Wellness, Lights Out) is recognized as one of the leading film composers of his generation. His masterfully unnerving 24-track Annabelle: Creation film score offers a potent dimension of eeriness that magnifies the suspenseful discomfort when set against picture.

2017-08-10T07:22:39-07:00Can 'Annabelle: Creation' Have a Winning Weekend?
New Line's origin horror film Annabelle: Creation shouldn't have much trouble topping the North American box office this weekend, although overall it looks like another slow session as the dog days of August wear on.
The latest installment in the successful horror franchise is tracking to open in the $25 million-$30 million range from more than 3,400 theaters. While that's a lower start than the previous three movies, it would still be a solid launch considering the general malaise that has resulted in summer box office revenue running behind last year by as much as 10 percent.

MaryAnn’s quick take… All familiar funhouse spooks telegraphed a mile out, with no spiritual or psychological weight, but with some very young girls terrorized for your entertainment. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Forget possessed dolls and demons that Want Your Soul. The most unbelievable thing about Annabelle: Creation is that it hopes we will accept that its titular doll, that ghoul-faced monstrosity with the sunken eyes and sallow skin, was actually something lovingly created by a kindly dollmaker in the image of his beloved and beautiful little daughter, and — even more implausible still — that his customers positively clamored to take these dolls home and bestow them upon impressionable children.
I am not buying that at all.

In what is the second spin-off to come out of The Conjuring franchise, one of the series’ defining features is the period setting, with each film set across the decade that spans from the late 60s to the late 70s. Don't write this Annabelle: Creation film off because the first movie wasn't that good. That first Annabelle film was rushed into production to capitalize off the success of The Conjuring. But, this sequel is the real deal. This sequel looks like a great film that tells a great story, and I'm totally excited about seeing it! I've heard great things about this film from people who have seen it, and if you're a fan of horror films, you won't want to miss out on this one.
Today we have a couple new clips from the film for you to watch. These are both pretty fun clips and each one offers up a wonderfully creepy scene that I think you'll enjoy.

It is without a doubt--Annabelle is one creepy doll to venture on to the big screen.
Originally based on the real demon possessed doll alleged by Ed and Lorraine Warren, Annabelle: Creation will be the prequel that tells the fictional origin story from 2014’s Annabelle movies.
Warner Brothers recruited Lights Out director David F. Sandberg to the helm after his very successful and scary feature film debut. The origin story looks at a dollmaker and his wife, who created a large doll to be a vessel for a spirit after the tragic death of their daughter. To make amends, they invited a nun and several orphans to live in their home years later. Unbeknownst to everyone, Annabelle soon targeted the invited guests in the terrifying movie Annabelle: Creation.

So much attention has been paid to Warner Bros. and New Line’s future plans for their fledgling Conjuring universe that it’s almost easy to forget that the latest instalment, Annabelle: Creation, is right around the corner.
Pegged for theatrical release on August 11th, the nightmarish prequel comes to us by way of Swedish director David F.
