Meet the top 10!
American Idol cut its 20 semifinalists – 10 guys and 10 girls – in half on Thursday – with few, if any, surprises. In the 90-minute show, Seacrest announced the lucky ones in an offstage room and then led them to the stage.
The finalists, named below (guys first), walked through sliding doors to a surprised and adoring crowd to sing an emotional victory song and take in the judges' praise.

How do you take the task of announcing the names of American Idol‘s Season 12 finalists and stretch it out over a 90-minute telecast? Well, you can start with a super-awkward framework for the episode that requires Ryan Seacrest to dash back and forth from the stage to a tiny holding room, retrieving finalists one at a time and leaving the unfortunate castoffs to stew in their own anxiety and terror.
The good news, however, is that Nigel Lythgoe & Co. introduced the idea of a victory song for each singer before he or she decamped to the Idol Couches of Safety (Tm). Okay,...

It's time to whittle down the Top 20 men and women to the Top 10 finalists on "American Idol." If we had our say, it would be Angela Miller, Candice Glover, Kree Harrison, Amber Holcomb, Janelle Arthur, Elijah Liu, Curtis Finch Jr., Nick Boddington, Devin Velez and Burnell Taylor.
If we didn't have to have even gender picks, we would substitute in Aubrey Cleland and Breanna Steer for Elijah and Devin.
After a lot of filler and a commercial and a video recap of last night, we finally get to some results. The first person into the Top 10 is Paul Jolley. Huh. Did not expect that. Oh, this is why the show is 90 minutes -- each person is performing. Oh, dear. Let's just say his "Alone" is ... he's no Carrie Underwood.
The next guy to advance is Burnell Taylor, which is correct. Well done, American public. His "Ready for Love" is nice,...

American Idol's Top 10 men have one thing in common: Like the best/worst politicians, they're sure that their "sincerity" and teary-eyed stage presence warrant massive attention. Please, Curtis Finch Jr. Admittedly, this is a batch of mostly good vocalists and fine dressers (with a couple of notable exceptions, like the now-deflated phenomenon known as Charlie Askew), but the male half of season 12 reeks of eager-to-please spinelessness. I wouldn't write off a few of these chaps, though. Not by a long shot.
Let's rank 'em all, worst to first. Be sure to look out for my livid appraisal of Keith Urban's horrible judging. Cheers!
10. Charlie Askew, Genesis' "Mama"
Dear lord. I don't know what's more grating: Charlie's elfin whine or his entitled attitude and crocodile tears. After screeching this Genesis tune with as little attention to pitch as possible, Mr. Askew proceeded to fuel his own breakdown during the judges' critiques.

Nick Boddington - Top 10 Boys - American Idol 12 by IdolxMuzic
For his "American Idol" Top 10 men performance, Nick Boddington got back behind the piano for "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls -- and it totally worked for him. We loved the small changes he made to the melody line and his tone and tenderness.
"Perfect. What a perfect song for you. I love you playing the piano and singing ... there's a vulnerability about your tone. I feel it every time you sing," says Keith Urban. Mariah Carey adds, "I was happy to see you at the piano ... you really kicked in at the end. You really got to that place where you were strong, you were confident."
What do you think, "Idol" fans? Is it enough to make Nick one of the Top 10 finalists?...

So, after a pretty strong night from the ladies on "American Idol" Tuesday (March 5), we hope you've got some stiff drinks at hand to help you get through this gauntlet of awful.
Sorry, do we sound bitter? It's because we are. Most of these guys have been atrocious so far.
1. Elijah Liu, "Stay," Rihanna
Interesting song choice, but he definitely has the sweet tenor to pull it off. This is actually pretty nice. There are a few bum notes here and there, but he has such a pretty tone. It's not blowing our wig off, but it wasn't bad. We just wish he had done a little more with it. The song didn't really go anywhere. More oomph, more personality would've been good.
Urban is right that the song suited his voice -- it really did. Nicki manages not to be too gross towards this young man, then comments on his marketability,...

A woman is going to win Season 12 of American Idol — even if executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is forced to stage a crossover episode with Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, plant a couple of hungry lionesses down in the SwayBot pit and let the male contestants get picked off in violent, carnivorous fashion.

The Top 10 girls of American Idol season 12 threw down the gauntlet last night, and tonight the Top 10 guys will attempt to answer the challenge. And what a big challenge it is.
Can the guys match the girls' talent? Let's find out now...
Elijah Liu starts the night with Rihanna's "Stay." It's a bold move to take on a song currently receiving so much airplay, and one written for a female voice at that. It starts off really nicely, but he's not very dynamic during the performance. He plays it safe and doesn't show much of his range. Keith thought the song suited Elijah's voice and showed control. Nicki loved it and still wants to have Elijah's babies. Randy felt the performance was flat and didn't really go anywhere compared to his performance last week. Mariah thought it was one of his better performances and liked his decision to choose a song with intimate lyrics.

I hate apologizing on behalf of American Idol. We should be enjoying this! This is our joy! My joy! My Seacrest-sponsored rapture. My karaoke vomitorium pandemonium extravaganza. But sigh. Every once in awhile Idol is a silly suckfest for losers, and tonight was one of those nights. Ten dudes entered, and I'm telling you that at least eight of them were lame enough to dismiss completely. Randy Jackson shrugs wildly and pouts, "What is going on here?!" Besides you and your patronizing chuckles, Randy, not much.
Before we begin, it's time to note that Nicki Minaj's "infuriated" reactions whenever Mariah Carey speaks are annoying. What is she reacting to? Anything? It makes me mad. And then, of course Mariah makes me mad with her simplistic, pandering critiques and nervous, non-committal energy. Ugh! Hop on your jetski and hit me with some of that "Honey" video swag, M.C.!

American Idol has been on the air for 12 seasons. From the early days of Kelly Clarkson, the judges continually hounded the contestants on song choice. Simon Cowell (remember him?) would criticize contestants for being "cabaret," "old-fashioned" and, worst of all, "boring." Some of this season's contestants have been watching Idol since they were in elementary school, which makes it all the more inexplicable that they still choose to sing songs like Peggy Lee's "Fever," which is 57 years old.
The show began with the 10 contestants rising from the floor, Hunger Games-style. Five of them will continue, while five of them met their end.

After how weak the men were last week and the ridiculous pick of Zoanette last night, we are kind of dreading "American Idol" tonight, fans. Let's hope this final group in Las Vegas can be as strong as the first round of women.
The judges are introduced and once again, Mariah Carey has on a very low-cut top. You'd think after her nip slip, she'd rein those puppies in a little better.
1. Mathenee Treco, "A Little Less Conversation," Elvis
This is a really fun song, but it's not a song for a vocalist. The melody has about four notes and the lyrics are too fast, plus he has slowed it down, which does make the lyrics a little easier to understand, but it makes the song lose a lot of its fun swagger. This is very karaoke and his falsetto stuff is all over the place. This should (hopefully) not...

It's the final night of Sudden Death on American Idol. The guys in the competition so far haven't been spectacular. The remaining 10 will sing for the judges and then the judges, perhaps with the help of our pal Jimmy Iovine, will send half of them home.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead. Here's who got the boot: "Turbanator" Gurpreet Singh Sarin; earnest Bryant Tadeo; sweet David Willis; bro-y Mathenee Treco, and ambitious singer-songwriter Josh Holiday, who could totally be the physical and spiritual love child of David Cook and Kris Allen with his strategically gelled hair and courtly manner. American Idol really, really wants a woman to win this season. At the beginning of Thursday's episode, they reminded us that a female singer hasn't won the show since 2007, when Jordin Sparks bested Blake Lewis for the top prize.
Let's put this into perspective: The last time a woman won, George W. Bush was still president, J.K. Rowling was still writing the Harry Potter series, and no one had any idea who Snooki was. Well, maybe a few people knew her.
After Ryan Seacrest all but begged us to vote for a female, we finally got to see the level of the women's talent.

Thirty-nine talented young singers stand on the precipice of superstardom. I watch American Idol for one thing and one thing only, and that's the sight of arrogant young men crying near Ryan Seacrest. I basically got a Trainspotting-sized injection of that sweet fix during Thursday night's solo round show, because there were tears, sniffles, anxieties, and sobs galore. Some were crocodile tears, as the astute barrister Nicki Minaj noted, but every salty drop was nonetheless a spectacle of drama king camp. Mmmmm. My absolute favorite.
The judges pared down the list of competing dudes to 28, and these five contestants were my five top selections of the evening. Grab your hanky, wave it in the air, and then cry into it, because this quintet is one weepy bunch of winners. Miss America-style.
5. Charlie Askew, "Somebody That I Used to Know"
First of all, I'm pretty sure that "Charlie Askew" is the cabaret name of Fran Lebowitz, because I'm getting major Public Speaking vibes from this child.

After Wednesday's group rounds, which decimated the field of Idol wannabes, the boys last night had one more chance to sing for their suppers and prove that they are live-show ready. While all the judges (except Nicki) slept through the proceedings, a few people did well, but no incredible standouts emerged.
In fact, the most interesting thing to happen last night was more of a subtle shift for Idol, which eliminated many of the contestants with interesting or tragic backstories. Those set adrift by the panel of judges last night...

Curtis Finch Jr., for example, performed a version of Christina Perri's "Jar Of Hearts" that was arguably the strongest of the evening. It may be the season's most overdone song, yet Finch successfully infused it with a rising gospel vibe. Like every reality show, the contestants learned valuable life lessons as they fought to stay in the game. Here are five: 1. Never Let Them See...

It's the final round of Hollywood Week for the men of "American Idol" -- solo day. Who's going to choke and who's going to come through in the clutch?
As the intro about the song list and the band roll, my husband goes, "I just thought about the best name for the 'Idol' band -- 'Idol Hands'" and then he laughed really hard. *sigh*
Up first is Paul Jolley, who is having some serious nerves. He is also wearing a lot of white and makes an interesting song choice -- "Blown Away," by Carrie Underwood. Huh. It's a little Broadway for our taste. Nicki Minaj is sporting an enormous wig, hat and sunglasses. Is she hungover?
Lazaro Arbos does "The Edge of Glory." So apparently Gaga is universal, 'cause he sounded like he knew that one. Curtis Finch does "Jar of Hearts" and he sounds good, but he too is a bit theatrical with it.

It's been a long and sometimes tear-filled journey for the men of American Idol. They've survived auditions, sudden death eliminations, Group Rounds, and tonight they'll sing their final solo number for the judges.
Who will be left standing? Let's find out now...
Cuts will be made after every 8th performance.
Leading off the solo round is Paul Jolley who's quite nervous. So nervous he nearly cries before he can even sing and Mariah has to remind him to breathe. He's not able to overcome his nerves and Nicki calls his lack of confidence a "turn off" and unprofessional.
Lazaro Arbos is the second to sing and chooses Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory." Curtis Finch, Jr., sings "Jar of Hearts" and his theatrics distract from what could be an otherwise interesting arrangement of the number.
From the first group, Lazaro, Paul, and Curtis all move on. We might only be...

If God is an American Idol fan — and that’s a big “if,” considering where Jennifer Hudson, Ricky Braddy and Pia Toscano have finished over the years — then perhaps Nicki Minaj is the insane, mumbly-mouthed angel sent (ejected?) from above, here to drop harsh truths and a wacky kind of honesty that have been missing from the show for far too long.
Certainly, Nicki’s anti-sob story, pro-weirdness, “give us one minute of professionalism” stance injected much-needed energy into Night 2 of Season 12′s gender-segregated Hollywood Week, following a Wednesday night telecast that all too often blared like a giant neon sign proclaiming,...

Idol heads to Hollywood, where finally the attention shifts from the fireworks between judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey to the contestants competing to be the next American Idol. All the contestants collected from across the country, from the streets of New York City to the open roads of Oklahoma, are gathered in Hollywood hoping to make it far enough to sing on live television.
This year, Idol is shaking things up by dividing Hollywood Week by gender, and the boys get to go first. The first round is a solo a cappella,...

The stakes were high as American Idol contestants converged on Hollywood to see if they have what it takes to be the next winner, as Ryan promised this judging panel would be one of the toughest we've ever seen.
They'll whittle down and weed out those who don't make the grade and at the end. Who'll be left standing? Let's find out now...
In addition to shaking up the judging panel this year, American Idol producers have also shaken up the competition. Instead of bringing all the contestants to Hollywood at the same time, they've opted to separate this round.
That's right--the first edition of Hollywood week is guys only. No girls allowed. (Except Nicki and Mariah, of course.)
The first round of Hollywood Week is the sudden death a capella round. In addition to impressing the judges, their families are in the balcony watching. The pressure is high as they take the stage.
