In 2004, The Indian Ocean tsunami hit parts of Southeast Asia, claiming more than 227,898 lives and devastating countless families who were torn apart due to the environmental disaster. The story of María Belón, who was among several who experienced and survived the tsunami in Khao Lak, Thailand serves as the inspiration for Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona's disaster drama, "The Impossible." Belón herself was involved with the screenwriting process of the film to ensure the authenticity of the events, and apart from a few alterations made for dramatic effect, "The Impossible" captures the harrowing perspective of disaster survivors who often have to contend with the helpless despair of being separated from their loved ones.

Who doesn't love Paddington, the cuddly bear who emigrated from darkest Peru all the way to the bustling streets of London in search of a new home and an adoring family to take him in? Based on the immensely popular children's books by the late author Michael Bond, with the main character voiced to perfection by actor Ben Whishaw, "Paddington" becoming a live-action franchise was just about the biggest no-brainer of a decision any studio ever had to make. It paid off big time when the 2014 movie released to overwhelmingly positive reviews and led to a sequel three years later that inspired even more rapturous reactions -- one that inspired many a seasoned movie-watching veteran to throw around the M-word (masterpiece!) with complete and utter sincerity. Everyone, even the most stubborn and cold-hearted grump, comes around on Paddington eventually!

With all that is going on — and has been going on in the last few years, it's somewhat reassuring that Paddington will be back on our screens next year. Even if Paul King isn't directing (he's still involved as a producer), the return of the diminutive, kindhearted bear is something to look forward to. And now we know he'll be back on UK screens next year.

Easily one of the best movies of its kind, J.A. Bayona’s minute-by-minute tale of survival poses an immediate challenge to audiences: could I survive that? The genuinely terrifying true story of one family lost in the middle of a devastating disaster is even more relevant now, with similar disasters seemingly happening daily. The near-flawless direction concentrates on the direct experience of a mother and son, who in just a couple of days learn the meaning of human concern and kindness. It’s a Spanish production (in English); Naomi Watts received an Oscar nomination and Ewan McGregor and young Tom Holland give strong performances. We reach back ten years for this review.

There is a new pair of unlikely celebrity friends — Little Women Oscar nominee Florence Pugh and Paddington Bear!
Pugh, 24, made a batch of homemade marmalade Monday and documented the process on her Instagram story, and the fictional bear, known for his love of marmalade sandwiches, soon took notice on Twitter.
“If I had made 8 jars of marmalade last night I’d have one for each day of the week and a spare to share with a friend,” the Paddington account wrote, also tagging Pugh.
The British actress quickly responded, “Paddington, do you want to make sandwiches with me? You can have a spare jar btw.

It’s rare for a sequel to outshine its predecessor, but Paddington 2 succeeds admirably. The loveable bear with the blue duffel coat and red hat returns to the big screen in a funny, charming, and occasionally emotional adventure that gives audiences more of what they loved in the first installment…and then some. 2018 has begun well.
Paddington 2 opens with a brief prologue showing baby Paddington rescued by his bear Uncle Pastuzo (Michael Gambon) and bear Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton), who permanently postpone a visit to London to take care of him. Jump ahead a couple of decades and Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) is now a permanent resident of Windsor Gardens in London with his adopted family, the Browns (Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin – all returning from the 2014 original). We’re just a few weeks into 2018, but a very early candidate for Most Charming Film has arrived. Paddington 2 is a genuine delight, a sequel that improves upon its (very good) predecessor. It is also the rare family film that has appeal for everyone in the family. As with 2014’s Paddington, director Paul King has zeroed in on the inherent magic of Michael Bond’s classic stories while incorporating scores of Wes Anderson-esque sight gags. Plus, there is a game cast of British heavyweights — Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Broadbent, and, this time around, a superb Hugh Grant — and gorgeous London locations. Most of all, there is the titular bear himself, a wondrous CGI creation sweetly voiced by Ben Whishaw. It is not hyperbolic to call Paddington one of the most adorably life-like computer-animated characters in cinema. He is the anti-Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, an anthropomorphic triumph whose interactions with humans are always believable.

While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s hundredth birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief…"

Isn’t it amazing how expectations can change so quickly and colossally? Back when Paddington was scheduled to hit cinemas in 2014, it was the subject of much concern for a great number of audiences. A CG/Live-Action adaptation of the beloved books by the late great Michael Bond, the film frighteningly had people expecting another Garfield: The Movie, Yogi Bear or The Smurfs. Pre-release the film was blitzed by cynicism and negativity, from rumours surrounding Colin Firth leaving the project, to the first photo of Paddington being deemed creepy and curiously inspiring an online trend of editing poor old Paddington into classic horror movies. Such a tidal wave of pessimism though was met with a wave breaker of charm, as Paddington shocked audiences by being not only good but a magical, masterful, family film with lots to say about acceptance, goodwill and finding a place you can call a home.

“Paddington 2 something to treasure rather than just to entertain,” writes Wendy Ide of The Guardian in her review of the sequel. And now Warner Bros. Pictures will usher in the new year with the big-screen return of one of the world’s most beloved characters in a delightful new adventure.
Following its overwhelmingly successful UK opening earlier this month and currently #1 at the UK box office, “Paddington 2”—fully financed by Studiocanal and produced by multi award-winning producer David Heyman (the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” films, “Paddington,” “Gravity”)—is set to debut in theatres across North America on January 12, 2018.
The Studio has acquired distribution rights for the film in the U.S. and Canada from Studiocanal and TWC/Dimension Films, it was jointly announced today by Studiocanal, Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

A new trailer has been released for Paddington 2 and it's wonderfully charming and fun. I enjoyed the first film that was released and this sequel, which stars Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson, looks like it will be just as good. If you haven't watched the first film, you should check it out! It might surprise you.

Re-injecting the “family film” genre with some wit, joy, and all-around delight, Paddington emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the last few years. Thanks to the success of the adorable bear-led feature, a sequel is now around the corner and ahead of a U.K. release later this year and a U.S. release in early 2018, the first teaser trailer has now arrived.
Featuring newcomers Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson, along with the returning Ben Whishaw, Imelda Staunton, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin, director Paul King has returned to direct. This time around, we follow our favorite bear as he attempts to purchase a present for his Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, but when it gets stolen, he goes to track down the thief.

Pack the finest marmalade sandwiches and prepare for another grand adventure – the legendary little bear is back in today’s first-look teaser for Paddington 2.
Heralding the return of writer-director Paul King – who crafted a heartfelt sleeper hit two years ago, when the original Paddington charmed its way to a global cume of $268 million – StudioCanal’s CG/live-action sequel opens at a time when Paddington Bear is considered a permanent member of the Brown family. But there’s trouble brewing in Windsor Gardens. While moseying around a London antique shop, our fuzzy, pint-sized protagonist happens across a unique pop-up book, one which he deems to be the perfect present for Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday.
So far, so Paddington. But when the book is stolen by a mystery thief, our kind-hearted lead is forced to scramble across the four corners of London. Skyfall and Spectre‘s Ben Whishaw is back in the voice booth,...

Principal photography for Studiocanal and David Heyman’s Paddington sequel is now underway for a November 10, 2017 UK release.
Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson have been confirmed for two leading roles in Studiocanal and Heyday Films’ Paddington 2, which started shooting yesterday.
Grant will play the Paddington sequel’s main villain, Phoenix Buchanan, a vain, charming acting legend whose star has fallen in recent years. Gleeson will play “Knuckles” McGinty, a notorious safe-cracker and legendary strongman who becomes an unexpected new ally for Paddington.
The anticipated sequel finds Paddington happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community. Worries about the look of the main character turned to smiles and a healthy run at the box office for one of last year’s most pleasant surprises. So it makes sense that, when starting to think about a second Paddington, the producers might want co-writer/director Paul King to return, and Deadline brings word that he is now aboard. King, who helped develop the story of the original with writer Hamish McColl, is going to be even more closely involved from the start for this one, working alongside regular collaborator Simon Farnaby to create the sequel’s narrative. We'd expect Farnaby, who showed up to memorable effect in Paddington, to also play some role this time.Little else is known about the film: we don’t know what our furry hero will be up to this time, but it’s a fair bet that his human family, including Hugh Bonneville’s Mr. Brown,...

When characters from children’s television shows are translated onto the silver screen sometimes the results aren’t exactly positive. Paddington is one of the movies where I would admit I was cynical and didn’t expect much, especially because of the age of the actual show. Then a little magical viral madness took over and the spectacle of the “Scary Paddington” took over and it was perfect to get the bear noticed, showing how awesome the internet can be. The fact is even without the crazy internet people, Paddington turned into something surprising and very charming.

When reviewing a movie intended for a younger audience, I try to put myself in the shoes of the film’s key demographic. With a movie like Paddington, I immediately found myself whisked away into the world of everyone’s favorite bear from deepest, darkest Peru. Watching the movie brought back my childhood memories of reading Michael Bond’s book series. I’m happy to report that the film captures the charm, whimsy, wit, and joy that ooze off the pages of the books.
Paddington opens up with a quick prologue explaining the discovery of Paddington’s Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo followed by how, and why, Paddington found his way inside London’s Paddington Station with a tag around his neck with a request to “please look after this bear” like a child evacuee from World War II. Chicago – It may prove hard to recall an era of talking creatures in live-action movies before the napalm hellfire of “Alvin and the Chipmunks” or “The Smurfs.” But, lest we forget, “Babe” has more Academy Awards than “The Master.” Arriving at the coy and wise time of the film year where expectations are either golden or underneath the barrel, talking bear Paddington arrives stateside as a well-behaved throwback to brighter days for a simple genre, with an efficient sense of humor and a few globs of vision, too.

Voiced with clear-eyed wonder by Ben Whishaw, cheery children’s book icon Paddington is a Peruvian bear with both a refined English vernacular and ravenousness for orange marmalade, attributes learned from British artifacts left by visiting explorer Montgomery Clyde. When Paddington’s home is destroyed in an earthquake, the young bear stows away to foggy London to meet the revered adventurer.

January films are often rather ghastly. Whether they be comedy, action, or otherwise, chances are you will have an unfortunate time in the theater when seeing a film in January, unless you are seeing the awards contenders from the previous year. Family films are also quite the crapshoot, with most of them being rather insufferable. Combine the two together, and you are headed for the disaster. So, when the swath of positive reviews of Paddington started to come out, I was a bit shocked. You have to be joking! But as it turns out, this story about a bear becoming part of a middle-class British family is exactly the movie I wanted to see. The bear I speak of is the titular Paddington (his "bear name" is a little too hard to pronounce), voiced by the charming Ben Whishaw. Decades earlier, his aunt (Imelda Staunton) and uncle (Michael Gambon) were...

Just what we need, another cute kids’ movie about a lovable, talking animal. Children can’t seem to get enough of these movies, despite how dreadfully awful they usually are, by most adults’ standards. Spy on parents some time while they treat their little ones to these chatty creature films and you’re likely to find most of them struggling to grin and bear the experience. Yeah. See what I did there?
Normally, you’d be hard pressed to find me caught anywhere near one of these movies. There are, of course, always those rare exceptions that lead you to eat that bitter N word… “never.” This is why I try and never say never about a film, unless its in the title. Paddington (2014) is a family-friendly film, and by that I mean its friendly for the entire family, children and adults. The film is based upon the beloved books by author Michael Bond,...

At first sight, Paddington Bear looks monstrous, his creepy photorealistic fur bringing to mind 2010’s astonishingly misconceived Yogi Bear. You can almost hear the soft, squelching sound as audience’s hearts sink, the sound of teeth gritting as they prepare for yet another sacrilegious plundering of a beloved children’s classic. What nightmares are we going to have to endure? Is Paddington Bear going to have an attitude? Is he going to wear a puffa jacket? Oh god.. he’s going to rap, isn’t he?
This consuming sense of dread isn’t director Paul King’s fault. It’s just that we’ve been burned so many times by overblown, gagless, soulless cinematic abortions that we expect the worst; to look into the eyes of a CG bear is to see a grinning studio exec staring back (probably doing some warped approximation of the hated “Dreamworks face”).

Paddington Bear's first night in a home with the Brown family is full of excitement -- perhaps a little too much excitement.
In this exclusive clip from "Paddington," the little Peruvian bear experiments with toothbrushes, tries mouthwash, and inadvertently floods the entire bathroom. This exclusive gives you a good idea of how great "Paddington" looks, with its fabulous mix of CG and live action; the wind ruffling Paddington's fur looks just as awesome as the Browns' cute London house.
Even though American audiences are usually suspicious of January releases, we can reassure you from firsthand experience that "Paddington" rocks. If you don't believe us, maybe you'll believe the millions of people who saw it since its opening in the UK in November. This marmalade-loving bear even beat out "The Hunger Games" at the UK box office, which is no small feat.

Hugh Bonneville celebrated his 51st birthday recently, but he hasn’t lost touch with the little boy he once was.
It explains why the British actor known the world over as the sensible Lord Grantham from TV’s "Downton Abbey" jumped at the chance to play the human father to a CGI bear in the family-friendly Paddington.
“Paddington the bear was very much a part of my childhood,” says Bonneville on the line from London, England. “The character emerged from the books of Michael Bond, first written in 1958, so they’ve been around a long time and as I say have formed part of the tapestry of my childhood.”
Blessed with a melodious voice that manages to sound both comforting and slightly stern, Bonneville began his career in theatre and then found success in British television where he’s appeared in more than 60 shows and small-screen films.

Paddington Bear goes from Peru to your local Odeon, with surprisingly strong results...
Now here's a family film that does an awful lot of things right. Based on Michael Bond's books, Paddington brings Peru's most famous bear to the screen, courtesy of a CG creation in the midst of a live action world.
Boasting the voice of Ben Whishaw (a relatively late replacement for Colin Firth), we're introduced to Paddington in an outstanding opening ten minutes, where his world is pretty much turned upside down. Through a series of events, and a tragedy, he ends up alone, at Paddington Station. Where nobody seems interested in him at all.
That is until the Brown family walk by. Hugh Bonneville's Mr Brown isn't much of an initial fan, but it's Samuel Joslin's Jonathan Brown who instantly warms to Paddington, and off they go to the London suburbs. It must...

Producer of Gravity and Harry Potter discusses why a 3D version of Paddington was not considered.
Paddington producer David Heyman has answered why the upcoming family film will not be available in 3D.
“We felt there was no added experiential value to having Paddington in 3D,” Heyman told an audience at a preview screening on Saturday. “We didn’t even discuss it.”
Heyman produced the Harry Potter series and Gravity, arguably one of the best 3D films of recent years.
