In The Wizard of Oz, the world goes from sepia to full color once Dorothy lands over the rainbow in the Land of Oz. In Robert Ellis’ new video for “Topo Chico,” it’s a glass of the beloved sparkling water that does the trick. Directed by Erica Silverman, the clip is a Texas dance-hall tribute to Ellis’ favorite beverage, full of bubbles, boogying, and popping bottles — with the singer holding strong in his signature Texas Piano Man white suit.

You know “Unwed Fathers” is great country songwriting from the title alone — an offhanded spin of a familiar phrase that reveals the presumptions, bias and bullshit hiding in our language in plain sight. Co-written with Country Music Hall of Famer Bobby “He Stopped Loving Her Today” Braddock, the story involves a young woman at an “Appalachian Greyhound station,” pregnant and leaving home, saying goodbye to her brother and heading off to an uncertain future, in a culture where unwed mothers are “kept under cover/like some bad dream/while unwed...

"We're not really an indie band anymore, now we're like a cult band." Abramorama has debuted an official trailer for a new rock documentary titled Straight Into a Storm, profiling the band known as Deer Tick, an American alternative rock band from Providence, Rhode Island. The film profiles their last 10 years and rise to fame, focusing around their 10th anniversary shows in 2014/2015, and including lots of old footage, too. "Our 10-year anniversary shows were a celebration for our fans and for us. It was a lot of work, but also a blast! William Miller was there every night to capture that spirit. We're proud and excited for his film to get an official release and proper distribution by partnering with Abramorama." This looks like another fun rock doc, profiling a band that has had its ups & downs, still continuing to rock on no matter what. Dive in. Here's the official...

There's a scene in the original 1976 Heartworn Highways that's become a central heartbeat of the cult film that chronicled Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Young, David Allan Coe and others as they lived, wrote music and filled their lungs with smoke and song in Nashville, Tennessee. Van Zandt is sitting in his wood-paneled kitchen in a denim shirt, plucking "Waiting Around to Die" on a cherry red guitar. “We turned down a million dollars to make a song for one of the Twilight movies,” says John McCauley, the front man for indie rockers Deer Tick. “Those movies are terrible,” mutters keyboardist Rob Crowell, lolling on a couch in a plush townhouse in Clinton Hill, a giant Sour Patch Kid–shaped neon light hanging on the wall behind him. On this late afternoon in December, McCauley and his bandmates are in New York to play a string of six consecutive sold-out shows at Brooklyn Bowl—a celebration of Deer Tick’s decade together. A documentary is being filmed to memorialize the milestone, and the following night, New Year’s Eve, they’ll be joined onstage by Stevie Nicks for a rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon.” It’s all evidence that even though Deer Tick has never quite made it big, they’ve done all right. Based on a cult favorite 2010 Mexican film of the same name, We Are What We Are is a brooding genre film from co-writer/director Jim Mickle about family traditions. For a vampirical family made of actors Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, and Julia Garner, their tradition happens to be cannibalism. When bones start trickling into a small town’s river supply, a cop (Michael Parks) begins investigating their placement, while continuing the search for his missing daughter.
Mickle has gained notoriety in the horror world for his past films, Mulberry Street and Stake Land. He is currently working on Cold in July with Michael C. Hall, described as a western, which also marks another screenwriting collaboration with actor Nick Damici. We Are What We Are screened at Sundance 2013, and also played at the “Director’s Fortnight” section this past year at the Cannes Film Festival.

Oceana, a small coal mining town in Wyoming County, West Virginia, is, on the surface, like any other small town in Appalachia. An hour away from almost any major city, and with an approximate population of 1,400, it’s small, close-knit and not necessarily very open to outsiders. But quietly simmering underneath the surface of this municipality, an insidious epidemic is growing; a scourge of OxyContin and prescription pills that has devastated the town and given it the unfortunate nickname of “Oxyana.” Directed by Sean Dunne (the helmer behind Emmy-nominated documentary short “The Archive” and the Insane Clown Posse Juggalos documentary “American Juggalo”), “Oxyana” is a gripping and sometimes hard-to-watch portrait of this struggling township under siege by a drug epidemic. Dispassionate in the best sense of the word, “Oxyana” is respectful to the point of being detached. Aside from some hauntingly broken down music by members of Deer Tick (which resembles the wailing.

Jonny Fritz is fresh off the heels of a landmark year. In 2012, the artist (known to many as Jonny Corndawg) shared the stage with everyone from the Alabama Shakes to Deer Tick and Dawes. Now, Fritz’s career has hit another milestone in his decision to sign with Ato Records. Sealing the deal in gravy (with a quill pen, to boot!), Fritz is set to release his Ato debut Dad Country on April 16. Featuring a meta-narrative, big laughs, a bit of blood and lot of sharp edged one liners, "Seven Psychopaths" lands in theaters this weekend, bringing with it a huge cast to play along in the surreal world crafted by Martin McDonagh. Also reaching for your attention will be a soundtrack that takes a couple of hipster favorites, some classic tunes, and a score from a talented composer and shakes 'em up into a smooth cocktail. Kicking off rather appropriately with Hank Williams' "Angel Of Death," the CD moves into the classic cut "First Cut Is The Deepest" before detouring in a few interesting directions. There's Carter Burwell's score, a couple of tunes from indie rockers The Walkmen, another from Deer Tick before things head back into FM dial territory with The Stone Poneys. It's a pretty eclectic mix, but it also works pretty well. And if you like what you hear,...

Nashville, Tenn. — When Dan Auerbach moved from Ohio to Music City, he found a local rock `n' roll scene populated with bands that not only like each other, but also work toward a greater good. The Black Keys guitarist sees it as an uncommon harmony.
"It's really pretty cool and it's very much its own thing," Auerbach said. "There doesn't seem to be too much ego involved, which is surprising. I remember there was that whole Detroit scene and it was just like ego city. The same thing is happening in Nashville, but you throw Southern hospitality in the mix."
That all-for-one attitude is stripping away Nashville's country music veneer to reveal the nation's hottest rock `n' roll scene. Think rock is dead? Not in middle Tennessee, where multiplatinum transplants like The Keys, Jack White and Kings of Leon have teamed with a vibrant menagerie of young homegrown bands like Jeff the Brotherhood,...

They’ve since found brethren in bands of a feather like Deer Tick and Dawes (with the lead singers of all three bands forming the supergroup Middle Brother) and enjoyed critical acclaim and a supportive fan base.

Everyone’s heard of The Inbetweeners. If you haven’t, then where have you been? Living in a cave for the past couple of years? Visiting the most desolate places in the world? Attempting to break the record for the longest a person has gone without watching T.V. or logging on to the internet? Becoming a hermit and not communicating with any form of the outside world?
For those of you out there who fit into these categories (and I congratulate you on finding this review considering you’ll be a bit out of date with modern technology), here’s a bit of background information about the television series that’s taken the country by storm.
The first ever episode was aired on 1st May, 2008 and it attracted 238,000 viewers. By the end of the first series, it averaged 459,000 viewers with 474,000 watching the final episode and...
