Actress Ally Maki has demonstrated her comedy chops on TV’s Hacks, 10 Things I Hate About You, Wrecked, and as the voice of “Giggle McDimples” in the Pixar film Toy Story 4. But lately, her work has taken a dramatic turn – in the serio-comic Apple TV+ show The Big Door Prize, and especially in her new film, Seagrass.
The feature, now playing in theaters in the U.S. and Canada, stars Maki as Judith, a Japanese Canadian woman whose sense of certainty about her life begins to crumble after the death of her mother. A fraying connection to her husband Steve (Luke Roberts), a handsome but emotionally constricted white guy, prompts the couple to head to a resort in British Columbia with their two young daughters – Stephanie (Nyha Breitkreuz) and Emmy (Remy Marthaller). While the kids keep busy with other children on the beach, Judith and Steve participate in group couples’ therapy,...

"Listen to me... ghosts don't exist, okay?" Game Theory Films has revealed an official trailer for an unique indie drama titled Seagrass, from filmmaker Meredith Hama-Brown making her feature directorial debut. This Canadian production originally premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and will open in both Canadian and US art house cinemas later this month. The film was the TIFF Fipresci prize winner, and a TIFF Top Ten pick. Set a decade or so in the past, Seagrass follows a Japanese-Canadian woman grappling with the death of her mother as she brings her family to a retreat. When her relationship with her husband begins to affect the children's emotional security, the family is forever changed. The film stars Ally Maki as Judith, Luke Roberts, Chris Pang, Sarah Gadon, Nyha Huang Breitkreuz, and Remy Marthaller. This film has some really strong, grainy cinematography in it - with some shots better than others.

Keanu Reeves has been at the forefront of some of cinema's most important franchises, including "The Matrix" and "John Wick." Even one of his biggest bombs has, against all odds, also become a franchise. Reeves starred in Universal's tremendously expensive blockbuster "47 Ronin" back in 2013. It was a major flop at the time and actually hurt the actor's career a bit. But nearly a full decade later, everything came full circle, and a sequel to that flop was released. Yes, was! As in, it already came out ... last year.
"Blade of the 47 Ronin" is a sequel to the movie in question, and debuted in 2022. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, as it wasn't quite as big as the original, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, Reeves didn't return for the follow-up, but for those who enjoyed that film, there is a sequel out there you can watch right now.

Everything you need to know about Judith (Ally Maki) and Steve’s (Luke Roberts) marriage arrives during their first “share” at the summer retreat where they’ve brought their daughters (Nyha Huang Breitkreuz’s Stephanie and Remy Marthaller’s Emmy) to play while repairing whatever has broken between them. After Steve passes the buck by saying she wanted them to come, Judith attempts to honestly organize her thoughts around her mother’s recent passing. Before she can finish, however, he forcefully interjects: “Five months ago.
What a simple yet telling interaction––one writer-director Meredith Hama-Brown must be intimately familiar with to so poignantly and effortlessly depict. Is that not recent enough? She brings along her childhood friend Lolo (Cola) as her translator, as Audrey was adopted by white parents. They’re joined by Deadeye (Wu), Lolo cousin. “Are you horny?” asks Lolo (Sherry Cola) in the second red-band trailer for “Joy Ride,” which Lionsgate released on Thursday, before proceeding to talk about d–ks and how much she loves the sounds of sex.
In the raunchy comedy, which is directed by “Crazy Rich Asians” co-screenwriter Adele Lim, stars Ashley Park of “Beef” as Audrey, whose visit to China to find her birth mother becomes a crazy, drug- and alcohol-fueled road trip with her friends.
Audrey’s efforts to impress Chinese men fail when she admits, “I’m just a garbage American who only speaks English. And a little Gollum,” as she launches into the “Lord of the Rings” character’s “my precious” speech.

"Let's just be adults!" Lionsgate has dropped in another brand new raunchy red band trailer for the summer comedy Joy Ride, opening in theaters everywhere in early July. This earned rave reviews at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. From the producers of Neighbors, and the co-screenwriter from Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon, Joy Ride stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu. The film follows four Asian-American women as they bond and discover the truth of what it means to know and love who you are, while they travel through Asia in search of one of their birth mothers. The cast also includes Ronny Chieng, Desmond Chiam, Alexander Hodge, and Chris Pang. This looks as all out ridiculous and depraved and hilarious as it should! Don't miss the comedy everyone is saying is the funniest of the year so far.

When Audrey’s (Ashley Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Sherry Cola), her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Stephanie Hsu), her college friend turned Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin.

Amidst all the hullabaloo about Showtime merging with Paramount+ and the continuing revival of older shows that nobody asked to be revived, you would be forgiven for missing that the Epix streaming platform formally rebranded as MGM+ on January 15, 2023. Cue the Gif of Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Honsou) in "Guardians of the Galaxy" saying, "Who?"
Epix, for those not familiar, launched in the late 2000s and housed shows such as the Forest Whitaker-led crime drama "Godfather of Harlem" and the Stephen King adaptation "Chapelwaite" prior to its rebranding being announced in the wake of Amazon's 8.5 billion acquisition of MGM's vast collection of films and TV shows. Epix was also the original home of the since-canceled DC comic book TV series "Pennyworth," which moved to HBO Max for its third season under the gloriously cumbersome new title, "Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler." Who would have thought we would be seeing a sequel to 47 Ronin among all of the Halloween goodies? And they said there’s no such thing as The Great Pumpkin.
Somewhere in Budapest Yurei kills Arai thought to be the last in the bloodline of those who wielded the Blade of the 47 Ronin. But as he kills him he senses the existence of another heir.

Here’s a sequel I’m willing to bet you forgot was coming, because I certainly did. It was announced over two years ago that Universal Pictures was developing a sequel to 47 Ronin, the 2013 action/fantasy movie that starred Keanu Reeves as a half-Japanese, half-English outcast who joins forces with a group of ronin out to avenge the death of their master. The film was one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year, which made the announcement of a sequel all the more puzzling, but here we are. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment have released an extended clip from Blade of the 47 Ronin, which you can check out above.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Amazon Prime Video, for this edition we look at how “As We See It” casting director Cami Patton found untapped talent pools of neurodiverse actors to breathe life into the show’s main cast.
A cast-contingent series — a TV pilot that will only be ordered to series if the lead casting is approved — requires that the show’s casting director not only find the right people to fill roles, but find people who inspire a sense that the show, as a whole, is going to work. On “As We See It”, Jason Katims’ observational comedy about a group of young adults on the autism spectrum living together, this meant casting neurodiverse actors who could inspire that series-wide confidence. With “As We See It,” creator Jason Katims has clear objectives: to let people on the autism spectrum be at the centers of their own stories, and to tell those stories with the kind of care they’re otherwise rarely afforded on TV. Whereas a comedy like Josh Thomas’ “Everything’s Going to Be Okay” — which also gave people with autism the spotlight — largely focused on the intersection between the absurd and sublime, . It’s a lot to ask of a show to handle all the above with both sensitivity and a clear eye for narrative, but Katims and company continually find a way to thread this particularly tricky needle.
The new eight-episode series, out today on Amazon Prime Video, focuses on a trio of roommates on the autism spectrum. Programmer Jack (Rick Glassman), sweetheart Harrison (Albert Rutecki), and frustrated Violet (Sue Ann Pien) are all doing their best, with...

Production wraps this week in Hungary on “Blade of the 47 Ronin,” a sequel to Universal’s 2013 Japanese-themed action classic “47 Ronin.” The new movie represents a substantial revamp that emphasizes Asian fantasy heroes and female characters and addresses some of the cultural criticisms of the previous Keanu Reeves-starring picture.
The action is moved forward by some 300 years to present-day Budapest, which is intended as a metaphor for East-West confluence, and where a meeting of the five Samurai clans is taking place. In addition to the male clan leaders, the meeting is also attended by three Onna Bugeisha (literally ‘Women Warriors’), though their presence is initially resented.
Production was handled by Universal Studios through its 1440 Productions unit for Netflix. The streamer is expected to release it sometime in 2022, though a specific date is still unknown.
The existence of female Samurai who fought alongside their male colleagues in feudal Japan is well documented.
