HBO Max and Warner Bros. are looking to build a Sherlock Holmes film-tv universe in the mold of the TV series offshoots of Suicide Squad and The Batman on the WarnerMedia streamer.
We hear that two potential spinoff series from the Warner Bros. movie franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are in early development at HBO Max. Executive produced by Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey, each of the proposed series would focus on a different character.
Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Team Downey’s Amanda Burrell are exec producing alongside Wigram Productions’ Lionel Wigram, who produced the two Sherlock Holmes films.
Unlike the Suicide Squad offshoot series Peacemaker and The Batman’s Penguin, which are built around existing characters, we hear the Sherlock Holmes spinoffs would revolve around characters that have not been introduced yet.

Entertainment runs in the blood of writer/director Duncan Jones; not only is he the son of Rock legend David Bowie, he burst into Hollywood via the Sundance Film festival with his first ever feature film, Moon. Now several years and two movies later Jones is bringing his passion project to life with the help of Netflix. Mute is a sci-fi noir thriller set in Berlin that stars Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux and Dominic Monaghan. Jones and co-writer Michael Robert Johnson have been working on this high-tech futuristic take on noir since the early 2000s, even before Jones wrote his first movie Moon, and it has gone through quite the evolution.
Recently I got to sit down with Jones and talk about all things Mute related and beyond.

Duncan Jones' 15-year passion project, Netflix's sci-fi noir thriller Mute feels like it could perfectly fit into the Black Mirror universe, but it wasn't originally conceived that way. I recently sat down and talked to the director about the film and he explained that when he and co-writer Michael Robert Johnson first started writing what was supposed to be Jones' first film it was set in modern times.
The project was shelved when Jones and actor Sam Rockwell decided to do what turned out to be Jones' very first film Moon. Then in the years that followed, Jones did two studio films, Source Code followed by Warcraft only to return to his original project to find it slightly dated.
"We wrote it around the same time that Sexy Beast came out and Layer Cake and these kind of a new wave of British gangster films that were coming out.

For about as long as Duncan Jones has been making movies, he’s been talking about trying to get Mute made. This weekend, at long last, Jones will see his passion project revealed to the public, as the film is about to stream on Netflix. There was an embargo in place until today, so I can now chime in and say this is Jones at his weirdest. That’s a good thing too, as he’s mixing the world he created with Moon, the aesthetics of Blade Runner, and a number of other influences into something you won’t easily forget. Jones clearly loves science fiction, and it shows here. The film is a sci-fi mystery, taking place within the universe first explored in Moon. Here, Berlin is the setting. It’s on the harder side to describe this one, but I’ll let IMDb (with a slight tinker by...

Moon and Warcraft director Duncan Jones returns to sci-fi with Mute. Here's our review of a left-field, downbeat thriller...
Great science fiction is more than just window dressing - it's metaphorical. In Blade Runner, the future Los Angeles of lost souls and runaway replicants was intrinsic to its themes of memory and mortality. Likewise the spare, cold lunar base in Moon, director Duncan Jones' superb debut: it underpinned the story's sense of loneliness and isolation.
Mute, Jones' first film since his 2016 videogame adaptation, Warcraft, takes in touches of Blade Runner's noir thriller atmosphere and Moon's quirky characters and poignant otherness. The result, however, is a genre piece that doesn't hang together as well as either of those films.
Alexander Skarsgard stars as Leo, a 30-something bartender working in a near-future Berlin. Among a high-tech cultural melting pot, Leo stands apart from everyone else: a childhood accident robbed him of the ability to speak,...

Duncan Jones’ fourth feature, the long gestating twinkle in his eye/ pseudo Moon sequel Mute, is finally set to make its Netflix debut on Friday 23rd February. This British/German sci-fi production, filmed in Berlin, has been a passion project of Jones’ for some time and one that has careered from pipedream to planned and temporarily postponed. But when potent concepts flower within the minds of passionate artists they have a tendency to materialise in some form or another; whatever the cost. In Mute’s case, due to the evolution of online streaming triggering an industry metamorphosis, the film will mostly bypass cinemas* and arrive in the homes of Netflix subscribers on Friday 23rd February. What is known of the narrative is not much beyond a log-line with morsels extracted from myriad sources to form a patchwork understanding of what the story might be.

Going to the local cinema to see the latest movie has almost become a thing of the past. Some of the population would prefer staying at home with their big screen TV, even if it means waiting a few months to watch a popular movie, instead of dealing with people talking through a film or on their cell phone.
More filmmakers are turning to other forms of distribution to release their movies, with their stories no longer made for just the big screen. Netflix has become one of those outlets and it’s being accomplished with successful results.
Director Dee Rees’ (Pariah) Oscar nominated Mudbound, Suicide Squad director David Ayer’s Bright, and this week’s big surprise – J.J. Abrams Cloverfield Paradox, are a few examples of films finding an audience through the popular streaming format.

Eagerly awaited by many, very much including ourselves, is director Duncan Jones’ return to the world of science fiction. Mute is his ‘spiritual sequel’ to Moon, and it’s premiering on Netflix from February 23rd. We now have an official synopsis and the first trailer, too.
The synopsis reads:
Berlin, the future, but close enough to feel familiar: In this loud, often brutal city, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) – unable to speak from a childhood accident – searches for his missing girlfriend, the love of his life, his salvation, through dark streets, frenzied plazas, and the full spectrum of the cities shadow-dwellers. As he seeks answers, Leo finds himself mixed up with Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), a pair of irreverent Us army surgeons on a mission all their own.

Jones has been wanting to make this project a reality since 2003, when he first wrote the screenplay. He also revealed on Twitter that he wanted Sam Rockwell to be involved but Rockwell wanted to play the role of Leo, who is played by Alexander Skarsgård. So he went on to make Moon as a vehicle for Rockwell.

Here’s your first look at the highly-anticipated futuristic film Mute, from visionary filmmaker Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and featuring Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux and newcomer Seyneb Saleh.
Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wisecracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.
The Netflix original film is directed by Duncan Jones and written by Jones and Michael Robert Johnson. Stuart Fenegan serves as producer and Charles J.

With 2009's Moon and 2011's Source Code, director Duncan Jones gave us two refreshingly clever and original sci-fi thrillers, winning the admiration of audiences and critics alike. It's not understatement, then, to say how surprising it was when Jones signed on to direct the movie adaptation of blockbuster video game, Warcraft. Whatever you thought about that movie, Jones' talent for brainy, entertaining science fiction is undeniable - lucky for us, he's returning to the genre with Mute, a new original film for Netflix. The movie, having commenced principal photography this week in Berlin, packs a hefty cast, with Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux starring. It will follow Leo (Skarsgård), a mute man searching for a missing person in the year 2052 in Berlin while dueling with two rogue villains played by Rudd and Theroux. Jones started developing the story twelve years ago and co-wrote the script with Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes,...

Duncan Jones has been working on Mute for 12 years, and now its release is just about 12 months away (maybe less than!). It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for Mute — for me, ever since I raced to Google Jones’ in-the-works projects immediately after seeing his incredible feature directorial debut, Moon, at my hometown’s indie theater in 2009. In the interim, Jones released time loop movie Source Code and this year’s Warcraft, but Mute has been waiting on the back burner all the while. Now Mute has a Netflix release and an ambitious schedule: the streaming platform announced today that it’s distributing the film with a 2017 release date, and production in Berlin starts today. It’ll likely get a limited theatrical release simultaneous to hitting the streaming platform, similar to last year’s Beasts of No Nation. This news comes after Alexander Skarsgård spilled on the Netflix deal late last month.

Mute has been a longtime passion project for Duncan Jones. The director wanted to make the Berlin-set sci-fi film, which he co-wrote with Michael Robert Johnson, his directorial debut, but it got put on hold for Moon. Still struggling to get Mute financed, Jones then made Source Code his sophomore effort. Then he went on to direct Warcraft. But before his video game adaptation opened in […]

Chicago – With regards to its production, Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Pompeii” is a period film based on current trends, honoring both the apocalypse fascination spurred by the Mayans’ recent miscalculation, and the ascent of Harrington’s star power via the popular TV series “Game of Thrones.” With neither guaranteeing a strong future for themselves through Pompeii, there is at least some bankability in Harrington’s abs.

Director: Paul Ws Anderson; Screenwriters: Janet Scott Batchler, Lee Batchler, Michael Robert Johnson; Starring: Kit Harington, Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland; Running time: 104 mins; Certificate: 12A
With Pompeii, director Paul Ws Anderson has essentially served up cheese on toast. Kiefer Sutherland oozes like fondue in his role as Roman general Corvus, who threatens to spoil the burgeoning romance between Milo, a sweaty young slave (Games of Thrones's Kit Harington), and the dewy-eyed daughter of Pompeii's ruling clan Cassia (Emily Browning). Is that the rumble of sexual hunger we can hear?
Er, no. It's a massive great mountain about to blow. And with this being a kind of sword 'n' sandals pantomime, you may be tempted to call out: 'It's behind you...'
But before the real action starts, Anderson (Resident Evil) exploits every opportunity to get Harington half-naked and rolling around the local sandpit...

During "The Noteworthy"'s three weeks on hiatus, a triptych of essential pieces by David Bordwell have appeared on his blog. One is a piece on the bridging of theory and practice in the cultural writings of Noël Carroll and others. The other two focus on the emergence of a new type of film criticism in the mid-20th century, signaled in particular by the great James Agee, Manny Farber, and Parker Tyler. Firstly, in what is already a sequel-article of sorts, Bordwell contextualizes the critical scene of the 1940s. Secondly, he hones in closer on Agee and his work:
"It’s terribly easy to be sentimental about Agee, and almost as easy to be hard on him. (Brutality, as Stroheim and Griffith knew, has its sentimental side.) But I think that reading him can do something rare in film criticism: He calls you to your best instincts. His dithering can be frustrating,...

Chicago – For a film in which everyone knows the ending walking in, “Pompeii” creates a decent good-versus-evil precursor to the volcanic big bang, and enough sword and sandals style fight sequences to provide some action. It all comes down to an active volcano, in modern digital design and 3D.

Although the screenplay is stiff and old fashion, there is something reliable about Kiefer Sutherland playing a Roman senator villain in 79 A.D., and it always seems like he’s having fun while he snarls. The story unwinds as a revenge scenario, as Sutherland’s character slaughtered an entire town as a military officer, and Milo the Celt – who later became a slave – saw it all as a child, including his parent’s demise. The pre-volcanic activities includes a comely Pompeii maiden, and it becomes a Roman holiday for all, at least before the big bang. The special effects are smashing,...

Take the plot of Gladiator, set it at the foot of an active volcano, strip away any attempt at character building and you have Pompeii as director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Death Race) delivers upon expectations. There are no surprises here, nor should we expect any from the man that brought us The Three Musketeers. Not only is Pompeii bad, it's so bad I can't help but wonder how serious anyone in front of and behind the camera must have taken it. After raiding every sword and sandal prop closet in Hollywood, Anderson assembled his cast on a green screen and pummeled them with foam rubber rocks, leaving not a trace of artistic integrity amid the rubble. How screenwriters Michael Robert Johnson and Janet Scott and Lee Batchler can consider this an original script is beyond me. "Set Gladiator aboard the Titanic" must have been the call from above...

Yes, this one again includes "A Hero Will Rise" as Part of it's tagline, which Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" did. Score for originality, right? This is the fifth poster for the Paul W.S. Anderson film starring Kit Harington, Kiefer Sutherland, Emily Brownin, Jessica Lucas, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pingue. Frankly, I'm not invested much in the film as it comes from the very same helmer who spewed out those horrible "Resident Evil" films, and "The Three Musketeers" which would likely make Alexandre Dumas roll over in his grave. "Pompeii" hits theaters on February 21st, 2014 and scripted by Lee Scott Batchler, Janet Scott Batchler and Michael Robert Johnson. In a scene reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s classic epic, the first clip from Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii has been released, giving us a look at leading man Kit Harington fighting for his life as a gladiator in the arena.
Sony launched the latest promo for the upcoming blockbuster at the Super Bowl, and with its release inching ever closer, this first clip has landed over on Yahoo Movies.
Set in 79 A.D., Pompeii tells the epic story of Milo (Kit Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia (Emily Browning), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant who has been unwillingly betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts in a torrent of blazing lava, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him.

Agbaje is in a cast that also includes Kit Harington, Kiefer Sutherland and Emily Browning, in a tale written by Michael Robert Johnson, which is set in the days leading up to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79, and tells the tale of an enslaved gladiator (played by Harington) who faces the tyrant (Sutherland) who, years before, murdered his family, and now threatens to steal his lover, Flavia (Browning). There will be plenty of Hollywood studios competiting during the commercial breaks in tomorrow’s big game: Paramount’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, DreamWorks’ Need For Speed and Marvel’s Captain America: Winter Soldier are just a few of the action titles expected to be promoted. Pic hits theaters on February 21st, 2014. I'm not a big fan of the director whose only claim to fame are the "Resident Evil" films, which are absolutely appalling. In addition to trying to save said noblewoman during the disaster, the event puts the gladiator face-to-face with the man who slaughtered his family years ago. Paul W.S. Anderson's next film, a historical/action/disaster movie, based on the real life events in Pompeii has picked up a distributor in FilmDistrict and now has an official release date set. Come inside for all the details and casting info.
Paul W.S. Anderson is an interesting director in that he creates some seriously cheesy and schlocky films (on a similar magnitude of Uwe Boll), but somehow they always manage to make quite a bit of money. I don't know how he does it, but somehow he pulls it all together (often with a fairly reasonable cast too). While I can't say I go into any of his films with particularly high expectations, Pompeii is one I'm keeping an eye on.
For one, the cast he's assembled so far (including Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland, and Carrie-Ann Moss) is pretty decent. Secondly, I'm a sucker for disaster type films,...
