It may be 30 years late, but audiences will finally get a chance to purchase the soundtrack to one of the most influential films of the ’80s, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” It’s almost impossible to imagine that a film with so many classic musical moments never had an official soundtrack, but it’s true. Now, decades […]

American Idol was announced to be coming to an end after 15 seasons yesterday (May 12), but did you know that Ryan Seacrest used to have a co-host?
Brian Dunkleman hosted the Fox competition's first season alongside Ryan Seacrest, before the latter took sole control. History has not been kind to poor old Brian since, with Fox TV CEO Dana Walden joking about a possible reunion for the pair.
"Where is Brian Dunkleman? If you give me his number, I will call and invite him," she joked, though Dunkleman gave as good as he got last night:
I knew American Idol would never last without me #Cancelled

To honour Dunkleman, we have collected a few hosts of massive shows that you may have cruelly forgotten, starting with the man himself.

What's old is new again, but did The English Beat ever go out of style? Shout! Factory is releasing the popular '80s Brit band's entire catalog (plus previously unreleased nuggets) in a new box set, The Complete Beat, out July 10, and co-founding member Dave Wakeling took time to talk to me about the timeless sound of the band, why they broke up, his jealousy over the success of Fine Young Cannibals, and the ultimate fan concert he hopes to stage.
"The Beat finished when it was meant to. We promised each other that if it ever became incredibly hard work, or we felt like we were going through the motions, or we felt we were doing anything that we didn't want to do, [that would be it]," Wakeling, now 56, said before a recent live gig in Aspen, Co. "Sad as it was, the right thing happened, and I'm pleased because now 30 years later we only made three lps, but they're...

Chicago — The plan for a weekend of Lollapalooza shuffle firmly established, Saturday's musical Pu-Pu platter was a bit more focused on rock and its various offshoots, plus, frankly, bands I either love already or was just curious about.
First on the list was hip-hop's current go-to hook queen, Skylar Grey. In her first major appearance since blowing up thanks to her vocals on Dr Dre's "I Need a Doctor," singer/songwriter Grey is clearly read to go out on her own. (She would join pal Eminem later in the night during his headlining set.)
Check out photos from the festival!
With a haunting, gothy vibe, Grey came out wearing a ragged white hoodie that hung in shreds like a ghost shawl down to her ankles, accented by combat boots, army pants and a white sports bra that showed off her impossibly thin belly. She was all aggression and angst, at one point neck-tackling her guitarist.

Tonight, Discovery seems to be airing a non-Shark Week themed show since "One Man Army" is airing at its usual time. I've checked the episode description and nowhere does it mention Anything about sharks so that's frustrating and confusing. They've managed to make episodes of "Mythbusters" and "Dirty Jobs" that were Shark Week themed so I don't know why they can't just do that for all shows that air during Shark Week. And since the same company owns TLC and Discovery channel maybe they could send a few sharks over to "Toddlers and Tiaras" to get these parents to have a little perspective. "What's that? Your little girl doesn't like it when you bleach her hair because it burns? That's a shame. We've got someone to help you deal with those feelings. Actually, several someones. Or somethings. We call the big one Bitey." Here's your Wednesday night TV:

It's the best and worst moment of every U.S. festivalgoer's life: schedule day. On the one hand, you can't wait to see when your favorite bands are playing and then start planning your long weekend. On the other, you dread the sight of two of your absolute faves playing on opposite sides of the mile-long field at Exactly The Same Time!
In which case Tuesday (June 7) morning was either a huge relief or a major bummer if you're planning on trekking to Chicago on August 5 for Lollapalooza. First, the good news: With the exception of a few headliner conflicts, the schedule is actually one of the most fan-friendly rundown in years.
Yes, Muse and Coldplay are playing at the same time on Friday night, which will probably cause major headaches for thousands of fans of falsetto-driven, pomp and circumstance English rock. (To say nothing of the fact that party...

Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, My Morning Jacket and deadmau5 top the Lolla 2011 lineup, which was revealed early Tuesday morning (April 26). Joining them is an appropriately eclectic mix of talent, including A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Nas, the Cars and Ween.

By Terry Keefe This past Thursday, I had a concert experience that I never expected was even possible, when Big Audio Dynamite reformed to play a pre-Coachella show at the tiny Roxy Theater on Sunset Blvd. B.A.D. were the first post-Clash project of Mick Jones, and their influences can be seen everywhere in the last few decades of popular music. Gregory Weinkauf's show review at the Huffington Post says it better than I can, with some great pics.
They were ahead of their time in other ways. One of the biggest sing-a-long moments of the night came during the mid-80s dance hall smash "The Bottom Line":
A dance to the tune of economic declineIs when you do the bottom line
(Those lines always struck me as fun irony, back when the song was released.

Mick Jones has said that Big Audio Dynamite's lyrics are still relevant today. The band reformed this year for a full UK tour and a performance at the Coachella Arts and Music Festival. Jones later teased the possibility of new material. Of the continued relevance of Bad's material, Jones told BBC 6 Music: "We were singing about things like apartheid and we talk about Reagan, but Reagan's the same as Bush. "The same people, they come again. It's not like we're prophetic or anything, but a lot of it is relevant today, surprisingly enough." Of the return to the live stage, he added: "It was pretty amazing (more)...

We're going to try and recreate some of the old feelings and look for some new ones." Talking about the band's comeback he added: "I've never done the reformation thing before, ever, so this is going to be a first for me as well (more)...

Actress Patsy Kensit has credited her turn on British reality show Strictly Come Dancing with helping to heal the heartache of her fourth marriage breakdown.
The Lethal Weapon 2 star split from her fourth husband, DJ Jeremy Healy, in April and has previously admitted the break-up hit her hard, revealing she ballooned in weight after gorging on junk food.
She accepted an offer to appear on the U.K. dancing show over the summer, and she's convinced the intense training is just what she needed to take her mind off her "rough" marriage separation.
Kensit tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I was glad to be asked this year. This whole Strictly experience has been such an amazing diversion from my life. I would advise anyone to try it.
"If you've had a rough time, go to a dance class because it does lift your spirits. It's turned out to be just what I needed."
Kensit was previously wed to Big Audio Dynamite keyboardist Dan Donovan, Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr, and Oasis star Liam Gallagher.

In our latest Music in the movies column, we celebrate the work of Elmer Bernstein, the composer of classic themes for film such as The Great Escape and Ghostbusters...
An immensely talented musician at an early age, Elmer Bernstein was taken under the wing of composer Aaron Copland and found himself enrolled at the prestigious Juilliard School. Looking set to have a successful career as a concert pianist, his plans were put on hold when he was assigned to the entertainments unit of the Us Air Force in World War II, where he arranged material and composed original material for broadcasts.
It's this newfound talent that lead to his post-war employment as a composer for national radio, and ultimately paved the way for his career as one of the all time great composers.
Bernstein passed away six years ago, leaving behind an incredible body of work spanning over fifty years.

Actress Patsy Kensit felt so depressed after the collapse of her fourth marriage she struggled to get out of bed - and ballooned in weight as she gorged on doughnuts.
The Lethal Weapon 2 star split from DJ Jeremy Healy in April and admits the break-up hit her hard.
She sometimes failed to shower or wash her hair and admits she looked like a "bag lady" - but pulled herself out of her gloom for the sake of her two sons.
Kensit tells Britain's Buzz magazine, "In the early days I didn't want to get out from under the duvet. Was I depressed? Oh God yes, absolutely. (My marriage) had failed and it wasn't even a year. But I couldn't hide under the covers for long because I had to show my kids that when something like this happens, you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself down, hold your head up and go.
"If I had gone under, what kind of mum would I be?... I was eating a box of doughnuts a day... Of course I blame myself for everything. I look back on all my marriages and think I should have done things differently."
Kensit was previously wed to Big Audio Dynamite frontman Dan Donovan, Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr and Oasis star Liam Gallagher.

Let bygones be bygones When Mick Jones was kicked out of The Clash in the early ‘80s, he formed Big Audio Dynamite, a group that melded Jones’ pop sensibilities with his earlier band’s punk ethos. This new edition of their 1985 debut, This Is Big Audio Dynamite, comes as a two-disc set featuring several remixed tracks, including “E=Mc2” and their first single “The Bottom Line.” On the first disc, the songs appear in their original form, showcasing Jones’ catchy hooks, experimental spoken-word phrasing and music/women/drugs lyricism. It’s iconic ’80s fare, as frothy and over-the-top as teased bangs and acid-washed...

British actress Patsy Kensit has ruled out marrying ever again following her split from her fourth husband. The "Lethal Weapon 2" star was plunged into a deep depression after separating from DJ Jeremy Healy in April, admitting she felt "foolish and ashamed" of the break-up.
And after four failed unions, Kensit has sworn off ever settling down again. She tells She magazine, "This year has been truly, truly awful. I lost my confidence and ballooned from eight stone to 11. But I'm looking forward now, with one million per cent conviction, that I definitely won't be getting married again."
"I also felt I'd put myself first before my kids and I didn't want that. It's embarrassing, humiliating, all those terrible emotions that make you want to run away and hide. I can't tell you how foolish and ashamed I feel."

British actress Patsy Kensit has scrapped her autobiography, which was set to lift the lid on her marriages to rockers Liam Gallagher, Jim Kerr, and Dan Donovan, just weeks before it was due to hit shelves. The "Lethal Weapon 2" star, whose fourth marriage to DJ Jeremy Healy fell apart in February this year, had put pen to paper for the tome to document her colorful life.
But Kensit has canceled plans to release the book for the sake of her 10-year-old son Lennon, by Oasis star Gallagher, according to Britain's Mail on Sunday. A source tells the publication, "The publishers wanted all the juicy details about their marriage and why it broke down and Liam said he didn't think it was right that Lennon should have to read that when he's older."

There are all manner of arguments for the greatest punk band in the history of the genre. There's a camp that believes the Sex Pistols are in the top position, while others believe the Ramones deserve the title. But was any band more influential (especially on second-generation combos like Green Day and Rancid) than the Clash? The group's blend of gutter punk, ska, reggae, world beat and dance music infused punk with a savage grace and also gave it a voice that was about injustice rather than nihilism. The group had two frontmen, and like any legendary two-headed beast, the center could not hold forever, and on September 1, 1983, Joe Strummer formally fired Mick Jones, shedding the McCartney to his Lennon.
The Clash didn't last long after Jones was cut loose. The Strummer-dominated final album Cut the Crap was a major disappointment, and the band broke up for good shortly thereafter.

Nirvana to Miley Cyrus. Green Day to Howlin' Wolf. Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Eat World. Obscure sample-happy Queens one-man band Kid America and the Action Figures to, of course, current tourmates Blink-182.
Those are some of the artists you'll hear on "Radio Weezer," the personal radio station the band launched Friday (August 28). The station follows in the footsteps of similar "Artist Personal Experience" radio stations from Christina Aguilera and the Eagles' Joe Walsh — who share management with Weezer — that have debuted in recent weeks.
A dip into the playlist Friday morning revealed some of the usual suspects (Ramones, R.E.M., Foo Fighters, Nirvana, the Pixies), as well as a few unexpected, more obscure surprises (songwriter Landon Pigg, MxPx, Frank Zappa) and, not surprisingly, Weezer's back catalog, including the band's toe-tappingly retro-pop new single,...

Last December, I met filmmaker Azazel Jacobs at a coffee shop just down the street from the Tribeca loft he grew up in, and where his parents . avant-garde cinema icon Ken Jacobs and longtime collaborator Flo . still rent. Though he now lives in L.A.'s Echo Park neighborhood, Aza was back in NYC for final tweaking on his third feature, "Momma's Man," before its unveiling at Sundance '08. The reason for our meeting was mostly professional, as Benten Films (a DVD label I run with film blogger Andrew Grant) had fallen in love with Jacobs' previous film, "The GoodTimesKid," starring his real-life girlfriend Sara Diaz, "I'm Going to Explode" writer/director Gerardo Naranjo, and himself. (Benten will release "The GoodTimesKid" in early 2009, so let the shilling stop here).
