The Day
Stars: Shawn Ashmore, Ashley Bell, Dominic Monaghan, Shannyn Sossamon, Cory Hardrict, Michael Eklund | Written by Luke Passmore | Directed by Doug Aarniokoski
It’s been ten years since the unnamed disaster struck, and a group of five survivors led by Rick and Adam are headed to greener pastures to try and find a place to plant some rare vegetable seed. They’re low on ammunition and food and one of the group is extremely sick. So they break from their usual protocol and hole up in an abandoned two-story farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. Their newest member Mary is the coldest and most solitary of them all, an almost superhuman fighter, yet to earn the trust of Shannon who wonders if maybe, just maybe, she has more in common with the cannibal clan that is their mortal enemy. Almost certainly the cannibals will soon come looking for prey...

The Day falls squarely into the latter category and the movie suffers greatly from it. Luke Passmore's script centers on a group of survivors travelling across the country in search of a haven where they can plant the few seeds they have acquired and start living again rather than simply surviving. The trio of friends have picked up a few girls along the way and the group, which used to number a dozen, is now down to their last five members with one falling rapidly ill. They take shelter in an abandoned house, the leader Rick (Dominic Monaghan) thinking they should spend the night and let their sick friend Henson (Cory Hardrict) recuperate before moving on. In staying, the group is breaking their cardinal rule and Adam (Shawn Ashmore) isn't happy about the possibility of being caught, food for cannibals who like to set up traps, but he reluctantly...

The Day tells of a group of five survivors (Shawn Ashmore, Ashley Bell, Cory Hardrict, Dominic Monaghan, and Shannyn Sossamon) armed with shotguns, axes and machetes, who wander the back roads of a ravaged post-apocalyptic future landscape looking for refuge. As war ravages humanity, destroying civilization and most of life on earth, the survivors realize they must do whatever it takes to stay alive. Lost, starving, and exhausted, they seek shelter in a seemingly safe abandoned farmhouse. However, while searching for food and resources, they unwittingly set off a trap signaling to the ruthless cannibal predators lying in wait to begin their deadly attack. With food and ammunition dwindling, the group must make a desperate final stand-over a 24 hour period-battling for their ultimate survival.
So, a group of stragglers are trying their best to survive in a “post-apocalyptic” world. It may not sound original and it’s not. The thing...

Director: Douglas Aarniokoski. Writers: Luke Passmore. Cast: Shawn Ashmore, Ashley Bell, Michael Eklund, Cory Hardrict, Dominic Monaghan, Shannyn Sossamon, Brianna Barnes and Kassidy Verreault. Tagline: "Fight. Or die." The tagline for The Day (above) sums up the film well. It is simple and ungrammatical, or poorly written. Characters are drab and motivations are sparse. This indie production is also very static in setting. Almost all of the film's runtime is spent on a dilapidated farmhouse. A cannibalistic antagonist adds little menace and even less intelligence compared to five survivors who are constantly on the run. A post-apocalyptic set semi-thriller, The Day is almost a non-event. The story focuses on five characters. They are survivors of an unnamed global catastrophe. Writer Luke Passmore seems to be taking some license with Cormac McCarthy's The Road. With that aside, these characters have been surviving for 10 years with little to eat and little time for.

Ghost Trek follows the Paranormal Underworld Detective Society (Puds) as they investigate haunts across the U.S. and abroad between tanning beds, babes, body-building, and bong hits — all the while risking life and limb capturing the undead and unexplained on video.

The Day
Written by Luke Passmore
Directed by Doug Aarniokoski
2011, USA
The Day delivers on the thrills one expects: splatter kills, seat-crunching suspense and visceral action set pieces are delivered in meaty portions guaranteed to have audiences screaming and clapping. Director Doug Aarniokoski, who served as an assistant and second unit director on films ranging from Dollman vs. Demonic Toys to From Dusk Till Dawn, crafts a sparse, lean take on the siege horror tale, set against the backdrop of a ragtag group of survivors making their way across a sketchy, post-apocalyptic stretch of the U.S.
Dominic Monaghan (of Lost and The Lord of the Rings fame), brings here a lo-fi star power to his role as the clear-headed leader who is guiding a group of five (formerly twelve) weapon-clad survivors including Shawn Ashmore, Shannyn Sossaman, Cory Hardrict and standout Ashley Bell (in a scene-stealing role as stoic and feral newcomer to the group,...

It goes without saying that the major motivation of any character in a post-apocalyptic movie is staying alive, so it wasn't so surprising to hear Dominic Monaghan (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) describe his new movie, The Day, as a "survival movie." What was somewhat surprising is the variety and amount of blood — from "dry scab" blood and "bags" of blood to "gore packs," which just sounds nasty — that the cast members apparently got covered in during filming. Click on the video above for an exclusive interview with Monaghan and his co-star, Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism).

Dread Central: The Day is this little indie movie I have been hearing about for some time now in interviews with guys like Shawn Ashmore and Cory (Hardrict) so I would think that getting ready for your theatrical debut has to be an incredible feeling, considering how ambitious the movie is. Can you talk more about that and how you became involved with the project as well?
