Transitioning from a period of monochromatic to color television and then taking leaps with technology, the latter half of the ‘90s saw the rise of several acclaimed franchises. Additionally, the constant push to compete and the near-limitless creative options brought over by new cameras and gears helped filmmakers usher in an era of pioneering.
Among the top visionaries of this period, Steven Spielberg stands as a hallowed persona for his immense contribution to the arts as well as to modern cinema.

Spanning across genres, the director’s works knew no bounds as he published one masterpiece after another, including the likes of Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Jaws, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Moreover, each of his projects took a step forward in expanding the boundaries of cinematic possibilities, making several franchises of today stand by adapting to those techniques.

Making an acting debut at the age of 13, Ryan Gosling began his career with kid-friendly roles such as The Mickey Mouse Club before branching off into the likes of Are You Afraid of the Dark, while still a child actor. A crime thriller, The Believer, marked his breakthrough role in 2001 and sent him off on a journey that would see him play versatile roles across dozens of genres.
However, he would still venture into the more serious side of cinema with new roles, even as light-hearted ones kept coming.

The shuffling between these two modes of acting continued until he starred as Ken for Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated flick, Barbie. Drenched in pink and helming a character that resonated with viewers across all ages, the role held a particularly personal importance for the actor.

Jordan Peele apparently opted not to take up an offer to join the MCU, and it turns out it was X-Men that was put before him.
There was a story floating around earlier this week that claimed Jordan Peele had been in discussions with Marvel Studios about directing one of its upcoming projects. However, at that point we were missing the juiciest detail of all, that being the project in question.
Even though the offer was reportedly declined by Peele, the story led to plenty of speculation regarding which project the Get Out filmmaker had been offered, with Marvel’s troubled Blade being a popular choice, even though that production already has a director (or at least we think it does), Yann Demange.
A fresh story has now surfaced to corroborate the original story, claiming that Peele met with Marvel – although this story adds that “it was a long time...

Mattel and Universal are joining forces to bring Monster High to the movies: more on the film project here.
We’ve known for some time now that Mattel has a huge number of screen projects, based on its many toy lines, that are in various states of development. Whether it’s the oddly-appealing Daniel Kaluuya-starring take on Barney, Vin Diesel being attached to Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, JJ Abrams making Hot Wheels or Amazon MGM’s Masters Of The Universe, the toy company has lots of potential projects in the pipeline.
All of that goes without mentioning the possibility of another Barbie film, whether that’s with or without the directorial talents of Greta Gerwig, we’d imagine.
However, it’s another line of dolls that have now joined the party with the announcement that Mattel has joined forces with Universal to produce Monster High, a film based...

Despite earning acclaim for his work, Hollywood filmmaker, Woody Allen, has continued to be a controversial figure in the industry. The filmmaker is also known for his nuanced yet problematic portrayal of women in his movies.

While he seems appreciative of women’s complexity, his portrayals always hint at underlying tension with lingering shots and camera angles that have raised concern about objectification. And his opinions don’t seem to have changed much as an excerpt from his 2020 memoir suggests where he talks about the leading ladies of his 2008 movie, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Greta Gerwig didn’t call Margot Robbie’s “Barbie” character Stereotypical Barbie for nothing.
The history of the white, blonde “all-American” beauty ideals have been wrapped up in the iconography of the Barbie doll itself, and now, Netflix’s aptly-titled “Black Barbie” documentary charts the creation of the first Black Mattel doll.
Executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, “Black Barbie” centers on a trio of Black women who forever impacted the legacy of both Barbie dolls and conglomerate Mattel itself. The first Black Barbie was created in 1980 after a Mattel employee asked company co-founder Ruth Handler, “Why don’t we make a Barbie that looks like me?”
It was a great question. And then they did exactly that by launching the first non-white Barbie.
The Shondaland documentary charts the historical impact of Black dolls on both the Civil Rights Movement and Black entrepreneurship in the U.S.

After the success of Prey, director Dan Trachtenberg is reportedly working on his next standalone film in the Predator franchise. Titled Badlands, the film reportedly features Elle Fanning in the lead role. While no plot details have been revealed, the film will also be set in the Predator universe like Prey.

Fanning’s casting might just be a masterstroke for the film as she has been known for her powerhouse performances. While she was recently seen in her Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated series The Great, Fanning has been delivering amazing performances since she made her debut as a child actress in I Am Sam. Here are five performances that prove why she is the best choice for Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator film.

To celebrate Thursday’s season 20 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, Chris Carmack (Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln) provided a remake of I’m Just Ken, the Oscar-nominated song from Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Barbie blockbuster.
Joining him were co-stars Natalie Morales, Camilla Luddington, James Pickens Jr., Anthony Hill, Harry Shum Jr., and Kevin McKidd.
Pink hospital scrubs substituted for Ken’s faux fur coat, sunglasses, and a rainbow-colored cowboy hat as Carmack lip-synched Ryan Gosling’s vocals.

Kareena Kapoor Khan Vs Margot Robbie: Who Looked More Gorgeous In The Vivienne Westwood Outfit? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Margot Robbie are the most popular actresses in Bollywood and Hollywood. The Aussie star is one of the highest-paid female actors in Hollywood, and so is Bebo in Bollywood. There are quite a few similarities between the two, and recently, they added yet another as both Bebo and Margot have worn the same Vivienne Westwood attire, and today, we will be dissecting their looks individually. Scroll below for more.
Kareena is a versatile actress and has given some iconic characters to Indian cinema, like Poo from Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham and Geet in Jab We Met. There is hardly any actress who could have pulled off a role like Poo the way Bebo did. Similarly, Margot was flabbergasted as Barbie in the Greta Gerwig-helmed movie last year.

Saoirse Ronan is taking on one of her most intense roles yet.
After playing a haunting child with sociopathic tendencies in “Atonement,” the now-grownup A-lister leads Sundance breakout-indie “The Outrun,” based on Amy Liptrot’s bestselling memoir.
Ronan stars as Rona (a bit confusing), a young woman recovering from alcoholism. Rona returns to her remote home in the Orkney Islands after losing herself in London; there, she reconnects with her past, her parents, and the atmospheric isolation of the islands on which she grew up.
Nora Fingscheidt directs the highly-anticipated feature, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. IndieWire critic David Ehrlich tweeted on Thursday, “So weird that this very good Saoirse Ronan drama still doesn’t have U.S. distribution! Not the easiest sell in the world, but she’s an absolute force in it.”

Standing tall as one of the most well-decorated filmmakers of recent times and the director of the highest-grossing movie ever by a female director, Greta Gerwig put her best foot forward with Barbie. The mega-movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as its leads, rode on the creative vision of the 40-year-old as it brought to life Mattel’s doll in a story that revolved around breaking stereotypes and the boundaries between fictional and real universes.

Another weekend, another bit of very bad news for the movie business. Memorial Day weekend has, historically, been a major frame for the box office, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake pulling in $95.4 million last year. (That number grows to $117.5 million when accounting for the Monday holiday.) That's what we've come to expect, pandemic notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the dual threat of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" didn't prove to be much of a threat at all, as both films fell well short of expectations, leading to a downright terrible holiday weekend. Garfuriosa was, in the end, the direct opposite of last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon in every way imaginable.
Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" took the top spot on the charts, pulling in $26.3 million through Sunday, with that number growing to an estimated $32 million when accounting for Monday. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' new animated "Garfield" film landed at number two...

After beaching off Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and highlighting the hard work of stunt performers in David Leitch’s The Fall Guy, Sony is capitalizing on the “Gosling-ssance” with the release of his 2011 thriller Drive on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The brutal film from Nicolas Winding Refn drips with style, presents Gosling in one of his most iconic roles, and is due for a comeback in crisp, clean, high definition.
Here’s Sony‘s official synopsis for Drive:
Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. The Barbenheimer phenomenon was something that everyone talked about last summer when two very important movies came out. One of them was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, a movie that showed us how great feminism can work on screen, while the other was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt, a movie that showed us the terror of atomic energy. Both these movies were released at the same time and many people believed that they would cancel each other out and create a rivalry, but what happened was something completely different!
Fans of both movies united and this led to the birth of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, which brought in a substantial amount of money for cinemas last year, as Barbie fans called for people to go watch Oppenheimer, while Oppenheimer fans urged people to go watch Barbie. The summer of 2023 was encapsulated in two films at the same time: Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan and Barbie by Greta Gerwig. Since they came out the same weekend, moviegoers were treated to a sort of double feature.
These two blockbusters not only dominated the world last year, but they also reignited our collective desire for a silver-screen experience. Both films exceeded box office expectations, with Margot Robbie’s film enchanting its way to a $1.4 billion global haul, while Oppenheimer’s Oscar-winning narrative netted a whopping $951.4 million.

But Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently stirred quite the conversation with his belief that these films could have shone just as brightly on streaming platforms. One can’t help but wonder: How different would the scenario be if these cultural phenomena had debuted on Netflix rather than the cinema’s big screen?

Ted Sarandos is commenting on the box office success of Oppenheimer, Barbie, and their Netflix series Baby Reindeer.
In a new interview, the Netflix CEO said that the films starring Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy would’ve been just as big on the streaming platform.
“Both of those movies would be great for Netflix. They definitely would have enjoyed just as big an audience on Netflix,” Sarandos said in an interview with the New York Times. “And so I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that certain kinds of movies do or don’t work. Missing out on making (even more) Oscars history is ancient history to Lily Gladstone.
The “Killers of the Flower Moon” breakout could have been the first Native-American actress to win the Best Actress Academy Award — if not for Emma Stone’s physical and soul-baring turn as Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” For now, being the first Native-American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award will have to do, but with all the projects and opportunities Gladstone’s got on her plate after “Killers” — including being a recent part of Greta Gerwig’s jury at Cannes — it’s easy to imagine more awards are on the way.
“I mean, regardless of how things turned out, I have work coming out and I have work lined up,” Gladstone said of her Oscar loss in a recent interview with Empire Magazine. “And I have this beautiful film ‘Fancy Dance’ queued up. I...

American independent filmmaker Sean Baker was, for us at Filmmaker, the thrilling winner of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or for his forthcoming Neon release, Anora, a comedy about a sex worker, played by Mickey Madison, and her relationship with a Russian oligarch’s son. “This literally has been my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years,” Baker said on accepting the award from the Greta Gerwig-led jury, “so I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. But I do know that I will continue to fight for cinema because right […]

Cannes awards have become hugely influential in subsequent awards races, especially the Oscars. The top honor, the Palme d’Or, confers prestige and a stamp of approval — this year from the Competition jury led by multi hyphenate Greta Gerwig — that awards voters take seriously.
Palme winners “Parasite,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Anatomy of a Fall” were all Best Picture Oscar contenders and won Oscars. And they were all picked up by specialty distributor Neon before they won their Cannes prize. Neon did not break its streak. It acquired two eventual prize-winners before the closing ceremony: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” the first American film to win the prize since Terence Malick’s “Tree of Life” in 2011, and Iranian dissident filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” which took home a special award.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival was officially closed yesterday, on May 25, 2024, as the prizes for the movies and the actors were awarded at the closing ceremony. It was a very exciting and content-filled event, and we have also reported on numerous movies that had their premiere at Cannes, some of which were received well, while others… not so much. But, naturally, everyone wants to know who won and who lost at Cannes, and that is what we are going to report about in this article.
The article will be divided into two main sections. The first one will list all the juries at Cannes, since they are the ones who chose the winners at the film festival, so we think that it is only fair that you know who picked the winners. After that, we are going to list all the winners in each of the categories.

Rapper Nicki Minaj is currently on her concert tour titled Pink Friday 2 World Tour or Gag City Tour. It began in March 2024 and is the fourth solo concert tour in her career. It will consist of a total of 82 shows across three continents. Not only is the tour the highest-grossing concert tour of Nicki Minaj’s career, but it is also the highest-grossing tour ever by a female rapper. Needless to say, things were looking up for the rapper.

Some of The Beach Boys‘ hits made it all the way to No. 1, but the overwhelming majority did not. Some of their most important tunes got nowhere close. Here’s a look at five tunes that didn’t get as much love as they deserved.
1. ‘California Girls’
One of the best summer jams of all time, “California Girls,” only peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. While Mike Love’s lyrics are cute and sweet, the real star of the song is Brian Wilson’s production, especially the opening riff. Pop music has rarely been as complex or beautiful as the intro to “California Girls.”
The tune also helped cement California’s sun and fun image. Katy Perry nicked the title of this tune for her own track “California Gurls,” which reuses the line “I wish they all could be California girls.” While Perry’s song is great, it doesn’t compare to the original.

Sean Baker achieved the “singular goal” he’s been working toward his entire filmmaking career on Saturday when he won the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival’s coveted Palme d’Or for his sex worker drama “Anora.”
Speaking breathlessly to the ceremony’s black-tied international audience after thanking the festival jury — as led by Greta Gerwig — and his film’s various collaborators, stars and producers, the acclaimed indie filmmaker turned his attention to his mounting concern over the future of cinema and specifically the movie-going experience.
“This literally has been my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years, so I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. But I do know that I will continue to fight for cinema because right now as filmmakers, we have to fight to keep cinema alive,” Baker said. He then turned his attention...

When Pink Friday 2 hit the shelves in the twilight of 2023, Nicki Minaj couldn’t have been happier. Her fifth studio album was going strong, amassing 228,000 units sold in its first week itself, ensuring that it debuted at No.1 on Billboard 200. It also made her the female rapper with Most No.1s on the chart. But time spares no one.
2024 has not gone as Nicki Minaj would have wanted it to. The Super Bass singer’s Pink Friday 2 World Tour was expected to be a sensation. But right when she was in the European leg of the Tour, she seems to have been caught in a pickle, one which will be hard to break out of.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival concluded on Saturday, May 25 following two weeks packed with screenings, stars, press and parties. With the prizes having been handed out for the festival’s 77th anniversary, we can now start looking at what contenders might be in the best spot to get into the upcoming Oscar race. Let’s examine the winners from this year’s festival and see the history that each category has when it comes to the Oscars.
In recent years, we’ve seen the festival serve as a huge springboard for major players in the Oscar derby. Three of the last four winners of the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, have nabbed Best Picture nominations: “Parasite” (2019), “Triangle of Sadness” (2022) and “Anatomy of a Fall” (2023). Other big winners at recent festivals that became big Oscar players include “Drive My Car,” “The Zone of Interest” and “BlacKkKlansman.” This year’s...

Often, the juries at the Cannes Film Festival will try to make a political statement in their choices for the winners of the world’s most famous film festival. Not this year. At least, not in the way they might have.
I rather thought that director Mohammad Rasoulof would take the Palme d’Or for his stirring The Seed Of The Sacred Fig. It deals with the oppressive regime in Iran and the crisis in one family, where the daughters rise up to protest against the wishes of their father, a judge handing out death sentences for those who make their voices heard.
Plus, the back story of Rasoulof’s own daring escape from his home country after making this movie in secrecy and also being handed an eight-year prison sentence, is also a strong one.
He made his way to Cannes, where his film deservedly received a rapturous welcome...

“We really led with our hearts for everything we watched,” said 77th Cannes Film Festival Jury President Greta Gerwig on what was a fiercely competitive year.
In a Cannes that delivered a Demi Moore comeback pro-femme horror film Substance, a ground breaking trans noir Spanish-lingo musical in Emilia Perez, Francis Ford Coppola’s $120M passion project Megalopolis, it was Sean Baker’s dark romantic comedy about a sex worker, Anora that transcended this year’s jury.
“It was an embarrassment of riches this year in terms of cinema,” exclaimed Gerwig, “we (the jury) could have been talking into next week.”
Anora follows a stripper who falls for a Russia oligarch’s son. He loves her so much, he marries her, much to the chagrin of his family. Chaos ensues.
Said Gerwig on why they chose it: “There was something that reminded us of a classic, there were structures of Lubitsch and Howard Hawks.

Update: Sean Baker’s New York-set romantic dramedy Anora has scooped the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or. This marked Baker’s second time in the competition after 2021’s Red Rocket, and tonight’s win amounted to the realization of what Baker said has been his “singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years.”
Anora stars Mikey Madison as a stripper from Brooklyn who transforms into a modern Cinderella when she meets the son of a Russian oligarch. Complications arise when his parents find out and try to get the marriage annulled.

In his review, Deadline’s Damon Wise called it “a high-decibel screwball comedy… that accelerates at speed, cruises at high altitude for a surprisingly long time, then comes back down to Earth with a deeply affecting and almost unbearably melancholy coda that sends the audience out in silence.

After two weeks of nonstop cinema, the moment of truth finally arrived. The winners of the 77th Cannes Film Festival were announced at a gala ceremony on Saturday night.
The Palme d’Or, the fest’s top honor, went to Sean Baker’s sex worker screwball comedy Anora. A nervous and shaking Baker took the stage and thanked the jury, saying he still “couldn’t believe it.” Baker said winning Cannes’ top prize has been “my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years.”
Baker also singled out Francis Ford Coppola and David Cronenberg, two veteran directors with films in Cannes competition this year, as major inspirations. Baker has come far, going from shooting his 2015 feature Tangerine on an iPhone5s to winning the Palme d’Or. He is the first American director to win the Palme since Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life in 2011.

Sean Baker’s “Anora” has won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, a jury headed by Greta Gerwig announced on Saturday.
The win for Baker’s freewheeling film about a stripper and the son of a Russian oligarch becomes the fifth consecutive Palme winner to be distributed by Neon, which previously handled “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Triangle of Sadness,” “Titane” and “Parasite.”
TheWrap’s review said of the film, “It’s one of the most entertaining movies to play in Cannes this year, and also one of the most confounding: part character study of the title character (Mikey Madison), a sex worker from Brighton Beach who falls for rich Russian playboy Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn); part look into the world of the super-rich, an arena Baker has studiously avoided in films like ‘Tangerine,’ ‘The Florida Project’ and ‘Red Rocket’; part escalating nightmare comedy reminiscent of ’80s gems...

Cannes — Nine years after being named one of Variety’s Directors to Watch, Sean Baker won the Palme d’Or for “Anora,” a rowdy whirlwind romance between an exotic dancer (Mikey Madison) and the obscenely rich son of a Russian oligarch (played by Mark Eydelshteyn). Baker is the first American filmmaker to cinch the festival’s top prize since Terrence Malick earned the Palme for “The Tree of Life” in 2011.
“Anora” is Baker’s third film to debut at Cannes, following “The Florida Project” and “Red Rocket.” He accepted the award from two-time Palme d’Or winner Francis Ford Coppola, whose “Megalopolis” went home empty-handed. Coppola also presented an honorary Palme d’Or to his friend and fellow legend George Lucas, whom he called his “own kid brother.”
Baker dedicated the award to “all sex workers, past, present and future,” underscoring the importance of “making films intended for theatrical exhibition.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is finally coming to a close — but not without a big splash. Crossing the Croissette one last time, stars and filmmakers alike are about to find out who’s taking home this year’s prizes.

The hype out of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, for those far-flung and on the ground, tells one story: This was among the weaker lineups in recent memory.
Sure, huge stories broke out of the festival, from Francis Ford Coppola’s distribution push for his self-funded, decades-in-the-making passion project “Megalopolis” to Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof fleeing his home country after being sentenced to eight years in prison, finally making it to Cannes with his new film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.” This journey inspired the jury to award him and his film a Special Prize (Prix Spécial).
Elsewhere in the official selection, Un Certain Regard already handed out its prizes on Friday from a jury led by Xavier Dolan and including Maïmouna Doucouré, Asmae El Moudir, Vicky Krieps, and Todd McCarthy.
