Rango is a visual breakthrough, titillating to the eyes, and a masterpiece in today’s cluttered world of 3D gimmicks. The title character Rango, voiced impeccably by Johnny Depp, has an abundance of heart hidden behind layers of reptilian skin, one-liners and a story that delivers a socio-economic message. Although Rango will wow you in the first twenty minutes, much of the laughter is left to isolated pockets of humor, which don’t carry on throughout the length of the film. Secondary characters are left to quant moments of quick forgettable zingers. Rango is a great one-time watch and children will love it. However, the memory of this film will lie buried in the sand of the Mojave Desert where the story takes place.
Lately, animated features have been prone to start with some form of narrative, storytelling voice to usher in the film. Rango follows suit, using four weathered-desert mariachi owls,...

Fox 11 morning show host Steve Edwards accepted the Governor's award at the 62nd Annual L.A. Area Emmy Awards Saturday night with characteristic self-depreciating humor about five decades on the dial in Southern California, the last 15 years as host of "Good Day L.A." "I'm feeling too young for this award," joked Edwards. "I'm just getting started."
But it was Knbc's night to sweep the top Emmy awards for English and Spanish language local news stations in Southern California. KNBC4 won six Emmys alone and one with Spanish station KVEA52. Those included the Emmys for Daily Evening Newscast (Ch.4 News at 11); Daytime Newscast (Ch. 4 News at 5 p.m.), Outstanding Hard News Reporting (Ana Garcia and Fred Momoun), Entertainment Program ("My 1st Time Nominated for an Academy Award") and outstanding news feature (Chuck Henry).
Public TV station Kcet tied for second with five Emmys, along with Ktla, which took best morning show.

L.A.-based duopoly Kcbs-tv and Kcal-tv have shuffled the news anchors for their weeknight newscasts.
Pat Harvey, a 20-year Kcal veteran who was one of the original anchors of the station's primetime news, is switching to Kcbs to co-anchor the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Paul Magers, who has held that role since 2004 with Laura Diaz.
Diaz, meanwhile, is getting bumped to Kcbs' 6 p.m. newscast as that program's sole anchor. Diaz will also take on the extra responsibility of hosting and playing a role in the creation of a series of local news and public affairs specials.
Kcal weathercaster Jackie Johnson will succeed Johnny Mountain as Kcbs weeknight weathercaster. Mountain, a five-year Kcbs veteran whose career spans 32 years on Los Angeles television, announced his retirement last month. Josh Rubenstein, the weekday meteorologist for Kcbs and Kcal, will provide Kcal's weeknight weather reports until a successor for Johnson is named.
