Remember the iconic “Mortal Monday” Mortal Kombat TV commercial from back in the day? You know, the one where everyone runs into the streets shouting “Mortal Kombat!”?
Warner Bros and NetherRealm have tapped into the nostalgia vein again with a new trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1. Directed by Tom Kuntz with cinematography by Academy Award nominee Matthew Libatique (A Star Is Born), the new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer features Dave Bautista (A Knock at the Cabin) kicking everything off.
The new trailer appears to even include a reference to the original kid from the original commercial!
This new trailer deviates from the original TV spot, seeing Bautista amassing people from all walks of life and empowering them to unleash the fight within. The role Bautista plays mirrors that of Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat 1, who has created a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe, and must bring together champions from across the...

In case you need a reminder how flush and competitive the TV landscape is at the moment: Netflix is spending $5 billion dollars on programming this year. So, if you want to keep pace, you have to throw down some cash, and that's exactly what their rivals Amazon are doing. Today it emerged that the online retailer is backing a whole new slate of feature films. From "Transparent" creator Jill Soloway (who is already brewing a new comedy for Amazon titled "I Love Dick"), the studio is developing “Ten Aker Wood,” a coming-of-age story about a woman who leaves her failing marriage and life on a pot farm, and falls in love a biker and his lifestyle. Tamara Jenkins (“The Savages,” “Slums of Beverly Hills”) is working on the drama “Private Life” about a woman in her 40s who will do anything to have a child. Meanwhile, Barry Levinson has a...

Furthering their burgeoning status as the most auteur-happy studio in contemporary American cinema, Amazon Studios have struck another deal with Jill Soloway, creator of their hit series Transparent. Per Variety, she’ll be writing and directing a new feature, Ten Aker Wood, which is described as “a coming-of-age story [centering] on a woman in a failing marriage who leaves Los Angeles to live on a pot farm in Northern California.” Further details are scant, save for the notice that a romance develops — and, on Soloway’s part, the story bears autobiographical components.
Amazon’s also establishing projects with Barry Levinson (concerning “the Los Angeles comedy scene of the 1960s and ’70s”) and The Savages‘ Tamara Jenkins. She’ll helm Private Life, “about a woman in her 40s who goes to extremes to have a child,” while Tom Kuntz is to direct Desired Moments, which, as written by Griffin Creech, follows “a lonely TV station employee.

In recent months, Hulu has released several original series that have the potential to raise its profile in the digital video industry. First there was Difficult People, a catty comedy that drew good reviews and a fair bit of media attention. Then, in October, viewers met Casual, a Jason Reitman comedy that has plenty of praise of its own.
Having released these two attention-grabbers, Hulu is looking to drum up even more support for its original programming plans. On October 18th, it debuted a TV commercial that places its originals front and center.
The commercial, created by ad agency twofifteenmccann, is directed by Tom Kuntz, who also directed Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” spot. Here, Kuntz employs a similar style, as a charming host walks through Hulu’s office while monologuing. There are a lot of celebrity cameos, but what most caught my eye was...

The production marks one of the first films to be developed since producer Ted Hope was brought on to the Amazon team to generate content to be distributed in theaters before coming exclusively to Amazon. "Desired Moments" is a dark comedy about a midwestern TV station employee and the online wish-granting service he becomes obsessed with. No release date information has been set, though Deadline reports that Amazon is looking to lock down the male lead relatively soon. Dick Valentine sounds like the kind of name you’d see featured in the credits of a blue movie. However, Dick Valentine is not a pornstar as his name suggests, he is something altogether more thrilling and stupendous. He is the frontman of the whimsical rock and roll band from Detroit, Electric Six.
Electric Six are back on the scene with a fresh new tour where they will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their classic Fire album. Fire was the group’s breakthrough album, reaching #7 in the UK charts and was a commercial and critical triumph, featuring comedy injected hits ‘Danger! High Voltage’ and ‘Gaybar’. Not only are these tracks undeniably catchy, but they are accompanied by entertaining music videos courtesy of the humorous cinematic vision of directors Tom Kuntz and Mike Maguire. The album went gold in the September of 2003 and remains the most successful of their 7 subsequent studio albums.

Publicis Mojo Sydney’s ‘Super in, super out’ spot for Hahn Super Dry, which uses the theme music from Knight Rider, claimed one of only two Aussie winners from 92 entries in the Film Lions at Cannes in a year that has seen Australia miss out on a grand prix winner.
The ad, directed by Tom Kuntz through Mjz Films, shows how beer is made at the Hahn factory with things that guys like – beach buggies, rock music, sports, helicopters and a rubber tiger filled with beer.
Michael Canning, executive creative director of Leo Burnett Us, said of the Hahn spot: “Beer ads should be about having some fun with the brand. The agency didn’t over complicate it – it’s a fun, entertaining piece that gave the jury a laugh.”
Ddb Sydney and Soma Films won a silver for Cross country for the Volkswagen Tiguan.
There were no winners for New Zealand.

Interactivity on YouTube is nothing new. It’s something we’ve covered here at Tubefilter a lot. Content creators use the site’s annotation tools to create compelling Choose Your Own Adventure style stories. Brands design YouTube pages with clever ways for viewers to engage with more than a play button. But what is new is an advertiser asking for your tactile participation. (It's not new to Ze Frank has, of course, but it's new to advertisers.) Skittles wants you to give YouTube the finger. Literally. The rainbow-colored, fruit-flavored candy just launched a series of videos in which you’re asked to lend a digit, place said digit on a specified location on the screen of whatever device you’re using to watch the videos, and then watch the pivotal role that digit plays as the action unfolds. Pretty clever. Here it is in action: If you think the interactive advertisements look slick,...

It all started with Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim. The duo behind Adult Swim's oddball Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and those absurd Zach Galifianaks Absolut commercials you love were tapped by white hot advertising agency Wieden and Kennedy to direct some Old Spice TV spots. The ads feature ex-nfl linebacker Terry Crews, his massive biceps and chiseled sub-5% body fat frame, and Heidrecker and Warehim's special blend of bizarre. You can call the campaign "Corporate America's relentless co-option of the interesting," but I just call it good advertising. And it only gets better. After the success of the Crews commercials, Wieden and Kennedy called up award-winning commercial director Tom Kuntz to create his own set of unique Old Spice spots. Featuring chiseled ex-nfl wide receiver Isaiah Mustafa, Kuntz's ads take the Hedecker and Wareheim beat-you-over-the-head brand of weird down a notch, just enough so as to maintain...

Kathryn Bigelow has nabbed the Directors Guild of America award for her work on "The Hurt Locker."
The feature film award and other directorial achievement awards were announced during the 62nd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Los Angeles, hosted by Carl Reiner.
In the past, the DGA's feature film award winner has been a decent predictor of who will win the best director Oscar. Since 1948, the DGA and Academy have only differed six times in that category.
Bigelow beat out fellow directors James Cameron ("Avatar"), Lee Daniels ( "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire"), Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air") and Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds").
The other awards in directorial achievement follow:

In an historic win, Kathryn Bigelow and her tense Iraq War drama "The Hurt Locker" from Summit Entertainment copped the DGA Award for best-directed feature film Saturday.
The win drew cheers from a packed ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, where throughout the night it was clear many were pulling for Bigelow to deliver a dramatic victory for female filmmakers. The DGA feature film win was a first-ever by a woman.
"This is the most incredible moment of my life," Bigelow said.
Bigelow overcame competition including Fox-distributed "Avatar," directed by her ex-husband James Cameron; Lee Daniels and "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" from Lionsgate; Jason Reitman and "Up in the Air" from Paramount; and Quentin Tarantino and "Inglourious Basterds" from the Weinstein Co.

The Director's Guild Awards were held last night, and they're pretty much useless as awards go, but they do seem to be the last of the major awards before the Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday. The "major shocker" here, apparently, is that Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) beat out her ex-husband James Cameron for best director, although it's only a "major shocker" if the Golden Globes were the only awards this season you're familiar with. In fact, the bigger shock would've been if Cameron had won, since of the 9 major awards for director so far this awards season, Bigelow has won seven now, to Cameron's one (Golden Globes) and Clint Eastwood's one (The National Board). So, please, La Times, "shocking" is the last fucking word you could use to describe Bigelow's victory, which you should know since you're the goddamn "Awards Insider." I have no idea why this bothers me,...
