Baseball’s top free agents, like Mookie Betts of the Dodgers, are likely facing a non-existent free-agent market this offseason – and perhaps beyond that – if the sport can’t figure out a way to salvage at least a portion of the 2020 season.
Betts was scheduled to be paid $27 million this season, which has been delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. He and the Houston Astros’ George Springer, who was supposed to collect $21 million this season, are among the marquee players who might suffer, salary-wise, if owners and players can’t work out a deal to play.
The terms of baseball’s return, possibly as soon as July, are being negotiated by owners and the union that represents players. Issues being discussed are related to economics, of course, but health and safety, too. There have been more than 1.5 million cases of the virus in the U.S., resulting in almost 92,000 deaths.

The New York Mets are in final negotiations with CAA agent Brodie Van Wagenen to become their next head of baseball operations, according to reports.
Van Wagenen is 44 and the co-head of CAA’s baseball division. He is considered an outside-the-box choice, beating out veteran baseball men and wunderkind Chaim Bloom of the Tampa Bay Rays, a 35-year-old executive with major analytics skills and who was part of the executive team that led the perennially under-capitalized Tampa team to 90 victories this year.
Reports indicate the Mets are negotiating the contract details to finalize the deal with Van Wagenen. A final announcement will either have to occur on Monday’s off-day for the World Series, or wait until the event’s conclusion to avoid stealing the thunder from the championship.
The NY Mets job presents a challenge for Van Wagenen, who has never run a team.

For a film that’s nominally a sports movie, there’s something conspicuously absent from “The Phenom”: teammates. Instead, writer-director Noah Buschel carves out the time usually spent on building camaraderie and team-based drama to hone in on a single player. Without that team as the go-to filter to understand this talented-but-struggling pitcher, what follows in “The Phenom” is an atypical meditation on what it means to succeed on stages great and small.
Johnny Simmons stars as Hopper Gibson, a young righthander consigned to a rehab assignment after his lack of control derails a promising career. His team enlists the help of Dr. Mobley (Paul Giamatti), a renowned sports psychologist, to help unlock the mental secret to restoring Hopper to winning ways. While Hopper and Mobley philosophize over the nature of mental blocks, Buschel intersperses scenes from the player’s past family turmoil and struggles as a high school standout.

New York -- Jay-z is applying to become a baseball agent.
The Major League Baseball Players Association said Friday the rapper's application to be certified was received a day earlier.
Jay-z's Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports announced last week they were partnering in the agency business, and Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano was the first client. CAA's Brodie Van Wagenen replaced Scott Boras as Cano's listed agent.
Jay-z, whose given name is Shawn Carter, is in the process of selling his minority share of the Brooklyn Nets. Had he kept his share with the NBA club he might have faced potential problems in becoming certified by the Mlbpa.

In my opinion, one of the most amazing things to emerge in the aftermath of the sudden and crushingly sad death of the young Angels pitcher, Nick Adenhart is the open way his agent has mourned him. If you haven't seen the video of Scott Boras speaking at the Angels' team press conference on Thursday morning, check out the clip here. What's stunning is the the way he openly weeped without feeling the need to excuse himself as he said a few words about the tragedy he learned of in the middle of the night. It is a natural thing to do but I never thought I'd see Scott Boras allow himself to appear vulnerable in quite that manner. All we ever see of the man is his steely gaze and his intransigence during negotiations. Boras made himself available for radio interviews...
