There’s always another multiverse to explore in the Spider-Man world. Following the record-smashing success of live-action “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the Sony-Marvel property lands another installment with animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” in theaters June 2, 2023.
The sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning “Into the Spider-Verse” will focus on the romance between Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) while continuing the multiverse-bending action adventure. The film finds Miles and Gwen as they team up with other Spider-People “to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.” There will be more than 240 new characters introduced.
Issa Rae and Oscar Isaac join the ensemble cast, with Jake Johnson also reprising his previous Peter B. Parker role for the sequel. Jason Schwartzman voices new villain The Spot, inspired by an ink blob on canvas.

Much like the Super-Collider at the center of its multiverse plot, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” opened a rift that continues to impact the world around it. Its influence can still be felt across the film industry, from “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” and “The Bad Guys” to the new “Puss in Boots” blending CG animation with illustrated looks — showing not only what superhero movies could do better, but how Hollywood animation as a whole could improve.
For the sequel to the Oscar winner, the filmmakers are not just resting on their laurels, but doubling down on the innovation of “Into the Spider-Verse.” This means inventing new tools for animation and challenging the characters with emotional stories. But arguably the biggest innovation is the way “Across the Spider-Verse” challenges the superhero film industrial complex and its treatment of comic book artists, by making them a part of the film’s development.

Spider-Man, meet your new foe.
To cap off an Annecy presentation that saw 15 minutes of work in progress footage screen for the first time before a public audience, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson lifted the veil on the film’s big bad – an enigmatic antagonist known as The Spot.
“For those who are not hardcore canon nerds, The Spot is one of the deepest cuts in Spider-Man’s rogue gallery,” said co-director Powers. “But he has a super-power that really excited our entire team: His entire body is covered in little interdimensional portals that can send him anywhere he wants to go.”
Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, the villain will use those portals as weapons against returning webslingers Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), while bringing new heroes from across the Spider-Verse like Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and Jessica Drew (Issa Rae) into the fray.

Batman: Black and White is an almost 25-year-old anthology series that gave titans of the industry, brilliant artists and writers, a chance to go wild and show off what they could do with the Dark Knight and his world. While the series has been around since 1996, Batman: Black and White has been on hiatus since 2014, but that’s about to change in December.
The anthology returns with a new volume on Dec. 8, as announced by DC Comics. The oversized book will run for six issues and each 48-page issue will feature new short stories from an incredible collection of creators. The first issue features covers from long-time Batman artist and Dark Nights: Death Metalhead Greg Capullo; a Talia cover from Peach Momoko; and one from “The Black Glove”‘s Jh Williams.

This January, just ahead of the highly anticipated film, Marvel will reveal T’Challa’s journey to become king of Wakanda in Rise of the Black Panther, co-written by io9 senior writer Evan Narcisse and Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, along with artist Paul Renaud. Set in the world of Coates’ landmark Black Panther book, this new series will tell the story of Young T’Challa and his lineage, showing how the world learns about the wondrous nation of Wakanda for the first time.
This 6-issue run will also explore the reign of T’Chaka, the king whose death changed Wakanda’s history, and the life of T’Challa’s birth mother – someone T’Challa never had the chance to know. Narcisse will be making his comics debut with this series, and each issue will feature a painted cover by Black Panther artist Brian Stelfreeze.

This week, we brought word that Dark Knight III: The Master Race would be undergoing a slight name change upon its release as a collected edition, effectively being rechristened as Batman: The Dark Knight: The Master Race. Well, it appears that trend will continue with a companion book set to arrive this September.
If you’ve been keeping up with the threequel to Frank Miller’s immortal classic The Dark Knight Returns – or at least news pertaining to it – you’re likely aware that this limited series has seen an obscene amount of variant covers, particularly for the first couple issues. Normally, stuff like this appears as supplemental material in the back of its relevant trade, but if that were the case with this story, the book would’ve been as thick as the Yellow Pages.

There’s no single moment in the creation of the comics that I make that cement the driving feeling of accomplishment more for me than finalizing the lettering on a page. When it comes time to build The Samurnauts, my studio (Unshaven Comics for the uninitiated) subscribes to a combination of the so-called DC Style and the so-called Marvel Method.
The DC Style such as its short-handed via various wikis and whatnot is a full script treatment. This means that the writers produce a script that outlines every bit of information to be in a given comic – from the panel descriptions, to the actual laid out dialogue, caption boxes, and onomatopoeia.
The Marvel Method is often the cited style of the stalwart staple of Marvel Studios, Stan Lee. Stan provided his artist collaborators the basic structures and story beats. He’d allow them to lay it all out as they saw fit.

With superheroes dominating the box office and ruling the airwaves these days, it comes as no surprise that a fair percentage of people being exposed to such characters via live action offerings will become curious and check out the source material. What may intimidate them, however, is where to start reading due to years of comic book continuity having been piled up.
Something I’ve often done is recommend that people check out their local libraries, where they can sample a multitude of definitive graphic novels for free. And, should you elect to do so, you’ll likely find one of several Marvel series to be recently recognized by the Young Adult Library Services Association (Yalsa) such as Star Wars, All-New Wolverine or The Vision.

To date, Marvel Studios has kept fairly quite quiet about its "Black Panther" film beyond casting reports.
Over the weekend at San Diego Comic Con though, director Ryan Coogler spoke with Vulture and revealed the comic story arcs that influenced him and his co-screenwriter. Coogler says Ta-Nehisi Coates' recent best-selling run was a massive inspiration:
"Oh, I love it, man. I mean, [Coates] is my favorite writer right now in the world. Since being turned on to his work, I'm reading everything that he does. His nonfiction work, especially.
But what he's doing with 'Panther' is just incredible. You can really see his background as a poet in some of the dialogue. And what Brian Stelfreeze is doing with the visuals in that book. And some of the questions that it's asking. It's just inspiring for [co-screenwriter] Joe Robert Cole and myself."

I'm excited about Marvel Studios' Black Panther for a myriad of reasons, but if I had to choose a single one that exemplifies my excitement, it's the staggering amount of pure talent the company has recruited to be a part of this movie. Creed and Fruitvale Station Ryan Coogler is co-writing and directing, Chadwick Boseman is reprising his role as the title hero, and there's an amazing supporting cast that includes people like Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, and The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira. Pretty freaking awesome. After the events of Civil War, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Panther operates on his home turf.
Coogler is the man in charge on this film, and since fans always like to hear about how filmmakers respect the source material, I figured I'd share some quotes from a new interview he did with Vulture in which he talks about...

This past weekend was a big one for award winning director Ryan Coogler (Creed), since it was the first time the cast of his next project had assembled for the cameras. Taking the stage at the legendary San Diego Comic-Con during the Marvel Studios presentation, Coogler made the first introductions of the team of performers that will be delivering Black Panther to cinema screens in 2018.
There was rapturous reception for Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman, as well as his supporting cast members – Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o – which was followed by ample opportunity for Coogler to discuss the film with the press. In doing so, he confirmed that the greatest influence on his adaptation is the work of current Black Panther comic book writer, Ta-Nehisi Coates – whose stories are pencilled by Brian Stelfreeze, and inked by Laura Martin.

One of the seemingly insurmountable tasks filmmakers must encounter, when it comes to adapting a beloved comic book character to the big screen, is choosing which book, run, or continuity to pull from. Especially when it's a character that's been around for several decades, has had dozens of great iterations, and unique voices that have added their own touches to the character's legacy. Such is the case for Ryan Coogler, who's charged with bringing Marvel's Black Panther to the big screen.
In a chat with Vulture, he was asked about the comics that are influencing his cinematic take on the character- who was introduced to filmgoers earlier this year in the blockbuster smash Captain America: Civil War. Specifically, he was asked if the current run- written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and illustrated by Brian Stelfreeze- is factoring into his vision for the Black Panther movie.

While story details on the Black Panther solo film have been kept under wraps, director Ryan Coogler offered some insight over the weekend as to which comic stories the film would draw influence from. In an interview with Vulture, Coogler cites the recent best-selling run (written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, penciled by Brian Stelfreeze, and colored by Laura Martin) as a massive inspiration. “Oh, I love it, man. I mean, [Coates] is my favorite writer right now in the world. Since being turned on to his work, I’m reading everything that he does. His nonfiction work, especially. But what he’s doing with 'Panther' is just incredible. You can really see his background as a poet in some of the dialogue. And what Brian Stelfreeze is doing with the visuals in that book. And some of the questions that it’s asking. It’s just inspiring for [co-screenwriter] Joe Robert Cole and myself.

No DC Comics reviews for me this week as it seems Rebirth is taking a break (unless you need to go pick up those 2nd printings!-and you should!) So I will focus a little more on Marvel. Rumbles in the rumor community are suggesting Another reboot coming Marvel’s way real soon which promises to change the landscape of the Marvel Universe again! I’m guessing it will be the fallout from this terrible Civil War going on. Remember if there’s a book you want to have checked out, let me know and I will review it!

When I went to my local comic book shop on Wednesday morning, I did, as always, chat up my buddy on the other side of the counter. “Did you read Black Panther yet?” I asked him. “Is it any good?”
“Not yet,” he said.
“My editor wants me to write a review, and I’ve never read any other Black Panther comics,” I said.
“Don’t worry,” he said. “No one else has, either.”
Okay, I doubt that’s true. There have been comics with the Black Panther in them for five decades now. The character wouldn’t be used if he didn’t have a fan-base. That’s capitalism.
Speaking of, this new run of Black Panther has been getting tons of publicity. Marvel has done a terrific job, getting write-ups in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Wired, among others. That’s because the writer is Ta Nehisi Coates,...

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.

In September, it was announced that Ta-Nehisi Coates will be penning a Black Panther comic book issue for Marvel - news that was met with much excitement from fans of the superhero, fans of Coates (even if they weren't fans of Black Panther), and really just about everybody else it seemed. It was the kind of announcement that was almost universally welcomed, and I assume many are thus looking forward to seeing what Coates brings to the comic book franchise. “A Nation Under Our Feet,” the yearlong story line written by Mr. Coates and drawn by Brian Stelfreeze, is inspired by the 2003 book of the same title by Steven Hahn. It will find the hero dealing with a violent uprising in his country set off by a superhuman terrorist group called the People. Marvel faithful, the author of Between the World and Me, is your new Black Panther storyteller. But there's a difference between being an acclaimed novelist and a comic book writer. That difference is something Ta-Nehisi Coates acknowledges and ultimately hopes will lead to a refreshing reader experience. Marvel has already pre-committed to a year of the series. Said Coates, "It’s going to be a story that re-positions the Black Panther in the minds of readers. It really moves him forward." DC Comics has released four great variant covers that feature art inspired by the movie posters for Warner Bros. films. This is all part of a bigger plan from the comic publisher in which every month they will have a theme for variant covers that will be created and released. One of the hotter independent comics out there is Boom! Studios' Day Men. The book, written by Matt Gagnon with art by Brian Stelfreeze, is a unique take on the seemingly undying vampire genre: It tells the story of the men who handle the affairs of vampires while the sun is out and the bloodsuckers are napping. The first issue sold out of its initial 12,000-copy first printing and generated Hollywood interest, with Universal picking up the movie rights. The second issue also went to a second printing; Wednesday sees the arrival of the third issue. Preview Art: 'Vampire Diaries'

Day Men has been optioned for cinema by Universal Pictures.
Michael Alan Nelson, Matt Gagnon and Brian Stelfreeze's hit series has been picked up by Universal Pictures, according to Deadline.
The Boom! Studios comic book, which launched to critical acclaim last month, is a vampire series that offers an alternate take on the mythology.
"Vampires are like a metaphor for power, and that is what this story is about. Sure, there are fangs and blood, but the story is really about the lust for power and control," Stelfreeze told Comic Book Resources.
"Our main character, David, is at the epicentre of all these tidal forces. This story bears a stronger resemblance to Godfather than it does to Dracula."
Universal recently brought another comic book to the big screen in the shape of Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington's 2 Guns.
Watch a trailer for 2 Guns below:...

Universal has already launched one movie based on a Boom! Studios comic in the shape of Mark Wahlberg/Denzel Washington action caper 2 Guns. Now the studio is hoping to continue the run of success with an adaptation of the company’s Day Men.Created by Matt Gagnon, Michael Alan Nelson and Brian Stelfreeze, Day Men takes a look at the vampire tale from what all involved hope will be a unique angle: the titular group is a secret order of humans who protect the fang club as they slumber during the day. When war breaks out between two of the ancient vampire families, one of the men must intervene to stop the bloodshed. Universal is crossing its fingers that this one turns into a franchise a la Underworld or Blade, though it’ll have to tread carefully lest it end up lumbered with another failure like R.I.P.D.

Day Men #1, the first issue of the new vampire thriller written by Matt Gagnon and Michael Alan Nelson and drawn by industry legend Brian Stelfreeze is now being readied for a second pressing, with an alternative cover drawn by Stelfreeze.
Bleedingcool.com first broke the news, with the following message from Boom! Studios attached:
Day Men #1 is the first time Brian Stelfreeze has drawn interiors on a regular series since 2005. Brian’s work in the issue is some of the best of his career and the last time he drew interiors (Hardcore #1) the issue saw an immediate sell out and brisk reorder activity on the second issue. It’s also the latest in our run of original series like Polarity, Six-Gun Gorilla, Suicide Risk, and Clive Barker’s Next Testament that are garnering critical acclaim and brisk sales.

DC Comics continues its release of a year's worth of Watchmen prequels with Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach Deluxe Edition. This hardcover collection contains issues one through six of the Comedian title and issues one through four of Rorschach. Both books were penned by Brian Azzarello with art provided by J.G. Jones for Comedian and Lee Bermejo for Rorschach.
Before Watchmen: Comedian takes the reader back in time and gives insight into what makes Edward Blake tick. The Comedian crosses paths with Bobby Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, and other historical figures. You'll be shocked at some of the tragedies attributed to Mr. Blake.
Writer Brian Azzarello really steps out on a limb for Before Watchmen: Comedian. He spins complex and engaging tales which tie certain catastrophic world events to one individual. The entertaining ride features alternate historical takes which could be construed by many as patriotic and political heresy.
