- French orchestra conductor, he made important recordings of French composers with the CBSO of Birmingham where he was principal director before having the same job at the Sydney Symphonic Orchestra in 1979. He was before the director of the Monte Carlo Opera orchestra and the first director of what is now the Lyon Orchestra .
- He received a commission in the Foreign Legion, and served in Vietnam in 1945-46. He then entered the Paris Conservatoire and graduated in 1952 with a first prize in conducting. By 1954 he was becoming known in the music world, but was called back to the Foreign Legion and posted to Algeria.
- He was twice awarded the Croix de Guerre, and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
