“Bridgerton” Season 3 is here, and with it comes a new collection of string covers of iconic pop songs. The Shondaland Netflix series made a mark with its first season by packing the regency-era period story with string quartet covers of modern pop songs, and the trend continues in the new season that puts the focus on a romance between Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton).
“Bridgerton” Season 3 Part 1 also features the Netflix show’s first-ever original song: “All I Want” is written by Rogét Chahayed (Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More”), Wesley Singerman (Jennifer Lopez’s “Butterfly”), Taylor Dexter (Joji’s “Die for You”) and Nicole Cohen (Meghan Trainor’s “Sensitive”). Tori Kelly performs the song on the soundtrack, and the orchestral version was arranged by “Bridgerton” composer Kris Bowers.

Nirvana have paid tribute to Steve Albini by sharing the four-page letter he sent the band before agreeing to record their beloved final studio album, In Utero. Albini passed away yesterday (May 8th) at the age of 61.
The letter was posted on Nirvana’s official Twitter account, accompanied simply by the caption, “Steve Albini.” In the document, Albini outlines his steadfast philosophies, both regarding his approach to recording and his approach to business. Effectively, it’s Albini responding to Kurt Cobain’s request to produce the album by saying, “Only if we do it right.”
“I think the very best thing you could do at this point is exactly what you are talking about doing: bang a record out in a couple of days, with high quality but minimal ‘production’ and no interference from the front office bulletheads. If that is indeed what you want to do, I would love to be involved,...

Kid sisters Aixa (age 9) and Nirvana (age 11) are following in the footsteps of fellow music prodigy Nandi Bushell with their impressive TikTok channel of heavy metal cover songs.
Hailing from a musical family, Aixa and Nirvana performed alongside their parents in many of their early clips, but lately they’ve been tackling impressive renditions of songs by Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, and Iron Maiden all by themselves.
Nirvana handles guitar and vocals while Aixa lays down the rhythm behind a huge drum kit that threatens to engulf her. But for their age, the sisters already sound like seasoned vets.
Their cover of the Maiden classic “The Trooper” is a prime example and has already amassed over 22 million views on TikTok. While Aixa pounds away at the kit, Nirvana holds down the dynamic guitar lines and the vocals — a challenge that even Iron Maiden never attempted. She also works her pedal board...

Director Jun Robles Lana is a committed advocate of all queer aspects of life, which he has portrayed in his body of work with contrasting tones of voice, from the theatrical colorfulness of “Die Beautiful” to the dark realism of “Kalel, 15”. “Becky & Badette” sits without a doubt in the former group and, despite not being strictly (no pun intended) a gay story, is as camp as Christmas. A mix of classic comedy of errors and the familiar “high school reunion” genre, peppered with many innuendos and Filipino in-jokes, “Becky & Badette” is pure fun from start to end, and also one of those films you can imagine the cast and crew having a great time while shooting it.

College can be a time of great change in one's life: going it alone for the first time in training for the real world. The inclusion of the year in the title of Liu Jian's third feature “Art College 1994” is necessary in that it sets the scene for a changing time in China in terms of pop culture and, of course, art.
Art College 1994 is screening this Friday, April 26 in Metrograph, for an exclusive Week-Long NY Theatrical Run
Two roommates, Xiaojun (Dong Zijian) and Zhifei (Chizi) are art students who spend their days procrastinating, discussing the philosophy of art and the changing scene from classic to Western-influenced modern. Similarly, vocal student Hong (Papi) and piano student Lili (Zhou Dongyu) discuss their futures and possible marriages.

Courtney Love has never been shy when it comes to sharing her opinions about other people. Going all the way back to the early Nineties, the Hole singer has generated headlines by publicly trashing rock musicians, pop singers, movie stars, and even members of her own family. It’s a level of brutal candor you rarely see with public figures, but as Courtney Love told Rolling Stone in 1994, she simply doesn’t care what others think about her. “If people try to put me in the crazy box–’crazy fucking Courtney’–go ahead,...

In moviemaking, directors manage the extreme stuff. Matt Reeves, who made The Batman, etched some rough memories as well. He nearly said no to Warner Bros.’ Batman offer due to the film War from the Planets of the Apes.

Trevor Horn’s Echoes: Ancient & Modern finds the veteran musician and producer attempting to recontextualize some of the biggest pop hits of the past 40 years within the sounds of contemporary pop and electronic music. At best the results are bland, and at worst they exemplify Gen-x nostalgia at its most saccharine.
The album opens, rather unexpectedly, with a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank),” featuring a characteristically impassioned vocal performance by Tori Amos. The arrangement and production, however, are so sanitized, so slick and gussied up with melodramatic strings and synths, that the point of the song—its central irony and message about the dangers of generational alcoholism—is swallowed whole.
Horn imbues the album’s 11 songs with a grandiosity that quickly becomes flatulent, with big orchestral swells and heart-tugging keyboards. By the halfway point, the material all starts to blur together, as the majority of the songs...

Soon after Michael Azerrad first published the touchstone Nirvana biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana in 1993, his subject’s future was cut much too short. Now, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Azerrad is bringing the book up to date with The Amplified Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, a “super-expanded” version that’s out October 24th.
Come As You Are was already celebrated upon its release, written in close collaboration with Nirvana and even co-signed by Kurt Cobain as “the best rock book [he’d] ever read.” But just seven months after the biography was published, Cobain died by suicide, completely re-contextualizing the stories Azerrad had just told — and designating Come As You Are as the only book about Nirvana to ever feature original interviews with all three band members.

It seems like distant memory, a relic of a bygone era, but “punk cred” was once currency in certain corners of rock culture. To be perceived as inauthentic, cynical, or ambitious meant losing stock with a sizable chunk of the music press as well as your peers, and few bands felt the brunt of that as much as the Smashing Pumpkins. Indie icons from Stephen Malkmus to fellow Chicagoan Steve Albini criticized the band in songs and interviews, and even as recently as 2015, Kim Gordon called the group “in no way punk rock” in her memoir Girl in a Band.
Led by the mercurial Billy Corgan—or William Patrick Corgan, as he’s preferred in recent years—the Pumpkins started as a mopey goth band but gradually addended their love of the Cure and New Order with Black Sabbath-inspired riffs and psychedelic guitar. Their debut, 1991’s Gish, boasted bombastic production...

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is one of the most famous classic rock songs of the 1990s. During an interview, Amos revealed the song had a huge impact on her when she first heard it. In addition, she said the spirit of a piano had to convince her to cover “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
Tori Amos felt spirits told her Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ could sound different
During a 2021 interview with Stereogum, Amos said she was taken aback when she first saw the video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” “I think for most people when they heard it for the first time, I hadn’t heard anything like that,” she said. “There was an energy to this song.
“While I was sitting there in the silence, the piano kind of just showed herself to me,” she added. “There wasn’t a physical piano, but sort of the spirits of the piano.

Lana Del Rey’s “Say Yes to Heaven” references a John Lennon song. Notably, the tune recontextualizes the title of one of John’s most famous solo songs. In the same vein, Del Rey has paid homage to many other classic rock icons.

Looking through Del Rey’s catalog, she clearly has a healthy obsession with classic rock. After last week's devastating episode, what could "Yellowjackets" possibly have in store for us? Well, an incredibly somber opening of everyone at the cabin in mourning, set to "Something in the Way" by Nirvana. Shauna is too depressed to drink water and has been cradling her baby's corpse ever since. Taissa is trying her best to help her, but there's nothing that can help Shauna. That's not a critique of anyone in the cabin, by any means. Sometimes things are just awful, and we need to let them be awful. The snowstorm finally ends and the survivors can get some fresh air. Everyone is working together to shovel out the snow, and Shauna takes it upon herself to go on a solo walk and give her baby a final resting place.

As Ben Affleck once said as Batman, “We can rebuild. We can do better. We will. We have to.” And while he’ll get his chance to rebuild his interpretation of the character with this June’s The Flash, he once had the chance to expand on his own terms, with a standalone Batman movie all set up at Warner Bros. This, of course, was thrown down a well. Now, Affleck says it was his lack of confidence and direction that steered him away.
At SnyderCon this past weekend, Ben Affleck partook in a post-screening Q&a following Zack Snyder’s Justice League, letting the audience in on why he stepped away from his solo project. He said, in part, “There was a whole elaborate plan, which would take up too much time now, and some of which I may have forgotten. I always liked that character, and talked to Zack about that.

At the start of 2023, Nick Cave got angry. Angry at artificial intelligence for making a mockery of his career. Songwriting has long been associated with the inherent ability to be soulful. But now one Google search will throw up endless AI capable of making lyricism universal: Audoir for song lyrics and poetry, Jarvis for banishing writer’s block, and ChatGPT for anything, everything and more. To put it plainly, the 65-year-old singer had had enough of being simulated.
“With all the love and respect in the world, the track is bulls*** and a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human,” he responded in a blog post to a fan who’d sent him song lyrics “in the style of Nick Cave”, generated by ChatGPT.

"Succession" is a series about terrible people who do truly terrible things, but one of the most horrible moments came courtesy of the family patriarch, Logan Roy (Brian Cox). He's a loud, brash, angry man who likes to bludgeon others with his power. After dealing with the personal humiliation of a health scare in season 1, the brutal businessman decided to make a show of his strength by humiliating others during a very fancy dinner. All of the heavy hitters are there, including his sons Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin), his son-in-law Tom (Matthew Macfayden), and executives like Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) and Frank (Peter Friedman). They're on a hunting trip in Hungary and Logan is trying to figure out who might be operating as a mole, selling their secrets to the competition. Instead of simply talking to them about it, however, he decides to torture them with a little...

Most people would agree that Nirvana’s music embodies the spirit of Generation X, yet they never managed to write a song worthy of becoming number one. In fact, they never even breached the top five. However, one song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” managed to get close and went on to become the anthem of the grunge era.

The first trailer for "The Batman," which launched at the inaugural DC FanDome event back in 2020, might be the most incredible trailer I've ever seen. At least, the trailer that got me the most excited to see a film. From the somber-toned needle drop of Nirvana's "Something In The Way," you could feel every skeptic be collectively converted. This was positioned to be a Batman unlike any other, and things only got better from there with a teaser building toward a heart-stopping moment, when the music drops and Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight mercilessly beats a random miscreant into the ground.
I must have rewatched that trailer a few dozen times, and even found myself sucked into YouTube's reaction video community. Everything about this Batman seemed fresh yet faithful to the character's essence. At some point during my endless rewatching, I noticed there was more to the Nirvana...

I didn't really care for director Joe Wright's Peter Pan origin film Pan. In fact, I actually kind of hated it, which sucks because I wanted to like the movie! It was just one let down after another, though. One of the things that completely pulled me out of the movie was when Peter first shows up in Neverland and there's a crowd of slaves singing Nirvana's iconic song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with Blackbeard the Pirate. It was absolutely absurd, and there was no reason for it to be in the movie. From that point on, I just couldn't get into the movie, and it seemed to just get worse and worse. That's a shame because it really could have been a great film. It was just packed full of too many brain farts. If you haven't seen the film yet, I wouldn't waste your money. You...

Out of all the films in the recent epidemic of live-action adaptations of Disney animated classics, Pan was the “reimagining” (of whatever description we’ve cycled onto) that held the most promise. Not only is the J. M. Barrie source so whimsically imaginative that it’s ripe for reinterpretation, but Joe Wright’s film has been produced by Warner Bros., so unlike Alice In Wondefland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty And The Beast et al there wasn’t going to be the same slavish brand management working just beneath the surface and instead we’d get a piece driven by a singular vision.
Or so you’d think. In reality Pan is a jumble of half-heartedly realised, corporately-mandated ideas that show Hollywood at its worst.
For starters, in a bid to ride a wave of perceived popularity, the film inexplicably posits itself as a pseudo-prequel...

One summer a few years ago, Frances Bean Cobain worked as an intern in the New York offices of Rolling Stone. Frances – the daughter of Nirvana singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain and an executive producer of the new HBO documentary on his life, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck – was “a 15-year-old Goth kid, so stoked,” she recalls with a laugh during a recent interview for the cover story in our new issue. She remembers providing research assistance on a cover about the Jonas Brothers – and working in a cubicle across from...

No more guessing about what will appear on the 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana's In Utero — Rolling Stone can now reveal what the mammoth, 70-song, three-disc deluxe edition of the band's final masterpiece will contain: Two versions of In Utero (the original LP remastered, plus the album newly remixed) as well as more than 40 tracks of unreleased demos, rehearsals, live performances, B-sides, and a recently unearthed, never-before-heard Nirvana instrumental. The reissue will arrive September 24th.
Link: Rolling Stone’s List of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time: Nirvana
The first disc will feature a remastered version of the original, Steve Albini-produced In Utero, complete with the two tracks ("Heart Shaped Box," "All Apologies") that Scott Litt mixed for In Utero's final version. The oft-bootlegged abrasive Albini versions of those two songs will finally legally appear on the Iu reissue,...

This week sees the release of Shane Meadows's The Stone Roses documentary Made of Stone.
The film has won rave reviews, but has also drawn criticism for refusing to dig too deep into the backstage fallings-out of the combustible foursome - both past and present.
So when Digital Spy met up with the director and his producer Mark Herbert, we did a little digging of our own about the making of the film. Here's what they had to say.
It's very clear what the film is and isn't - did you have that in mind when you were there at the reunion announcement?
Shane: "It was more when we met the band for the first time."
Mark: "We're so excited about them getting back together. We've both seen [BBC Stone Roses doc] Blood on the Turntable, those documentaries. This is about how excited are we, how can we get this excitement? I think...

The year was 1993. I was watching Channel 4′s ‘The Word’ (it’s not a crime, honest!), dreaming of leaving the one horse town I lived in for University the following year when my speakers started crackling a sound that was like a locomotive rushing headlong towards me… ‘Supersonic’ by Oasis was blaring out and I knew I needed to follow these guys through thick and thin! Since then bands have come and gone – I’d continually listen to new sounds hoping to revisit that same raw energy feel I had that day, but nothing really had the same impact… Until last week! A good friend linked me You Tube Footage of ‘Lois and the Love’ playing live with the words ‘this sound is going to explode’. A handful of songs and twenty minutes later the goosebumps had returned and like those 19 years ago I was listening to a band...

Robert Pattinson has never really seemed content to be pigeonholed as that vampire guy, and though his recent attempts to be taken seriously as an actor haven.t quite taken hold, this might be the one to do it. Rumor has it that he.s playing Kurt Cobain. The source for this wild piece of gossip is The Sun, where they.ve played host to a wide assortment of mostly wrong rumors over the years (Cher as Catwoman anyone?). So treat this as wild speculation until there.s some sort of confirmation. That said, they claim Pattinson, better known as dreamboat vamp Edward Cullen, has landed the part of Nirvana.s lead singer in a biopic being made by David Fincher. The movie.s called All Apologies, a reference to this Nirvana song. The word here is that Pattinson got the part by basically annoying Courtney Love until she gave...

Most of Nirvana's back catalogue will reportedly be re-released on vinyl later this year. The first LP to be manufactured on vinyl will be Nevermind, which includes their seminal song 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. The Seattle band's Unplugged will also be remastered for resale by the Original Recordings Group, reports the BBC. Founder Monti Olson said he believes it is the first time Unplugged has (more)...

The breathtakingly stupid Weezer begs the question: Is this for real? Or are the over-processed hooks and lobotomized lyrics intentional self-parody? When Rivers Cuomo sings, "So turn off the TV, 'cause that's what others see, and movies are as bad as eating chocolate ice cream," is he a comic genius feigning creative bankruptcy? (C'mon, look at the crrrazy album cover!) Either way, it doesn't matter. If the so-called "Red Album" really is an elaborate goof on an all-too-forgiving fan base, that doesn't make Weezer's newest worst album any less insipid. Peaking early on Weezer's untouchable first two records, Cuomo now seems unable (or unwilling) to write a single heartfelt song. Instead, he substitutes smarm for sentiment on embarrassing dreck like "Heart Songs," paying tribute to everyone from Nirvana to Debbie Gibson (while mistakenly referencing a Tiffany song) with an air of insufferable, ain't-i-a-stinker smirkiness better suited for the likes...

Courtney Love is close to settling her court case with Universal Music without it going to trial. Sources claim talks between the former Hole rocker and her record company to settle the breach of contract case are progressing well and court hearings scheduled for next week could be called off. A source close to the case says, "The next hearing is 20 August, but I think it's going to be resolved." Another adds, "Negotiations are going well." The August 20 hearing was to set a trial date for the case, in which a unit of Universal claims that Love owes it five records and Love claims she was cheated out of substantial royalties. Industry analysts are closely monitoring the lawsuit, pitting the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain against the world's largest record group, as a pop artist-led movement challenging the terms of recording contracts gains momentum. In a separate bitter legal dispute in Seattle over the management of Nirvana's back catalogue, sources claimed Love has made a written settlement proposal. Love is suing the remaining members of Cobain's grunge band, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, over ownership of the group's recordings and songs. U2 singer Bono has been asked to testify for Love, while earlier this year Grohl and Novoselic questioned Courtney's mental stability. However, sources say that Love has recently made a written settlement proposal to the band's members. One says, "They have not responded yet, but lawyers for Love were told to expect a response soon."...
