You have to suspend a hefty amount of disbelief in order to enjoy the kiddy horror pic “Spirit Halloween: The Movie” since, yes, it is a feature-length commercial for the Spirit Halloween chainstore. This lightly likable action-adventure advert rehashes the formulaic story beats that its filmmakers cribbed from a variety of acknowledged influences, including Amblin productions like “Gremlins” and “The Goonies.”
You might also think of Robert Zemeckis’s two Amblin movies, “Back to the Future” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” given the presence of Christopher Lloyd, who makes a brief appearance as a vengeful ghost who hopes to possess a new human body. (Lloyd otherwise delivers his lines off-camera as a voice actor.)
Unfortunately, screenwriter Billie Bates and first-time director David Poag don’t have a knack for snappy dialogue or a general sensitivity for child and/or amateurish acting, which inadvertently puts way too much strain on the movie’s younger performers.

Roxwell Films has cast Olivia Luccardi, Eden Brolin, Sam Quartin, Owen Campbell and Billy Baldwin in the upcoming gritty horror-thriller “Candy Land.”
Written and directed by John Swab, the film follows a young disciple of a religious cult, Remy (Luccardi), who stumbles upon a rag-tag group of truck stop sex workers known as “lot lizards” who take her under their wing. As Remy immerses herself in this new underground world, her true colors are revealed in a way that neither her former family nor new family could have ever imagined. The film has commenced principal photography in Southwestern Montana. It will also star Guinevere Turner, Virginia Rand and Brad Carter.

On the face of things, The Devil To Pay could just be described as a revenge thriller but it does thankfully have more to it than many other films in that genre. After the disappearance of her husband, a farmer in an isolated Appalachian community fights to save her son when the matriarch of the oldest family on the mountain demands a payment of a debt.
In less capable hands this could be a very run-of-the-mill thriller but writers and directors Lane and Ruckus Skye (also writers of this year’s Becky) make things much more interesting. The film runs along at a good pace – coming in at a little over eighty minutes – and blends a great mix of drama with the occasional action and horror but always hard-hitting. Despite its uncompromising style,...

‘Emperor’ Review: A Runaway Slave Joins the Raid on Harpers Ferry in Forgotten Tale of Black Heroism
As statues to Confederate heroes are torn down around the country, the question of whom to honor in their place poses an intriguing challenge — one that writer-director Mark Amin seems to have anticipated with his abolitionist adventure movie “Emperor.” Essentially a filmic monument to a scarcely documented American hero, “Emperor” tells the virtually unknown story of Shields Green, a descendant of African royalty who was born into slavery and later escaped, making it to freedom before risking his life in the attack on Harpers Ferry.
When history books speak of that famous raid, they tend to focus on John Brown, the white militant who planned the action hoping it would incite a slave uprising in the South — which gives an accurate but incomplete picture. “Emperor” re-centers the telling, broadening this early “white savior” story to include the Black men who joined the cause — or, in the case of Frederick Douglass,...

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

Maika Monroe, Maggie Grace and Bonnie Bedelia star in The Scent Of Rain And Thunder - an unmissable indie thriller...
There are some movies that come at us with all the subtlety of a charging rhino. There are others that encourage us to lean in, listen closely, and absorb every detail. The Scent Of Rain And Lightning, a mystery-thriller based on a novel by Nancy Pickard, falls into the latter category - which is one reason why it's such a must-see movie.
Told with intimate close-ups and a dreamlike blurring of the past and present, The Scent Of Rain And Lightning tells the story of Jody Linder (Maika Monroe), an Oklahoman 20-something whose psychological wounds are reopened when a lank-haired, loathsome character named Billy (Brad Carter) is suddenly released from prison. When Jody was still a child, her parents were both brutally murdered, and the finger of suspicion quickly fell on Billy.

Earlier this year, you may have heard of a Tribeca Film Festival drama that starred Faith Hill as a trailer trash mom in the Deep South. It’s true, but that’s not really all that “Dixieland” is about, though having a big country pop star in your movie probably doesn’t hurt. A movie that details cycles of violence, crime, and impoverished circumstances with a Romeo and Juliet-like narrative, “Dixieland” is the directorial debut of Hank Bedford — a former assistant to David O. Russell, Bennett Miller, and Tarsem Singh. Read More: Tribeca Review: ‘Dixieland’ Starring Riley Keough, Faith Hill & Chris Zylka The movie stars Chris Zylka from “The Leftovers” and Riley Keough from “Mad Max: Fury Road” and an actress you’re probably going to know a little bit better in 2016 thanks to leading her own show: Starz’s “The Girlfriend Experience,” from executive producer and creator Steven Soderbergh.

When Scott Cooper’s Black Mass was announced, many criticized the mobster drama for seemingly glorifying the reign of terror that James “Whitey” Bulger carried out across the city of Boston for years even while working as an FBI informant to take down the Italian mob. And, unfortunately, the first full trailer for the pic likely won’t do much to set their minds at ease.
Though Johnny Depp’s transformative portrayal of the gangster certainly paints him as an unsavory, sadistic character, the preview makes the mistake of soundtracking the gangster’s apparent invincibility and penchant for brutality with Yelawolf’s “Till It’s Gone,” a pulse-pounding track that romanticizes the dangerous nature of his criminal lifestyle.
Still, though Black Mass isn’t looking like the most sensitive treatment of Bulger’s story, especially given that the families of many of his victims still grieve and suffer today as...

Warner Bros. showed some footage this week at CinemaCon; it looks like Depp is going overboard with the makeup as usual, aging as he goes and wearing strange contact lenses as Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger. For me, that pulls you out of a movie that seems reminiscent of the Martin Scorsese classic "Goodfellas." The sprawling cast is strong: Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kevin Bacon, Rory Cochrane, David Harbour, Dakota Johnson, , Julianne Nicholson, James Russo, Adam Scott, Corey Stoll, Juno Temple, W. Earl Brown, Bill Camp, Brad Carter and Jeremy Strong. The screenplay by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, based on the book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, centers on the Whitey Bulger empire in South Boston, from the 1970s to the 90s. For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.
Nine Warner Bros. Actor Brad Carter has been around for a long time and you’ve likely seen him getting beat up or killed in most major television programs over the past few years. His meatiest role to date was his breakout performance as inmate Charlie Lange on HBO’s True Detective. I spoke with Carter about his brain surgery that was broadcast live on the internet to millions, his current role on Sons of Anarchy, Black Mass with Johnny Depp and much more. In that great episode, which I consider the last truly superb hour of that series, Dexter Morgan breaks his serial killer code to murder a man in a bar who pushes him over the edge. Dexter winds up smashing a man's head to smithereens in a bathroom brawl. That...

Spoiler alert: In the Oct. 14 episode of Sons of Anarchy, "Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em," Leland (Brad Carter) and the Aryan Brotherhood made a return appearance to have a fistfight with Samcro, view the corpses of the ambushed East Dub crew, and taste-test the Mayan heroin that Tully (Marilyn Manson) is going to now distribute in Stockton under Jax's (Charlie Hunnam) new plan. Viewers may recognize the Texas-born, Georgia-raised Carter, who'd auditioned to play an Irish biker on Sons years ago, from HBO's True Detective—he played Ab inmate Charlie Lange. "Fortunately and unfortunately, these kind of characters seem to be in my wheelhouse.

Over the course of three episodes, "True Detective" has been a steadily ratcheting the tension as Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) track down a serial killer that is haunting the surreal South like a monster. Last week's "The Locked Room" concluded with a goosebump-raising closing shot of the wanted, parole-breaking ex-convict Reggie Ledoux as he prowled across some as yet discovered landscape, as the cops tried to find him. He's the man Martin and Rust think is good for a number of murders, and kicking off "Who Goes There," they're on the hunt. Their first stop is with Dora Lange's ex-husband, Charlie (Brad Carter), and unlike their first conversation with him, this one has results. Charlie used to roll with Reggie, and moreover shared with him some Polaroids Dora had taken for Charlie to look at when he went inside. He showed them to Reggie, whom Charlie admits was bonafide crazy,...
