Women filmmakers hit a milestone with this year’s 2024 Oscar nominations.
For the first time in history, three of the 10 movies nominated for best picture — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives” — were directed by a female auteur, the most recognized in the Academy Awards’ 96-year history.
The other best picture nominees are: “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppehneimer,” “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.”
Before this year’s best picture nominees, 591 movies were nominated by the Academy. Only four years have included two films directed by women among the best picture nominees: Lone Scherfig’s “An Education” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” (2009), Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right” and Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone” (2010), Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” (2020) and Siân Heder’s...

To have a film centered on a Chinese American family, and more specifically the conflict between an immigrant mother and her queer daughter, win the Oscar for Best Picture is undeniably a sign of progress in the movement to get the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize more art that comes from people from marginalized backgrounds.
On Sunday night, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” made Academy Awards history on multiple fronts, most of all with lead Michelle Yeoh becoming the first Asian woman to ever win Best Actress. Her victory ended a 21 year streak of all white winners since African American actress Halle Berry became the first woman of color to win the award in 2002. Similarly, her co-star Ke Huy Quan became the second Asian man to win Best Supporting Actor, nearly 40 years after “The Killing Fields” star Haing S. Ngor became the first.

If “Women Talking” take home the Best Picture statuette at next year’s 95th Oscars, Frances McDormand would become only the second woman to win at least two Academy Awards trophies in the category. We say ”at least” because should the movie win the top prize, it would mean that fellow “Women Talking” producer Dede Gardner had earned her third.
In fact, Gardner has a pair of chances this year to add more Best Pic gold to her bio: “Women Talking” and “She Said.” Her previous triumphs in the category came in 2014 for “12 Years a Slave” and in 2017 for “Moonlight.”

President Donald Trump isn’t pleased with this year’s Oscar wins.
Thursday night, at a rally in Colorado, Trump, 73, mocked both Korean film Parasite and Brad Pitt for their victories.
“The winner is a movie from South Korea. What the hell was that all about? We’ve got enough problems with South Korea, with trade. And after all that, they give them best movie of the year?” Trump said, The Hill and Variety reported.
Trump’s rant was also shared by Vox journalist Aaron Rupar.
In the clip, Trump is heard saying, “Can we get Gone with the Wind back?...

Talk about a win to remember!
When the 2020 Oscars took place earlier this month, just about everyone watching was thrilled to see Parasite take home the award for Best Picture. Among the most excited was one of the film’s younger stars, 10-year-old Jung Hyeon-jun who played Park Da-song in the South Korean film.
Jung was not in attendance during the ceremony but instead watched the Oscars from home in South Korea where he learned of the historic win as his family recorded his gleeful reaction.
“I thought it would be awesome to get it, and we actually won the award!

Hipster film folk love a good black comedy, and one that doesn’t hit too close to home can become a big hit. Bong Joon-ho has been making smart, clever movies for years, and this intense satire hit pay dirt, commercially. Neon played their Oscar season cards beautifully as well, with the personable director seemingly omnipresent at festivals and on NPR. The film itself? I find it wickedly clever, yet fundamentally humanist — it’s not mean-spirited.

I was rooting hard for Parasite all throughout Oscar night. When Jane Fonda proudly said Parasite I let out a “F**K Yeah!” that woke up my cat. The cast and crew all make it to the stage to give their speeches. I didn’t expect Bong Joon Ho to give another speech because he already seemed so adorably overwhelmed from giving three others. Producer Kwak Sin Ae spoke instead. She had her translator (who has become a staple of this awards season) speak to the audience.
We never imagined this would happen, we are so happy. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now. I express my deepest gratitude and respect for all the members of the Academy for making this decision.”
Then it happens. The lights dim down and the audience groaned in protest at the speech being cut short.
