How the tragic death of his beloved sister, Clare, gave Greg Wise a new outlook on navigating the end of life
Stepping inside Greg Wise’s home on a wet and windy day, he bursts into host mode. A cappuccino is made, pastries are served and – on noticing I’m a bit rain-lashed – a crackling fire is built. It’s incredibly homely, this place he shares with his wife, Emma Thompson. The kitchen is a riot of dangling pans, the living area is populated with fabric animals, and there’s a huge, inviting sofa to sink into – although Wise prefers not to use it. Things couldn’t be more cosy, which perhaps makes it all the stranger that we’re about to embark on an hour-long chat about death.

“The Crown” series finale premiere in London on Tuesday evening brought out the cast and creatives behind the hit Netflix show as well as a smattering of other familiar faces keen to catch a sneak peek of the last-ever episode.
Imelda Staunton, who plays the last iteration of Queen Elizabeth II in the fifth and sixth seasons of the series, led the red carpet. Despite the chaos around her — from reporters clamoring to ask questions to photographers shouting her name — the star told Variety her focus had always been on the character.
“I don’t look at maelstrom,” she said. “It doesn’t interest me. I just look at the script, look at the part, go to work.”
Newcomer Meg Bellamy, who joined the series as a college-age Kate Middleton for Season 6, was more emotional about getting the part, which also happened to be her first ever professional acting job.

Emma Thompson has said that she made herself “seriously ill” while campaigning for the Oscars.
The British actor is the only person to win an Oscar in both acting and screenwriting categories; the former for Howard’s End in 1992 and the latter for Sense and Sensibility in 1995.
But in a new interview, Thompson admitted that she’d “really hated” campaigning for the awards.
“I get very distraught and actually, both times I had to do the Oscars I got ill, quite seriously ill, before and during it,” she told the Radio Times podcast. “I just found the pressure of it too much, the glare too much. It’s not something I like very much.
“It’s sort of astonishing, and you go, ‘Ooh, ahh’ and then you think, ‘God, I really want to lie down and go in a dark room and just please don’t ask me any questions...

“We really do have to take it with a massive pinch of salt. To think sensibly about love and the way it can grow is essential,” Thompson continued.
“Long-term relationships are hugely difficult and complicated,” the actress added. “If anyone thinks that happy ever after has a place in our lives, forget it.”

Emma Thompson revealed that she was “utterly blind” to her ex-husband Kenneth Branagh’s affairs with actresses like Helena Bonham Carter.
“I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set,” she told The New Yorker. “What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.”
Thompson and Branagh first met on the set of the series Fortunes of War, and they were married from 1989 to 1995. In 1994, Branagh began a relationship with Bonham Carter while they filmed the Frankenstein movie together.

Emma Thompson has said she was “utterly, utterly blind” to the fact Kenneth Branagh was having an affair with Helena Bonham Carter.
Thompson, 63, and Branagh, 61, met in 1987 when filming the series Fortunes of War. They were married two years later in 1989.
The couple divorced in 1995. It emerged that Branagh had been having an affair with Harry Potter star Helena Bonham Carter, 56, who he had starred opposite in his 1994 film Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
In an interview with The New Yorker, Thompson reflected on the filming of Sense and Sensibility, for which she won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
While shooting the film in 1995, the actor’s marriage to Branagh had ended. They had not yet made news of their split public.
The New Yorker writer states that Thompson was “humiliated, in part by her own stupidity” by the affair Branagh had with Carter.

Writer-director Emily Harris’s version of Le Fanu’s vampire novella adds a feminist focus on repression but sparks don’t fly
This revisionist adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1871 vampire novella joins Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights and Lady Macbeth in the newish tradition of bonnet-free literary adaptations: modern-feeling period films abandoning coy glances for earthy passions and marriage fantasy fulfilment for a harsher portrait of domestic life for women in the past. Le Fanu’s book was the inspiration for Dracula’s harloty wives in the 70s Hammer films, but with a new-school feminist spin writer-director Emily Harris strips away the vampirism to focus on sexuality and repression. It’s a smart move, but her creepily atmospheric film is let down by some awkward dialogue and a weirdly bloodless lack of intimacy.

While the favorites for the Drama Guest Actor Emmy contain a bevy of former Emmy winners, one of the leading contenders has yet to win his first golden trophy.
For decades, renowned British actor Charles Dance has been a familiar face on American television screens, particularly for his dastardly turn on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” Having achieved fame onstage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Dance achieved worldwide acclaim as Sgt. Guy Perron in the television miniseries “The Jewel in the Crown,” considered by many critics and viewers at the time to be the gold standard among miniseries. “Jewel” is merely one of the highlights in Dance’s four-decade career in film and television, the most notorious credit being his portrayal of Tywin Lannister, who was ignominiously killed by his dwarf son Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) while sitting on the toilet in “Game of Thrones.”

"After we die... what then?" Film Movement has released an official Us trailer for the indie fantasy drama film titled Carmilla, which is "inspired by" Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic Gothic vampire novella of the same name. Described as "a moody, atmospheric, coming-of-age love story steeped in eerie mystery and inspired by the vampire story." This originally premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year, and we featured the original UK trailer earlier this year. Starring Hannah Rae as a 15-year-old girl who gets entangled in a love affair when a carriage crash brings a new guest to the house. This also stars Tobias Menzies, Jessica Raine, Greg Wise, and Devrim Lingnau. Featuring some lovely cinematography by Dp Michael Wood. This trailer starts out quite lovely and quiet, but gets seriously intense in the last 30 seconds. Whew! Enjoy. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ new poster) for Emily Harris' Carmilla,...

When Emma Thompson first read the pilot for the HBO limited series “Years and Years,” which tracks a loving but dysfunctional Manchester family from 2019 to 2034, it read like science fiction. The upcoming holiday (in just a couple of days) may prove difficult to observe. Memorial Day was established (formerly Decoration Day) to remember and honor those who died while serving in the armed forces. But with the current crisis, group gatherings are discouraged (in some areas they’re outright banned for more than ten people), and many might feel unsafe (social distancing and all that) at cemeteries, One option could be this new film that will be available for home viewing (since most cinemas are still shuttered), a comedy/drama that’s inspired by true events (the main characters are composites while others are fictional). It’s all about a group of women, spouses of soldiers, who thought that a great way to honor those away (and support those behind) was to raise their voices in song. This new film is about a choir that inspired several groups around the world,...

In these times of pandemic isolation it’s no crime to look for the film equivalent of comfort food. Military Wives, though deeply reliant on formula and wrapped in a blanket of bland, fits the bill. Available on VOD this week, the film is a fictionalized take on the true tale of the wives and lovers of British soldiers serving in Afghanistan who formed a women’s choir to sing out their joys and fears. Their stories became a hit series on the BBC and spawned a No. 1 song, “Wherever You Are,...

This crowd-pleasing comedy drama from the director of The Full Monty hits all the right notes
“Great music doesn’t happen when things are perfect,” says Sharon Horgan’s brassy Lisa in this formulaic yet ultimately winning British dramedy. “It happens when you care.” That’s a truism that could equally be applied to the film itself, an “inspired by real events” crowd-pleaser from The Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo. Military Wives may indeed be far from perfect (to say it flirts with cliche is to understate its enthusiastic commitment to contrivance), yet for all its manipulative flaws, this goodhearted tale of the partners of service personnel finding musical strength together works the kind of movie magic that will leave you laughing and crying, often against your better judgment.

(This interview contains some major spoilers for “Last Christmas,” so if you haven’t seen the film and want to go in blind, you might not want to read this.)
It’s been a long time since a Christmas movie has caused the sort of uproar that “Last Christmas” was received with when it hit theaters back in November. But it’s also unusual for a Christmas movie to rock the boat the way Paul Feig’s film did.
The issue at hand, I think, is that “Last Christmas” was marketed as what appeared to be a standard romantic comedy with Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. But, in the end, it really defied that label and went off in a direction that caught pretty much everyone off guard with a huge twist in the third act that recontextualizes everything that came before.

"This choir isn't about singing for ourselves... it's about being heard." Bleecker Street Films has unveiled an official trailer for a "feel-good crowd-pleaser" film titled Military Wives, the latest film from the British director of The Full Monty. Despite the reality TV-sounding name, this is really a heartfelt dramedy about a group of women whose partners are away serving in the military in the Middle East. They come together and form a choir, and quickly find themselves at the center of a media sensation and global movement. The cast is lead by Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan, with an ensemble including Emma Lowndes, Gaby French, Lara Rossi, Amy James-Kelly, Jason Flemyng, and Greg Wise. This doesn't seem so bad! I was ready to write it off, especially with that title, but it actually has quite a bit of inspiration to offer. Here's the full official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Cattaneo's Military Wives,...

"You keep to my rules, and all will be well... I won't let the devil into this house." Republic Film Dist. has released an official trailer for an indie fantasy drama called Carmilla, adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic Gothic vampire novella of the same name. A moody, atmospheric, coming-of-age love story steeped in eerie mystery and inspired by the vampire story. This premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year, and played at a few other fests, arriving in theaters this spring. Starring Hannah Rae as a 15-year-old girl who gets entangled in a love affair when a carriage crash brings a new guest to the house. Also stars Tobias Menzies, Jessica Raine, Greg Wise, and Devrim Lingnau. Featuring some lovely cinematography by Dp Michael Wood. This definitely looks like a moody, candle-lit erotic thriller with some sensual moments. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Emily Harris' Carmilla,...

The story of Jack Parsons has come to a premature end on television. CBS All Access has cancelled its Strange Angel TV series so there won't be a third season.
A historical period drama, Strange Angel stars Jack Reynor, Rupert Friend, Bella Heathcote, Peter Mark Kendall, Peter Mark Kendall, Michael Gaston, Greg Wise, Angus Macfadyen, Laine Neil, and Veronica Osorio. Based on the book by George Pendle, the series is inspired by the true story of Caltech's Jack Parsons (Reynor) and his experiences in the worlds of science, science fiction, and the occult. CBS All Access has canceled its fact-based dark drama series, Strange Angel, after two seasons.
Strange Angel just had its proverbial wings clipped by its platform home, CBS All Access, which has canceled the historically-based, lasciviously occult, television series, leaving no room for a third season.
CBS All Access’s cancelation of Strange Angel after two seasons on the premium streaming service, as reported by THR, marks only the second time in the platform’s five-year history that an original series has been met with cancelation, with the lone precedent stemming back to its December 2018 cancelation of drama One Dollar. However, it won’t be an isolated incident, with the merger of CBS and Viacom expected to unleash a deluge of new original content for CBS All Access, which will lead to a statistically-inevitable share of casualties.

Stars: Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, Boris Isakovic, Emma Thompson, Maxim Baldry, Michelle Yeoh, Bilal Zafar, Patti LuPone, Lydia Leonard, Rob Delaney, Peter Serafinowicz | Written by Greg Wise, Emma Thompson, Bryony Kimmings | Directed by Paul Feig
Last Christmas doesn’t just leave you asking what went wrong, it leaves you asking what went really, really, really wrong. With Paul Feig as the director, Emma Thompson as the writer and Emilia Clarke as the lead it had everything it needed to be a Christmas classic. In the end it’s another classic disaster.
The plot, as little as there is, tells us the story of Kate, played by Emilia Clarke. Kate is a young woman stuck in a rut of bad decisions, who works as one of Santa’s elves for a department store. When she meets Tom (Henry Golding) her life takes a new turn and she finds a new lease of life.

It also starred Rupert Friend, Bella Heathcote, Peter Mark Kendall, Michael Gaston, Greg Wise, Rade Šerbedžija, Zack Pearlman and Keye Chen.

Roland Emmerich’s WWII epic “Midway” is heading for the No. 1 slot at the box office with an estimated $17.5 million from 3,242 domestic locations.
The number marks a slight drop from Friday’s estimate in the $20 million-plus range, but is still significantly ahead of early tracking’s $13 million prediction. “Midway” is on track to come out ahead of Stephen King adaptation “Doctor Sleep,” which is looking at around $13.5 million from 3,855 North American sites, though estimates are still fluid until final tallies on Monday.
The war film, timed to release with Veterans Day, took in $6.34 million on Friday. Lionsgate is distributing “Midway,” whose star-studded cast includes Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Ed Skrein, Nick Jonas, Patrick Wilson, Darren Criss, Aaron Eckhart, Mandy Moore, and Dennis Quaid. Emmerich directed the film, which recreates the 1942 Battle of Midway, from Wes Tooke’s script. It’s one of the most expensive indie movies ever made, with a $100 million budget.

We all may know someone who’s more than a little “Noel-nutty”. They’re the folks in a frenzy as retailors pack up the pumpkins and bring out the wreaths. And they probably overload on nogg as they “zone out” on all those winter holiday flicks that clog a couple of the basic cable TV channels. Ah, but what’s this at the multiplex, barely a week into November? Did one of those offerings slither out of its cage over at Hallmark? Perhaps, except this has a rather interesting list of talents. It’s got a story and script co-written by Oscar-winner Emma Thompson, and it’s directed by one of the current kings of raunchy comedies (this time minus his muse Melissa McCarthy), Paul Feig. What kind of tinsel and fluff stocking stuffer have these two diverse talents created? Well, it’s one that takes its title (and much...

A sure signal of the coming holiday season at the movies is the arrival of unpretentious lighter fare like Last Christmas. This year’s offering falls in line with the easy charms of such previous entries as The Holiday and Almost Christmas, but also arrives with a somewhat affably strange lump of ingredients. Inspired by the Wham! song and packed with a slew of George Michael songs, the Paul Feig-directed film is co-written by Emma Thompson (with Bryony Kimmings and Greg Wise) and offers up timely context within a classic romcom structure. It’s a sugar high of a movie that remains grounded in some substance, not exactly tidy but satisfyingly more than meets the eye.

It’s nice to have a Christmas movie in theaters. It’s also nice to watch two lead performers get to know each other on screen, and appear to genuinely enjoy each other’s company. With Last Christmas, directed by Paul Feig, viewers get two-for-one. Starring Emilia Clarke as Kate and Henry Golding as the mysterious do-gooder who has captured her eye, there exists a light-hearted energy throughout that is seasoned with a bit of complexity. Considering the film is co-written by Emma Thompson (from a story by her and husband Greg Wise), this is no surprise.
Kate works as an “Elf” at a Christmas shop in London, her tough-but-fair boss taking on the brand-conscious name “Santa” and constantly criticizing her employee of being lazy. There’s at least one person not interested in seeing Paul Feig’s holiday-themed romantic comedy “Last Christmas” spoiled all over the internet: star Emilia Clarke. When trailers for the new film arrived in mid-August, social media users and entertainment journalists alike picked up on more than a few hints that not everything was as it seemed to be in the film, which sees Clarke playing a prickly Londoner who is pursued by a handsome (and slightly odd) stranger in the form of Henry Golding. Outlets published entire screeds attempting to unpack what was really happening in the Emma Thompson-scripted film and Twitter lit up with entertainment obsessives casting about their own theories about a possible twist.

Kate (Emilia Clarke) is in a rut. Long ago, as a girl growing up in Yugoslavia circa 1999, she was a songbird who could turn George Michael’s “Heal the Pain” into a transcendental choral experience. Decades later, she’s a young woman who drinks away her pain in London’s pubs and manages to alienate her most loyal friends. Don’t get her started about her family: Dad (Boris Isakovic) was a former lawyer who now drives a cab; Mom (co-writer Emma Thompson) browbeats everyone; her sister (Lydia Leonard) isn’t speaking to her.

Ever since the very first Trailer for Last Christmas was released, something felt…off. The story shown just seemed to be hiding a little bit of information. This led to subsequent analysis and over analysis of the little bit of footage, leading to wild theories about what could be happening within this holiday season romantic tale. Well, now that I’ve seen it and the embargo has lifted, I can report that while there is a degree of accuracy to some theories, it’s also a disservice to an otherwise fairly serviceable film. In fact, the plot itself probably would have been better off keeping things simple. At least there’s George Michael music throughout the flick, right? Alas, it’s not nearly enough. The movie is a romantic holiday story, following a troubled young woman. For Kate (Emilia Clarke), bad choices are a way of life, only compounded by...

In recent years, the romantic comedy has taken a sabbatical, at least from the big screen (it seems to have adopted temporary legal-resident status on Netflix). Yet it’s clear that one can point to the occasional exception: the puckishly delightful and moving 2017 indie hit “The Big Sick,” or last year’s “Crazy Rich Asians,” which was such an immersive cross-cultural fairy tale of love, class, and global sci-fi-surreal decor that the shimmering romance at its center was just one of its many entrancements. Even in their success, though, you couldn’t say that either of those movies exactly re-opened the floodgates of romantic comedy. So what are love-starved moviegoers to do?
On paper, “Last Christmas” would seem to be just what the holiday rom-com doctor ordered. It’s got two terrific stars: Emilia Clarke, from “Game of Thrones,” a wild card of an actress who plays the likably slovenly and messed-up Kate,...

People don’t generally think of a musician’s Christmas albums as their best work — unless that musician is named Bing or Mariah — but fans still enjoy that rush of holiday familiarity and sentimentality. So think of “Last Christmas” as director Paul Feig’s Christmas album; it won’t be the first comedy anyone thinks about in his accomplished filmography, but viewers might find themselves reaching for it come December all the same.
I’ve seen more than my share of Christmas films, and “Last Christmas” scratches a lot of my holiday-movie itches while also delivering what I want from a Paul Feig movie. Those cameos, incidentally, are a Feig tradition going all the way back to his last Christmas movie, 2006’s underappreciated “Unaccompanied Minors.”

Emilia Clarke looks back fondly at her eight seasons on HBO’s epic fantasy series, “Game of Thrones,” and realizes that playing Daenerys taught her something vital about herself: “She taught me about lady balls,” the four-time Emmy nominee said.
No question about it, Daenerys became a formidable conqueror and ruler by the time the show ended earlier this year, and Clarke is the first to acknowledge that.
“She taught me what it feels like to be in a room and be heard. She wielded such power, calmness and such poise,” Clarke said in a new interview with The Daily Telegraph.

As if a Christmas-themed rom-com starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding couldn't get anymore adorable, Last Christmas is getting a book companion!
While the film follows the misadventures of Clarke's Kate, a struggling singer who has experienced a life-threatening illness in the past and currently works at a Christmas shop (she spends most of the film dressed as an adorable elf), the book bearing the same name is actually a collection of personal essays about the meaning of Christmas. Curated and introduced by Dame Emma Thompson (who also stars in the upcoming film) and her husband, Greg Wise, the book features the writing of famous faces like Meryl Streep, Olivia Colman, and, of course, Emilia Clarke. Also included, the not-so-famous faces of people who have experienced homelessness, political refugees, and volunteers.
While we have no doubt the Last Christmas film will be utterly delightful, the companion book is sure to...
