1990s sketch series The Fast Show is hitting the road for a 30th anniversary tour around the UK, and here are the details.
When talking about British comedy in the 1990s, it is impossible to overstate the impact of The Fast Show. With a plethora of characters that have successfully stood the test of time, the series itself stands up remarkably well to repeat viewings.
Although many of the characters were well known for their catchphrases – has anybody ever been measured up for a suit in the last thirty years without being able to resist the temptation to say “suits you sir! – there was a darker edge to the writing.
A good example is Rowley Birkin, a Paul Whitehouse character who is usually played as a babbling alcoholic. The final episode of series two features an unusually restrained performance, where the audience stops laughing and are stunned into silence as...

Updated 07:49 am P.T. with Piers Morgan comments: Prince Harry has been awarded £140,000 in damages after a court ruled he was the victim of phone hacking by Mirror Group Newspapers. The High Court also ruled that Piers Morgan, who used to edit The Daily Mirror, knew about phone hacking, a claim Morgan has denied.
The Duke of Sussex alleged that he was the victim of more than 140 instances of illegal news gathering and the trial tested the evidence regarding 33 of those stories. In the past few minutes, a judge has said that 15 of these 33 sample articles were “the product of phone hacking … or the product of other unlawful information gathering.”
Harry has been awarded more than half of the £320,000 he was seeking, roughly equating to the number of articles that were found to be in breach. The Duke has been joined in his legal action by former Coronation Street actress Nikki Sanderson,...

Death Of Stalin
The Death of Stalin, 11.15pm, Great Movies, Monday, December 11
Armando Iannucci may have cut his teeth on biting satire about British politics but he proves just as adept at rattling the absurdity of Russian state roulette as the politburo descends into farce after the demise indicated by his film's title. Like a Grand National of Russian politics, everyone is jockeying for position, including the sharp-witted Kruschev (Steve Buscemi), chief of police Beria (Simon Russell Beale) alongside Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), who is not the sharpest tool in the box, and Molotov (Michael Palin), who has really had enough of all this. The cast, which also includes Jason Isaacs, Andrea Riseborough and Paul Whitehouse, runs as wide and deep as the humour is cutting and pointed. The vantablack of satire.

Paul Whitehouse has said he’s not normally as angry as he appears on Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
The BBC Two series follows Whitehouse and fellow comedian Bob Mortimer on various fishing trips around the UK as the pair discuss their respective heart problems.
Whitehouse is a keen angler and often gets frustrated with Mortimer’s lack of technique – the former’s constant reminders of “Don’t wind!” has become the show’s unofficial catchphrase.
Appearing on Kathy Burke’s podcast Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake, Whitehouse was asked if he was “surprised” at how angry he got at his colleague “because you don’t half snap at him sometimes”, Burke said.
“I’m not an angry person Kathy, you know that,” the Harry and Paul star responded.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you lose your temper,” Burke confirmed.

Classic sitcom Fawlty Towers is set to be rebooted by John Cleese and his daughter, Camilla Cleese.
The Monty Python’s Flying Circus actor, who starred in the original series as irascible hotel owner Basil Fawlty, is making the new series in collaboration with Spinal Tap filmmaker Rob Reiner.
Both Cleese and his daughter will write and star in the revival, which is currently in development.
According to Deadline, the series will “explore how Cleese’s over-the-top, cynical and misanthropic Basil Fawlty navigates the modern world”.
“John Cleese is a comedy legend. Just the idea of working with him makes me laugh,” Reiner said.
As well as Reiner, Michele Reiner, Derrick Rossi, and Matthew George will all serve as executive producers.
Speaking to the outlet, John Cleese praised George’s “understanding of the ‘creative process’” and claimed that their initial meeting had yielded “one of the best creative sessions I...

Jeremy Clarkson has been shown apologising to Oxfordshire villagers for calling them morons in an episode of Clarkson’s Farm season two.
In episode three of the new season, which arrived on Amazon Prime Video earlier this month, Clarkson arranges a Q&a for disgruntled locals in the village of Chadlington, West Yorkshire, who are unhappy with the impact of his farm and farm shop on the area of outstanding natural beauty.
“The lady from the parish council says those that are angry, are really angry,” he tells the camera as he drives to the village hall. “Like, really angry.”
He then says that the online Chadlington community board “in essence says that I’m the devil” and that he doesn’t want the villagers to come up his drive “with pitchforks”.
Clarkson says he hopes that the meeting will “calm it down”.
The Grand Tour presenter is then seen nervously arranging crisps,...

Ariana DeBose has commented on her much-derided performance at the 2023 Baftas for the first time since the event.
The 32-year-old West Side Story star opened the Baftas on Sunday (19 February) with a rendition of Eurythmics’s 1985 hit track “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves”.
Halfway through the song, DeBose broke into rap, name-checking the female nominees in the audience with lines like: “Angela Bassett did the thing. Viola Davis, my Woman King. Blanchett Cate, you’re a genius. Jamie Lee [Curtis], you are all of us.”
Following the performance, DeBose deactivated her Twitter account as the rap became the subject of online ridicule, leading fans to believe she was upset by the reaction.
Her Instagram, however, remains active. The star has now commented on a roundup of the many internet memes poking fun at “Angela Basset did the thing” in particular.

Danny Dyer has spoken out about facing classist bias throughout his time as a public figure.
The actor, who left his role on EastEnders at the end of 2022, referred to people mocking his choice to name his daughter, former Love Island star Dani Dyer, after him.
In the interview with The Times, the example of Nigella Lawson’s name being derived from her father, baron and former Tory politician Nigel Lawson, was raised as a similar choice that has not drawn as much critique.
When asked whether the difference in how people perceive this tribute is an example of class bias, Dyer agreed, replying: “I think there is classism.
“As soon as I open my mouth I’m judged as thick and poor and not articulate. I noticed that early doors, but it hasn’t really bothered me.”
Dyer grew up on a council estate in east London’s Custom House neighbourhood.

Dolly Parton has said goddaughter Miley Cyrus would be the preferred choice to lead her biopic, but under a few conditions.
In 2022, the country-music legend revealed she was in talks about possibly adapting her life story into a movie musical.
While Parton has given no concrete update on the potential biopic, she has apparently given some thought as to who would be the perfect fit to play her.
“I think Miley would be great,” Parton told Insider in a new interview. “She’s tall, but you can’t really tell that in a movie.”
The “Jolene” singer then quipped that Cyrus would “have to put on some weight, and get some bigger boobs”.
However, beyond matching Parton’s iconic bleach-blonde hair and tiny five-foot frame, she added that whoever played her would also need to have a similar singing voice.

Ernie Hudson, the actor who plays Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters film franchise, has opened up about his negative experiences on the first film.
During an interview on The Howard Stern Wrap Up Show, Hudson said that while the director Ivan Reitman “was really, really a brilliant man and I have just so much love and appreciation for him”, he does not have fond memories of the studio, Columbia Pictures.
“I was the guy who was brought in, and so finding my place in the middle of that… they were all welcoming and inclusive,” Hudson said of the cast of the 1984 original. “The studio wasn’t, and the studio continued not to be. So it made it very, very difficult because I was a part of it but then I very selectively was pushed aside.”
He added: “When the posters came out, I’m not on the poster. It took a long time.

You’ve Been Framed has reportedly been axed after 33 years on air.
The long-running ITV show, which compiled home videos of accidents and funny moments, was launched in 1990. Jeremy Beadle was the original narrator.
Most recently, comedian Harry Hill was serving as presenter, fronting 341 of 701 episodes.
As reported by The Sun, the series – which once attracted 15 million people in its prime – is coming to an end.
An insider told the publication: “The fact that You’ve Been Framed has been shelved is a sad sign of the times.”
They continued: “It’s a different world to Jeremy Beadle’s heyday. Why would viewers tune in to a show featuring funny videos when they could see the same sort of thing on the internet?
“Silly clips are hugely popular on social media and the right video can go viral. There’s a thrill in achieving that – even though you don’t...

Paul Whitehouse was asked if he had any advice for John Cleese following the news that the Monty Python star was reviving his hit Seventies sitcom, Fawlty Towers.
Earlier this month, Cleese announced that he and his daughter Camilla Cleese would be writing and starring in the reboot.
Fellow veteran comedic actor Whitehouse was asked about the revival by Andrew Marr on his eponymous Lbc talk show on Tuesday (21 February).
“You think I'm going to give Cleese advice? Don’t do it, John! Get someone younger in!” Whitehouse joked.
Marr then asked the Harry and Paul star about the state of comedy and the acceptability of jokes made years ago.
“Things you could say last year, you have to reevaluate now and you have to tread very carefully,” the 64-year-old replied.

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.
As we’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a bad series of Taskmaster, and we’re sure Series 15 will be no different, but until it arrives, what should fans fill their time watching?
Take a look at these similarly delightful TV shows, including plenty featuring previous Taskmaster series alumni:
Man Down (Channel 4)
Starring the Taskmaster himself Greg Davies, this Channel 4 sitcom centres on his character Dan, a frankly terrible schoolteacher who is having an infinitely amusing midlife crisis. As you can see from the clip above, it’ll please fans of Davies’ scathing takedowns,...

The owners of iconic British comedy show “Only Fools and Horses” have won a copyright battle against an “Only Fools”-themed dining show.
“Only Fools The (cushty) Dining Experience” is billed as an “interactive dining show” in which diners are subsumed into the world of the long-running TV series, which aired on BBC 1 between 1981 and 1991, with actors dressed as the characters delivering a part-scripted, part-improvized performance.
In a judgment handed down today, Deputy High Court Judge John Kimbell found in favor of Shazam Productions, a production company owned by the heirs of John Sullivan, creator of “Only Fool and Horses.”
Sullivan died in 2011 but his wife Sharon and children James, Dan and Amy, continue to run Shazam Productions as a vehicle for exploiting the “Only Fools and Horses” IP. Among the projects they have granted a license to are board games, books and a musical co-written by James Sullivan and comedian Paul Whitehouse.

"In a world gone mad..." Animortal Studio has dropped in a second official UK trailer for this extremely wild, badass stop-motion action horror film called Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires, written & directed by animator Mike Mort. It first premiered in 2018 at the Annecy Film Festival (where I saw it) and at the Sitges Film Festival, but has never been released since then. It's a full-on, R-rated, guts & gore, stop-motion 80s throwback. Set in 1986, the film follows a cop named "Chuck Steel", who must fight off forces of evil when a scourge of Trampires – a mutated hybrid of vampire and tramp – start to take over the city. The voice cast includes director Mike Mort as Chuck Steel, with Jennifer Saunders, Paul Whitehouse, Dan Russell, Jonnie Fiori, and Samantha Coughlan. I'm sooo happy this film is finally getting a UK release! I hope it shows up in the US soon. If...

Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Will Poulter (“The Revenant”) are set to star in Hugh Laurie’s adaptation of “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, one of Agatha Christie’s earliest murder mystery novels.
Laurie (“House”) is set to direct and act in the three-part series for BritBox North America, in which he plays the creepy Dr. James Nicholson, a clinical director of a sanatorium.
Christie published “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, which follows Bobby (Poulter) and shrewd socialite Lady Frances (Boynton) as they untangle a murder mystery, in 1934. In classic Christie fashion, there are plenty of twists and turns until the perpetrator is finally unmasked.
“I’m so thrilled to be working with Hugh and Will, and on this story from one of my favourite authors,” said Boynton. “I can’t wait to get started.” She won’t have to wait long with production kicking off this week.

Horror can come from anywhere: an unfamiliar European hostel, a remote sleepaway camp in the woods or even just in the comfy confines of the human brain. Every now and then it can be fun to reconnect with that child-like portion of our minds that is truly susceptible to irrational fear. The best way is to merely just hear a good scary story.
But perhaps the best place to find horror is on your friendly neighborhood Hulu. Hulu is best known for its TV comedy offerings but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in pure terror.

The Personal History of David Copperfield, which opens in North American theaters Friday, August 28th, re-imagines Charles Dickens’ classic ode to grit and perseverance through the comedic lens of director Armando Iannucci. After making its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield is ready to hit theaters. Searchlight Pictures is debuting the reimagining of the Charles Dickens’ classic starring Dev Patel in physical theaters (remember those?). To be more specific, the film will open in over 1,350 theaters across the U.S. and Canada with an expansion on September 4. David Copperfield is the first film Searchlight Pictures has released in theaters since Wendy in late February, a month before the pandemic caused box offices to shutter.

As the temps show little signs of cooling (and Fall’s less than four weeks away), another way to pass the hours in the “great indoors” (a very familiar locale for the last five months or so) is to scoop up a beloved literary classic, blow the dust off, and dive right in to revisit another faraway time. Or, for those more adventurous folk, head down to the just reopened movie theatres for the latest big-screen adaptation. Yes, this work has inspired countless artists over its 170 plus years’ history. One such writer/filmmaker, who’s been quite the award magnet in televised media over the last couple of decades, has decided to put his “spin” on this classic to both honor the original tome and breathe “new life” into it for today’s movie audiences. That may account for his “addition” to the title (which had been just the main...

An avid Charles Dickens fan, Iannucci adapts his story along with frequent collaborator Simon Blackwell, employing his comedic mastery and vivid characterizations to bring to life one of Dickens' most cherished characters in The Personal History of David Copperfield. Set in Victorian England, the film follows Dev Patel playing Copperfield as he encounters all kinds of odd characters throughout his life. Also starring Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, and Paul Whitehouse. I am very much looking forward to seeing this! Seems like perfect timing for it...

If you wanted to imagine how “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci might put his own farcical spin on the Charles Dickens classic for “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” look no further than a scene of Ben Whishaw and Tilda Swinton slapping each other back and forth.
The first trailer for Searchlight Pictures’ “The Personal History of David Copperfield” shows a crowd-pleasing, silly and satirical period piece starring Dev Patel as the classic title character. And the film also assembles some of Iannucci’s other favorites from “In the Loop” and “Avenue 5,” including Hugh Laurie and Peter Capaldi.
“London is full of wonders and wickedness, and it’s our David to go wherever we choose,” Capaldi says with a smile. “Hold on not down there. Creditors make that road impossible. Two tailors and a most unreasonable muffin man.”

There are a couple of pieces already online about Linda Muir’s meticulous costume design for 1890s set The Lighthouse – see Here and Here. As such, anything we might add would largely be clickbait redundant. So, go and read those serious and informative articles and then come back here to join us in celebration of something those pieces don’t discuss, but is possibly even more important than all that painstaking period recreation and making oilskins from scratch: high-waisted trousers.
Out of all the trends that work their way into mainstream menswear, high-waisted trousers don’t seem to stick. Certainly they are popular in women’s clothing, where, with an apparently undetected degree of irony, they are largely employed to invoke masculine attire. Yet for cis-gendered menswear, high-waisted trousers remain primarily the preserve of the vintage community. There has been a pleasing revival for suits, especially on younger men, who...

A wonderfully witty and heart warming tale. It’s the kind of feel good cinema that can touch anyone’s heart, pure joy wrapped up in a string of delightful performances.
The world of Dickens for me has always been one of dark and terrible times. My first introduction was surely a version of A Christmas Carol when I was young, but it was in high school reading Great Expectations that I got my first true taste of Dickens. It was only the first few chapters that I remember so clearly and for some unknown reason I couldn’t get the first chapter out of my head. I still have the image of a gothic cemetery etched into my brain. As a...

While Armando Iannucci‘s “Veep” failed to turn any of its nominations in to wins at this year’s Emmys, the writer/director is all but certain to get some love from the BAFTAs and Oscars for his new film “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Iannucci’s lovingly crafted adaptation of his favorite of Charles Dickens‘ novels opened the BFI London Film Festival and was very well-received.
The cast is refreshingly diverse for a period piece. This color blind casting makes the film feel very modern. Today’s audiences will recognise and relate to these Victorian era characters. In the titular role, Dev Patel stands out even among a collection of more colorful characters. Hugh Laurie, Gwendoline Christie, Daisy May Cooper, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Benedict Wong, Paul Whitehouse and the (ex) Doctor himself Peter Capaldi all have standout moments in the film with Christie being my personal favorite...
