Filmmaker Dee Rees made history on June 29 when her debut feature “Pariah” joined the Criterion Collection, making the Oscar and Emmy nominee the first Black American woman to have her work included. Before Rees, Euzhan Palcy, who is from Martinique, was the lone Black woman to have a film (1989’s “A Dry White Season”) selected.
“It feels like a formal acknowledgment of the film’s impact to the canon and being a part of the culture,” Rees tells Variety of having her movie chosen. “Even though artists have to try to find your validation from inside, it’s nice to be seen.”
And as a Black filmmaker in particular, Rees adds, “it’s important to be included for future generations of filmmakers, if [Criterion] is the thing that’s being taught in schools.”

The stars of the Fox sketch comedy series In Living Color took a walk back in time Saturday, to share details on how the 1990s hit came about during a special screening at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The hit comedy was a result of the then-fledgling Fox network’s desire to “push the envelope,” said Keenan Ivory Wayans, who created, wrote and starred in the program from 20th Century Fox Television.
During an onstage discussion, Wayans recalled meeting with Fox execs after showing them his 1988 feature, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.
“The TV folks invited me to meet them. I wasn’t looking [to do TV], I wanted to make movies,” said Wayans who was joined by In Living Color alums Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davidson and David Alan Grier.

Twenty-five years after the finale of “In Living Color,” creator and star Keenen Ivory Wayans still knows that his groundbreaking show took big chances to make television history.
Speaking at a sold-out Tribeca Film Festival panel honoring the sketch comedy series on Saturday, he said that “the intent of the show was to include everybody. Everybody is going to laugh.” However, he also noted that “you can only be as good as the time period you live in…with the information you have. So, that is what we tried to do. We wanted everybody to go, ‘Man that’s messed up, but that is funny as hell.’”
Cast member David Alan Grier reflected on how the show transcended the comedy genre to become a movement for inclusion, years before such initiatives were being made. Prior to this show, Grier said, “all white executives, they would look at us with blank faces and say,...

You can do what you wanna do in living color, including reunite 25 years after your TV series comes to an end. That’s what creator/star Keenan Ivory Wayans just did at Tribeca with co-stars Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davidson, and David Alan Grier, celebrating the sketch-comedy show’s five-season run in the early ’90s. Though lesser known than late-night standard-bearer “Saturday Night Live,” “In Living Color” launched the careers of Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Lopez, among others, while giving voice to a new brand of humor.
Moderated by Aisha Harris of the New York Times, the reunion followed a screening of the pilot episode. Harris put the show’s importance into context, noting that a number of black comedians had risen to fame prior to “In Living Color” premiering in 1990 but that there was still nothing on the air quite like it.

Dee Rees is a tall woman of fierce charisma. She’s the kind of director who talks fast, ideas coming so quickly that those less inclined can barely keep up. And yet her output has been slow: After Focus Features snapped up her breakout 2011 feature debut “Pariah” at Sundance, it was four years before HBO Film’s Emmy and DGA-award-winning 2015 biopic “Bessie.”

Finally, we get to see Rees fulfill her promise with “Mudbound,” a Sundance triumph that set the 2017 festival sales record with its $12.5 million sale to Netflix, and opened AFI Fest November 9 after wowing crowds at seven film festivals.

In the summer of 1989, while Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" was sounding a thunderclap in cinemas, a troupe of largely black actors and comedians came together on a Fox sound stage in Century City to produce a sketch comedy show aimed at servicing a minority point of view that had been underrepresented by the medium. With producer Keenen Ivory Wayans at the helm, fresh off the success of his 1988 Blaxploitation parody film "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka," eight individuals — a then-unknown Jim Carrey along with Kelly Coffield, Kim Coles, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, T'Keyah "Crystal" Keymáh and Wayans' siblings Damon and Kim — filmed the first episodes of "In Living Color." The show debuted on April 15, 1990, and 25 years later, Damon Wayans can't help but remember first and foremost that he had hair back then. "I remember the pain of getting fired from 'Saturday Night Live' and feeling that I needed redemption,...

As Kim Wayans says in our extended feature on the 25th anniversary of "In Living Color," her brother Keenen was always encouraging on-screen talent to draw on real-life circumstances and relationships to inject truth into their work. That was, as Damon Wayans explains, the big difference between "Saturday Night Live," a writer-driven show, and "In Living Color," a character-driven show where actors were eventually encouraged to pitch characters and concepts and work them out with the writers. It's no surprise, then, that some of these characters would have personal connections with the performers. As you can see in anecdotes from Kelly Coffield, T'Keyah "Crystal" Keymáh and Kim Wayans, quite a few of them in fact came from other corners of their lives, be it someone they knew or something that would just organically spring to life in the day-to-day camaraderie of the show. Learn more about the inspirations behind classic characters like Benita Butrell,...

Sorry Reckless fans, there won't be a second season of the steamy summer legal drama. CBS has cancelled the series after one season of 13 episodes.
Reckless revolves around a beautiful litigator from the north and a charming southern attorney who must hide their intense mutual attraction as a police sex scandal erupts in Charleston, South Carolina. The TV show's cast includes Cam Gigandet, Anna Wood, Shawn Hatosy, Georgina Haig, Adam Rodríguez, Michael Gladis, Kim Wayans, and Gregory Harrison.
The series debuted in late June to just a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.99 million total viewers. The numbers didn't get much better over the course of the season and ended up averaging just a 0.6 demo rating with 3.91 million viewers. The network burned off the final episodes on a Saturday night.

Legal and crime dramas are a big part of the CBS schedule during the year. This summer, the network started airing another one -- Reckless. Has this new TV show been a ratings success? Will it be renewed for a second season or, will it be cancelled instead?

Remember when you didn’t have to protest to see a black woman comedian on television? Watching Erika Alexander as Maxine on Living Single, Kim Wayans on In Living Color, and Debra Wilson on Mad TV may seem like luxuries now. As we know, for the last six years, there’s been an absence of women of color comedians, specifically black women on Saturday Night Live; a void so apparent that even actress Kerry Washington spoofed the disparity when she hosted the show in November. Switching between Oprah and Michelle Obama impersonations in the same sketch, she openly addressed the absence, which was bolstered by widespread criticism of the show and its creator, Lorne Michaels.Announced this...

With two hugely successful female-led comedies (Bridesmaids and The Heat) under his belt and a third (Susan Cooper) on the way, Paul Feig is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most in-demand comedy directors. Now, Deadline is reporting that Feig will produce and possibly direct another female-fronted comedy.
Plot details are being kept under lock and key for now, but the film will feature a screenplay from Melissa Stack, who first pitched the idea to 20th Century Fox. Stack previously penned the script for the upcoming Nick Cassavetes-directed comedy The Other Woman. That film, which stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Taylor Kinney, Kate Upton and Nicki Minaj, will focus on a woman who discovers her boyfriend is actually married and plots revenge against him with the help of his wife.
Feig will produce alongside Jessie Henderson under his Feigco banner, which is devoted to making R-rated comedies.

If this post does anything I hope it will get those of you that never saw 2011's Pariah to give it a shot because it's great. Directed by Dee Rees and featuring a powerful performance from Adepero Oduye (who plays Eliza in 12 Years a Slave) and a surprising performance from Kim Wayans it narrowly missed my Top Ten of 2011. Oh, and if you need any more reason, it's only 87 minutes long so it won't take too much of your time. amz asin="0547572573" size="small"I mention all of this because Rees hasn't delivered anything new since, despite being attached to an HBO project with Viola Davis and a couple other projects that have yet to find their way to our eyeballs. However, she appears to have found yet another potential property to consider as Deadline reports she will get to work adapting Philip K. Dick's "Martian Time-Slip" a story...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fourth announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on CBS.
The king of the networks easily remains in charge despite "Elementary" being their only fresh hit of last season's new shows. The network's line-up remains fairly stable with only a few key moves such as Thursday being expanded to include two hours of comedy programming, and "Hawaii Five-0" moving to Fridays.
Several other pilots didn't make the cut this week including the series sequel to the "Beverly Hills Cop" movies, a TV version of the comedy "Bad Teacher", the "NCIS" mobile spin-off "NCIS: Red," a procedural based on Leif G.W. Persson's literary homicide detective Everett Backstrom, the Frank Marshall-produced political thriller "The Ordained" about a priest turned lawyer trying to save his sister from assassination,...

"Southland" star Ben McKenzie has scored the lead role in CBS' new legal pilot "The Advocates," but what does that mean for his future on the TNT cop drama?
According to TVLine, McKenzie will play Henry Bird in "The Advocates" pilot. His character is described as a "quietly determined" man who "is freed after being unjustly imprisoned for 16 years." He and a female lawyer will join forces to become "victim advocates," who will often skirt the edges of the law in the interests of representing the legal underdogs of the world.
McKenzie's pilot role is in second position to "Southland," but there's obviously enough interest from "Advocates" production studio Warner Bros. (which also produces "Southland") to raise questions about the TNT show's longevity, since actors with job security rarely audition for other parts. It's also possible that should "Southland" be renewed and "The Advocates" be picked up to series by CBS,...

"The Pact" featured Mackenzie Phillips as Ellen Russell and Kim Wayans as Darlene Beckett, a pair of mothers whose children were victims of killers.
Ellen's child was hit by a drunk driver and Kim's little girl was murdered by a sex fiend... actually a group of them. The mothers were out for blood and agreed to swap vengeance in the manner of Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train or the more recent Throw Momma from the Train, directed by Danny Devito. Only one of them happened to enjoy the process a little too much, while the other could barely keep from blowing chunks after each episode of their vigilante justice.
This partnership, or pact, formed the theme for the episode, summed up with the Bau's profile of them when it was stated they felt the "justice system has gone wrong and it's up to them to set it right."

Chicago – 2011 featured a series of uncommonly affecting films from female directors about young women grappling with their sexual identities. In all three cases, the heroines strain to keep their lesbianism a secret from their families. Céline Sciamma’s “Tomboy” centered on a 10-year-old girl who posed as a boy, while Maryam Keshavarz’s “Circumstance” explored the forbidden romance of two Iranian teens.
These films are so good that it makes one wonder why there aren’t as many accomplished films about young men coming to terms with their homosexuality. Queer cinema too often falls under the stereotypical categorization of soft-core art house fare with earnest messages and amateurish production values. They seem tailor-made for a niche audience, but what makes “Tomboy,” “Circumstance” and Dee Rees’s “Pariah” so powerful is their resonance as universal human stories. These characters aren’t defined by their sexual orientations, despite what society would lead them to believe.

As expected, Tate Taylor's "The Help" won big at the 43rd Annual NAACP Image Awards. The film won Outstanding Picture of the Year with Viola Davis winning Outstanding Actress and Octavia Spencer taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actress award. Taylor lost to "Jumping the Broom's" Salim Akil for Best Director because apparently, it's a better picture than "The Help!"

Pariah joins a long line of coming of age dramas set in New York ( in this case Brooklyn ). It deals with a young African-American woman about to finish high school and explore the world. Unlike many of these films, this protagonist is concealing her sexuality from her family and many friends. The title refers to the reaction many have gotten when they’ve come out. They’re treated as pariahs-outcast and ostracized. Writer/ director Dee Rees tells this story with great sensitivity and avoids exploitation and stereotyping.
The film follows Alike ( Adepero Oduye ) during her last few months of high school. She lives with her religious mother Audry ( Kim Wayans ), usually absent policeman father Arthur ( Charles Parnell ) and bratty, spying kid sister Sharonda ( Sahra Mellesse ). Alike is a quiet student who excels in her writing class. After school she meets up with her best pal, the hard-working, living on her...
