MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it Here) and X (watch that one at This Link), is swiftly approaching its July 5th theatrical release date – but before we get there, A24 will be bringing franchise starter X back to theatres for one night only, on June 18th. IndieWire reports that movie-goers who attend the June 18th screenings (tickets are available at This Link) of X will get to see a preview of MaXXXine after the end credits roll.
MaXXXine is written and directed by West. Mia Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film has the following synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood...

“No ma’am, we don’t need Hollywood,” would-be movie producer Wayne tells his crew at the start of the horror film X. “These types of pictures turn regular folks into stars.”
The type of pictures in question are pornographic films, for which Wayne (Martin Henderson) has assembled a small cast and crew and brought them to a secluded Texas farmhouse. Set in 1979, the slasher X not only pays homage to the decade’s grisly and low-budget horror movies but it also captures a moment in which loosening obscenity laws and increased home viewing options make pornography a profitable business.
A few months after X hit theaters, director Ti West released the prequel film Pearl, which he co-wrote with star Mia Goth. Pearl takes place in 1918, long before changing mores made pornography prevalent. In fact, pornography appears only briefly in Pearl, when projectionist (future Superman David Cornswet) tries to impress...

Ti West's 2022 film "X" is a stylish but largely off-the-rack slasher movie wherein victims are stalked and killed, one by one, in standard slasher movie location #31 — in this case, a remote country farm. Curiously, the film's violence and everyday slasher elements are its weakest, with West filming various slayings with only slightly more panache than one might see in a random slasher sequel from the mid-1980s. As a grumpy old Gen-Xer who grew up during the heyday of slashers, I was unimpressed with West's more or less faithful recreation.
There are, however, some intriguing themes of lust and loss that made "X" warrant slightly closer attention than many of your average slasher movies. "X" is set in Texas in 1979 — already giving off "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" vibes — and follows a group of adult filmmakers who have been, for unstated reasons, drummed out of the mainstream porn scene. They want to make an ambitious,...

Maxine is ready for her close-up.
Star Mia Goth reprises the role of ingenue adult film actress turned final girl Maxine for “MaXXXine,” the final installment in Ti West’s trilogy, which already includes “X” and “Pearl.” In West’s latest film, we’re sent into the decade after the events of “X,” which chronicled an adult film shoot gone wrong on a Southern farm. It’s now 1985, and Maxine has made her way to Los Angeles, where she’s looking to get famous.
Goth played a double role in “X” as both Maxine and the surprise older version of Pearl, the character expanded upon in the follow-up prequel film “Pearl,” hidden behind prosthetic old-age makeup and now owning the farm on which the “X” crew is shooting a porno. In the new “MaXXXine,” Maxine is now the only survivor of a massacre that flattened the entire “X” film shoot.

Two performers defined horror in 2022: Jenna Ortega and Mia Goth. No others quite compare to the sheer emotional brawn both actors brought to the screen. While they have each been working for years in various TV and film roles, the stars aligned over the last 12 months to catapult them into the stratosphere. From Goth’s stunning turn in Pearl to Ortega’s career-making performance as Wednesday Addams, the breadth of work on display is unmatched. Their magnetism is unequivocal. They have a talent of outlining full-bodied characters with bright definition and intention. Together, they make a tour de force of talent that leaps beyond the horror world.
Goth, who previously appeared in 2018’s Suspiria remake, guns for magnificence with year-topping performances in X and Pearl. Playing two drastically dissimilar roles, a bombshell sex pot in one and a mentally deranged killer in the other, Goth manages to cultivate two...

This post contains major spoilers for "X."
A bloody deconstruction of the slasher genre, Ti West's "X" features an ensemble cast that isn't afraid of getting its hands dirty, in more ways than one. The film revolves around a group of filmmakers looking to make an adult film in the middle of nowhere, as one normally does. A subversive narrative gives thematic weight to it all, but "X" has just as much fun with the gory bits of the genre. While Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) is the central driving force of "X," Jenna Ortega especially impresses as Lorraine, an initially shy Christian girl that slowly but surely sheds her conservative shell. That is, until she dies, of course.
After nearly every other crew member of the porn production met their untimely deaths, the remaining survivors, Lorraine and Maxine, were left trying to escape the killer's home. Regretting her involvement in the entire ordeal,...

People have been trying to remake The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for a long time. Not just the many (mostly awful) sequels, but filmmakers have been trying to catch that lightning in a bottle. Most of these films are extremely gory, which The Texas Chainsaw Massacre never was. It has come to be known as this horrifically violent film, but it wasn’t. There was only a tiny bit of blood. What the film absolutely nailed was horrific tension, that only perhaps The Thing ever managed to rival. The thing is, buckets of fake blood, are easy to bring on set, cranking up relentless tension, is all down to the skill of the filmmaker. So, buckets of fake blood are the order of the day for most horror films, before...

The scares continue in A24's new horror movie "Pearl," a prequel to "X," which was released earlier this year. In "X," a group of young people, including Maxine - played by Mia Goth - try to film a pornographic movie on a farm inhabited by two old people, Howard (Stephen Ure) and Pearl. Pearl ultimately goes on a killing spree and takes out the visitors one by one, until Maxine kills her and flees from the farm. After the movie was released, director Ti West announced that a prequel that would serve as an "origin story" for Pearl had also been secretly filmed.
The new movie, released Sept. 16, was clearly influenced by Technicolor movies of yesteryear, like "Mary Poppins" and "The Wizard of Oz." In the film, Pearl is intent on leaving her parents' suffocating farm and starting a new life as a Hollywood star. But the iron grip of her mother,...

**Spoiler Warning: There are very minor spoilers about X in this piece. If you haven’t seen the film yet, consider this your warning before proceeding.**
Ti West has been one of my favorite filmmakers working in the realm of independent cinema for so long now, that initially, when I thought about writing something personal about his latest project, X, celebrating how the film is such a beautiful and engrossing love letter to the world of indie filmmaking immediately came to mind. But the thing is, the more time that I’ve spent with X in my head, the more the film’s emotional themes tied to aging and mortality are what have been hitting me hardest over the last month. Truth be told, there are a lot of reasons why I love X as much as I do, or why it’s definitely the frontrunner for my favorite horror...

A group of independent filmmakers set out to rural Texas to make their adult cinematic dreams come true. Full frame stars and strips designed font, presenting the year 1979, welcomes viewers to director Ti West's throwback genre homage titled "X."
The opening moments shot through barn doors and into the bloody aftermath of a murder scene feel tailored for a 1970s Tobe Hooper or Wes Craven production with its grainy film look highlighted with yellow and brown hues. Director Ti West, returning to the genre for the first time in over a decade, takes an old-school slasher movie approach with "X," blending the renegade spirit of the early independent horror filmmakers and the dawn of mass-produced pornography for a satisfyingly violent and humorous romp.
Maxine (Mia Goth) is an exotic dancer at the Bayou Burlesque, a railroad adjacent dive on the wrong side of town, but her ambitions are for stardom on the silver screen.

Ti West's new horror movie, "X," hits theaters nationwide on March 18. The film stars Mia Goth, Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Owen Campbell, and Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) as a ragtag group of filmmakers in 1979 looking to shoot a porn film on an old couple's farm, without the owners knowledge. However, that old couple - Howard (Stephen Ure) and Pearl and Ortega (Lorraine) are the last two members of the group standing after everyone else has been killed off in brutal ways. Lorraine is trapped in the couple's basement, while Maxine hides under her bed in the guest house. However, Maxine's hiding place turns out to be the wrong choice. Howard and Pearl enter the room, and Pearl convinces her husband to have finally have sex with her again on that very bed. As the pair are distracted by their carnal joining, Maxine silently crawls out from under the bed and escapes.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains some spoilers for Ti West’s “X.”]
The secret is out: in Ti West’s bloody, boisterous “X,” a ’70s-set slasher about an ill-fated group of filmmakers who set out to film porn in the world’s worst location, star Mia Goth is saddled with two terrifying roles.
In the film, Goth plays both starry-eyed stripper Maxine (who is hoping that the porn will rocket her to fame) and the rage-filled Pearl, one half of the older couple who owns the property the film is being shot on.
Hot on the heels of the film’s SXSW premiere, West himself (and distributors A24) pretty much broke the double-role news with the revelation that he had already shot a prequel to “X” starring Goth, who returns to play the younger Pearl. The story will allow Goth to explore Pearl’s earlier years — West told IndieWire it would be about “how the cabin where the massacre of ‘X’ takes...

Director Ti West’s X is a new love letter to the slasher film genre. This movie within a movie aims to tackle the strict relationship between sex, violence, desire and the rage that manifests when one’s life lacks all of those things. West employs all the tropes involved with pornography and horror and tries to inject personal hints of creativity and originality into the narrative. Will it age well if I watch it again in five years? Probably not. But it provides enough fun and excitement in the current moment to keep audiences engaged.

Bloody. Brutal. Grungier than a big-city back alley and more guts-strewn than a slaughterhouse. This is how you like your slasher-flick horror, and trust is when we say Ti West has your back. Part of a young, hungry generation of horror auteurs weaned on the grindhouse canon, he’s dabbled in a number of dark, dingy subgenres, from quick ‘n’ dirty sequels (Cabin Fever 2) to the slow-burn supernatural (The Innkeepers) to neo-Seventiesploitation (the cult thriller The Sacrament). But go back to his best-in-show entry from 2009, The House of the Devil,...

Stars: Mia Goth, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, Owen Campbell, Kid Cudi, Stephen Ure | Written and Directed by Ti West
Writer-director Ti West consolidates his reputation as one of America’s best horror filmmakers with this terrific ’70s-set slasher that plays like Boogie Nights meets The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, only without the titular implement. Tense, erotic and perversely playful, it’s one of the best horror films of the year.
Set in 1979, X opens in Texas, where hustler-producer Wayne (Martin Henderson) has hired a remote farm cottage in order to film an independent porn movie with his girlfriend Maxine (Mia Goth), ambitious director-cinematographer Rj (Owen Campbell), sound recordist Lorraine (Jenna Ortega) and uninhibited co-stars Bobby-Lynne (Brittany Snow) and Jackson (Kid Cudi). However, the creepy elderly couple who own the barn haven’t been informed of Wayne’s intentions and they soon make their presence felt.
West’s direction is exceptional throughout.

The renegade intensity of Ti West’s “X,” another homage by the “House of the Devil” writer-director to independent cinema’s past, and his first horror film in over a decade, is his willingness to ask: What if a slasher, but with porn? That genre bending — in a rollicking, wicked dark horror comedy about intrepid filmmakers just barely scraping by, the fetishization of youth, and how the weight of aging into a sexless marriage can lead to mayhem — . While West isn’t always operating on the same levels as his influences, his signature flair for tension through simmering slow-burn pacing remains unparalleled.
“X” kicks off on a secluded Texas farm surrounded by local police. The opening scene, framed within a barn, peers outside toward a simple wooden home peeking above the brush landscape. As an incessant buzz of flies swarm, the camera tracks outside revealing a trio of cop cars.

The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers director Ti West is back with his first feature in seven years this spring. X, which stars Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi, follows an adult film shoot in rural Texas that turns deadly. Ahead of a March release from A24, the first trailer has now arrived.
Set in 1979, Ti West looks to be bringing some levity to the slasher, replicating the look of the era for the film within the film. After earning acclaim with his early horror features, West has spent much of the last half-a-decade working in television, so his return to features is a welcome one, and with the backing of A24, this could see him reaching quite a bigger audience.
Watch the trailer below.
X opens on March 18, 2022.

A24, the film distributor behind horror hits like “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” “The Witch” and more, has unveiled its latest bloody thriller — and it’s simply titled “X.”
The trailer launched Wednesday and its logline reads as follows: “At a secluded farmhouse in Texas, a film crew arrives to shoot an adult film. Their hosts, a reclusive elderly couple, take a special interest in their young guests. As night falls, the couple’s leering interest turns violent.”
The cast includes Mia Goth, who’s starred in horror films and thrillers including Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” Claire Denis’ “High Life” and Gore Verbinski’s “A Cure for Wellness,” as well as the period romantic comedy “Emma.” “X” also features Scott Mescudi, also known as rapper Kid Cudi, who recently appeared in Netflix’s “Don’t Look Up,” “Bill and Ted Face the Music” and the HBO series “We Are Who We Are.” Brittany Snow,...

“Lord of the Rings” fans might not recognize Stephen Ure by his face, but they will surely remember the performances he gives in Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth trilogy. Ure disguised himself under pounds of makeup prosthetics to play several Orc characters on the three films, most notably the Orc captain of Mordor named Grishnákh. The actor recently joined other performers who played Orcs and Uruk-hai for an interview with Thrillist, and he attributed some of the franchise’s most baffling lines of dialogue to “Rings” co-writer Philippa Boyens.
One of Ure’s most famous “Rings” scenes is the “Two Towers” fight that breaks out between the Orcs and Uruk-hai over whether or not some of the hungry Orcs can eat the hobbits Pippin and Merry. The fight culminates in a Uruk-hai proclaiming, “Looks like meat’s back on the menu, boys!” The line has lived in infamy among “Rings...

Having a panic attack is never good, but it sounds especially complicated when you’re suffering one under so many pounds of prosthetic makeup that no one around you even noticed. Such was the case for actor Stephen Ure during the making of “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.” Ure starred as the Orc named Grishnakh in Peter Jackson’s trilogy. In a recent conversation with Thrillist, the actor remembered losing his swallowing mechanism during the filming of a fight scene between the Orcs and Uruk-hai. Losing his swallowing mechanism resulted in Ure getting “a bit panicky” and starting to “hyperventilate a little bit.”
“The more the panic is coming the worst that it is,” Ure said. “I’d never really experienced a panic like that. I was maybe three seconds away from ripping the face off so I could breathe, I thought I couldn’t breathe. No...

Fifteen actors from The Lord of the Rings movies have filed suit against film studio New Line, accusing the company of a breach of contract over merchandising. The New Zealand actors filed court papers in Los Angeles Superior Court last Wednesday, alleging New Line broke an agreement to pay them five per cent of an estimated $100 million profits from merchandising sales, such as caps, games and mugs. The actors' lawyer Henry Gradstein said New Line took "gross participation" fees that the company wasn't entitled to. Gradstein says, "The expenses will always be approximately 104 per cent. It's Hollywood accounting." This is the latest of several lawsuits New Line have been served with in relation to the film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic novels. In 2005, director Peter Jackson accused New Line of withholding profits from the first installment in the trilogy The Fellowship Of The Ring, while producer Saul Zaentz settled out of court with the firm over the rights to the books. According to industry newspaper Variety, the fifteen actors filing lawsuits are: Noel Appleby, Jed Brophy, Mark Ferguson, Ray Henwood, Bruce Hopkins, William Johnson, Nathaniel Lees, Sarah McLeod, Ian Mune, Paul Norell, Craig Parker, Robert Pollock, Martyn Sanderson, Peter Tait and Stephen Ure.
