Christopher Nolan revealed to Empire in an interview that his filmography owes a lot to James Bond films. The director is known for his often non-linear narrative and a commitment to making groundbreaking films, and now it seems a lot of that comes from a love for Bond films.
Batman Begins | Warner Brothers
While inspiration that Nolan has taken from the franchise is clear in films like Tenet, there is another film from the director that takes clear cues from the Bond franchise: his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne and Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon.
Christopher Nolan “plundered” from Bond movies
Daniel Craig as James Bond in No Time To Die | MGM
Bond films usually have some of the best spy action ever put to the big screen, and deal with balancing cerebral plots with action set pieces that are also reminiscent of the spy thrillers of old.

While these are more space fantasy than true sci-fi, the genre's core purpose is to offer commentary on our present and possible future. Films like Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, and Ridley Scott's The Martian are exemplary in their scientific fidelity. However, one film stands out for its unparalleled accuracy: Ron Howard's Apollo 13.
The Story of the Failed, Yet Heroic Flight to the Moon
"Apollo 13" is not your typical sci-fi movie but rather a science space drama with fictional elements, dramatizing the perilous events of the April 1970 space mission. Directed by Ron Howard, known for films like Willow, A Beautiful Mind, and The Da Vinci Code, and written by William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert, the movie meticulously recreates the dangerous mission.

The crowd at Los Angeles’ DGA Theater was treated to two Nolans for the price of one on Tuesday night, as Christopher Nolan joined brother Jonathan Nolan for a For Your Consideration event in support of the latter’s Fallout series.
Jonathan executive produced the Prime Video show — based on the popular video game exploring a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles — as well as directed three of the episodes. The Oppenheimer filmmaker brought Jonathan to the stage by introducing him as “my baby brother,” as the two dove into a wide-ranging chat that touched on their previous collaboration on The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (which they co-wrote and Christopher directed).
Jonathan noted at one point that in forming a video game into a series, “I watched the way that you adapted Batman from comic books to film and I think the underlying idea was treated with respect, not to...

Hollywood star Gary Oldman recently reflected on his previous remarks about his performance in the Harry Potter franchise. The actor played the role of Sirius Black, the titular character’s godfather, starting with the 2004 film The Prisoner of Azkaban. Despite earning critical acclaim, he called his own performance in the franchise “mediocre,” arguing that it could have been much better if he had read J.K. Rowling’s original book series.

Donna Langley has done it all. She slowly worked her way up the ranks at Universal Studios and now runs the whole entertainment side of NBCUniversal — motion pictures, Focus Features, television, and Peacock.
She’s one of the Hollywood executives who knows talent and how to make good, commercial movies. She’s kept the “Fast and the Furious” franchise going strong and landed Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which scored almost $1 billion for the studio, along with seven Oscar wins, including Best Picture.
In short, she knows what she’s doing and, at a wide-ranging Kering Women in Motion chat at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week, where she was on hand to accept her award as the 2024 Women In Motion Award honoree, Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh tried to pry some of her genius out of her to share.

Francis Ford Coppola is best known for his work on The Godfather trilogy. The accomplished filmmaker is one of the era-defining filmmakers of the 70s up to the 90s, where he made some of the best works of his career. Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, Peggy Sue Got Married, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and The Rainmaker were some of his other great works.

It is no secret that Marisa Tomei’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Homecoming left fans breathless, the same way she once captivated Robert Downey Jr. during their brief romance years ago. Renowned for his visionary filmmaking, Christopher Nolan has established a strong working relationship with a select group of actors, including Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine, who has starred in every Nolan film since Batman Begins, including The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, The Prestige, Interstellar, and Tanet, along with an uncredited cameo in Dunkirk.

Dwayne Johnson is nearly unrecognizable in the first look at his upcoming A24 drama “The Smashing Machine,” directed by Benny Safdie and co-starring his “Jungle Cruise” screen partner Emily Blunt. The film casts Johnson as legendary Mma fighter Mark Kerr, who struggled with addiction and his marriage while becoming an icon of the sport. Blunt is starring as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife. The film is currently in production.
While Johnson looks typically ripped as Kerr in “The Smashing Machine” first look, he also appears to be sporting some facial prosthetics to help him transform into the Mma legend. Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner. Over the course of his career, he won over two dozen Mma titles.

One would think Christopher Nolan holds the ultimate power over his movies. Thus, it would be rare for anyone to challenge his vision. Sci-fi production design may well have peaked with "Blade Runner." This quote from director Christopher Nolan is a favorite of mine, simply because of how well it sums up the way in which Ridley Scott's 1982 classic, despite its fantastical sci-fi aesthetic, constructs a world that feels real:
"The atmosphere of 'Blade Runner' was also important, that feeling that there was this whole world outside the frame of the scene. You really felt there were things going on outside of those rooms where you've seen the film take place [...] Every film should have its own world, a logic and feel to it that expands beyond the exact image that the audience is seeing."
Nolan has previously spoken about the importance of establishing a "cinematic reality" — evoking a feeling in the audience that what they're seeing, regardless of its factual accuracy, is really happening. It's a trick I think...

Film industry players gathered at Mr. Nakamoto at the Mondrian hotel in Cannes on Monday night to celebrate Universal Pictures International.
As Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh pointed out in his opening remarks, Universal had several big successes this past year, not the least of which was Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which took home seven Oscars. The studio also produced box office hits “The Super Mario Bros. For this reason, Universal Pictures International was awarded Variety‘s international achievement in film award, which was accepted by the company’s president of distribution — international Veronika Kwan Vandenberg.

Todd Phillips may be blessed with a keen eye when it comes to cinema but his comments on Christopher Nolan’s universally recognized classic, the Dark Knight trilogy, is a scarily contentious opinion. But as sacred as Christian Bale’s DC outing may have been, there exists a limitation to the height of the pedestal that one is allowed to be raised to.
Batman Begins (2005) [Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures]With the passage of time, it may have become easier to cope with the withdrawal of Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece. However, it is with loyalty, dedication, and love that the audience time and again returns to the Dark Knight trilogy. This shows not only an instinctive pull towards the series but also an admiration unmarred by time or repeated watching.

Steven Spielberg’s legacy is a much-renowned one, unmarred by time and the arrival of new talent. His films have established a new era in Hollywood, through Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. Despite the presence of evolved technologies and newer creatives, not many have been able to recreate the scale of Spielberg’s career or overthrow his status as a living legend.

It seemed appropriate that the location for the annual Women in Motion dinner in Cannes should be at Place de la Castre, atop Suquet Hill where victors of yore could survey their domain. It was certainly the case that honored guest Dame Donna Langley had captured the castle.
Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch struck the right note when when she remarked to the NBCUniversal Studio Group Chair and Chief Content Officer, and other guests, that “you are sometimes introduced as one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, but in reality you are one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, regardless of gender.”
And it’s true.

Christopher Nolan kicked off his Dark Knight trilogy with 2005’s Batman Begins. The film delved into the origins of Bruce Wayne as a child, confronting his fears and slowly growing up to be the vigilante we know as Batman. The trilogy became the most celebrated superhero trilogies of all time, exploring the characters’ eccentricities in a grounded and nuanced way.

Tom Hardy loves to keep his social circle small, and during his initial years in Hollywood, he often didn’t engage in small talk with his fellow costars. This was reflected during his time in Star Trek: Nemesis, which remains his first and only appearance in the franchise, as Hardy would spend most of his time in his trailer when the cameras were off.
As a result, his costar Patrick Stewart thought he might never hear of the Venom star again after Nemesis, as the actor hardly communicated with his costars on set.

George Clooney has been many things in his career, an Oscar-winning actor and producer, a nominated director, and a humanitarian. However, one thing he could not pull off was being a successful Batman. While he was perfect on paper for the role of the vigilante, the odds were stacked against him as he was cast in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin.
The film has received extremely negative reviews and led to the reboot of the franchise with Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. However, the actor seems to have found one fan in Josh Brolin, who played Cable in Deadpool 2 and Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. He was reportedly also up for Batman in the Dceu, which Ben Affleck played.

Filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan are known for pushing the boundaries in blockbuster filmmaking as they bring in original ideas and mount them on a large scale. While the directors have grown to be critical favorites, they also seem to have won the box office race with their original films.
Among these legends, Christopher Nolan seems to have gained the top spot in one category. With four of his original films grossing over $500 million at the box office, Nolan beat Spielberg and Roland Emmerich to gain the top spot. The Oscar-winner is the only filmmaker to have achieved this feat with movies that are not comic adaptations, reboots, or sequels.

Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” has long been one of unscripted television’s most formally adventurous series, with a cinematic grammar that constantly evolves to express the feelings and ideas at each season’s center. Last season, for example, editor Jesse Friedman explored the “Scandoval” situation in which longtime cast member Tom Sandoval cheated on his girlfriend Ariana Madix by telling the story in reverse — a technique that had more in common with the work of Christopher Nolan and Harold Pinter than with other shows in the world of reality TV, and one that provided the perfect visual corollary for Ariana and her friends’ piecing together of the narrative. For the Season 11 finale, Friedman once again took some audacious stylistic risks that paid off not only emotionally, but indicated how the show as a whole might be coming to the end of an era.

Emily Blunt was last seen in the action comedy The Fall Guy, in which she starred opposite Ryan Gosling. The film satirically depicted many of the behind-the-scenes incidents that occur on the sets of large-scale blockbuster films of the present day. Blunt played the role of a director who was helming an epic sci-fi fantasy in the film.
Though diverse, Blunt’s filmography is lacking in the superhero genre. While the actress has been in musicals and adventure films, she has yet to don a costume, which she revealed in a recent interview that she wears as a badge of honor. However, Blunt was almost cast as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and had to give up on the opportunity due to contractual obligations.

There is one masterpiece that continues to cast a long, illustrious shadow over the film industry: Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel The Godfather.
Isn’t it remarkable how a film can so thoroughly capture the collective imagination, resonating with audiences decade after decade? Steeped in authenticity, the 1972 gangster masterpiece is heralded as one of the most acclaimed films of all time, etching its lines, scenes, and characters into the very fabric of cinematic history.

Take Coppola’s ensemble cast, which starred Diane Keaton, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and Robert Duvall. The latter played Tom Hagen, the unofficially adopted son of Vito Corleone, played by Brando. Well, his portrayal of Tom in Paramount Pictures’ series is iconic, and it’s no surprise that his favorite scene from the film revolves around the revelation that he is the adopted son.

"This isn't art. It isn't even great trash. It's a con game, and we bear the claw marks." That's what critic Rita Kempley wrote for the Washington Post in a particularly scathing review of Roland Emmerich's 1998 movie, "Godzilla." It was the first attempt by Hollywood to bring the classic monster to life in America, and it was a spectacular failure. That's what Warner Bros., Legendary, and director Gareth Edwards were working against while crafting 2014's "Godzilla." Skepticism was built in. They had to prove that a film within this franchise made outside of Japan could work.
They did that and then some.

Universal chairman Donna Langley oversaw a record year for the studio last year, finishing No. 1 at the box office and closing out awards season with seven Oscars including best picture for Christopher Nolan’s billion dollar grosser Oppenheimer. Even with that level of success, Langley prefers to have “healthy competitors” around her in Hollywood because it’s “just better for the business.”
Which is why she says it’s “sad” to see the state of the industry right now with a potential sale of Paramount Pictures looming and continued challenges facing the theatrical marketplace. “Consolidation is inevitable,” Langley told Variety co-editor in chief Ramin Setoodeh on Saturday afternoon in Cannes during a special Women in Motion conversation presented by Kering. The luxury group is honoring Langley on Sunday evening at its Women in Motion Awards for her recent run. “I’m not suggesting it’s Paramount but there’ll just be further consolidation.

Paramount Global may be a direct competitor, but NBCUniversal Studio group chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley will be disappointed if the media giant goes away.
“It’s sad,” Langley said at the Kering Women in Motion talk at the Cannes Film Festival, noting that a sale of Paramount means there will be fewer Hollywood studios. “These companies have been great and I’m a big believer in this competitive landscape — kind of ‘all boats will rise. There’s enough to go around.’ I like having healthy competitors; it’s much more fun and interesting and it’s just best for the business.”
Paramount has been entertaining offers in recent months, with companies like Skydance and Sony circling the studio. Langley is hopeful that the deal will be finished by the end of the year. “It’s enough already reading about this,” she said. “No one really knows what’s happening.

Watching movies on the big screen is an indulgence these days. Everyone prefers sitting in their homes, opening Netflix or Prime or any other streaming site, and watching whatever they feel like. But seems like viewers will have to indulge a little more than usual if they want to experience movies and not just watch them. Just ask Christopher Nolan, and he can tell you all about the IMAX experience.

And now, others are looking to emulate the same in their movie-making. In their 2025 slate, IMAX will be releasing no less than 14 movies in their “filmed for IMAX” format. And out of these 14, 5 of them are superhero flicks from both Dcu and the MCU. Looks like it will be less of Netflix and more of IMAX for next year.

“Jaws” in 1975 is remembered as the movie that birthed the summer global blockbuster; its many children include “Star Wars,” Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Top Gun,” “Ghostbusters,” “Ghost,” “Twister,” “The Lion King,” “Independence Day,” “Speed,” and “Men in Black.” Today, that bloodline is threatened with extinction.
On the surface, that seems ridiculous — summer box office is still defined by blockbusters — but today that means sequels. It’s become exceedingly rare for studios to invest over $100 million in a summer movie with an original screenplay that’s not already part of a franchise. That’s what makes Paramount Pictures’ $110 million “If” such an outlier.
Still, being that exception also hands writer-director John Krasinski a double-edged sword. Those original blockbusters — all released between 1975-1999 — ended up with domestic gross totals, in 2024 ticket price terms, of over $400 million. Consensus on opening weekend for “If” has been around $40 million,...

Martin Scorsese is acknowledged for his multiple collaborations with two of Tinseltown’s finest leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio & Robert De Niro. As giants in their field, they’ve individually contributed to Scorsese with masterful performances that have shaken audiences and critics alike.
Yet, having already gifted us cinematic treasures like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, Scorsese once found himself at a harrowing crossroads. Is a masterpiece really born out of a personal crisis? Well, the answer lies in Scorsese’s own phoenix-like rise from the ashes of adversity, as he faced a dire period marred by substance abuse, depression, and the chilly reception of his bold musical New York, New York.

It took a hospital bed realization and the profound intervention of his artistic compatriot, Robert De Niro, to channel his turbulent experience into the creation of Raging Bull.

Over the last two decades, Christopher Nolan’s name has been solidified as one of the most distinct minds that has emerged in modern filmmaking. The filmmaker’s career is on a roll as he went from doing low-budget indie films to creating Oppenheimer which had an explosive effect on the film industry. Nolan is notorious for pushing the limits of filmmaking.

In each of his films, he would push the idea to its limits as he keeps bringing something new to the table; such was the case with his 2014 sci-fi drama Interstellar, featuring Matthew McConaughey in the lead. The film was something that had never been seen before in the history of filmmaking. The film was praised by everyone, including Quentin Tarantino praising the director for his imaginative skills and creative vision.

The blockbuster franchises are showing signs of serious wear and tear, so why don’t the studios take on newer worlds created by the likes of Christopher Nolan and Alex Garland?
Some of the greatest genre movies of all time are sequels. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back; Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; The Godfather Part II; The Dark Knight; Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow. Ok, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea. There is absolutely no reason that lightning can’t strike twice, or even three, four, five, six times, if the will and creative verve are in place.
And yet there is also a law of diminishing returns. This week Planet of the Apes writer-producer team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver revealed that they are planning another five films in the dystopian sci-fi series, after the barnstorming box office and critical success...

IMAX reveals a sizeable list of films coming to the format in 2025: here’s what to expect and when to expect it.
When it was reported around this time last year that Tom Cruise was engaged in a rather ‘spirited’ series of conversations with studio executives regarding Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning's IMAX allocation, it ushered into the foreground a fact that had steadily been emerging over the last few years.
The IMAX technology (and ticket price uplift that accompanies it) has established itself as something of a kingmaker in Hollywood. Studios that can secure the longest IMAX runs for their films can gain a much-needed commercial edge over their rivals.
Such was the case with Dead Reckoning, as the film’s brief IMAX window was surely a factor in it being beaten at the box office by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a movie mostly featuring people in rooms talking.

While 3D cinema had come and gone in popularity, one premium screen that was made popular by Christopher Nolan’s attempt to use the technology is IMAX. Originally, the special cameras and format were meant for nature & science documentaries. The picture quality was unlike any that was seen before in order to capture the immense detail in every facet of the natural life on Earth. Then, Nolan had taken to using it for his blockbuster sequel, The Dark Knight, and crews of camera operators and projectionists would have to learn to utilize the practice for general audience movies.
The format has since taken off and has become a more luxurious and immersive way to watch a movie. This is especially if the film were a special effects-laden narrative that aims to take you on a journey onto a bigger plane. The practice has become more and more common in Hollywood with their big movies,...

In the quest to capture the essence of the Dark Knight, could anyone overlook Christopher Nolan’s valiant effort in Batman Begins, which starred Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne?
Injecting a dose of realistic, gritty realism into a genre often draped in escapism, Nolan’s 2005 flick definitely left an indelible mark. Yet, it was a single scene that kept it from fully resonating with Batman’s lore custodian, Bruce Timm.
The acclaimed animator (best known as the head producer of Batman: The Animated Series) once pointed out that while Nolan borrowed elements from Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One—a masterpiece in its own right—alterations were made that distanced the film from its source material’s raw authenticity.

Following the global success of Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two, Imax is looking forward to its biggest ever “filmed for Imax” slate in 2025, including at least 14 titles currently shooting with Imax film or Imax-certified digital cameras, which are due for release next year.
The company said today that the 2025 slate more than doubles any previous year in its history, as Hollywood and overseas filmmakers and studios increasingly create for its platform. (Scroll down for the full 2025 roster.)
The increase in Imax-focused production follows a run of historic box office success for films shot with its proprietary cameras despite its nearly 1,700 commercial locations accounting for less than 1% of total screens worldwide.
Recent highlights include over 20% of the global box office ($190M+) on Universal’s Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan shot the Oscar winner entirely with Imax film cameras. It’s the fifth highest grossing Imax movie of all time.

Imax is going big for 2025, unveiling on Thursday that it will release at least 14 titles in its “filmed for Imax” slate, features shot on Imax film or Imax-certified cameras, more than double that of any previous year.
Among the highlights going out on the wide-screen format will be Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World, The Fantastic Four, and Tron: Ares; Warner Bros.’ still-untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan feature and its DC release Superman; Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8; and Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon. (See full slate with release dates below).
Earlier, Imax said that Francis Ford Coppola’s Cannes entry Megalopolis would get a global Imax release.
Imax is coming off the success of 2023 wide-screen releases such as Oppenheimer — which generated more than $190 million worldwide, some 20 percent of its overall gross, on Imax screens — and Dune: Part 2 (21 percent, $145 million). Oppenheimer was the fifth-highest-grossing Imax film of all time.

We've been hearing for years about the death of DVD and Blu-ray. The physical media market is not what it once was, with hardcore collectors driving new business and impressive new 4K releases of classics and new movies aimed at a small but loyal section of consumers. Sales of DVD and Blu-ray discs were down 25% in 2023, even though home entertainment -- driven in large part by VOD -- was up 16.8% to $43 billion.
