Mike Judge and his Office Space cast reunited at South by Southwest Film & TV Festival for a panel discussion March 9 sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter about the beloved and influential film — a title that arguably reinvented the workplace comedy for the modern age and popularized the concept of quiet quitting. While the panel discussion tackled several intriguing aspects about the film’s creation and reception (some highlights below), Judge revealed a few extra tidbits at the post-panel reception at Austin’s The Statesman restaurant.
Asked if there was anything he would change about the film (which was famously difficult to get made, with the writer-director fending off a blizzard of studio executive Tps reports, er, notes), Judge offhandedly noted he hasn’t seen his film since before it was released in 1999. Everybody in earshot of this (including star Ron Livingston) looked surprised, given the film initially flopped at the box...

"Office Space," Mike Judge's satirical take on white collar office culture, disappointed at the box office but soon became a cult favorite after it arrived in 1999. That was mostly thanks to home video sales and Comedy Central airing the film multiple times after its theatrical run. But "Office Space" thoroughly deserved whatever cult status it attained, because it always felt very much ahead of its time.
The film stars Ron Livingston as Peter Gibbons, a put-upon programmer who spends his days amid the bleakly oppressive environs of software company Initech. After being hypnotized to stop caring about his job, Peter takes a lackadaisical approach to work and surprisingly begins to climb his way up the corporate ladder. But when his colleagues Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) and Michael Bolton (David Herman) are fired, Peter and his friends mastermind a plan to steal money from Initech via a software virus. The...

Office Space is celebrating its 25th anniversary following its delayed path to success, although hopefully no one would get their ass kicked for saying something like that.
Released Feb. 19, 1999, director Mike Judge’s enduring and endlessly quotable workplace satire follows computer programmer Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston), who decides to stop caring about his day job and teams up with Initech co-workers Michael Bolton (David Herman) and Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) to defraud the company. The Fox comedy — featuring such on-the-rise performers as Jennifer Aniston, John C. McGinley, Gary Cole and Stephen Root — collected just $10 million at the time but became a cult favorite after finding a following through cable and home video.
Other standouts from the cast include Richard Riehle as engineer liaison Tom Smykowski, who defends his job (“I have people skills!”) to Paul Willson and McGinley as the two Bobs who are put in charge of layoffs. In...

A Washington state software engineer stole more than 300,000 from the company he worked for in a scheme inspired by the film “Office Space.”
Ermenildo “Ernie” Castro was charged last week with first-degree theft and first-degree identity theft for manipulating programming code, allowing him to change prices and steal shipping fees charged to customers of the e-commerce company Zulily.
Police discovered a file on his work computer titled “Office Space Project” that laid out the scheme. According to court documents, he later admitted to drawing inspiration from the film.
Castro launched the scheme in February 2022 by installing “three types of malicious code in the checkout process,” police detectives stated. He made further modifications in March and April once other employees picked up on discrepancies between the amount customers were billed and charges to their credit cards. Over a five-month period, Castro interfered with more than 30,000 transactions.

Exclusive: Two years ago, a West End staging of a new play based on Hollywood producer Robert Evans’ classic Hollywood memoir The Kid Stays In The Picture seemed all but certain for an imminent transfer to Broadway. Strong reviews, a sold-out run, rampant press rumors of a transfer, a name director in Simon McBurney, the stateside-friendly subject matter, the direct involvement of Evans himself and London’s Royal Court Theatre’s then-recent record of well-received New York transfers combined to make the Hollywood tale seem like a perfect Broadway baby.
Then, nothing.
Well, nothing but rumors, and, given the book’s troubled stage adaptation history, for understandable reason. An earlier adaptation of Evans’ memoir had spectacularly flamed out, with a prominent playwright – Jon Robin Baitz – and director – Richard Eyre – bolting from the project. Reports suggested even Evans himself was ready to walk, at one point seeming,...

“Office Space” celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and those Tps reports are still missing. To mark the occasion, Richard Linklater moderated a Q&A session with Mike Judge, Ron Livingston, Gary Cole, David Herman, and Ajay Naidu hosted by the Austin Film Society. The full transcript of their talk has been shared exclusively with IndieWire, and if you could read it by the end of the day, that’d be great:
Richard Linklater: How awesome was this, people, to watch this beautiful 35mm print with these guys here?
Applause.
Richard: I just wanted to ask each of you, I’m just curious, when was the last time you saw the film with an audience in its entirety like this? And what do you make of it? You have an interesting perspective having done it, how is it aging in your perception? When did you realize what it was becoming?...

Mike Judge’s workplace satire “Office Space,” which celebrates its 20th anniversary Feb. 19, was a bona fide box office flop when it grossed a measly $10.8 million in 1999. But once the comedy was discovered on DVD and cable, “Office Space” became a cult sensation, spreading concepts like “flair” and “assclown” across pop culture.
The now-classic comedy will be celebrated at the upcoming Texas Film Awards, where it will be inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame. Judge and the cast will reunite for a screening and panel March 7 in Austin.
Servers at T.G.I. Friday’s might want to raise a glass to “Office Space,” because according to a 2004 New York Magazine interview with Judge, the restaurant not only got rid of its dorky striped shirts but also the mandatory flurry of pins and buttons — known as “flair” — a few years after the film was released.

Lisa Spinelli (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a good person. She’s a loving mother, a caring wife, and, as the titular educator in “The Kindergarten Teacher,” a dedicated professional. She has endless patience for her students, even as she fills their juice cups up for the thousandth time.
And yet.
Who could fill a juice cup a thousand times, without going a little crazy? Watch her teenage children grow up and move on, without her heart breaking? Or look at her worn-out spouse and her worn-in Staten Island home, and not wish for more?

A remake of the Israeli film of the same name, Sara Colangelo’s The Kindergarten Teacher pulls no punches. It leans full-tilt into its disturbing premise: a veteran kindergarten teacher becomes obsessed with a young student who has a gift for poetry. Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as the titular teacher and is the perfect actress for something like this. She plays every moment starkly sincere, ultimately to a fault.
There’s a tonal problem running throughout this picture that’s hard to reconcile. Lisa Spinelli (Gyllenhaal) has been a teacher for twenty years, commuting into the city from Staten Island, where she’s got a husband (Michael Chernus) and two teenage kids. Still determined to be a poet, she takes a night class taught by Gael García Bernal.
Despite her best attempts, Lisa’s poetry is soundly dismissed by teacher and students alike. Cue 5-year old Jimmy Roy (Parker Sevak), a...

Funny or Die has done what everyone's thought of doing since Office Space first taught America about about pieces of flair and and how to properly say "Ummm" in 1999: Replace the character Michael Bolton with the actual Michael Bolton.

1999 will always be one of my favorite years for movies. This is partially because there were a lot of great movies released that year, but mainly because in 1999 I was in high school, and as we all know, the world was more important and less terrible when we were in high school. Last week, I took a look at which movies from 1999 had aged well, and asked which had aged poorly. The response was overwhelming, insofar as it's overwhelming that anyone likes American Beauty. However, one reader email in particular struck me as a launchpad for an important conversation. Here...

Although Office Space wasn't a mega-hit in theaters, the workplace comedy has become a cult classic. The 1999 movie, shot in Austin and Dallas, has lent such lines to the lexicon as "Looks like someone has the case of the Mondays." Mike Judge's first full-length live-action movie follows the plight of workers at a generic white-collar company called Initech.
Office drone Peter (Ron Livingston) has a job he hates, stuck in a cubicle across from a lady who repetitively answers her phone in a high-pitched tone, overseen by eight bosses -- one of which is Lumbergh (Gary Cole in ginormous specs). Peter's work buddies are Samir (Ajay Naidu) and Michael Bolton (David Herman), both of whom constantly vent frustrations on their wonky fax machine. Bolton is beleagured by folks who ask if he's related to the singer. When asked why he won't go by Mike instead, he responds, "Why should I change,...

Given that he's one of the more diverse and prolific filmmakers out there, it's been a disappointingly long four years without a new movie from Richard Linklater ("Me and Orson Welles" premiered at Tiff in 2008). Fortunately, the Austin, Texas-based filmmaker is back with "Bernie," a dark comedy which reunites him with two of his most memorable leads, Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, that has picked up strong reviews and, opening in limited release last Friday, has been performing surprisingly well at the box office.
With "Bernie" expanding wider this weekend (read our review), it seemed like the perfect time to look over Linklater's diverse and eclectic career. He'd already made his mark by founding the Austin Film Society in 1985 (which has gone on to be the center of the industy in the Texas city), but since his debut with an ultra-low-budget student film in 1988, Linklater's tackled everything from romance to...

Vancouver, Canada – Providing a forum for independent North American Asian filmmakers, the upcoming Vancouver Asian Film Festival (Vaff) will offer audiences a diverse selection of shorts and full features.
Celebrating its 15th year, the festival’s theme for 2011, ‘Love Letters to Vancouver’, ties in with the city of Vancouver’s 125th birthday celebration. The plywood background for the program guide cover may seem familiar because it was inspired after the Canucks riot when everyone wrote their ‘Love Letters’ to the city on the plywood covering broken windows and doors.
With almost 60 films and over 60 diverse Asian filmmakers, actors and special guests scheduled to attend this year’s festival, this is the largest Vancouver Asian Film festival to date.
Here are a few Vaff 2011 films we are looking forward to:

Mike Judge's Office Space may have failed to make much of a dent at the box office. But it's endured as one of the best comedies of recent times. And, has Gary Cole ever been better?
2001 was a golden year for British comedy, introducing the world to the sardonic wit of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and their magnum opus, The Office. Heralded by critics the world over, and garlanded with enough awards to sink a cruise liner, the show was rightly praised for its acutely observed, often scathing portrayal of office life.
The pompous, self-absorbed management, the irrational irritation caused by your workmate's mildly annoying ticks and habits, the general apathy of the underpaid, overworked office workforce, nothing was missed by the Gervais and Merchant microscope of mirth. The duo has received endless praise ever since for shining a spotlight on the horrors of the workplace, but they...

Black Swan is the fifth feature to come from the lunatic vision of Darren Aronofsky and with his first Oscar nomination pending, let's look back on his career. While Natalie Portman is front and center for the entire hit movie and Mickey Rourke had a similarly feature-length closeup in The Wrestler, Aronofsky is the star of all five pictures. If not, he has to be considered the co-lead. He's not invisible as a director is the point even though he's not onscreen. But which faces has he used the most to sell his masterpieces and/or follies (depending on your point of view)?

The Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council (Miaac) film festival is about to launch its tenth annual program of films, panels, and parties in New York this week. The festival is being held at the Sva Theater and is taking place on November 10th through the 14th. There is a huge world of Indian cinema beyond Bollywood and each of India's 22 or so official languages has at least one film industry. Though much of the truly original and sophisticated Indian cinema of the 21st century is created outside of the big Bombay studios, many wonderful movies go unseen outside their own regions, even in India. Miaac started bringing independent, "regional," and diasporic/multicultural films -- as well as the occasional well-chosen Bollywood bouquet of delights -- to a smart and engaged Manhattan audience long before the now-big-news "Hindie" independent movement took off, and long before the Miaac festival itself introduced such memorable...
