By now, you should be aware that Nick Cave is more than just a singer/songwriter, artist, and musician. On top of his many bands, The Bad Seeds, Birthday Party, and his solo projects, Cave has been involved in dozens of film projects; he and creative partner Warren Ellis have scored over two dozen films—for filmmakers like John Hillcoat, David McKenzie, David Michôd, and Taylor Sheridan—and he’s been the featured player in two documentaries by Andrew Dominik (Cave and Ellis’ score to the “Assassination of Jesse James” remains one of the decades best).

ABC’s legendary sudser “General Hospital” is looking to defend its crown at the Daytime Emmys, landing 19 nominations this year — the most of any program — as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced contenders for the landmark 50th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
Last year, “General Hospital” was the big winner with five awards — including best daytime drama — as the telecast returned to a live, in-person event. This time out, NATAS first revealed multiple categories Tuesday night via various entertainment shows, and it looked like CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” — also in the middle of its 50th anniversary celebration — had taken an early lead.
But after all was tallied, CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” was actually next in line, with 14 nods, followed by “The Young and the Restless” (13), NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” (11) and the most-honored non-serial, the syndicated “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” also with 11.

The Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on CBS in 2021 and 2022, as the Eye network struck a two-year deal with the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).
That means this year, CBS has both the Daytime and Primetime Emmys — the first time in more than a decade that one network will broadcast both ceremonies. The CW has renewed two of its alternative series. Penn & Teller: Fool Us, which the network says is its highest-performing unscripted series, has been renewed for an eighth cycle. New clip show World’s Funnies Animals, whose November 27 telecast logged the network’s best series performance in the time slot in almost two years, will return for a second cycle.
Penn & Teller: Fool Us and World’s Funnies Animals were among four alternative series on the CW’s pandemic-proof fall 2020 schedule that fill five out of 12 hours weekly. There is no renewal decision yet on the other two, CW veterans Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Masters of Illusion.
Penn & Teller and Whose Line also are on the CW’s January schedule; the second half of Penn & Teller‘s seventh cycle premieres January 8.

David McKenzie, an Emmy-winning producer and president of the production company Associated Television International Inc., is a prominent figure in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit against the National Rifle Association, according to the Wall Street Journal.
As the Journal reported on Friday, McKenzie is not explicitly named in the lawsuit but is the “principal stakeholder in several businesses that have business relationships with the NRA” that received over $100 million from the NRA.
The suit also said that “principal stakeholder” paid for NRA CEO Wayne Lapierre’s trips to the Bahamas, that Lapierre used the stakeholder’s 108-foot yacht, which is “equipped with four staterooms, a 16-foot jet boat, and two jet skis” and that Lapierre flew on a private jet to see McKenzie in Los Angeles at least 20 times from 2013 to 2017.

When the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences began discussing a return to broadcast TV for the Daytime Emmys with CBS last year, the org never could have expected that it would be under these circumstances. But now, NATAS and telecast producer Associated Television Inc. (Ati) are looking at the necessary changes in a Covid-19 world as a chance to reinvent the show.
“Certainly, this is a new and unique experience for us, but it’s one that also carries a lot of opportunity, an opportunity to be a more intimate, tighter broadcast, and one that can be really engaging for the audience,” says Adam Sharp, president and CEO, NATAS.
This year’s 47th Daytime Emmys, which air June 26 on the Eye network, will be pre-taped and shot from various stars’ homes with the women of “The Talk” serving as hosts. To keep the element of surprise, presenters will tape...

The show must go on! Coronavirus be damned.
The Daytime Emmys will be aired live on television, on my birthday no less, but with an entirely different look than previous years.
So, daytime TV fans, you finally have something quasi-normal to look forward to in this weird new way of life.
CBS will air the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards as a two-hour Live show on Friday, June 26, beginning at 8/7c.
The event is going virtual because the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences was forced to cancel its planned event, which would have been a lot more interesting.
For the first time, they had planned a three-night event that was set to take place from June 12-14.
An entire weekend was set aside to celebrate the diversity and talents of daytime television, an honor that would have given more of the nominees and winners a chance to bask in their success.

The Daytime Emmy Awards are heading back to TV. Nine years after the kudocast last aired on a broadcast network — and five years after it was last on TV — CBS will once again telecast the Daytime Emmys, to be held on Friday, June 26.
CBS last aired the Daytime Emmys in 2011. The telecast then moved to cable in 2012 and 2013 (Hln) and was last seen on TV in 2015, via Pop TV. After that, it’s been relegated to online, via YouTube, Facebook and Knekt-TV streams.
The Daytime Emmys has nonetheless maintained a bit of a relationship with CBS in recent years, as it continued to announce its nominees exclusively on the Eye network’s “The Talk.” This year, the 47th annual Daytime Emmy nominations will still be revealed on “The Talk” and CBS-owned Et Online, via an announcement on Thursday.

During the regular TV season, The CW rolls out mostly scripted dramas to win its modest slice of the Nielsen ratings pie. In the summertime though, they tend to shake things up. The littlest network airs docu-series about death, improv series, magic shows, British and Canadian imports, and under-performing, critically acclaimed original fare that couldn't quite earn its keep during the cooler months. With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’re highlighting the noteworthy titles that have recently hit platforms. Check out this week’s selections below and an archive of past round-ups here.
City of God (Fernando Meirelles)
For any number of reasons, crime sagas that earn a Goodfellas comparison would not strike the average viewer as a prime candidate. Yet Fernando Meirelles, not nearly as good ever since, gives a story of Brazilian debauchery its human core in the form of a young, ambitious, wholly relatable boy evolving into manhood under what, we’re led to feel, are the worst conditions known to man. That we’ll likely never know many (or all) of the situations that play out herein makes City of God’s reverberations an even greater miracle. – Nick N.

Complain all you want about Netflix, and yes, some of those grievances are absolutely, legitimate, but there’s no denying, some of the problems with their release strategies they have a terrific fall slate. They have/are releasing movies by the Coen Brothers, Jeremy Saulnier, David McKenzie, Alfonso Cuaron and more. And given that line-up, they have a strong shot at the Oscars this year (aside from documentaries where they’ve always been strong), perhaps for the first time ever.

Just ahead of its fall season rollout, which launches tonight, the CW is already looking ahead, announcing its 2019 summer programming lineup. It features six original series — one new and five returning — including three acquired dramas, as the CW has renewed all of its summer 2018 series. It is one of the CW’s biggest slates of original shows specifically designated for the off-season. The network has acquired British action drama Bulletproof from Sky Vision and ordered second seasons of legal drama Burden of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, and fantasy-adventure series The Outpost. The CW has also ordered new seasons of the hit magic series Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Masters Of Illusion, and the classic improv comedy Whose Line Is It Anyway? all set for premiere in summer 2019. Premiere dates and times will be announced later.
Bulletproof, from Vertigo Films and Company Pictures, follows two undercover cops, Bishop and Pike as they chase down hardened criminals in London’s East End. Pike is an aspirational family man, the son of a decorated police officer who is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, but not be in his shadow. Meanwhile, Bishop grew up in care homes and on the streets, and never knew his father. Despite these differences Bishop and Pike are bonded by the same moral code and work brilliantly well together even when the chemistry between them looks set to explode.
Allan Niblo Michele Buck Judy Counihan Nick Love Noel Clarke, and Ashley Walters executive produce. The series was co-funded by Sky’s distribution arm, Sky Vision, who control international rights.
Burden Of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, is a serialized investigative drama about life-altering legal cases. IFC Films and Entertainment One produces in association with Eagle Vision Inc. with executive producers Ilana Frank, Adam Pettle, Jocelyn Hamilton, Linda Pope and Kristin Kreuk.
Created by Kynan Griffin and Jason Faller, The Outpost, a fantasy-adventure series from Electric Entertainment and Arrowstorm Entertainment, executive producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner, follows Talon (Jessica Green), the lone survivor of a race called the “Blackbloods.” In a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world, Talon must learn to master her supernatural powers, and ally with a Queen who has been in hiding to defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator. Jake Stormoen, Imogen Waterhouse and Anand Desai-Barochia alsp star.
The Outpost also is executive produced by Electric Entertainment’s team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan-Wilson and by Arrowstorm Entertainment’s team of Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin, the team behind the cult favorite Mythica films. Jennifer Griffin of Arrowstorm Entertainment is also producing.
Penn & Teller: Fool Us is a one-hour competition series celebrating magic and featuring the legendary duo Penn & Teller. Hosted by actress Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), the series is created and executive produced by Penn Jillette, Teller, Peter Adam Golden and Andrew Golder in association with 1/17 Productions and September Films (part of Dcd Media).
Hosted by actor Dean Cain (Supergirl), Masters of Illusion features amazing magic performed by cutting-edge illusionists and escape artists, and performers in each episode displaying skills ranging from perplexing interactive mind magic to hilarious comedy routines. The series hails from Associated Television International with executive producers David McKenzie, Gay Blackstone, David Martin and Al Schwartz, along with co-executive producer Jim Romanovich.
Whose Line Is It Anyway?, based on the hit UK format and hosted by comedian Aisha Tyler, features cast members Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. Along with a special guest comedian in each episode, the cast members put their comedic skills to the test through a series of spontaneous improv games. Series creators Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson executive produce with Jimmy Mulville, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. Whose Line Is It Anyway? hails from Angst Productions and Hat Trick Productions.

Oscar season just had a delicious appetizer. Now comes the all-you-can-eat buffet.
That’s the role that the Toronto International Film Festival plays in awards season: It’s an abundance of riches, an 11-day blowout in which just about every Oscar contender that isn’t still in the editing room will unveil itself in front of the international press and a bunch of movie fans.
As always, Toronto opens on the Thursday after Labor Day, just a few days after the conclusion of the Telluride Film Festival and a week after the opening of the Venice Film Festival. Those two fests have already showcased a good number of awards movies — and this year, they’ve given fans of quality cinema an unexpectedly rich array of films, to judge from the reactions coming from the canals of Italy and the hills of Colorado.

With the sudden departure of director Danny Boyle from “Bond 25” over “creative differences” with franchise producers Barbara Broccoli, Michael Wilson, and star/co-producer Daniel Craig, what happens now? (Update: The Telegraph reported that the split was due to Craig’s objection to Boyle’s casting of Tomasz Kot from “Cold War” as the Russian baddie in the modern-day Cold War plot.)
Keep in mind that production was scheduled to start in December, with a domestic release date of November 8, 2019 (through MGM). That doesn’t leave much time to find a replacement director, with two UK rising action directors, Yann Demange and David McKenzie, as the top contenders. The betting money, by the way, is on quirky and well-respected Brit Demange.
Complicating matters, though, is the fact that Boyle brought his own radical twist to the table, working closely with his chum and long-time collaborator, “Trainspotting” series scribe John Hodge,...

On July 28, 1999, insurance executive Paul Scott Howell was shot in the head and robbed of his Gmc Suburban in his parents' driveway in Edmond, Ok. The 45-year-old was returning from a back-to-school shopping trip with his two young daughters and his sister. Nearly two-and-a-half years later, 21-year-old Julius Jones was convicted of first-degree murder in the case, as well as conspiracy to commit a felony. He was a University of Oklahoma freshman on a Presidential Leadership Scholarship at the time. And now, after nearly two decades on death row, Jones is the subject of national news again as one of the subjects of new ABC docu-series The Last Defense. Like Darlie Routier, the other death-row inmate profiled on the series, Jones has always maintained his innocence. During his trial, his attorneys put the blame on Jones' co-defendant, then-22-year-old Christopher Jordan, who had admitted to telling different stories. In his closing argument,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Damnation’s” first two episodes, “Sam Riley’s Body” and “Whose Side Are You On?”]
As IndieWire wrote in its initial review of USA Network’s new Depression-era series, “Damnation” is anything but subtle. People die — a lot, horribly, and sometimes, even their corpses are carted around and posed a la Christ on the cross. Brothers pull guns on each other because their mutual hatred runs as deep as the Grand Canyon. Checking a man for infections at a local brothel includes pouring Listerine over his crotch. “Damnation” is a blunt, equal-opportunity offensive pulp Western, which is why the introduction of two potential romantic partners is the least romantic meet-cute ever imagined.
Loner Creeley Turner (Logan Marshall-Green), aka The Cowboy, wanders into Holden, Iowa in 1931. Sent by the Pinkerton agency to furtively take down unionization efforts by the local farmers, Creeley sets up shop in the most peculiar way: He goes to a roomful of prostitutes at the town’s brothel and holds up a...
