Sandra Oh has come to realize that with great power comes great responsibility. Since wrapping up her run as Dr. Cristina Yang on the venerable ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy a decade ago, Oh has looked to champion stories that deconstruct and explore the nuances of Asian American identity.
Her latest TV project, The Sympathizer, which recently wrapped up its run on HBO, makes good on that promise. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen and co-created for television by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, the seven-part limited series tells the story of a man known simply as The Captain (Hoa Xuande), a police captain for South Vietnam who has actually been working as an undercover agent for North Vietnam’s Communist regime for years.

When Team Downey co-founder Susan Downey and president of production Amanda Burrell were approached with what would become “The Sympathizer,” it presented them and fellow co-founder and star Robert Downey Jr. with what Susan Downey calls “an excellent creative opportunity and challenge.” It also led to a question: “How are we going to pull this off?”
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Viet Thanh Nguyen and developed for television by acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar as well as A24, “The Sympathizer” is the kind of big-swing television show Team Downey has become known for getting behind, following projects like the acclaimed HBO series “Perry Mason” and the ongoing Netflix drama “Sweet Tooth” (which returns for its third and final season on June 6). The show focuses on an unnamed protagonist, called simply The Captain (breakout star Hoa Xuande), a North Vietnamese spy who infiltrated the South Vietnamese army...

Initially rising to fame with his 1992 comedy-drama Chaplin, which even led him to the Academy Awards, Robert Downey Jr. showcased immense talent in the industry. However, venturing a different route due to his addictions, the actor lost his way until 2003, when he finally came out drug-free and industry-ready.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains mild spoilers for “The Sympathizer,” Episode 7, “Endings Are Hard, Aren’t They?”]
In the end, “The Sympathizer” was not a show that kept things simple. An adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel, the HBO limited series helmed by filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar concludes in a way that reframes the events of its premiere episodes, and eventually arrives at a thesis that helps ease the protagonist’s internal tug-of-war.
According to star Hoa Xuande, putting an emphasis on the “nothing” in the phrase “Nothing is more important than independence and freedom” makes his character The Captain, a Communist spy embedded in the South Vietnamese army, who begins to lose himself when he’s forced to follow that community in exile in the United States, “realize that he’s been fighting for these things that have been out of his reach, that are just ideals that are unobtainable, and that...

Everyone knows that comedy can be socially dangerous, but what about when it's actually dangerous to a person's health? Physical comedy can require actors to put their bodies on the line in the name of laughs, and that means sometimes a comedian has to know when to take a step back and let a stunt person take the fall instead. After all, aside from maybe Johnny Knoxville, the most adept comedy stars still aren't trained in stunt work and could really hurt themselves. On the long-running FX sitcom series, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," there have been plenty of opportunities for the stars to show off their physical comedy chops and potentially put themselves in harm's way, but there was at least one stunt that was just way too much for septuagenarian actor Danny DeVito.
In an interview with The New York Times, "It's Always Sunny" stunt coordinator Marc Scizak...

Jackass star Johnny Knoxville is being sued for negligence and battery by TV producer Daniel Curry over an incident that occurred in 2022 involving a Taser.
According to a complaint filed through the Los Angeles County Superior Court, while Curry was working as a segment producer on the ABC series The Prank Panel. Knoxville allegedly “chased down and tased” him without any provocation. Knoxville was co-hosting the show with Eric Andre.
Curry now claims that the incident had caused him to experience “freezing, losing all motor skills and collapsing with his entire body in a rigid and tense state.” He also claims he broke his fibula and tore a ligament. Curry revealed that at least 25 people witnessed the incident.
Curry also charges that the companies ABC Signature and Jimmy Kimmel’s production company, Kimmelot, “collectively acted to ‘blacklist'” him after the incident, which negatively impacted his career.

Actor Johnny Knoxville has been hit with a $3 million lawsuit following accusations he attacked a “Prank Panel” segment producer, TheWrap has learned.
Daniel Curry – who also served as a creative consultant on ABC’s “The Prank Panel” – accused Knoxville of workplace harassment in his Thursday filing. The plaintiff also cited production houses ITV America and Kimmelot in the lawsuit.
Per court documents obtained by TheWrap, Knoxville allegedly entered video village and began harassing Curry with a taser while Curry fled, while still less than one week on the job. Curry says he was tased in the side while he and Knoxville were at a full run, which led to severe injuries when his body locked up and he fell. The documents state Curry broke his fibula and tore the ankle ligament in his right leg.

Less than a year after The Prank Panel debuted on ABC, star Johnny Knoxville is getting a shock that some jokes are just not so funny.
Not funny, and potentially quite expensive, to be clear.
The Jackass vet (real name Philip John Clap), ABC Signature Studios, ITV America, Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot shingle and others involved with the unscripted comedy series Prank Panel have been zapped with a $3 million negligence and battery lawsuit (read it here) from self-described “segment producer and creative consultant” Daniel Curry.
Seeking a jury trial, Dumb Ideas co-author Curry’s May 16 filing from Martorell Law in LA Superior Court lays out the taser attack the ex-segment producer says he was subjected to back in September 2022 on the Prank Panel set at Saticoy Studios in Van Nuys, CA. Sandra Oh's character in Grey's Anatomy, heart surgeon Cristina Yang, has a difficult personality and the ability to accept the blows of fate with dignity: she experienced the death of her father, a runaway bridegroom, unsuccessful pregnancies, and a plane crash.
Why Did Sandra Oh Leave Grey's Anatomy?
Sandra Oh began her career as a ballerina, but later decided to connect her life to the film industry. Unlike Ellen Pompeo, Sandra already had experience playing leading roles before filming Grey's Anatomy.
She starred in The Diary of Evelyn Lau and Bean, Last Night, The Red Violin and Waking the Dead. But her biggest work was of course Grey's Anatomy. Sandra was a member of the medical procedural cast for almost ten years: from 2005 to 2014.
However, in 2014, after ten seasons, the actress announced her departure from the television project. She felt that she had given her character everything she could...

Robert Doweny Jr. has been exposed to many different methods of acting over his lengthy career. From playing envious scientists to egotistical billionaires, he has certainly explored his range as an actor throughout his decades-long career. Despite this, it would seem that his latest work has taught him something that none in the past were able to.
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man
The Sympathizer follows a nameless protagonist played by Hoa Xuande named The Captain through seven episodes. In his escape from the Vietnam War to the United States, he encounters an awful lot of American men who look like Tony Stark. It is quite a well-known fact that Downey is playing four different characters in the miniseries. It is safe to say that executing this was not easy.

The satirical spy-thriller “The Sympathizer” hopes to make a mark at the Primetime Emmys this year, as HBO/Max has submitted the show for 27 Emmy categories. For those who remember, the game show Press Your Luck relied a lot on good timing. In a very roulette-like manner, contestants would watch squares on a board randomly be highlighted until they prompt it to stop in order to get the prize it halted on. An amazing episode in 1984 would have a contestant endlessly receiving good luck as he won big money every time he called, “Stop!” His fortune would be called into question as he would get accused of cheating on the show. Deadline has now shared the first look at Press Your Luck — a movie that will depict the events of that episode and all the controversy surrounding it, starring Paul Walter Hauser as the fateful contestant.
The synopsis, according to Deadline, reads,
“Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show Press Your Luck harboring a secret:...

Sunday’s episode of “The Sympathizer” saw The Captain (Hoa Xuande) go to work as an interpreter on auteur Nikos’ (Robert Downey Jr.) film about the Vietnam War.
Co-showrunner Park Chan-wook revealed in an interview with TheWrap that one key change that the series made from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pultizer Prize-winning source material was moving the location of the film’s set from the Philippines to California.
“I think in the original novel, because it’s inspired by ‘Apocalypse Now,’ they changed the Philippines into Vietnam. At regular opportunities, The Sympathizer likes to remind you not to blindly trust what you’re told. At the tail end of the Vietnam War, its narrator (Hoa Xuande), known only as The Captain, is being held in a North Vietnamese re-education camp, where he’s forced into confessing his story. As he recounts his years as a Communist spy, first infiltrating the South Vietnamese special police, then operating as a mole in America after the fall of Saigon, all while reporting back to the very people now holding him captive, The Captain repeatedly states that this is his version of events. Time rewinds as he rethinks his account, adding new details. We watch scenes that he admits he never witnessed. In war, there is no truth, only points of view.
The Sympathizer is a big, fiercely intelligent, often very funny, sometimes difficult drama.

Projects about the Vietnam War and its aftermath are so plentiful as to be practically their own genre, and they’ve starred a who’s who of Hollywood icons, including John Wayne, Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson and Christian Bale.
Notably missing from the casts — at least among the substantive speaking parts — have been performers of actual Vietnamese descent. That’s finally changed with The Sympathizer, HBO and A24’s limited series adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-winning novel. Robert Downey Jr. (who also executive produces) and Sandra Oh are the big names involved, but they are led by relative newcomer Hoa Xuande and joined by Vietnamese costars to tell a story about spycraft and personal and collective identity immediately following the conflict, centering the people whose lives and country were torn apart as a result.

Having spent many years as a fan of Jackass, I’ve always gravitated to the career of Johnny Knoxville. The actor has a new feature currently available for streaming or purchase on Prime, and frankly, he’s excellent in it. Sweet Dreams tells the story of Morris, a man who has found himself at a sober living facility. The film, written and directed by Lije Sparks, is a sweet, funny, and heartfelt tale, one that is utterly inspiring. The sports aspect is fun, as the group put together a ragtag softball team to save their place, but it’s also a serious work. Also starring Kate Upton, Bobby Lee, Jay Mohr, and Gata, it’s an inspiring film with a huge heart.
I’ve always enjoyed chatting with Mr. Knoxville, and this was no exception. Both Johnny and Mr. Sarki opened up about bringing a bit of positivity to those struggling with addiction.

After giving an outstanding performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and grabbing the Academy Awards for the Best Supporting Actor Robert Downey Jr. is all set to work on his new project, The Sympathizer. He is going to portray four different characters in the movie: a director, a congressional representative, a professor, and a CIA operative. This project is going to be one of the most difficult projects that the Iron Man actor has put his hands on.

Sweet Dreams follows an alcoholic as he coaches a misfit team of his fellow housemates while he stays at a sober living unit.
Lee spoke with uInterview founder Erik Meers about what drew him to the role. “The honest truth is I went into this movie because I’m sober, and it felt like doing a once-a-month AA retreat,” he said. “This movie is about service and love.”
GaTa reflected, “I think it was a great movie. I liked working with [Lee], I liked working with all the other cast members were very easy to work with I didn’t know what to expect, but I just know the most important thing about this movie was my connection to it, having a background I can relate to about addiction.”

It’s never easy finding that sweet spot between sentimentality and comedy, but it’s a line walked successfully by filmmaker Lije Sarki, in the gentle, at times poignant Sweet Dreams, which features Johnny Knoxville in a role far removed from that of which we’ve seen him undertake before.
To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of speaking to both Knoxville and Sarki together, as well as the two supporting actors Bobby Lee and GaTa. We discuss the film’s tonality, the fun that was had on set – and finally got to tell Knoxville all about ‘BillyBum’. It’ll make sense after you’ve seen the interview.

Follows Morris, who must coach a misfit softball team of his fellow housemates during his mandatory stay at Sweet Dreams sober living in order to get his life back on track.

Not long after winning an Oscar for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. is starring in perhaps his most challenging project to date: another high-profile one. The Iron Man star, 59, is starring in a new HBO Max series called The Sympathizer, in which, he is playing four antagonist roles combined.
In addition to playing a CIA agent, Downey Jr. portrays a professor, a congressman, and a film director (who was influenced by Francis Ford Coppola). Meanwhile, Hoa Xuande plays The Captain (a Vietnamese spy) in the HBO series, which is based on the critically acclaimed book of a similar title by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

If you felt the instinct to pause, rewind, or repeat part of the premiere to HBO’s “The Sympathizer” on its April 14 premiere, showrunner Park Chan-Wook is one step ahead of you.
The Korean director best known for films like “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden” and the recent “Decision to Leave” was a critical mind in shaping “The Sympathizer,” based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s bestseller, which required anticipating how the audience would receive the story. In Episode 1, we meet our unnamed protagonist, The Captain (Hoa Xuande), whose interrogation frames the flashbacks that follow.
The Captain’s confession was one element of adapting Nguyen’s story, Park told IndieWire over Zoom with a translator, but the second piece of that framework was particularly exciting: The Commandant’s (Quinn Hoàng) interruptions.
“Sometimes the commandant might get angry at the captain, or sometimes be criticizing — that is how he engages himself in this storytelling,...

Considering how many serious injuries the Jackass cast members have suffered over the years, one would think that even before Jackass Forever, they had reached the limit of their willingness to pull off dangerous stunts. Jackass Forever is the fourth movie in Jeff Tremaine’s reality comedy film series, which came after Jackass 3D (2010).
However, the filming process was interrupted by some of the ludicrous, and risky stunts that resulted in injuries to the main character of the franchise. Indeed, Johnny Knoxville earlier talked about the major bull stunt that caused him to suffer brain damage and has revealed whether or not he regrets being a part of such a risky act.

Actor Johnny Knoxville and director Lije Sarki reflected on the meaning of their new movie, Sweet Dreams, in their new uInterview.
Sweet Dreams follows a father (Knoxville) forced into rehab as he coaches a softball team of unconventional men in recovery.
When asked what drew him to the role, Knoxville told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “My dad was an alcoholic, a lot of my friends are in recovery. There’s been many times in my life where I distracted with this or that, so there was a lot of time of preparation for this role.”
Sarki, who wrote the movie inspired by his own experience with alcoholism, remembered one of his favorite scenes.

This The Sympathizer review contains no spoilers.
Celebrated South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook takes his auteur-driven vision to HBO with the new television series The Sympathizer. Adapting the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the series follows a Vietnamese double agent after he flees the country, finding himself drawn deep into a strange juxtaposition of espionage and Hollywood filmmaking. With its off-kilter tone and a quartet of wonderfully weird performances from co-star and executive producer Robert Downey, Jr., The Sympathizer may not be everyone’s cup of tea but, what it does, it does very well.

Robert Downey Jr. had some help from his children to prepare for his role in The Sympathizer.
The actor opened up to Extra at Tuesday’s Los Angeles premiere of the new HBO series about how his kids helped him shave his head for the role.

Fresh off of his Oppenheimer Oscar win, Robert Downey Jr. is playing not just one new character but four in upcoming HBO series The Sympathizer.
The series is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, which is set at the end of the Vietnam war and follows an unnamed spy known as The Captain (played by Hoa Xuande) who flees to the United States, where he continues to gather intelligence and report back to the Viet Cong. On September 15, Robert Downey Jr. will almost certainly take home his first Emmy as best supporting actor in a limited series for HBO’s The Sympathizer.
It will be the latest coronation in a year of coronations for a star who is undisputedly one of our finest, and it will be difficult to begrudge; what Downey does in The Sympathizer hits that sweet spot between “ridiculously entertaining” and “a whole lot of acting” that award-givers love.
But two things can be true: Downey’s performance in The Sympathizer can be saluted as a dexterous feat of actorly gymnastics. At the same time, it’s the misplaced fulcrum that too often causes this seven-episode adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to lose its tonal and narrative balance.
This version of The Sympathizer is still substantive and audacious, a slab of satire and deeply felt human tragedy that’s worthy of conversation and consideration,...

Paramount Pictures hosted a ‘Friends & Family’ screening for its new Johnny Knoxville-starrer Sweet Dreams at L.A.’s Laemmle Royal on April 1. Even with a handful of comedians in the building and a date that coincided with April Fool’s Day, the world premiere of filmmaker Lije Sarki’s recovery-centered softball dramedy was no joke.
The scene mirrored much larger Hollywood premieres as members of the starry cast and their friends (Anderson .Paak, Bobby Lee, Lil Dicky) mingled with movie stars (Josh Brolin, Shia Labeouf). Guests took advantage of a red carpet complete with a veteran Tinseltown photographer (Todd Williamson) while others waited in long lines simply to get into the Laemmle (an overflow theater was added to accommodate the number of RSVPs).

Johnny Knoxville always seems to display an aching vulnerability, and it’s not just because he’s voluntarily endured years of intense bodily suffering as a result of his Jackass movies. So he seems the perfect choice to play the central character in Lije Sarki’s raucous black comedy that plays like a Bad News Bears featuring recovering addicts rather than precocious children.
Knoxville plays Morris, whose sad state of affairs is made immediately apparent in the opening scene: He’s shown waking up nearly naked and bloody on a park bench, having clearly been on one hell of a bender the night before. Even worse, he had apparently left his eight-year-old daughter home alone, making him realize he’s a danger to others as well as himself.

On the latest episode of his podcast Wild Ride!, Steve-o said he turned down appearing on Bill Maher’s podcast because the Club Random host refused to not smoke weed during their chat.
Steve-o — whose real name is Stephen Glover — asked conservative commentator Patrick Bet-David, who appeared on Club Random recently, about his experience with Maher, particularly about how he felt about the TV personality smoking weed in the room.
While Bet-David didn’t appear to have an issue with it, Glover noted that he brought it up because Maher didn’t respect his wishes as a former addict to have a sober environment.
“For me, I’m a clean and sober guy. It’s very important that I maintain my sobriety,” said Glover. “I’m about to be sweet 16 [years sober], coming up on it. Really, there’s nothing I value more than my sobriety. There’s nothing more that I protect than my recovery.
