Paramount is heading to Sleepy Hollow with a brand new feature film take on the classic Headless Horseman tale, with Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) announced to direct the movie back in 2022. But is that project still happening, now two years later?
The Hollywood Reporter lets us know this afternoon that Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Lindsey Anderson Beer, and one of the projects on the upcoming slate is the aforementioned Sleepy Hollow movie that was originally announced two years ago.
THR details, “Additional projects on the development slate include… Sleepy Hollow with Anderson Beer attached to write, direct, and produce alongside Todd Garner of Broken Road.”
You can learn more about the slate over on The Hollywood Reporter. It also includes a supernatural thriller titled Here Comes the Dark from the writers of Don’t Worry Darling.

As the autumn days wear on, horror fans around the world mourn the passing of spooky season and turn their lonely eyes to November. What better film to watch while finishing off the Halloween candy than Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow?
Adapted from Washington Irving’s 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this icy film begins in an autumnal cornfield and ends on a snowy street just in time for a new century. Burton’s version of the story also features a surprising number of witches, a baffling appearance by Christopher Walken, and one of the most stunning villain reveal dresses in cinematic history.

Spooky season is in full swing, which means plenty of movie fans will flock to Tim Burton’s beloved seasonal classic “Sleepy Hollow.” But not the director of the new upcoming movie adaptation — filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer is intentionally steering clear of the Halloween classic.
Beer’s “Pet Sematary” prequel just landed on Paramount+ and next up, she’s set to re-team with Paramount to write, direct and produce a new retelling of the beloved American ghost story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
“Whenever I’m adapting something, if it’s been adapted before on film, I don’t rewatch the movies. I you just can’t,” Beer told TheWrap. “I didn’t while making ‘Pet Sematary,’ I just kept re-reading the books. And it’s the same thing for ‘Sleepy Hollow.’”

Back in 1820, author Washington Irving created a short story entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It brought to life the haunting character of The Headless Horseman. This legendary tale would become the stuff of nightmares and scare people of all ages. So what was the next best thing to do? That’s right…adapt it into a movie! And not just any movie… we’re talking about Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Record Scratch)…Sorry I meant Tim Burton’s 1999 Horror film Sleepy Hollow (watch it Here). Of all the adaptations to release, this one is the perfect version. So why and how did this get made? And how...

'Pet Sematary: Bloodlines' director Lindsey Anderson Beer is to helm the 'Sleepy Hollow' reboot. The filmmaker is making her directorial debut on the Paramount+ horror prequel - which is based on Stephen King's 1983 novel - and will follow up that film by turning her attention to the remake for the same studio.Lindsey is also acting as the writer on the project, which has been delayed by the five-month strike by the Writers Guild of America. In an interview with the new issue of SFX magazine, Lindsey spilled: "I'm directing a 'Sleepy Hollow' reboot for Paramount. I am directing, producing and one day will be writing it again."I turned in the first draft a week before the strike started. Walpurgisnacht, also known as Walpurgis Night or Hexennacht, is a pagan holiday celebrated on the night of April 30th. It is named after Saint Walpurga, an eighth-century nun who Christianized parts of Germany. However, the holiday has roots in pagan traditions that celebrate the coming of spring and the triumph of life over death. It is also associated with witchcraft and supernatural phenomena, making it a perfect occasion to indulge in some spine-chilling horror films.
So, grab some popcorn and get ready for a night of scares with these ten chilling recommendations for Walpurgisnacht.
1. Dracula (1931)
What better way to kick off Walpurgisnacht than with the most iconic vampire movie of all time? Dracula (1931) stars Bela Lugosi as the titular count who travels from Transylvania to England to spread his curse of the undead. Written and directed by Scott Cooper, Netflix’s The Pale Blue Eye gazes on the young poet Edgar Allan Poe, played by Harry Melling, who would go on to invent the detective mystery with his short story “Murders at the Rue Morgue.” Based on Louis Bayard’s 2006 novel, The Pale Blue Eye is set in 1830 at the West Point Military Academy where the body of Cadet Leroy Fry (Matt Heim) is found hanging from a tree with his heart cut out of his chest.
Poe entered West Point as a cadet on July 1, 1830. By October he had enough of the regiment and got himself purposely court-martialed, refusing to attend formations, classes, or church services. Poe was tried for gross neglect of duty and disobedience of orders on Feb. 8, 1831. Knowing he would be found guilty, Poe pled not guilty to ensure the final verdict would get him kicked out.

This article contains minor The Pale Blue Eye spoilers.
Based on a novel by Louis Bayard and not true events, director Scott Cooper’s period thriller The Pale Blue Eye imagines a young Edgar Allan Poe, as played by Harry Melling, in the short handful of months he attended West Point Academy as a cadet. By this time, Poe had already published two books of poetry and served in the U.S. Army before matriculating at the military school on the Hudson River. He had not yet invented the detective mystery genre with “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” published in Graham’s Magazine in 1841. Hence the film offers a theoretical scenario for its inspiration: The tortuous murder, and grisly desecration, of Cadet Leroy Fry (Matt Heim) is committed on the school’s periphery, and a killer is at large.
The Pale Blue Eye stars Christian Bale as retired constable Augustus Landor,...

Ghost stories have been around forever, and will haunt us long after we are ghosts. Before film, most apparitional tales came from novels or short stories. Yes, there were oral traditions of the spooky place down the block or the hitchhiker on a lost highway, but usually someone put it down in a book. Some of the greatest films about hauntings originate as full cinema creations, with a director’s dark vision on the screen, others come from true cases or urban legends. These ghost stories are novel ideas.
This is by no means a complete list. Almost every Edgar Allan Poe film adaptation has a spectral presence; Charles Dickens’ nighttime visitors in A Christmas Carol are only ghosts of presents we wrap for seasonal coverage; director Lew Allen’s 1944 horror feature The Uninvited isn’t here because I haven’t read Dorothy Macardle’s Uneasy Freehold (1941), which it was...

The break-in happened around 4 a.m., on a leafy street in the otherwise sleepy and sleeping village of Irvington, New York. Four men wearing ski masks and gloves, armed with knives, rope, brass knuckles, and a fake 9 mm, crept around the back of the large suburban home, their ghostly forms captured by its security-camera footage. As would later be alleged in court proceedings, the rope was intended to tie up the family. The knife was to torture them until the oldest son told them what they wanted to know. The...

Author Jamie Mollart laughs while admitting this, but the idea for Kings of a Dead World, his new dystopian novel about a world put to sleep to conserve resources, came to him in a dream. And why shouldn’t it have? “Sleep on it” is the common advice for a human being pondering a big choice or change, with the promise that a good night’s sleep will allow them better perspective to write a novel, make a life-shifting decision… maybe even save the world?
Over fifty years ago in Welcome to the Monkey House, Kurt Vonnegut vividly described a grossly overpopulated Earth like the tightly-packed drupelets of a raspberry. Mollart’s bleak near-future bears these familiar hallmarks, further complicating overpopulation with rising water levels, dwindling fossil fuels, and, most damningly, individual countries’ failure to halt the global climate crisis on their own terms. The solution,...

“It always is Christmas Eve, in a ghost story” – Jerome K. Jerome, 1891
In the English countryside, dinner had ended, and the company retired to the drawing room. They gathered around the fire as the parson, who sat in a high-backed oak chair, proceeded to tell of goblins and ghosts. The squire, not a superstitious man himself, listened intently as the parson spoke about the crusader who rose from his tomb for a nighttime ride. The old porter’s wife added to the tale with her own of the crusader’s march on Midsummer Eve, when fairies became visible.
Such was Christmas Night at Bracebridge Hall, England, in 1820.
The story set in the fictional manor was written by American author Washington Irving, and published in 1820 in the fifth installment of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This was less than three months before the world was introduced to the Headless...

Santa’s back, and Goldie’s got him, as the MGM marketing department of yore might have put it, and while Netflix’s “The Christmas Chronicles 2” hits pretty much every note you’d expect, it throws in enough surprises, and deep dives into Yuletide lore, to keep it from being mere tinsel.
In a year when most of us won’t be able to spend the holidays with our families, the film offers a reunion or two: Hollywood power spouses Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn co-star in a movie for the first time since the original “Overboard,” and Christmas royalty Chris Columbus returns to the director’s chair after producing the first “Chronicles” in 2018.
This time, Columbus co-writes with Matt Lieberman (who also wrote the original), and the two of them have clearly done their Christmas research, crafting a storyline that weaves in everything from Santa’s Turkish origins...

A part of Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis where George Floyd died will be renamed in his honor, city officials have decided.

It may still be over two months until Halloween, but that hasn’t stopped Disney+ from getting in the holiday spirit. A batch of 20 family-friendly horror films have dropped on the streaming service recently, providing you with an abundance of frights to get you gradually geared up for the best night of the year, with a few stand-out entries worth looking out for.
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is one of many anthology pics Disney released in the ‘40s, and is best remembered as a Boomer equivalent of Watership Down, The Dark Crystal or The NeverEnding Story in the “movies that traumatized children” category. Its first segment is based on classic kids book The Wind in the Willows, but the second, more relevant half adapts Washington Irving’s famous short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, with its rich but dark animation and foreboding tone and music terrifying many of its young viewers.

It’s the start of a new month and Netflix has added a ton of notable new titles to its library today. Among them are two great 90s movies that Johnny Depp fans will want to check out. Namely, 1997’s crime drama Donnie Brasco and 1999’s supernatural horror Sleepy Hollow. If you haven’t seen either or one of these before or at least in a while, now’s your chance to fix that. They’re very different films, sure, but feature a couple of top-draw performances from Depp.
First off, Donnie Brasco – based on real events – follows Depp’s undercover FBI agent as he infiltrates the mafia under the alias Donnie Brasco. He’s taken under the wing of aging hitman Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino). But, as he gets deeper into the criminal organization, Donnie has to deal with crossing the line between undercover agent and actual criminal as...

The great cycle of Netflix content continues, and throughout next month a number of horror movies will be added to the digital library, as if real life isn’t terrifying enough right now.
First up is Red Riding Hood, another retelling of possibly the world’s most famous fairy tale, this one seeing a young woman living in a village on the edge of a forest plagued by a werewolf becoming essential in unraveling the mystery of the creature’s identity as the townsfolk attempt to put an end to the threat.
Although far from the first adaptation of Washington Irving’s famous short story, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow is also on the way and is one of the best, a murder mystery that expands the brief tale into a snapshot of colonial life and superstition, with black magic, brutal death and supernatural mayhem.

Or rather New York forgot us and let us stay."—F. Scott FitzgeraldThe New York of Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976) is a sepulchral city, rife with pimps and politicians and mottled with the filth of moral decay. It now belongs to a bygone epoch, an era when Times Square, not yet a great exaltation of corporate gasconading, was where you went for a peep show and a dime bag. In addition to taking part in the Plan 9 From Outer Space live stage reading at Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival, Jeffrey Combs is also bringing a literary legend to life on stage with his one-man show, Nevermore: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe. Ahead of his latest live performance as Poe at Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival tonight at the Tarrytown Music Hall, Daily Dead caught up with Combs (who can also be seen in the upcoming horror anthology film Holiday Hell) to discuss playing Poe for more than a decade, the genius of Poe's written works, the tragic real-life story of the Master of the Macabre, and he also discussed reteaming with Greg Nicotero for Shudder's new Creepshow series

One of the most popular and influential Japanese directors of his generation, the multi-talented Shunji Iwai is commonly recognized for his distinctive and innovative visual style. Although describing himself as an “eizo sakka” (visual artist), characters and plot themes are often excellently developed in his films, all of which he has personally scripted. Iwai has also edited several of his films, and has even scored the music for more recent efforts. Often using women protagonists, Iwai has garnered fine performances from Japanese Pop singers in key roles, most notably Miho Nakayama in Love Letter (1995) and Chara in Picnic (1996), Swallowtail Butterfly (1996) and Cocco, in A Bride For Rip Van Winkle. A trend-setter, he has created a style that resonates with Japanese pop culture, striking a chord with contemporary Japanese youth, especially young women.
We speak with him about his career, his latest film, “A Bride for Rip Van Winkle”, Japanese society and other topics.

Tim Burton celebrates his 60th birthday on August 25. In his 30-plus year career, the director has carved out a niche for himself making quirky, eccentric films that are often box office bonanzas. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at all 18 of his films, ranked from worst to best, in the photo gallery above.
Burton began his career as an animator for Walt Disney Studios before making the short films “Vincent” (1982) and “Frankenweenie” (1984). He directed his first feature when he was just 26 years old: “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (1985). Burton followed that success with the macabre comedy “Beetlejuice” (1988) before entering the world of blockbusters with the dark, ominous superhero adventure “Batman” (1989).
From the beginning, Burton displayed a talent for crafting visually stunning worlds unlike any seen before. Four of his films, in fact — “Batman,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Alice in Wonderland” — have won Oscars for their art direction.

Tis the season to be...well informed. We all love Christmas, but how much do any of us actually know about why Christmas is the way it is? Here are 31 facts about Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and Rudolph that you (probably) didn’t know. Smarten up!
1. Christmas supposedly marks the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. But there is no mention of December 25 in the Bible and most historians actually believe he was born in the spring.
2. December 25 was probably chosen because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival Saturnalia, which celebrated the agricultural god Saturn with partying, gambling, and gift-giving.
3. Many of the popular Christmas traditions today found their roots in Saturnalia: Branches from evergreen trees were used during winter solstice as a reminder of the green plants that would grow in spring when the sun gods grew strong.

If you've enjoyed watching the adventures of Ichabod Crane, then you may be sad to hear that Fox has canceled Sleepy Hollow after four seasons.
Multiple sources, including Variety, have confirmed the news of Sleepy Hollow's cancelation, which suffered low ratings in its fourth season that aired from January–March of this year.
The show's fourth season was shorter than its previous installments (13 episodes compared to the usual 18) and featured a core cast transition following the departure of Nicole Beharie after the third season.
The series premiered in September of 2013, introducing viewers to a new take on Washington Irving's classic short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Tom Mison starred as Ichabod Crane, who was transported from 1781 to a modern-day Sleepy Hollow. Creepy carnage ensued as the Headless Horseman and other evil entities terrorized the community.

Halloween is a time when regular folk allow themselves to see the world as us horror lovers do – weird and wonderful, sinister mischief with tongue in cheek under (and over) tones. They watch that scary movie they’ve been meaning to get to for the past year, string up skeletons, and parade around at office parties in the latest ironic costumes (expect tons of Trumps and Weiners this year). But for the fearful faithful, this is our workaday; we watch the films daily, display our rooms with terror trinkets, and dress up as our favourite icons at constant conventions around the globe. So what separates the actual day of Halloween from our normal routine? TV viewing, of course.
