[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the S.W.A.T. Season 7 finale “Twenty Squad.”] The future looks bright for Twenty Squad. S.W.A.T. ended its seventh (and nearly final) season with a bang, with Hondo (Shemar Moore) putting himself at great risk to keep Los Angeles safe—and the city took notice. Meanwhile, Deacon (Jay Harrington), though retired, once again helped out, and by the end of the episode, he was back with S.W.A.T. Also sticking around on 20 Squad? Tan (David Lim), Powell (Anna Enger Ritch), and Alfaro (Niko Pepaj). And Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit) is letting Hondo pick whoever he wants to fill the sixth spot. Below, executive producer Andrew Dettmann breaks down the finale and teases what’s ahead. Shemar told me that nothing was changed about the finale, but if you ...

In fact, while on their way to a convention center, a van matching the description of the one they’re after drives right past Hondo (Shemar Moore) in the opposite direction. He quickly does a U-Turn to follow, with Deacon and Alfaro (Niko Pepaj) joining in. But they can’t let this van crash, so watch the full sneak peek above for a look at some careful maneuvering and to see how the chase ends. While for the most part, “everything was positive” about finding out S.W.A.T. had been uncanceled for a second time, there was one heartbreaking part, according to executive producer Andrew Dettmann. During Season 7, Hondo (Shemar Moore) has had to say goodbye to three members of 20 Squad. Street (Alex Russell) transferred to Long Beach, Luca (Kenny Johnson) was forced to retire after an injury when he interrupted a robbery off-duty, and Deacon (Jay Harrington) has chosen to retire. While Harrington is still around as Deacon adjusts to his next chapter, such is not the case for Russell or Johnson, who both had farewell episodes. “I would love to see them back,” Dettmann tells TV Insider. “The one heartbreaking thing was when we were told this is the end, Season 7, giving Street and Alex that goodbye, making part of Long Beach Pd, giving Luca that heartbreaking goodbye that Kenny played so well, those...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for S.W.A.T. Season 7 Episode 12 “Allegiance.”] Is it just us, or does it feel like S.W.A.T. is taking us one step closer with each episode to Deacon (Jay Harrington) returning to 20-Squad? And we’re counting those before he officially retired, too! Deacon pitches in to help the team in the season’s penultimate episode (which Harrington also directed), and it’s clear that he’s struggling to not be with his team. He admits he still finds himself waking up in the middle of the night and grabbing his phone, convinced he missed a call. He’s even taken to turning his phone off at night, as he does near the end of this episode after admitting to his wife Annie (Bre Blair), “I think it might have been too soon for me to go back.” The episode also sees Hondo (Shemar Moore) facing backlash...

Shemar Moore was celebrating the renewal of S.W.A.T in a big way last night at the CBS Fall Schedule Celebration in Hollywood.
Moore has portrayed series lead Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson across the show’s 7 seasons and serves as a producer. S.W.A.T is a procedural drama that follows Hondo, a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. Following an impassioned campaign led by Moore and the drama’s devoted fans, CBS uncanceled the show once more announcing last month they’d ordered an eighth season.

After months of promoting the final season of S.W.A.T., CBS reversed course Thursday afternoon with the following announcement:
S.W.A.T. has been renewed for Season 8!
The news comes midway through what was previously teased as the seventh and final season.
As you’ll recall, S.W.A.T. was canceled a year ago, before the network walked it back a few days later with a renewal.
The latest twist comes as the hit Shemar Moore drama has been (carefully) wrapping up the storylines of some of the drama’s most beloved characters.
Kenny Johnson’s Luca was written out earlier this month. The character retired after revealing he wasn’t too keen on the idea of desk duty after an injury rendered him unfit to go out in the field with his team.
S.W.A.T. Season 7 is currently delivering huge ratings
S.W.A.T. Season 7 is currently averaging 8.8 million total viewers in live + 35-day multiplatform viewing,...

Miracles do happen.
We’ve just witnessed one with the renewal of S.W.A.T, which was previously canceled by CBS.
Yes, that’s right, CBS announced today that it has renewed the hit drama series S.W.A.T. for the 2024-2025 season. The series will return for its eighth year on the Network.
Who had this on their bingo cards?
We’ve been riding for so long on the cancellation of popular shows on other networks — even after they’re renewed — that this news hits us like a shower of warm rose petals.
It’s concerning that during S.W.A.T. Season 7, many beloved characters have already said their goodbyes, so either they’ll be looking to walk that back or introduce us to a new team.
That’s a risky move for a series that had already been on the chopping block (and lost its head) once. Well, twice if you consider the original...

S.W.A.T. is not ending after all. Beating the odds a second time, the action drama has been renewed for the 2024-25 season, with Shemar Moore set to continue as star and executive producer. I hear Season 8 will consist of 22 episodes.
The news comes a year after S.W.A.T. was canceled before the decision was dramatically reversed a couple of days later with a renewal for a seventh and final season. This time, the network is not boxing itself in and is leaving the door open to more by not branding 8 as the series’ final season.
The surprise renewal, which sources said came down pretty quickly over the last couple of days, also comes as S.W.A.T is wrapping production on its seventh season. Moore hinted at the drama not necessarily ending by posting set photos on his Ig story yesterday with the caption “Season 7 finale will be [fire emoji],” not referring to the episode as series finale.

Turns out reports of “S.W.A.T’s” cancellation have been greatly exaggerated. CBS has renewed the cop drama for Season 8 despite announcing its seventh season would be its last nearly a year ago.
The latest drama marks the second time “S.W.A.T” has technically escaped cancellation, with CBS initially axing the show before announcing it would return for one last run. The original decision to cancel “S.W.A.T” came down to licensing fees. After Sony and CBS were unable to come to terms in 2023, the show was canceled, but they eventually worked out the deal for a final season with a reduced episode count.

S.W.A.T. could be a perfect example of how a network can mishandle a reliable performer.
Based on its ratings, S.W.A.T. should have been a sure shot for CBS to renew.
In Live + 7 results, S.W.A.T. Season 6 averaged 6.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo.
This made the series the No.3 show in the demo on the network and No. 10 among total viewers.
Despite that, the ax fell on S.W.A.T. last May, with storylines left hanging, the worst possible fate for a veteran series.
Star Shemar Moore blasted the decision because he and the other cast members saw those rating numbers and felt confident about a renewal.
The cancellation stood for two days. Then CBS caved in the face of a deluge of outrage from the series' fans, and S.W.A.T. was renewed for a 13-episode final, seventh season, giving it a chance for closure.
