For the first time ever, a film streaming on Netflix (free for subscribers) and available on VOD ($5.99 for 48 hours) is #1 on both charts.
Toho’s late-2023 sleeper success and eventual Oscar Visual Effects winner, “Godzilla Minus One” achieved that feat with a totally unexpected and previously unannounced release on Saturday.
The film, released in early December to an unexpected U.S./Canada gross of $56 million, normally would have hit PVOD for rental for $19.99 by late January, been reduced to $5.99 after a few weeks, then found a streaming home. But because of vaguely defined agreements with Legendary Entertainment, Toho’s partner in making Warner Bros.’ costlier Godzilla films, the March opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” led to the early-February termination of theatrical dates for “Minus One.” That came despite the Toho film still doing business (and ahead of the Oscars). Then, Warner’s “Godzilla x Kong” could play without “Minus One” as competition.

“Thank you for your service.” The words have become a cliché, but Hollywood has tried long and hard to make them matter. The industry has produced countless films about warfare and those who died for their country (whom we remember this week). But it has had a mixed record on presenting characters suffering the after-effects of putting their lives on the line. They may have survived, but lost comrades and innocence. It is their moment, too.
World War II brought the most cinematic treatment, and one of the directors who himself served — William Wyler — later had the guts to depict the challenges soldiers faced when the fighting stopped. Vietnam was likely the most troublesome to depict, it being the one we lost. Right-winger John Wayne was up first, with “The Green Berets,” gung-ho in flavor. It wasn’t until the late ‘70s that a pair of exceptional movies focused less...

Morgan Spurlock who was known for his quirky documentaries, died this Thursday from complications of cancer. In 2004, he created a gem with Super Size Me, in this documentary, Spurlock conducted an experiment to uncover the truth about the effects of junk food, particularly McDonald’s, on the human body. The film, released in 2004, was a great success and resonated with people, leading to a drop in McDonald’s sales.

What was impressive is that its impact was visible in real-time, shedding light on how this film connected with the audiences. However, despite the documentary’s success, this social experiment completely ruined Spurlock’s body and mind.

“You have to make certain choices,” said the pic’s co-director and co-scribe Matthieu Delaporte who sprung to the project with collaborator Alexandre de La Patelliere after their work on the two-part feature version of Dumas’ The Three Musketeers.

Oscar nominees Kodi Smit-McPhee and Djimon Hounsou are set to star in claustrophobic thriller “The Zealot.”
The two-hander, being introduced to buyers in Cannes by WestEnd Films, comes from director Vadim Perelman working from a screenplay by Bennett Fisher, and touches on themes involving privilege, paranoia, and the assumptions we make about one another.
“The Zealot” follows Hassan, a Somali-American airport shuttle driver in Minneapolis, who is struggling to make ends meet. When Lloyd, a stranded twentysomething at the airport, offers to pay Hassan to take him overland to Chicago, it seems worth the risk. But as the realization grows that his passenger is not what he seems, Hassan finds he is trapped in a terrifying ride which he can’t escape from, knowing that to save himself might put countless others in danger.

“More stars than there are in heaven” was once the slogan for Hollywood’s largest studio. Larger-than-life celebrities like Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Jean Harlow and Gene Kelly were common fixtures at MGM. Today, MGM is an IP outpost purchased by Amazon for $8.5 billion in 2022, but in its day, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had the biggest lot in Hollywood and produced some of the most extravagant films. Located in Culver City, MGM’s famously sprawling lot began as it grew from the 40 acres owned by Samuel Goldwyn. The legendary MGM property was 3 miles long and housed more than 45 buildings and 14 stages, in addition to numerous outdoor sets that would be built over the years.
MGM was home to countless classic films, and in 1939 alone, the studio backed the timeless fantasy The Wizard of Oz and distributed the Oscar-winning Gone With the Wind, the Ernst Lubitsch/Greta Garbo comedy Ninotchka,...

IFC Films’ Late Night With The Devil topped the specialty market in its second week, as a Tollywood and a Bollywood film both made the top ten in a rare occurrence. Strong horror and Indian fare have helped buoy the box office since Covid. They continue to fill in the top ten, including this week, which boasts a monstrous hit in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — but is a neighborhood with fewer overall wide release due to Hollywood strikes.
Scary first: Late Night With The Devil by Australian duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes stars David Dastmalchian, perfection as a late 1970s talk show host whose quest for ratings on a Halloween night broadcast goes nowhere good, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. It grossed $2.2 million on 1,442 screens in week two, for a cume of $6.2 million. The film is in the top ten again, at no. 7.

In 1965, Martin Scorsese was 22 and surrounded by legends when he won the Jesse L. Laskey Intercollegiate Award at the Milestone Awards dinner hosted by the then-called Screen Producers Guild on March 8, 1965. Now, almost 60 years later, the filmmaker received the David O. Selznick Achievement Award at the 2024 PGA Awards in what he called a “full-circle” moment.
Guillermo del Toro introduced the Killers of the Flower Moon director and producer at Sunday’s award show, calling him an “indispensable titan.” When Scorsese, now 81, took the stage, he started to tell the story of the 1965 awards show and how he kissed German actress Elke Sommer on stage.
“On the stage, Alfred Hitchcock, James Stewart, Jack Benny, Samuel Goldwyn, Jack Warner and Norman Lear, Lew Wasserman, Julie Stein, Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, Janel Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Elke Sommer and David O. Selznick,” said Scorsese. “They were the people on the dais at...

Martin Scorsese accepted the Producers Guild’s David O. Painting the scene, the Killers of the Flower Moon filmmaker said: “On the stage, Alfred Hitchcock, James Stewart, Jack Benny, Samuel Goldwyn, Jack Warner and Norman Lear, Lew Wasserman, Julie SteinCary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, Janel Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Elke Sommer and David O. As a teenager, Barbra Streisand dreamt of being an actress while sitting on her bed in Brooklyn with a pint of coffee ice cream and a movie magazine. During those days, after school she would make a break for New York’s Astor Theatre, which showed black-and-white international movies. Another time, she ducked into a showing of Guys and Dolls at the Loew’s Kings Theatre in her neighborhood.
“Everything was so beautiful up on that screen,” Streisand said in opening her acceptance speech upon receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award during Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. “That make-believe world was much more pleasant than anything I was experiencing. I didn’t like reality. I wanted to be in the movies, even though I knew I didn’t look like the other women on the screen. My mother said, ‘you better learn to type,’ but I didn’t listen.

In a meditative and heartfelt speech, Barbra Streisand accepted the SAG Life Achievement Award on Saturday by paying tribute to the industry’s roots and extolling her abiding passion for the craft.
“For a couple of hours people could sit in a theater and escape their own troubles – what an idea! Moving pictures on a screen,” she said in remarks that followed a nearly 1-minute standing ovation as she took the stage.
“I can’t help but think back to the people who built this industry. Ironically, they were also escaping their own troubles,” she continued, in a contemplative but forceful tone. Samuel Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer and the four Warner Brothers “were all fleeing the prejudice they faced in Easter Europe, simply because of their religion. And they were dreamers, too, like all of us here tonight.

"A saint's gotta be a sinner first, don't he?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed a new official trailer for the hitman action thriller called In the Land of Saints and Sinners, made by producer / director Robert Lorenz. This originally premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year in the Orizzonti Extra section (watch the first trailer). In the land of saints and sinners, some sins can't be buried. Liam Neeson stars as Finbar, eager to leave his dark past behind. Set in Ireland in the 1970s, ready to leave his dark past behind, Finbar Murphy leads a quiet life in the remote coastal town of Glencolmcille, far from the political violence that grips the rest of the country. But when a menacing crew of terrorists arrive, led by a ruthless woman named Doirean, Finbar is drawn into an increasingly vicious game of cat and mouse, forcing him to choose between...

With 13 nominations, Christopher Nolan’s movie looks to dominate awards season, though there’s still room for Emma Stone and Kendearing Ryan Gosling
News: Oppenheimer beats BarbieFull list of nominations
As Samuel Goldwyn apocryphally remarked in 1945: “This A-bomb – it’s dynamite!!” With 13 Bafta nominations, Christopher Nolan’s mighty historical bio-epic Oppenheimer continues its triumphal march through awards season. It stars Cillian Murphy as the wartime inventor of nuclear weaponry J Robert Oppenheimer, galvanised by America’s race to get the bomb before the Nazis, transfixed by the dark ecstasy of the successful Trinity test in the New Mexico desert, then agonised with his postwar burden of guilt and horror. The Bafta voters have responded passionately to the scale, ambition and seriousness of this work from this remarkable British director; its wartime setting also reinforces its prestige-eligibility (like last year’s Bafta nomination list which overwhelmingly favoured All Quiet on the Western Front).

Updated: We’ve all heard of the first screenings for Oscar contending movies during Thanksgiving weekend, i.e. American Hustle and Joy in years past, however, to literally hold a glittery world premiere post-Turkey day is a rare feat. But that’s exactly what 32x Grammy winner Beyoncé did tonight with her AMC-distributed concert documentary movie Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé which made its grand debut at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
While AMC had The Grove shut down for the world premiere of their first distributed concert movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (which is headed to $250M WW) back in mid-October, that wasn’t an option given the busy holiday season; that Rick Caruso high-end outdoor shopping mall already occupied by Santa Claus and a Christmas tree. There have been many attempts to adapt Alexandre Dumas’ beloved swash-buckling story to the big screen. From Disney’s The Three Musketeers to Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers to the D’Artagnan solo story, The Musketeer, Alexandre Dumas’ tale has been told again and again. However, Samuel-Goldwyn Films and Pathé are attempting to tell the story with a faithful adaptation that will take two movies to convey. The new trailer for the French historical epic, The Three Musketeers: Part I – D’Artagnan, has now been unveiled.
The official synopsis from Samuel-Goldwyn Films and Pathé reads,
“In the first entry, D’Artagnan, a spirited young Gascon, is left for dead after trying to save a young woman from being kidnapped. When he arrives in Paris, he tries to find his attackers. He is unaware that his quest will lead him to the heart of a real war where the future of France is at stake.

Szmuel Gelbfisz. Lazar Meir. Hirsz Mojżesz Wonsal. Or as you know their instantly recognizable Americanized surnames as ones of the ment who built Hollywood: Samuel Goldwyn. Louis B. Mayer. Harry Warner. Hollywood was created by Jews who strove to fit into a non-Jewish-shaped box. Jews who wanted to un-Jew. Frankly, who could blame them? The United States was not overly friendly to Jews and un-Jewing was what you needed to do to get by. The trouble is that Hollywood is still stuck in their shadows and it’s a dangerous pattern to keep repeating.
The history of the Hollywood studios easily explains how we started down this road. The fantasy of the American Dream was upheld by Jews who held onto America for survival. The idealized world, the mythos that became “Hollywood,” was literally invented by people whose upbringing was defined by America — and what the “American Dream” had to...

Months into the combined writers and actors strikes, at a time of spiking food insecurity in Hollywood, hundreds of volunteer crewmembers distributed food, as well as household and personal care items, to peers at the Motion Picture & Television Fund campus in Woodland Hills on Thursday.
The drive-through food distribution event served about 1,000 households of Hollywood workers who have been financially impacted by the strike, according to an estimate provided by MPTF on Thursday. Organized by crew unions IATSE and the Teamsters Local 399 as well as MPTF, Labor Community Services, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Matthew 25 Ministries, it was the crew unions’ second such food drive in two months: In July, not long after SAG-AFTRA joined the Writers Guild of America on strike, IATSE and Local 399 hosted a similar food drive at the former union’s West Coast headquarters in Burbank, distributing 1,740 food boxes and feeding an estimated 8,700 people.

Based on the true-life experiences of Dave Fishwick; Bank of Dave tells the story of how a working class Burnley man and self-made millionaire fought to set up a small community bank. After working as a successful van salesman in the town, he gets involved lending to other locals which gives him the idea: Why not set up a tiny local bank that uses local money to fund local enterprise? He will call it: The Bank of Dave. The film stars Rory Kinnear (from Men and the Bond movies) as Dave, Joel Fry, Jo Hartley, Phoebe Dynevor,...

Our latest roundup of new books related to the world of cinema is full of indelible imagery––the pale face of Lost Highway’s Mystery Man, John Ford’s craggy visage, and, of course, the Neverland sets from Hook.
Lost Highway: The Fist of Love by Scott Ryan (Tucker DS Press)
Last year, Scott Ryan covered David Lynch’s Twin Peaks prequel in Fire Walk With Me: Your Laura Disappeared. (We featured it here.) In 2023, Ryan studies what he calls “the lowest-grossing, most forgotten film of [Lynch’s] career.” Ryan’s Lost Highway: The Fist of Love is every bit as enthralling and insightful as Your Laura Disappeared. The author zeroes in on the elements of Lost Highway that turned off most (but not all) audiences in 1997 but are titillating new (and revisiting) viewers today. Ryan should know; he was one of those who looked away in the nineties: “The first time I saw it,...

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” a new thriller starring Oscar nominees Liam Neeson and Kerry Condon. The studio is planning to release the film in theaters this fall.
“In the Land of Saints and Sinners” unfolds in a remote Irish village, where a damaged Finbar (Neeson) is forced to fight for redemption after a lifetime of sins. The question is what price is he willing to pay, as he finds himself drawn into a lethal game of cat and mouse with a trio of vengeful terrorists.
Neeson has starred in dozens of films, including “Schindler’s List,” “Taken” and “Batman Begins.” Condon was nominated for nearly every award possible for her supporting performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The starry ensemble of “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” also includes Colm Meaney (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”), Oscar-nominee Ciaran Hinds...

On Tuesday evening, Colin King, a stylist and creative director known for styling interiors for brands and publications including Roman and Williams Guild, Crate & Barrel, Architectural Digest and Elle Decor, celebrated the launch of his first book, Arranging Things (Rizzoli). The event, held at The Future Perfect’s Goldwyn House (the Hollywood Hills mansion named after legendary film producer and former owner of the home, Samuel Goldwyn), welcomed a range of creative guests including Troye Sivan, Jessie Andrews, Jake Arnold, Chriselle Lim and more.
The book’s title is a phrase found in King’s Instagram bio, a literal distillation of what he does as a stylist working in interiors. “My first mentor Tom Delavan, the design/interiors director at T Magazine, humbly said [to me], ‘You’re just a mover with an eye.’ That’s really all it is. It’s just moving things, and finding and forging those relationships...

Since its 1995 release, writer-director Gregg Araki’s gonzo Nc-17 crime movie “The Doom Generation” — about a trio of teens on a bloody road trip — has achieved cult classic status and paved a way for provocative and confrontational YA content like “Euphoria.” But after its Sundance Film Festival debut, almost no one saw the film Araki made.
“It’s shocking to me that the movie has survived all this time as a cult film with a devoted audience,” Araki told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “The [VHS and DVD] version that exists was never properly letterboxed, there’s a lot of stuff I didn’t like in terms of the color and sound, and the original master is not up to technical standards for streaming or Blu-ray.”
That’s all about to change with the release of a newly restored and remastered “Doom Generation” supervised by Araki that is set to begin rolling out...

Sometimes it can be fun to watch a skillful band cover songs. Tony Tost’s Americana is precisely that: an ode to the drive-in B-movie which in turn influenced filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, who in turn influenced a generation of filmmakers making quirky violent ensemble films with scrambled chronologies. What’s new is old again and Americana, influenced by films from the 1970s, feels more like a film from the 1990s with notes of Allison Anders’ Gas Food Lodging, David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, and the Kiefer Sutherland-directed neo-noir Truth or Consequences, N.M. The result, thanks in part to a compelling cast, elevates this material past the cinematic equivalent of the local dad band playing Springsteen covers at the corner bar on a Saturday night.
