Two moments of individual inspiration gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory against Hungarian side Ferencváros in the first game ever played at the Groupama Arena. With only two days having passed since the Blues’ last pre-season outing, a charity tournament against Besiktas and Fenerbahçe in Istanbul, Jose Mourinho elected to give starting minutes to youngsters Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen in defence and recent World Cup returnees Ramires, Willian and Andre Schurrle in midfield.
The lack of fitness and experience in the side weighed heavily on Chelsea in the first half. Their ponderous football struggled to break down a Ferencváros side pressing aggressively and playing out from the back. An early cross from Daniel Nagy found Attila Busai at the far post, but the striker sliced his shot over the crossbar before being ruled offside.

Diego Lugano’s second half header ensured Everton slipped to sixth in the Premier League as Pepe Mel picked up a point in his first game in charge of West Bromwich Albion. The visitors had led at The Hawthorns through a fourth goal of the season for Kevin Mirallas.
Albion started brightly with the controversial Nicolas Anelka feeding strike partner Matej Vydra as the young Czech worked Toffees keeper Tim Howard on eight minutes. Mel’s new managerial magic swiftly subsided, however.
Bryan Oviedo, in the Everton XI in place of the injured Steven Pienaar, fired wide twice in the space of a minute. First he volleyed the second ball from a free kick across goal when Liam Ridgewell’s clearance fell to him.
Oviedo then snatched at a second effort and Mirallas worked Ben Foster in the home goal after coming inside.

Neutrals were treated to an absorbing draw between two of the Premier League’s bottom six at Upton Park. West Bromwich Albion came away from East London with a point thanks to bright prospect Saido Berahino.
A topsy-turvy game at West Ham saw Sam Allardyce’s side lead 1-0 through Joe Cole only to go in behind at half time thanks to a Nicolas Anelka brace. Three goals in four manic second half minutes first saw the Hammers reclaim the lead through sub Modibo Maiga and Kevin Nolan. Baggies striker Berahino then ensured honours finished even.
Major talking points from this great game of football also included the Hammers playing 80 minutes without a recognized centre back. James Tomkins limped off with a groin injury. West Brom’s second goal came from a controversially-awarded corner and Berahino rattled the goal-frame late on with a stunning free kick.

West Ham United host West Bromwich Albion protecting a record of a decade unbeaten in home meetings. Brian Deane scored three times – twice at the right end and then in his own net – in November 2003 as the Baggies edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3.
The Hammers last entertained Albion in March and ran out 3-1 winners, but they will still be without Andy Carroll – the difference between the sides that day. Sam Allardyce has further intensified the pressure on himself by describing Saturday’s lunchtime encounter with West Brom as “a must win” as West Ham have slipped into the Premier League’s bottom three.
Heavyweights Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have all given the Hammers hidings in recent outings with only an extended run in the Capital One Cup affordng fans crumbs of Christmas comfort.

While the absence of the in-form Fernando Torres would be a problem for the Blues, Samuel Eto’o has performed well when deputising. Manager Jose Mourinho looks to be finally getting the best out of the striker and as a result it lifts the burden off the Chelsea midfield to be getting all the goals.
West Brom know all about the threat of Chelsea and how they’ll play, as manager Steve Clarke has long been a friend and former work colleague of Mourinho. He will name his side to nullify to threat of the Blues on the break, and will hope he can spring a counter at Stamford Bridge.

Both teams will be without several key men for this weekend’s three o’clock kick off. Starting with the home team, Brendan Rodgers will still be without chief creative talent Philippe Coutinho but believes the Brazilian should be back for next weekend’s clash with table toppers Arsenal. Didn’t Steve Clarke read the script? His West Brom side were supposed to put up a brave fight and give a good account of themselves before falling to a couple of goals from a solid, progressive Liverpool. I know football can be unpredictable but, really, I wasn’t expecting that. To not only not win, but to lose, and in a way that screeched a terrifying reminder of last season right in our humbled little ears. Ouch! So yes, that was a painful defeat. Shoot me right in the face, that was tough to watch. But it’s not as black and white as it seems. Is it ever?
For half the game we weren’t bad. Not spectacular, not great, not really even good, but we weren’t bad. We were controlling events, crafted a couple of opportunities (including a header which Suarez should be kicking himself for missing) and looked steady enough.

Team news ahead of a vital clash for Aston Villa as they travel to the Hawthorns to face West Brom. Villa have suffered a horrible run of results under boss Alex McLeish, winning only 1 in their last 13 which has left them only three points ahead of the drop zone.
West Brom’s Marc-Antoine Fortune is fit to return and could lead the front line. The Baggies striker missed the terrific 1-0 away victory at Anfield last weekend with a hamstring injury. That game saw Paul Scharner cracking a wrist bone but he too looks to have recovered to play.
James Morrison (knee), Zoltan Gera (knee) and right-back Steven Reid (foot) remain unavailable on the injured list.
Aston Villa’s Richard Dunne may return to the defence having recovered from his broken collarbone injury that has kept him out for the past two and a half months.

Team news ahead of Liverpool vs West Brom in the Premier League this afternoon. Kick-off time at Anfield is at 4pm.
Goalkeeper Jose Reina returns for Liverpool and will be in-between the sticks for today’s game after serving his three-match suspension for his red card against Newcastle on April 1st. Doni also returns after his suspension but Brad Jones will be hoping to pip in to a place on the bench after playing in Liverpool’s Fa Cup semi-final win over Everton last week.
Left-back Jose Enrique may be recalled having surprisingly been left out of the game at Wembley. Striker Andy Carroll will be hoping to keep his place in the side after scoring winning goals in his last two matches.

Controversial striker Mario Balotelli is suspended after picking up a red card against Arsenal and given manager Roberto Mancini’s recent comments may have played his last game for the club. Balotelli’s absence could open the way for another controversial striker to push for a start in the line-up is Carlos Tevez after four successive appearances off the bench.
Influential midfielder Yaya Toure is expected to sit out with a knee injury after he limped off on Sunday at the Emirates. A slightly lesser doubt is winger David Silva who is struggling with a knee injury.
For West Brom, Chris Brunt and Liam Ridgewell are both out with knee injuries. Paul Scharner and Nicky Shorey could replace them.

For the home team, 2011/12 has been a season of fluctuation, with some excellent performances, including the December win at St James Park sporadically dotted between less impressive runs of form , which have seen Roy Hodgson’s men take up 14th position in the league. But the Baggies’ last five games have seen just one defeat, and they can realistically hope for a repeat of last year’s top half finish if they can continue that rich run of form into the final games of the season. They certainly play some good football, even when they are beaten, and it is no coincidence that Hodgson’s name is once more being linked with the England manager’s position.

Team news ahead of West Brom’s game against Sunderland this afternoon, the Baggies looking for their first home win since November against the in-form Black Cats. Though West Brom have been riding on a big high in the past fortnight after their emphatic win over near-by rivals Wolves last time out.
Keith Andrews could make his full debut for the Baggies today. He joined West Brom on a deadline day free transfer from Blackburn Rovers last month and impressed as a scoring sub in the 5-1 win over former club Wolves in the Black Country derby last week.
Andrews will likely play instead of Paul Scharner, who is missing with a rib injury. Baggies captain Chris Brunk is battling back to fitness after suffering an ankle injury but Zoltan Gera is still a long-term absentee with a knee injury.

In a fixture that could put some real clearing distance between both teams and the relegation zone, Swansea City make the trip to the midlands to face West Brom at the Hawthorns.
If you look at the home and away form of these two teams it makes for what seems to be an even encounter. West Brom hold the third worst home form in the league whilst Swansea hold the title of worst form on the road.
The last time these two teams met it signalled not only Swansea’s first Premier League victory but also their first Premier League goals after they broke a 4 game goal drought at the start of the season. Brendan Rodgers’ boys secured the win with a 3-0 scoreline so Roy Hodgson will no doubt be looking for some revenge in the reverse fixture.

West Bromwich Albion welcome Norwich City to the Hawthorns this afternoon on the back of a 4-2 win over Cardiff in the Fa Cup, but with just one point from their last three Premier League outings (though it was against Manchester City). Norwich too despatched Championship opposition in the cup – recording a comfortable 4-1 win over Burnley at Carrow Road. Many are expecting them to start slipping any time now – ‘doing a Blackpool’ seems to be the official expression for any team that dares to still be punching above their weight at Christmas nowadays, and we all know what happened there. Canaries fans will know though that their side have yet to experience any real torrid times under maestro Paul Lambert.
So how will the game go this afternoon? Well, the Baggies got the better of the Canaries last time out – seeing out a 1-0 win courtesy of a Peter Odemwingie goal.

Queens Park Rangers should feel that they’ve made a pleasing start to the season as they sit just underneath the top 10. Although they suffered a 4-0 battering on the first day of the season against a Bolton side who are struggling at the moment under Owen Coyle, they’ve bounced back and have recorded valuable victories over the likes of Chelsea, Wolves and held off in-from Newcastle on home soil a few months ago. But one thing Neil Warnock’s men have been missing lately is goals.
Heidar Helguson has been the only real threat infront of goal for them recently with five goals this season, but with DJ Campbell out injured and Jay Bothroyd not making the fastest of starts to his Rangers career, they do look rather ordinary in the final third. But I’m sure a few January signings will cover that. The London side lost...

West Bromwich Albion head into this game coming off the backs of a 2-1 victory over strugglers Bolton Wanderers. The win put them up to tenth spot in the league and Hodgson will be looking to improve on that result from last weekend and try and secure back-to-back wins by beating a Spurs side that are in great form. Irish striker Shane Long is out for Albion after suffering another injury in training, a big blow for the Baggies as Long is the side’s top scorer. Other star forward Peter Odemwingie is also set to miss the match with a knee injury, although Austrian midfielder Paul Scharner is available after recovering from a minor knee injury.

Blackburn Rovers
With Venky’s millions behind them, many thought Rovers would be transformed from a mediocre lower-mid table club to European contenders. However with the rather odd appointment of Steve Kean as manager (a man who had never managed a professional football team) things haven’t really changed too much at Ewood Park. After a very poor start to the 2011/12 season, Blackburn find themselves in 18th place. On paper there is enough quality in Kean’s squad to survive, but players such as Rubén Rochina and Junior Hoilett may...

Hungarian footballer and film buff Zoltán Gera picks his favourite films from his homeland ahead of the upcoming Hungarian film festival in London
Film can be very important for a nation – for finding an identity, and keeping it, and also for telling other people about our country. Hungarian cinema is like Hungary itself: it's gone through a lot, sometimes it's found itself in difficulties, but it has kept its rich variety and can still produce beautiful things.
Many say the golden age of Hungarian cinema was in the 1950s and 60s, when the dictatorship was at its most brutal. It is amazing how Hungarian directors of that time could find the means and ways to stand up against the regime through the human stories in their films. I particularly love Hungarian historical movies, as, during socialism, film-makers turned to the past. I especially like the 1968 film Stars of Eger – based...
