Steven Spielberg is one of the most notable and iconic directors that the world has ever seen. From creating iconic movies such as Jurassic Park to Schindler’s List, Spielberg’s mind has always been one of a creative person wanting to push the limits above the normal.

Steven Spielberg’s 1975 cult-classic film Jaws remains one of the greatest films of all time and is considered the definitive shark film by many, but fans would be shocked to know that he was not originally the director attached to the project. Indeed, it would be difficult to imagine another filmmaker stepping into the boat.
Jaws (1975)
How the famed filmmaker got the gig was quite an interesting one. Although he was not the first choice, he made the film his own even though it cost him so much mental and emotional stress.
Steven Spielberg Was Not The First Choice To Direct Jaws
In an interview for Laurent Bouzereau’s book Spielberg: The First Ten Years via Vanity Fair, director Steven Spielberg revealed how he snagged the project that was already in the hands of another creative.
“That was that, until I got a call from Dick asking me to come meet with him and David.

Steven Spielberg's breakthrough movie, famously, did not come easy. In 1974, the up-and-coming filmmaker — then in his twenties — took on the difficult task of adapting a brand new, super-successful novel into what would become the first summer blockbuster, overseeing complex action sequences, massive practical effects set-ups, and shoots in the open ocean. It was a challenge that the filmmaker was hesitant to take on in the first place, and Spielberg eventually ended up over budget and over schedule.
As a product of movie-making titan Universal Pictures, it would've been easy for executives to simply replace Spielberg with another filmmaker. According to the director himself, though, one exec vouched for him, and it was a decision that impacted the rest of his career. Entertainment Weekly once asked Spielberg why he was never fired from "Jaws," and he replied: "Sid Sheinberg always blocked it." As the then-president of Universal, Sheinberg had final...

It's hard to picture anybody but the iconic Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's "Halloween," but she wasn't a shoe-in for the role by any means. Carpenter thought she had the right stuff on her first audition, but you must remember that at the time she was just another unproven actress in a town overflowing with unproven actresses, albeit not all of them had superstar parents like Jamie Lee.
Laurie Strode put Jamie Lee Curtis on the map, no question about it, but there was some competition for the role, and the fun part is we have to play a little guessing game to figure out who that competition was.
On the "Halloween" commentary with Carpenter and Curtis, they bring up the actress who was Jamie Lee's main competition ... but they can't remember her name!

"Jaws" is an immortal classic, but decades on from its 1975 release, several of the movie's principal players have left us. Peter Benchley, the source novel's author and the film's co-writer turned shark conservationist, passed in 2006. Robert Shaw, who played the shark-hating fisherman Quint, died in 1978, a mere three years after the premiere of "Jaws." Shaw still left his mark on film history thanks to his masterful monologue about Quint's experience during the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis.
Of course, the biggest winner of "Jaws" was director Steven Spielberg, who entered the production of "Jaws" as a scrappy young upstart and turned it into his first rung while climbing the Hollywood lader. Spielberg is the most influential American filmmaker of his generation and the ones that have followed. He's never lost his magic touch either, so we can only hope and pray he stays with us even longer.

Unlike "Halloween," "The Exorcist," "Alien," or "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," "Jaws" is the rare iconic '70s horror franchise that has yet to see any sort of revival in the 21st century ... mostly because Steven Spielberg himself has gone all Quint with a baseball bat on Universal's attempts to reboot it. But more than that, Spielberg's original 1975 hit (itself based on Peter Benchley's pulpy 1974 best-selling novel) never really lent itself to being a franchise in the first place. There aren't any supernatural entities or unexplained other-worldly encounters in Spielberg's classic adventure, nor does it end with Bruce the shark flailing his fins and dancing a merry jig. It's not what one would call the most scientifically-accurate work of Sharksploitation to ever hit the big screen, but it is a grounded story with a clear-cut beginning and ending.
Nevertheless, "Jaws" was the recipient of three sequels back in the 20th century,...

Just when Jason Statham in Meg 2: The Trench made it safe to go back to the water, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at the fourth and final installment that ended it all for the shark franchise that started it all… Jaws: The Revenge!
With Universal Pictures desperately needing a hit after Howard The Duck flopped hard, they went with another Spielberg-free sequel to the 1975 blockbuster classic, with the events of Jaws 3-D ignored and Lorraine Gary coming out of retirement to reprise the role of the now-widowed Ellen Brody, now having to face a new shark that’s coming specifically for her family to avenge what her late husband did to those last two sharks. As the infamous tagline promises: “This Time, It’s Personal.”

Marc Gilpin, best known for portraying the son of Chief Martin Brody in the sequel to “Jaws,” has died at the age of 56.
Peri Gilpin, known for her role as Roz Doyle in “Frasier,” announced that her older brother had passed on Saturday following a long battle with glioblastoma.
Gilpin played Sean Brody in 1978’s “Jaws 2.” He starred alongside Roy Scheider as Brody, Lorraine Gary as Brody’s wife Ellen and his sister, April Gilpin.
Unlike the original seaside horror movie, “Jaws 2” heavily featured the chief’s two kids, Sean and Mike (Mark Gruner). While another great white shark is loose around Amity Island, Mike takes his little brother on an ill-fated boating trip. Brody is once again forced to face off against a dangerous killer, this time to save his sons.

Marc Gilpin, the child actor who played a son of Roy Scheider’s Police Chief Martin Brody in 1978’s Jaws 2, died Saturday in Dallas of the aggressive brain cancer glioblastoma. He was 56.
His death was announced by his sister, the Frasier actor Peri Gilpin.
Marc Gilpin, born in Austin, Texas, had already appeared in commercials, the Saturday morning NBC series Thunder (1977) and, in 1978, the film Where’s Willy? when, at 11, he was cast in director Jeannot Szwarc’s sequel to Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster Jaws. While Scheider and Lorraine Gary reprised their roles as Brody and wife Ellen, the young actors playing the characters’ two sons in the original film, Chris Rebello and Jay Mello, had outgrown the roles and were replaced by Mark Gruner (as elder son Mike) and Gilpin (as Sean).

Marc Gilpin, who played the younger son of Roy Scheider’s Police Chief Martin Brody in Jaws 2, has died. He was 56.
Gilpin died Saturday in Dallas after a long battle with glioblastoma, his older sister, Frasier actress Peri Gilpin, announced.
After answering a casting call, Gilpin beat out hundreds of other boys to get hired as Sean Brody in the 1978 sequel to the blockbuster Jaws (1975), directed by Steven Spielberg. He was 11 when the movie reached theaters.
Jaws 2 was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. Lorraine Gary returned as Chief Brody’s wife, but their sons, Michael and Sean, portrayed by Chris Rebello and Jay Mello in the original, were replaced by Mark Gruner and Gilpin in the second film.
A year later, Gilpin guest-starred on NBC’s CHiPs and appeared with his younger sister, April, on ABC’s Fantasy Island. In 1981, he was in the films The Legend of the Long Ranger and Earthbound.

A good franchise is hard to kill. Bad ones, like the seven-film torture device Police Academy, can be even harder to exterminate. But sometimes doomed series are finally put out of their misery. Up on the shelf they go, doomed to a future of languishing on lists like this one.
The murder weapon is usually money. More specifically, the lack thereof. A big enough failure means a franchise won’t get another chance to pull their act together, and the most spectacular bombs get to live on as warnings to future film students. Even more interesting are the ones that aren’t total flops, the movies that maybe made a profit, but one so small or negligible that their studios decided to put that old franchise to bed, anyway. Here are 15 movies that killed their respective franchises for good.

2023 marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Jaws 2 (watch it Here), the most well-regarded of the Jaws sequels – and Universal is celebrating the occasion by giving the film a 4K Uhd release! Directed by Jeannot Szwarc from a screenplay written by Carl Gottlieb and Howard Sackler, Jaws 2 has the following synopsis: It’s been four years since that marauding great white shark terrorized the small summer resort of Amity; but the shark that Police Chief Brody destroyed wasn’t the only one in the ocean! The same heart-stopping suspense and gripping adventure that enthralled movie audiences throughout the world in Jaws returns in this worthy sequel to that film classic.

Written by Joseph Nixon and Ian Shaw, the look-alike son of legendary actor Robert Shaw, the stage comedy The Shark Is Broken, which goes behind-the-scenes of the filming of the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic Jaws (watch it Here) and sees Shaw taking on the role of his father, made its premiere at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe before moving to the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre in 2021. And now, Deadline reports, The Shark Is Broken is heading to Broadway!
Deadline shares the details: Directed by Guy Masterson, The Shark Is Broken will begin a limited 16-week engagement on Tuesday, July 25, at the John Golden Theatre, with an official opening on Thursday, August 10.
Shaw reprises the role of his father, who played Quint in Jaws. The stage comedy imagines what happened on board Quint’s boat (the Orca) when the cameras stopped rolling during the filming of Spielberg’s blockbuster.
This marks the Broadway debut for Shaw.

2023 marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Jaws 2 (watch it Here), the most well-regarded of the Jaws sequels. So it seems quite appropriate that a cool Jaws 2 discovery had been made this year: The Daily Jaws has found a long-lost scene from the film, and the only known footage of this scene comes from a Brazilian VHS! This leads me to believe that the scene was probably always included in the Brazilian home video release of Jaws 2, but that’s not completely clear from the report on The Daily Jaws.
What we do know is that Jaws 2 begins with a pair of divers being attacked by a shark while checking out the sunken wreckage of the Orca boat from the first movie. Later in the film, Deputy Hendricks (Jeffrey Kramer) is shown to have retrieved the underwater camera that was dropped by the divers. In this lost footage,...

Film adaptations are often perceived as easier to work with. After all, the book is already written so all a screenwriter has to do is follow what the original author laid out, right? Wrong. In researching the 52 books I assembled for “But Have You Read the Book: 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films,” out now from Turner Classic Movies and Running Press, a quote from director W.S. Van Dyke — the director behind the popular adapted mystery series “The Thin Man” — was constant, use the book as a foundation, not a guide.
Half of the fun of reading books that are adapted to movies is in how a screenwriter chooses to use them. Some junk the source material entirely, characters are eliminated, some people die on-screen who live on the page. In the case of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic, “Jaws,” the story of a hungry shark and the men intent...

Creature features have an unrivaled ability to straddle genres, often combining the best of thrills and frights, science fiction, and black comedy, sometimes inadvertently. Some succeed better than others. Weak scripts, shoddy effects, and monsters who don't deliver on scares are all components that separate the best monster movies from the other guys. Luckily, with the right combination of cheesy dialogue and wonky technical effects, you can accidentally stumble upon some of the best the genre offers. A shark hellbent on revenge? Check. Deadly slugs? Yeah, I guess. Murder turtles? Okay, sure. Often, the more ridiculous the logline, the bigger the payoff.
Films like "Jaws" and "Alien" introduced the standard for a monster movie: compelling characters, driving action, and some legitimately frightening foes. They inspired a gaggle of repeat offenders and exploiters. Bad shark movies are still being made, unable to understand how "Jaws" did it. Today, we're doing a...

Summer has always been peak movie season and there certainly have been major releases before 1975. But a combination of elements came together in a perfect storm of entertainment that created something new: the summer blockbuster. You start with a stellar adaptation of Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel in the hands of a young, still-developing but promising director in Steven Spielberg, a strong cast anchored by Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss, and a fresh score from John Williams. Altogether, Jaws burst into the American consciousness. It rewrote the rules for Hollywood success, rules that only recently have been challenged.

“You’re were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off” is and will always be Michael Caine’s most iconic line of all time, uttered in the 1969 British Caper The Italian Job. With a career spanning a hefty 64 years between 1953 and 2017, Caine hits our screens yet again this week starring opposite Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin in Going in Style, a remake of the 1979 heist comedy directed by Zach Braff. It tells the story of a trio of retirees who plan to rob a bank after their pensions are cancelled, proving he isn’t quite ready to hang up his acting shoes to start drawing his own pension.
At the tender age of 84 the man previously known as Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, now known as Sir Michael Caine after being knighted by the queen in 2000, has starred in a staggering 125 films in his career to date. His...

Our latest The Bottom Shelf DVD and Blu-ray round-up features Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, Jaws: The Revenge and Chuck Norris...
With Shark Week arguably America’s most beloved religious festival and the unprecedented worldwide cultural impact of Anthony C. Ferrante’s acclaimed Sharknado trilogy showing no sign of letting up, who could deny the necessity of the Jaws sequels finally getting a Blu-ray release?
The immediate answer is obvious (well, anyone), though this belated look at Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, Jaws: The Revenge and Jaws 5: The Sharkening was, for this writer at least, a nostalgic journey through a world where morbidly obese fish bear grudges, Michael Caine fights a script far deadlier than any marine predator and where lines such as “Weld that sonuvabitch” are somehow deemed passable.
Generally considered the best of the sequels, perhaps Jaws 2 holds a special place in the heart of the reader who,...

It's famously one of the worst sequels ever, but why did Jaws The Revenge go so wrong? Ryan looks at its disastrous nine-month production...
It's an oft-repeated adage that nobody sets out to make a bad movie, but Jaws The Revenge is so legendarily, comically bad that it almost looks like an inside job. The fishy sequel, released in 1987 to scathing reviews, famously stars a rubbery shark that growls when its head rears out of the water, Michael Caine spouting bizarre dialogue and some of the most glaring continuity errors this side of an Ed Wood movie.
What separates Jaws The Revenge from the usual bad-movie crowd is its otherwise decent pedigree. It was the product of a major Hollywood studio. The budget was generous. The director, Joseph Sargent, was far from a hack - a veteran of TV and film, he'd previously made the classic thriller...

From killer bees to Steven Seagal, Michael Caine's seen it all. We celebrate five hilarious performances in five very bad B-movies...
"If there is one thing worse than being offered bad scripts it's being offered none at all," Michael Caine once noted - an admission that might explain some of the roles he's taken on over his long and often wonderful career.
Michael Caine may have attained national treasure status now, but from the late 70s to the middle of the 90s, classic roles like Dr Frank Bryant in Educating Rita and Scrooge The Muppet Christmas Carol were interspersed with some - shall we say - less acclaimed movies. Yet even when the production values were awful, the script stank and the films flopped, Michael Caine's performances often remained fascinating. This isn't to say he was necessarily putting his heart and soul into them -...

In rough cut, Jaws The Revenge had one of the funniest endings ever as the Great White attempted to play chicken with Lorraine Gary’s boat, only to end up impaled on the broken prow. Fearing a disaster, the producers cut the scene from the original theatrical version, which seemed to end with the shark exploding for no clear reason.
If they’d left the scene intact, however, they might’ve been able to sell the picture as a good bad movie. Sound unlikely? That’s exactly what happened when Mommie Dearest (1981), an overwrought adaptation of Christina Crawford’s account of growing up as Joan Crawford’s adopted daughter, left audiences rolling in the aisles.
Viewers were amused by Faye Dunaway’s Ott impersonation of the Hollywood legend, particularly in a sequence where she whips her daughter with a coat hanger while uttering the immortal line, “No wire hangers – Ever!

Since its release 30 years ago, "Back to the Future" has been everyone's favorite time-travel movie. It's remained a must-see long enough for Marty McFly's own kids to enjoy it.
Even so, there's much you may not know about the beloved sci-fi comedy, from the unused ideas that popped up in other films, to why there has yet to (thankfully) be a reboot. To celebrate Back to the Future Day (October 21), here are 30 things you need to know about Marty McFly's first trip through time.
"Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy" is available to own now on Blu-ray & DVD.
1. Director Robert Zemeckis and co-screenwriter Bob Gale (pictured above) tried for years to create a time-travel story. The key came in 1980, when Gale was looking over his father's high school yearbook and wondered whether he and his father would have been friends if they'd both been teenagers at the same time.

Following the massive success of Jaws (1975), producers were chomping at the bit to replicate its grosses. Far too many movies to mention here, but suffice it to say that most were stinkers, and none could put a dent box office – wise in the hull of the Orca. However, one little film somehow managed to not only rake in big bucks in its wake, but paid, ahem, ‘homage’ to the soon to be Universal classic. William Girdler’s Bad Bear Bonanza Grizzly (1976) follows it so closely I’m amazed Jaws doesn’t have a big black snout rammed up its grey finned keister. Regardless of its inspiration, Grizzly is a B movie blast.
Released domestically in May of 1976 by Film Ventures International (and internationally by Columbia Pictures), Grizzly brought in a whopping $39,000,000 Us against a $750,000 budget. An amazing performance at the box office, with no help whatsoever from critics who derided the film as derivative,...

"The shark isn't working!"
The above was a familiar cry during the making of Steven Spielberg's blockbuster classic Jaws. In an era before CGI, it was down to a giant mechanical great white (known as Bruce) to strike fear into audiences.
Unfortunately, the rubber recreation never quite functioned to the crew's wishes, leaving Spielberg to use John Williams's score and a point-of-view camera perspective to do most of the heavy lifting.
It proved to be a masterstroke - not seeing the beast made it ever-more terrifying, and when we did get a glimpse it was fast and violent.

It’s rare that a film is unanimously considered one of the worst of all time, but almost every bottom ten list manages to find room for the fourth entry in the Jaws franchise. Be it the ambiguous nature of the title (who, exactly, is taking revenge?), the wooden performances or the rubber monster haunting the cast on two different coasts, very little of Jaws: The Revenge isn’t awful or incomprehensible. So often mentioned as a trainwreck of a film, it barely seems worth discussing, let alone focusing a whole piece about.
But here we go for the, thankfully, final bout with the legendary monster. Jeannot Swarc, director of Jaws 2, said that the title of his film in his homeland of France translated to “shit.” If only language translation worked the way it should, the French would have reserved that literal translation for two films later.

Interviews are funny things; they often start off one way and then go off into completely unintended territories. Case in point: our latest chat with filmmakers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the twisted minds behind The Collection, which arrives in theaters everywhere this Friday, 11/30.
While chatting with the pair about their latest gorefest, somehow we also ended up talking extensively about several other topics including Jaws 3D and Jaws: The Revenge as well as Piranha 3Dd, For Your Eyes Only and the influence of 90's action flicks on The Collection and how the third Collector flick will be their own horror Return of the King.
Since it was a highly entertaining interview with both Dunstan and Melton, even if we did go off the rails a bit with the pair, we thought we'd share the entire conversation with you fiends right here. Check out our exclusive interview below, and look...

With all the talk of the original Jaws buzzing around the internet due to the awesome new Blu-ray that’s just been released, I thought it might be an idea to take a look at the Jaws sequel, which despite not being as good as the original is still quite a solid attempt at recreating the tension, action and shark bites of the original classic.
Released in 1978, Jaws 2 was on the cards at Universal before the original Jaws even finished its theatrical run. Spielberg was out, but producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown were in. Back in the late seventies, sequels were pretty much frowned upon but after Jaws took the box office by storm it was a no brainer that Universal wanted to try and recreate the magic with another shark finding its way to Amity Island.

Who knew that a movie about a shark, filmed in the 70s before the era of green screen and CG madness, would become one of the most memorable action films of all time?
Closing in on its 40th Anniversary, Jaws makes its way to Blu-ray as part of Universal’s 100th Anniversary series. The fully restored film has been remastered with 7.1 Audio and deservedly comes with a new feature-length documentary.
Jaws centers on the beachside community of Amity. When rumors of a shark attack begin to spread, the locals are more worried about the impact it will have on the summer vacation season and their businesses than the potential safety hazard of having a shark on their beach.
