We all know Mystery Science Theater 3000 as the show in which a human host and a couple of robots make fun of bad movies. According to in-universe lore, the movies come via mad scientist members of the Forrester family, who test the sanity of a human subject by forcing them to watch terrible films. The humans — beginning with Joel Robinson (series creator Joel Hodgson), followed by Mike Nelson (Michael J. Nelson), Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), and Emily Connor (Emily Marsh) — fight back by riffing on the films, a task made easier not just by the robot sidekicks Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, but also by the genuine awfulness of the movies.
But MST3K didn’t always have mockery in mind as its central premise. As seen in the recently-unearthed early episodes recorded for Minneapolis public access channel Ktma, Joel spent more time enjoying Invaders from the Deep and Revenge...

“Woman Warriors in Brutal Death Battle!” This adventure thriller has no reputation to speak of, and is mainly notable as a strange chapter in the topsy-turvy life of Curt Siodmak, who as a producer-writer-director, filmed this and another equally absurd jungle romp on location in Brazil. How Siodmak got these pictures going is a mystery — they received national releases, in Technicolor through Universal-International. CineSavant makes its best, wholly un-researched guesses, breaking all the rules of ethical film reportage. But honest, this is the jungle fantasy populated by Amazon warriors — all painted green.

Kino’s Noir boxes offer interesting noir-adjacent crime and mystery pix. This seventh return to the well of darkness brings up the organized crime ‘meller’ Chicago Confidential with Brian Keith and the more ambitious The Boss, starring John Payne and written by Dalton Trumbo. The third show The Fearmakers is a real oddity. Starring Dana Andrews and directed by Jacques Tourneur, it’s a political conspiracy tale about manipulating opinions with fraudulent polls. It sounds a lot like the fractured state of modern America, 65 years later. With commentaries by Jason A. Ney and Alan K. Rode.

Kate Winslet’s tough but tender small-town police detective Mare Sheehan of HBO’s acclaimed crime thriller “Mare of Easttown” is the latest in a long line of female TV detectives including S. Epatha Merkerson (“Law & Order”); Helen Mirren (“Prime Suspect”); Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer); Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: Svu”) and Regina King (“Watchmen”).
Unfortunately, it took an inordinate amount of time for actresses to get a fair shake in police procedurals. Early TV crime dramas were inundated with the likes of taciturn toughies Lee Marvin (“M Squad”), Robert Taylor (“The Detectives”), Jack Webb (“Dragnet”) and Broderick Crawford (“Highway Patrol”). Way too much testosterone.
But slowly the dynamics began to change especially with the rise of the Women’s Movement. Here’s a look at five trailblazing female cop shows who paved the way.

Sometimes a long-running TV show finds itself linked to a certain holiday. Community had Christmas. The Simpsons has Halloween. Brooklyn 99 had Halloween, then changed it to Cinco de Mayo for scheduling reasons. Saturday Night Live has…Election Day, I guess? I probably should have thought this through a bit more.
While Mystery Science Theater 3000 has done a handful of Christmas-themed episodes, the series has a much deeper relationship with Thanksgiving. Turkey Day is essentially its legacy. It started on Thanksgiving and it always comes back to that one Thursday in late November, whether the show is on the air or not.
Back in 1988, Joel Hodgson created a new show idea inspired by a random image from the liner notes of an Elton John album, wherein a couple of silhouettes sit in front of a movie screen. He and some robot puppets would watch bad movies and crack jokes. While the...

Unsung actress Beverly Garland becomes TV’s first lady cop, in what’s claimed to be the first TV show filmed on the streets of New York City. This one-season wonder from 1957 has vintage locations, fairly tough-minded storylines and solid performances, from Bev and a vast gallery of stage and TV actors on the way up.

Lenny Bruce: Dustin Hoffman in the 1974 Bob Fosse movie. Lenny Bruce movie review: Polemical stand-up comedian merited less timid biopic (Oscar Movie Series) Bob Fosse's 1974 biopic Lenny has two chief assets: the ever relevant free speech issues it raises and the riveting presence of Valerie Perrine. The film itself, however, is only sporadically thought-provoking or emotionally gripping; in fact, Lenny is a major artistic letdown, considering all the talent involved and the fertile material at hand. After all, much more should have come out of a joint effort between director Fosse, fresh off his Academy Award win for Cabaret; playwright-screenwriter Julian Barry, whose stage version of Lenny earned Cliff Gorman a Tony Award; two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy); and cinematographer Bruce Surtees (Play Misty for Me, Blume in Love). Their larger-than-life subject? Lenny Bruce, the stand-up comedian who became one of the...

Though he's perhaps best known for writing The Scarlet Letter, author Nathaniel Hawthorne also left his mark on the macabre, penning tales that can still be told to chilling effect around the campfire. Three of these stories made it onscreen in Sidney Salkow's 1963 anthology horror film, Twice-Told Tales. Not long after announcing they are bringing Burnt Offerings to Blu-ray and DVD this October, Kino Lorber has revealed they have another Halloween goodie up their sleeve, as they will also release Twice-Told Tales on Blu-ray and DVD before the flickering flames of jack-o'-lanterns cast shadows across your doorstep.
Via Facebook, Kino Lorber announced they will release Twice-Told Tales (1963) on Blu-ray and DVD with a brand new HD transfer this October.
Directed by Sidney Salkow, Twice-Told Tales stars Vincent Price, Sebastian Cabot, Brett Halsey, Beverly Garland, Richard Denning and Joyce Taylor. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more updates on this release.

February was Women in Horror Recognition Month and there are plenty of women that we recognize in horror year round.
Consider the “Scream Queens” we all know and love—Michelle Bauer, Janet Leigh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Linnea Quigley, Marilyn Burns, Elsa Lanchester, Brinke Stevens, Camille Keaton, Sybil Danning, Ingrid Pitt, Barbara Steele, Fay Wray, and Beverly Garland.
But there are countless other women, actresses, writers, directors, who you may not know and don’t get proper recognition.
Here's a short list of some female directors that deserve to be mentioned.
Barbara Peters - Humanoids From The Deep (1980)
Katt Shea - Stripped To Kill (1987), Dance Of The Damned (1988), Poison Ivy (1992)
Ida Lupino - The Hitch Hiker (1953)
Elizabeth Fies - The Commune (2009)
Jennifer Chambers Lynch - Boxing Helena (1993)

The title “Scream Queen” became popular in the late 70′s & is still popular today. But in actuality they’ve been around since the fifties, they just weren’t given the title of “Scream Queen”. Beverly Garland (The Alligator People), Mara Corday (Tarantula) & Yvette Vickers (Attack Of The Killer Leeches) are perfect examples of actresses who became very familiar to moviegoers in the fifties & sixties who frequented horror/sci-fi films. The tradition continued through the sixties (Barbara Steele) & seventies (Caroline Munro, Jamie Lee Curtis). But the eighties was the decade that the title “Scream Queen” became very well known & … More...

It was a little over a year ago that we first heard about Dennis Willman's new comic series Ginger-Stein: Rise of the Undead, and now that the first issue is about to launch on Tuesday, October 11th, we have a lot more details and an image gallery to share.
From the Press Release:
On October 11th artistic mastermind Dennis Willman reveals his newest creation, Ginger-Stein, to the world. Ginger-Stein is the title of a multimedia horror/sci-fi project that is written, created, and illustrated by Willman and is unlike anything the horror audience has ever seen.
Ginger-Stein: Rise of the Undead is the first in a set of six comic book mini-series featuring horror’s hottest new heroine. The story and artwork are deeply rooted in 1980’s horror and sci-fi nostalgia. The violence is over-the-top, and like any good 80’s horror story, there’s sex, drugs, and a breaking of...

“What? You’re moving to Los Angeles to do What?”
That was the reaction from the majority of my Oregonian friends when I unveiled my plan to come to Hollywood and score films full-time. To this day, I catch shit from my friends up north for “going California”. They don’t understand how I could just voluntarily forfeit the simple life of Oregon to live and work in one of America’s busiest and most expensive cities… not to mention in an industry that serves up entertainment and fictional escapism as its mainstay product. (We won’t mention the fact that they flock to the cinemas in droves on weekends to sample what we are serving up. We’ll just pretend we don’t know about that little tidbit.)

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition. And it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone.”
Or so ran the opening monologue of Rod Serling’s science fiction anthology series…
In each half-hour episode an intelligent, mysterious and often horrific and disturbing scenario was showcased, highlighting the prevalent social & political concerns of the time. While other releases in the Shout! Factory’s Roger Corman’s Cult Classics focus on his producing credits, the recent Sci-Fi Classics showcases three of his early directorial works. Oh, he also produced all three, worked with the writers on the scripts and even pitched the projects to investors. Like many directors today, when you call something a "Corman film", it’s because he’s influenced the project from the start.
First up is Attack of the Crab Monsters, which manages to be quite effective despite its ludicrous premise. A group of scientists arrive on a remote Pacific island to study the effects of fallout from recent nuclear testing in the Pacific. They also want to discover what happened to the first team, which disappeared without a trace.

Encino, CA - While Charles Nelson Reilly is beloved for his time on Match Game, there’s more to this actor than Dumb Dora answers. He was the toast of Broadway with roles in Hello Dolly and Bye, Bye, Birdie and won the Tony for How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Later in life he directed several plays on the Great White Way. While many actors sum up their lives in thick tomes, Charles created a one-man show. He was a stage performer so this was the best way to distill his experiences for an audience. The Life of Reilly captures his final performance before his passing in 2007.
After playing the festival circuit and a limited theatrical release, Life of Reilly is finally out on DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes. You can take Charles every where. In edition to the feature film, there’s tons of bonus features including...

The first thing people will notice about horror director Alan Rowe Kelly (Don't Look In The Basement, I'll Bury You Tomorrow) is that he is a gender bender, but Kelly has been bending more then genders his entire career as he has broken out the idea of conventionality. At the age of 39, with 40 just right around the corner, he had an epiphany. Bored with a career as a stylist, he made the sudden and dramatic move to horror. First testing the waters as an author, he switched over to the world of indie horror film directing where he won great acclaim for "I"ll Bury You Tomorrow". As he continued to direct films, he also started making a name for himself in the indie horror world as an actor playing power players, agents, something that rhymes with witch, etc. These were powerful, empowered characters that personally reflected upon Alan Rowe Kelly himself.

Remember when I took that really strong stance about not making out with guys in reptile suits? Well, that was before I saw The Alligator People. And The Alligator People is a game changer.
For a while I have been pondering how to write about this movie without giving it all away, but I now think that the only correct way to handle this particular 1959 Roy Del Ruth gem from the Fox vault is, in fact, to give it all away. So brace yourself for mad spoilers. However, since the title is The Alligator People, hopefully I'm not ruining anything for you when I tell you that in this flick, there are people and there are alligators, and some low rent 50s style black and white sci-fi (think giant lasers, radioactivity experiments and mad scientists) that results in alligator people. My hope is that if any of this info comes as a surprise to you,...

Sheriff Won't Budge in Charlie Sheen Plea
Charlie Sheen is going to have a hard time nabbing the plea deal he thought he was getting, because we've learned the sheriff ain't budging ... and Charlie could end up working at a dump.
Sources at the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department tell TMZ .. Sheriff Bob Braudis still insists he never signed off or gave permission to give Charlie work release. We're told the Sheriff is pissed at a local reporter who wrote that Braudis confirmed that Charlie would be able to smoke during work release. Sheriff Bob says he was misquoted.
The Sheriff, we're told, is letting the Jail Administrative Officer, Beverly Campbell, run the show. Sources say Bev is clear -- Charlie is not eligible for work release.
If he serves time, the only way he can get out during the day is under the Useful Public Service program (Ups). The way...

Charlie Sheen’s plea deal fell through on June 7, TMZ is reporting. Beverly Campbell, who supervises the work release program at the Pitkin County Jail where the ‘Two and a Half Men’ star was supposed to serve a 30 day-sentence, refused to honor the agreement. Even though the Pitkin County Sheriff, the under-sheriff, the lead prosecutor and Pitkin County District Attoney Marty Beeson all signed off on the deal, Campbell had problems with the way it was structured. As a result, the Sheriff said he won’t make Campbell enforce the plea agreement, which was Sheen’s punishment for assaulting his wife Brooke Mueller on Christmas Day in their Aspen home. Charlie Sheen May Be Screwed in Plea Deal
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... the Pitkin County Sheriff will not go along with the plea deal that was supposed to be approved yesterday -- and Charlie Sheen's lawyer says it just ain't right.
TMZ broke the story ... the plea deal went south yesterday because Beverly Campbell, the Jail Administrative Officer, was adamantly opposed to giving Charlie work release. Campbell felt Charlie was only eligible for "Useful Public Service" -- Ups. Under Ups, Charlie would not be allowed to smoke or eat outside the jail, and his hours of freedom would be more limited than work release.
Sheriff Bob Braudis refused yesterday to order his underling to approve work release for Charlie, even though multiple sources tell TMZ Braudis had already given thumbs up to a signed plea deal between the prosecutor and Charlie -- a plea deal that specifically approves work release.
