By all accounts Kaiser Wilhelm II was hardly a great leader. He put Germany onto its fateful course towards World War I and shortly after defeat was forced to abdicate the throne into exile at the secluded Netherlands mansion Huis Doorn. Alan Judd would eventually write an historical fiction novel entitled The Kaiser’s Last Kiss about the former crown holder and an incident involving the Nazis, Gestapo, and Hitler’s right-hand Heinrich Himmler—with the potential for redemption. Christopher Plummer would read said book, let his manager know of his interest, and wait ten years before another’s option lapsed so it could fall into their hands. Simon Burke would crack the screenplay, theater director David Leveaux would be hired to helm his debut, and The Exception would be born.
Plummer takes on the role of Wilhelm, now an aged master of the mansion living on the allowance of the Reich’s pity.

"Can an officer have a loyalty to anything greater than his country?" A24 has unveiled a trailer for a WWII romantic thriller titled The Exception, based on a novel by Alan Judd titled "The Kaiser's Last Kiss". The film stars Jai Courtney as a German soldier investigating the Dutch resistance in Holland, looking for a spy in the home of Kaiser Wilhelm. He meets a young Jewish Dutch woman played by Lily James and falls in love with her, hence the title (she's "the exception"). The full cast includes Christopher Plummer, Ben Daniels, Janet McTeer, Eddie Marsan, Mark Dexter, and Martin Swabey. This honestly doesn't look half bad, but I'm not sure it seems that good either. Lily James is great, but Jai Courtney not so much. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for David Leveaux's The Exception, originally from USA Today: A German soldier (Jai Courtney) tries to...

Sherlock co-creator and actor Mark Gatiss has revealed that his version of Mycroft is inspired by Labour politician Peter Mandelson.
Incidentally, the 48-year-old is now about to play Mandelson himself in Channel 4's new drama Coalition.
"I based Mycroft on Peter Mandelson," he told Radio Times. "It was explicit even before I was going to play him.
"Steven Moffat and I talked about how Mandelsonian Mycroft was... Conan Doyle says Mycroft is the British government. He's the power behind the throne.
"Both Mandelson and Mycroft are the sort of people who, I think, would sit out a world war. There's a longer game to be played."

Playing Nick Clegg in Channel 4's Coalition was "daunting", actor Bertie Carvel has admitted.
The 90-minute drama, written by James Graham, charts Clegg's rise in popularity ahead of the 2010 general election and the subsequent forming of a coalition government by the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
"It's daunting - because we're playing people who are so high-profile," Carvel told members of the press.
"One could feel as though you could only fail - because they're so present for our audience - but the minute you divest yourself of that daunting responsibility and just try to serve the play that James has written... we just made it our own."
Carvel called the drama "meticulously researched", with writer Graham insisting that all of the events seen in Coalition are based on fact.
"It's a drama, so the dialogue is imagined by me - what those scenes behind closed doors would be like,...

Bertie Carvel has revealed that his portrayal of Nick Clegg will be a "portrait" rather than an impression.
The Babylon actor will play the Deputy Prime Minister in the upcoming Channel 4 drama Coalition, which charts the dramatic rise of the Liberal Democrat leader.
Speaking to Digital Spy about taking on the role, he said: "The idea of perfecting Nick Clegg is interesting. The perfect Nick Clegg is living and breathing and walking this earth. I can't do it better than him.
"That's not my objective really, I think I can only fail if I were trying to perfect it. What I'm trying to perfect is the Nick Clegg we see in our drama, which doesn't involve an awful lot of looking at the real him.
"It's a portrait, not a lithograph. It's a perspective, and I really hope that it has integrity."

NBC's newest adventure series has had a rocky journey. The network believed in the Crusoe TV show enough to give it lots of promotion but saddled it with a Friday timeslot, one of the least-watched nights of television. Did the series ever have a chance for survival?
Crusoe is based on the 1719 Robinson Crusoe novel by Daniel Defoe. The series follows the adventures of a young man, Robinson Crusoe (Philip Winchester), who leaves his wife, Susannah (Anna Walton), and children to go to the high-seas in search of riches to settle his impending debts. Crusoe ends up stranded on a remote island where he befriends a native named Friday (Tongayi Chirisa). While trying to find a way off the remote island, the two must battle the elements and intruders for survival.
