The time has come for producers to think about how to protect themselves against possible copyright and ownership challenges related to the use of generative AI tools in film and TV production.
That was one of the messages sent Saturday at the Producers Guild of America’s 14th annual Produced By conference in Los Angeles, featuring a daylong schedule of panels drilling down on digital disruption and other pressing issues for content producers.
“I don’t know if an artist I commission is using generative AI. I didn’treally care before, but I guess I have to care now,” said Lori McCreary, CEO of Revelations Entertainment and a past PGA president, during the hourlong “AI: What Every Producer Needs to Know” session moderated by Carolyn Giardina, senior entertainment technology and crafts editor for Variety and Variety VIP+.

If its wins at the recent Screen Actors Guild Awards did not send enough of a message that “Oppenheimer” is far and away the frontrunner for Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars, the film’s receiving the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures at the Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday, February 25 almost certainly sealed the deal.
In her acceptance speech, “Oppenheimer” executive producer Emma Thomas was quick to to first thank the guild in general for the work that they do, as earlier in the evening, PGA co-presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line announced a historic initiative to fund health insurance for full-time working producers in the guild. After that, however, she was also sure to make note of how writer/director Christopher Nolan (both her husband and business partner) also happens to be “the best producer. He’s absolutely brilliant.”

At the 35th annual PGA Awards on Sunday, the Producers Guild of America announced an initiative aimed at ensuring health insurance benefits for every qualified producer working full-time in the film and TV industry.
“Producers, unlike unionized creative professionals in the industry, lack guaranteed health insurance benefits. No one should go without these essential benefits. Producing is challenging enough without the added anxiety of wondering how you are going to obtain health coverage for you and your family,” PGA presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line said in a statement.
The guild is asking that all production companies, including studios and streamers, provide health benefits for qualified producers with credits recognized by the PGA who are working full-time on their eligible projects by (1) making contributions through the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plan for eligible producers on qualifying productions; and (2) for all other producers who can’t access benefits...

The Producers Guild of America used the platform of its annual awards ceremony Sunday to launch a drive to help secure health insurance coverage for Hollywood’s working producers. The guild is asking studios, streamers and other large-scale content companies to help fund health insurance for “qualified producers” through line items in TV and film production budgets.
PGA presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line unveiled the health care initiative during their address to the audience at the Hollywood & Highland’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. The push is designed to close the gap between producers and Hollywood’s other creative guilds by giving those who meet PGA criteria easy access to health insurance coverage.

Many awards ceremonies champion themselves as stepping stones to the Oscars, but the Producers Guild of America Awards — to be presented Feb. 25 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom — have an enviable track record to support the claim. The winner of the PGA’s top prize, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, has matched the Oscar winner for best picture for 15 of the last 20 years, and 24 of the 33 years since the first ceremony in 1990.
For Donald De Line, a studio exec turned producer who serves as PGA president alongside Stephanie Allain, the guild’s track record adds to the anticipation surrounding the pre-Oscar kudofest. “Part of the fun is the horse race and the excitement of it all,” he says.
This year, the 10 Zanuck nominees are a 100% match for those on the Oscar ballot for best picture, and the event falls in the middle of final voting for the Academy Awards.

There will be no second season for MGM+ series Chapelwaite. The show’s co-creator and executive producer Jason Filardi announced the news on X (fka Twitter), and Deadline has confirmed.
“I’m afraid Captain Boone’s story ends on that beach of weathered, Maine sand,” Filardi wrote. “There will be no Season 2. Thank you to all the Chapelwaite fans!”
Starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire, the 1850-set series followed Captain Charles Boone (Brody), who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy Maine town of Preacher’s Corners after his wife dies at sea. However, Charles soon has to confront the secrets of his family’s sordid history and fight to end the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations.

The Epix television show Chapelwaite was described as being a ten episode limited series that would tell the story of Stephen King’s short story Jerusalem‘s Lot, which was a prequel to his novel Salem’s Lot… but after the show’s run came to an end, it was announced that Chapelwaite season 2 was in the works. While the first season had covered the entirety of King’s story, in its own way, the second season was going to go beyond the source material to tell its own original story. But things have changed in the year and half since it appeared that Chapelwaite season 2 was a sure thing, and now showrunner Jason Filardi has taken to social media to confirm that the new season isn’t going to happen after all.

On Tuesday morning, a letter signed by over 2,300 film and TV producers was sent to the president of the organization that bargains on behalf of studios and streamers with Hollywood unions, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Its message to AMPTP leader Carol Lombardini: Please remove the word “producers” from your organization’s title.
The letter, a copy of which was shared with The Hollywood Reporter, explained that “the inclusion of ‘Producers’ in your name inaccurately implies that all producers are part of this organization,” and noted that none of the independent producers who signed are members of the AMPTP. The letter continued that while AMPTP member companies “may technically ‘produce’ film and television in the verb definition of the word, the noun producer reflects a job and role on a film and television crew that is not what the AMPTP member companies or their employees do.

The post-9/11 world was rough on "Star Trek." The not-super-popular "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted on September 26, 2001, and the world wasn't in the mood. The U.S. president at the time, George W. Bush, began to affect violent, revenge-forward rhetoric, and many U.S. citizens were in a bitter, wounded mindset. While some may say that the utopian future of "Trek" was needed at that time, one can see how its idealism felt out of place. "Star Trek" would have us reaching out to our enemies and solving problems through diplomacy. That suggested course of action didn't sit well with a nation itching to enact justice. It's no wonder films like "The Avengers" took off in the post-9/11 milieu; the Avengers avenge the destruction of our cities. Diplomacy was out, freelance super-powered military mercs were in.
So when "Enterprise" was canceled in 2005 after four seasons, it seemed that "Star Trek" was at an end.

Billy the Kid will be back on TV screens very soon.
MGM+ this week that Billy the Kid Season 2 will debut on Sunday, October 15, at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.
There is a little bit of a catch:
Four episodes of the season will air this year, with the final four being held until 2024.
A reason for the decision has not been revealed, but there's a good chance it has something to do with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

On Saturday, Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line shepherded their first-ever Producers Guild of America Awards as presidents of the trade organization. The starry event, honoring Top Gun: Maverick’s Tom Cruise and Never Have I Ever’s Mindy Kaling among others, celebrated some of the field’s greatest successes in 2022, with the wide-ranging plaudits reflecting that “there is room for all scale and scope of films to coexist,” argues De Line.
Still, in their new posts, the pair of former executives (De Line was head of production at Paramount Pictures, Allain svp of production at Columbia Pictures) and current full-time producers face an increasingly challenged business environment for their line of work. Major items on their agenda to tackle during their two-year term, which began in September, include waning profit participation and studio overall deals, a lack of inclusive, go-to healthcare option and slashed fees for producers. As both the WGA and DGA head into talks for contract negotiations with the AMPTP, producers at last night’s PGA awards had a wait-and-see attitude.
Much of that has to do with the fact that the WGA hasn’t set its pattern of demands yet with talks set to begin on March 20. Their contract expires on May 1, while DGA and SAG-AFTRA’s expires on June 30.
As they have done in the past, studios are preparing for a potential strike but there is no real sense of urgency, at least not for now.
“We’re getting in as many scripts as we can in time, but not going crazy, and we have our productions planned for what’s going next in the summer and the fall, and we feel pretty optimistic about what we have in front of us creatively,” said Warner Bros Co-Chairman Pamela Abdy, who was co-honored with...

Steven Spielberg thought he was done processing before shooting The Fabelmans, a movie loosely based on his youth as an amateur filmmaker and his parents’ complicated relationship. He’d done that during the script phase when working with writer Tony Kushner. Kristie Macosko Krieger, Spielberg’s longtime producing partner, still made sure to surround the filmmaker with his most trusted collaborators. Her instincts were right.
“He’d say, ‘I got it, I got it.’ But on set he broke down quite a bit. He was having memories flooding back from his childhood,” Krieger said at the Producers Guild of America’s annual Nominees Breakfast in Los Angeles on Saturday (an unexpected twist this year was a historic winter storm battering Southern California). “He was entrusting his life with us.”

Film and television producers are, at the core, accomplished problem-solvers on myriad levels. For Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line, who currently share the presidency of the Producers Guild of America, the prevailing problems for its membership are downright existential.
“The biggest refrain is ‘How can we get health insurance?’” says Allain, whose producing projects have included everything from “Boyz N the Hood” and “Muppets in Space” to “Dear White People” and the Academy Awards telecast.
“And ‘How do you make a living as a producer?’” adds De Line, the former Touchstone Films exec responsible for mega-hits such as “Pretty Woman” and “Armageddon,” and whose prodigious producorial output includes “The Italian Job,” “Ready Player One” and a forthcoming Billy the Kid limited series.
De Line points out that the Producers Guild is not a union, like many of its professional counterparts for directors and screenwriters, but a trade organization, which...
