Anthony Hopkins is one of the pillars of British cinema and is most recognizable for his classic works on Hannibal, The Silence of the Lambs, and Amistad, to name a few. But, even with a stellar career, he could not help but sometimes feel disappointed with and unenthusiastic about Hollywood.

Released on March 8 this year, Kung Fu Panda 4 has swept the box office with its kung-fu prowess. Starring Jack Black as the clumsy panda turned Dragon Warrior Po, the movie has garnered positive acclaim from both critics and audiences alike. It owes much of its success to the captivating performances of Chameleon ( Viola Davis) and Zhen (Awkwafina) among other characters.

Clipped, the dramatization of the real-life 2013 racism scandal of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling adapted from both the real-world events and the ESPN 30 for 30 podcast covering them entitled The Sterling Affairs, presented a unique challenge for me as a critic because I don’t follow sports. I never have and what familiarity I do have is mostly related to Philadelphia teams, not Los Angeles.
So, having no prior knowledge or investment in the real-world story, though as far as I can tell it is largely accurate, the LA Clippers, or even professional basketball, would I be able to even follow the narrative, let alone get invested in it? The answer, shockingly enough, is yes. Clipped is a remarkably strong drama with some brilliant performances and a surprising amount of biting political commentary. How did they pull it off? Let’s discuss.

If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

Larry David’s beloved comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is gearing up for a grand showing at the Primetime Emmys. The 12th and final season of the HBO/Max series has submitted for 35 nominations, including the top prize for outstanding comedy series.
Playing a fictionalized version of himself, David is again vying for the lead comedy actor category. He hopes to unseat last year’s winner and current frontrunner, Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear.” Though David is a two-time Emmy winner for writing and creating “Seinfeld,” he has yet to win as an actor despite six nominations, the last of which came in 2008.
Supporting actors J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, two-time former nominee Cheryl Hines and Tracey Ullman will also compete in the main acting categories, as well as a posthumous submission for Richard Lewis, who died in February.

"Breaking Bad" is one of the great television tragedies of all time, following high school chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston) on an incredible downward spiral after he decides to start dealing meth in the wake of a devastating health diagnosis. There are quite a few truly soul-crushing moments throughout the show's five-season run because no one was really safe and major characters could get taken out in an instant — heck, even the show's beating heart, Jesse (Aaron Paul), almost bought the farm back in season 1! But one of the most heart-wrenching scenes of all has nothing to do with death, instead happening when Walt abducts his infant daughter, Holly, in the season 5 scorcher "Ozymandias."
In an oral history of the seminal episode for The Ringer, director Rian Johnson, writer and executive producer Moira Walley-Beckett, and Cranston revealed that the most devastating part of that scene was actually improvised by the child actor playing Holly,...

When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.
“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
And over nearly 70 films, that openness has kept Karpen and his small but mighty staff in the game. While Bleecker is celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of its competitors haven’t managed to survive in a business that’s only become more treacherous to navigate. Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy came with a lot of expectations. The film was one of the first to bring stunt people, who are some of the hardest workers in Hollywood, to the forefront. It also came with an exceptional cast of actors and was directed by one of the most predominant filmmakers and stuntmen in Hollywood, David Leitch. The same was the case for Henry Cavill’s Argylle, which was set to earn impressive figures.

However, when both of these movies were released, the reactions of the audience were not what the creators expected. While both of these movies earned a considerable amount during their box-office run, they seemed to have failed to top this year’s charts. Although the year is not yet complete, these numbers are quite telling.

Criminal dramas about defenders of justice were once popular only in the procedural format, but the industry developed by leaps and bounds. Over time, we began to receive full-fledged dramas at the level of feature films with the best actors of our time.
One of the most popular projects in this genre was White Collar – an exciting series about a sophisticated, elegant, handsome intellectual, formerly one of the elite of the criminal world, and now an FBI consultant, Neal Caffrey, who, together with Agent Peter Burke, solves the most complex crimes in New York.
However, while White Collar and Suits received its fair share of love from the viewers, another project remained in the shadows completely undeservedly.

Dave Bautista and Jeff Bridges lead a stacked cast which will flip the Beowulf story and presumably also feature a puppet or two in the mix.
Here’s a fine story to kick off the week. The legendary Jim Henson Company is set to make Grendel, a live action version of Beowulf, the epic tale of heroes, monsters and the clashes between them.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Palisades Park Pictures is launching sales for the project at the upcoming Cannes marketplace. We’ve seen the tale of Beowulf rendered on the silver screen before of course, with Robert Zemeckis' 2007 version re-telling the Old English epic poem through the medium of computer animation.
Although that film is sometimes floated as an example in debates about the merits or shortcomings of CGI experimentation, it boasted an impressive cast that included Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright and Crispin Glover...

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. We have also had numerous adaptations of the work, including the animated film from 2007, but all of them focused on the heroic tale of Beowulf, the hero of the story. But, the story also has another important character – Grendel – the monster and Beowulf’s rival in the story.

If you thought the twisted characters in Game of Thrones, which were adapted from George R.R. Martin’s acclaimed novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, were the epitome of evil, think again.

16 years ago, the audience saw the first season of Breaking Bad, which later became the most favorite series for millions of viewers around the world. AMC’s crime drama has become notorious for changing its tone, initially containing buddy comedy elements, towards a darker tale about a person betraying all his ideals on his way to power.
The character development of the show’s main character, Walter White, who turns into a relentless drug lord, passed through a number of the essential check-point moments, proving the horror of Walter’s transformation, with one of them standing out of them.
Breaking Bad fans would agree that the most devastating events of the whole show are Jane’s death and the following Wayfarer 515 disaster, closing the second season in 2009. As you can remember, it was White who was partially responsible for both of them.

Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.
A still from Lawrence of Arabia
Also, movies that are based on true events are another way of documenting the particular incident, albeit a portion of fictionalization may alter the accuracy, but for cinema’s sake, filmmakers enjoy the basic freedom to have their own touch to the narrative. Throughout history, movies like The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard, or it would be criminal not to mention David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and several other movies have claimed the Best Picture Oscars. Here is a list of six movies that won an Oscar in the Best Picture category.

The evolution of filmmaking spanning the past 50 years has been drastic. An actress as accomplished as Scarlett Johansson would obviously be aware of those changes while picking out potential scripts and sniffing out critical hits. And among all the actors whose films would be worthy of being rebooted or remade, there couldnʼt be a more affluent actor than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fortunately, Johanssonʼs need to establish herself in her own space rather than gain success by walking in someone elseʼs shadow saved her from falling into the trappings of the remake curse.

If you ask a Breaking Bad fan what’s the most dramatic and intense scene of the show, they will likely tell you about Ozymandias, a Season 5 Episode 14 moment that had us hold our breath and squirm at the edge of our seats.
Masterfully crafted, beautifully shot, and fantastically acted, that scene was a defining moment for Walter White—a moment when he realized he’d lost his family, and nothing would ever be the same. But could it have gone differently?
In that scene, Skyler, played by Anna Gunn, had a physical altercation with Walter (Bryan Cranston) when she accused him of murdering Hank. Walter tried to get his son and his wife to leave with him, hoping to one-up the consequences of his own actions (Hank did die indirectly because of Walter), but Skyler was not on board with the idea.
The viewers then got a shot of a moral dilemma,...

You don’t have to be a scientist — or a high school chemistry teacher turned meth boss, for that matter — to know Breaking Bad had an electric, explosive energy all its own.
The addictive crime drama, created by Vince Gilligan, debuted in 2008 and unfolded over five gripping seasons. It found Bryan Cranston breaking bad as Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher, who, after learning of his cancer diagnosis, makes and sells meth as a way to provide a future for his family. He partners up with a former delinquent student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), and the duo create a criminal empire. This attracts the attention of Walt’s DEA agent brother-in-law, a shady defense attorney who’d go on to get a show of his own, the owner of a fast-food chain and countless drug kingpins and henchmen.

In the tradition of “The Naked Gun”, the 1950’s detective crime drama series “Tightrope!" will be ‘re-imagined’ as a slapstick comedy series for The Roku Channel, fronted by Emmy winner Ty Burrell and executive produced by “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston for his Moonshot Entertainment:
“…through reimagined dialogue and a new lead actor in Ty Burrell, ‘Tightrope!’ reshapes the drama of the vintage 1950’s series into a slapstick comedy, where Burrell plays a lone wolf detective following cases city to city, while he searches for his long-lost love who got away…”

Cranston’s Moonshot previously produced “Your Honor” (Showtime), “Sneaky Pete” (Amazon), “Dangerous Book for Boys” (Amazon), “Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams” (Amazon...

Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

Anna Gunn is simply stunning in the recently released Apple TV series, Sugar. Not only does the actress do an incredible job, but it seems refreshing to see her once again on the screen, for it has been a while since she was last seen there. It was the script of the Colin Farrell-starrer series that eventually made her say yes to the show.
Breaking Bad
While she enjoyed working along with Farrell and the rest of the talented cast, the set also turned into a small impromptu reunion with her Breaking Bad cast and crew. In a recent interview, while discussing the said reunion, the actress also made some remarks about the hate she received for her Breaking Bad character and how people’s perception of Skyler has changed.

Director Gareth Edwards' 2014 "Godzilla" has become a rather important movie in the history of the now 70-year-old franchise. Not only was it the first American-produced film to feature the legendary monster since 1998's disastrous attempt by Roland Emmerich, but it also kicked off Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse, which is still going strong today. But even back then, excitement was palpable and the production had to try and keep a tight lid on things. In some cases, those were fruitless efforts.
Many films use code names during production to help throw people off the scent. For "Godzilla," the powers that be decided to refer to the movie as "Nautilus," which is seemingly a reference to the USS Nautilus. During a 2014 on-set interview conducted by Collider with one of the film's stars, Bryan Cranston, the actor was asked whether or not he says the word "Godzilla" in the film. It's then...

James McAvoy knew just what needed to be done to make his mark in the X-Men franchise as Professor X after Patrick Stewart’s unforgettable performances.
The best thing about bringing comic book characters to life is that they are not limited to just one actor. Over time, many actors have replaced each other in order to bring our favorite superheroes to life. However, sometimes a person is so perfect for a role that you cannot ever imagine someone else in their shoes. The best example to support this statement is Patrick Stewart and his run as Charles Xavier a.k.a. Professor X.
Sir Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in X-Men: The Last Stand
The actor has become synonymous with the role, having played him in several X-Men films, except X-Men: First Class. In this film, James McAvoy took over the responsibility of playing a younger Professor X.

It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...
