Steven Spielberg's filmmaking techniques took a large bound forward in 2001 with the release of "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The sci-fi film, set in a near future populated by conscious androids, was a project Spielberg took over from an ailing Stanley Kubrick, who passed on it when he felt Spielberg could do it better. In "A.I.," Spielberg's photography and editing were very different from the slick, adventure films and glossy prestige pictures he had become popular making. Now everything was hazy, staid, more deliberate.
Although he had already won three Oscars (two for "Schindler's List" and one for "Saving Private Ryan") and was widely considered to be a reigning master of Hollywood's blockbuster class, Spielberg evolved. After 2001, Spielberg's career bifurcated into dispassionate effects-based thrillers wherein the filmmaker was merely experimenting, and deeply passionate political thrillers that used the politics of the past to reflect on issues of the day.

The career of Scott Frank got a lengthy deep dive courtesy of a profile in The New Yorker that revealed the writer-director has a $300,000 weekly fee as a Hollywood script doctor. Frank acknowledges this fee is “insane,” but being a script doctor is how he’s made a life for himself despite being a credited screenwriter on films by Steven Soderbergh (“Out of Sight”), Barry Sonnenfield (“Get Shorty”), James Mangold and more. He’s also the Emmy-winning writer and director of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” Plus, $300,000 a week feels earned after putting the finishing touches on nearly 60 films, including “Saving Private Ryan,” “Night at the Museum,” “Unfaithful,” “The Ring,” “Gravity” and “a lot of the X-Men movies.”
A “script doctor” is the term given to a screenwriter hired to punch up or reshape a pre-existing script, be it smoothing out a messy third act or overhauling the dialogue to make a character more memorable.

Netflix and Disney+’s move into the advertising-based video on demand (AVOD) business may actually wind up ceding power to another segment of the streaming industry. The platforms that house and distribute these streamers — such as Roku, Samsung TVs, Google TVs and Amazon Fire devices — will not only gain revenue and precious viewership data, but a long-term leverage in future negotiations with the streamer. “AVOD and Fast [free ad-supported streaming TV] will eventually generate tens of billions in revenue annually in the U.S.,” said Jon Cohen, SVP of Frequency, a provider of ad-supported content packaging distribution. “But the new gatekeepers are the platforms themselves.” Digital video advertising spending is expected to reach nearly 50 billion this year and account for more than 55 of total global ad spending in 2022. “Big government” is a dirty word for many people in politics, but what does it actually mean? A new lighthearted documentary series from Netflix wants to find out.
“The G Word with Adam Conover” aims to dig into the sprawling bureaucracy that makes up the executive branch of the federal government. Each episode will feature the “Adam Ruins Everything” host examining a different area of the government, complete with interviews from employees at obscure agencies that many Americans probably didn’t know existed.
Netflix’s synopsis of the show describes it as “a hybrid comedy-documentary series that pulls back the curtain on the surprising ways the U.S. government impacts our everyday lives, from the mundane to the life-changing. With his signature blend of irreverence and insight, Conover explores the government’s triumphs, failures, and what we might be able to do to change it.”

Two years on from Welcome to Chechnya, David France returns with another rip-roaring take on urgent real-world events with How To Survive A Pandemic, an on-the-ground, in-the-rooms account of the first two years of Covid-19 and the race to produce a vaccine; or what France refers to as our “route out.” With dedicated coverage (he began shooting as soon as two weeks into lockdown) and remarkable insider sources, France has constructed a film he hopes will prove definitive of its time in years to come.
It’s as rigorous as it is selective. France sets a clear plan of action: to examine the greatest global, communal, medical achievement ever. And he sticks to it. It’s not on the same level as Chechnya and all that film’s radical effects and gripping, heart-wrenching urgency, but France (who spent years in long-form reporting) has a knack for bringing real propulsion and emotion to his stories.

A decade ago, when his documentary “How to Survive a Plague” rode a wave of festival acclaim to an Oscar nomination, journalist-turned-filmmaker David France probably didn’t imagine that a similarly titled quasi-sequel was in the cards. A superb overview of the early years of HIV-aids activism in the face of political indifference and ineptitude — ultimately leading to game-changing medication and pharmaceutical policy change — that film has given France a solid grounding for another feature-length study of very different if somewhat comparable global health crisis, centered on the Covid-19 pandemic and the extraordinarily accelerated scientific race for a solution.
Researched and assembled with his characteristic intelligence and thoroughness, “How to Survive a Pandemic” serves as both a valuable potted history of the last two years of medical tumult and relief, and a critical progress report marking work yet to be done. Hardly the first high-profile documentary on the pandemic, but...

From the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker David France (“How to Survive a Plague”) could sense the scale of the threat looming on the horizon. A long-time health reporter who has spent decades documenting the battle against HIV and AIDS, he also knew that it would be up to science to lead the world from the brink of an unprecedented human catastrophe.
The race to develop and rollout a Covid-19 vaccine has been the defining story of recent memory, and it was the director’s need to document “the great unseen work” performed in laboratories across the world that led to his latest feature, “How to Survive a Pandemic.” “This is the largest scientific undertaking of our lifetimes,” France tells Variety, “and it deserved to be chronicled.”

A new film about the development, regulation and roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines from “How to Survive a Plague” director David France has scored a raft of international sales.

Filming on the documentary, which is still untitled, began in April 2020 and wrapped in October. The project is now in post-production.
“Covid-19 has proved one of the most challenging and deadly diseases for vaccine scientists,” said France in a statement. “From the first effective vaccine to the current scramble to respond to an ever-changing virus, to their politically perilous efforts reaching patients in the far corners of the earth, we have been embedded in...

Adam Conover, creator and host of truTV’s Adam Ruins Everything, has teamed with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions to pull back the curtain on government in a new sketch comedy series for Netflix.
The streamer has ordered The G Word with Adam Conover, which will go inside the machine of government and introduce viewers to the civil servants who make it work. It will ask whether government is a dirty word or a trusted institution.
The comedy series, which will be mixed with documentary elements, will start production in early 2021.
The series is loosely inspired by Michael Lewis’ best-selling book The Fifth Risk, the rights to which the Obamas acquired back in 2018 as one of their first after setting up Higher Ground and their Netflix production deal.

Heather was a big fan of Overlord after having seen the movie at Fantastic Fest, so this is already on my radar to catch on opening night. That said, if you're still on the fence about it and want to see more, Paramount has released their latest (and final trailer) for the upcoming World War II-set horror movie.
Overlord was directed by Julius Avery and stars Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Pilou Asbæk, John Magaro, and Mathilde Ollivier. The screenplay was written by Billy Ray and Mark L. In this edition of Canon Of Film, we honor the release of ‘Ready Player One‘ by taking a look at Steven Spielberg‘s return to blockbuster filmmaking by exploring one of the director’s more recent forays into Science Fiction with ‘Minority Report‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Minority Report (2002)
Director: Steven Spielberg
Screenplay: Scott Frank and Jon Cohen based on the short story by Philip K. Dick
You hardly ever hear it brought up even among Steven Spielberg‘s best but it’s now abundantly clear that ‘Minority Report‘ is truly among his best films. I’m not quite sure why it took so long though. I’ve always regarded it that highly but it split some critics originally and was mostly shutout when it came to award season, only getting an Oscar nomination for the Sound Editing. I think the...

Jj Abrams is going from the worlds of Star Wars and Star Wars to, er, flamingos...
Whilst Jj Abrams has already journeyed through a universe of special effects of late, directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, producing Star Trek Beyond, and overseeing production of Star Wars: Episode VIII, animated features were alien to him. At least until now.
Abrams will be producing The Flamingo Affair, an animated comedy whose details are still mainly under wraps. What we do know is that there will definitely be flamingoes. Feathers are going to fly in the film, that follows a heist involving a tangle of long pink necks and longer pink legs.
Abrams will produce under his Bad Robot label, with Jon Cohen and Annie Laks overseeing for Paramount Animation. This newer branch of Paramount (which came into being after Dreamworks parted ways with the studio in 2012) is known so...

Saying that, TV’s Agent Carter provided us with a brilliant example of bringing a female comic book character to the small screen earlier this year, which hopefully Hollywood will learn a lot from going forward.
Of course, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel will be joining their respective cinematic universes soon, with Supergirl getting a pop at small screen success too. It looks like female comic book heroes will be getting the attention they deserve in the live action realm, finally.

TruTV seems to like pulling TV show ideas from popular web series. The cable channel has just ordered a pilot for Adam Ruins Everything (working title) from production studio Big Breakfast.
The new show stars comedian Adam Conover, who takes an honest yet comical look at topics most people take for granted. Backing his reporting with science and historical facts, the host will seek to reveal the truth about common misconceptions while he also entertains and informs audiences. A release for the show calls Conover “like that friend who knows a little bit too much about everything and is going to tell you about it whether you like it or not.”
TruTV’s Adam Ruins Everything was inspired by the titular web series initially created by Big Breakfast for CollegeHumor Originals. The first episode, “Why Engagement Rings Are a Scam,” has garnered over 5.6 million views on YouTube. Overall, the entire...

Near the beginning of his career, Tom Cruise was a hair’s breadth away from playing the lead in Terry Gilliam’s sci-fi classic, Brazil. Gilliam, casting around for a decent 20-something actor to play the lead role of Sam Lowry, saw Cruise in his breakthrough film, Risky Business, and was immediately impressed by the performance.

Warrior
Stars: Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Morrison, Frank Grillo | Written by Gavin O’Connor, Anthony Tambakis | Directed by Gavin O’Connor
The ultimate test of a fighter becomes the ultimate test for a family when ex-wrestler Tommy (Hardy) returns home for the first time in fourteen years to enlist the help of his estranged father (Nolte) to win a coveted Mixed Martial Arts tournament. By chance, Tommy’s fighter-turned-teacher brother Brendan (Edgerton) has also entered the tournament in a desperate bid to provide for his family and the stage is set for a climactic confrontation between the two brothers.
Critically acclaimed as the new Rocky, Warrior is just that. Taking the same basic traits as Stallone’s classic flick – the underdog battling against both himself, his situation and in the ring – the film blends the same facets of action and melodrama and updates it for the Mma generation.
