Could you describe the plot of the 2001 Julia Stiles movie "Save the Last Dance" while simultaneously performing Julia Stiles' final dance from the 2001 Julia Stiles movie "Save the Last Dance"? Not many people can answer "yes" to this questions, but one person who can is "Saturday Night Live" cast member Chloe Fineman, who did just that on this weekend's episode. She was even joined for the final portion of the dance by Julia Stiles herself, in a surprise cameo.
"Save the Last Dance" received mixed reviews when it was first released, and in the two decades since the "street ballet" dance that Stiles' character performs in her successful audition for Juilliard has become a recurring target of internet mockery. Still, whether you love, hate, or have never seen "Save the Last Dance," there's no denying that its $131.7 million box office gross helped reignite the Hollywood trend of dance movies. Without "Save the Last Dance,...

Julia Stiles was a surprise guest on Saturday Night Live showing up during Weekend Update for a collaboration with Chloe Fineman.
Colin Jost sets up the bit by announcing Fineman has some intimate gift ideas to share for that special someone in your life as the holidays are around the corner. To do so, strangely, Fineman needs demonstrate it from in front of the news desk.
“I only have one sexy gift idea and I kind of have to demonstrate it. The sexiest gift you can give your partner is to try something new in the bedroom,” she teased Jost and Michael Che.
Her gift was a reenactment of the final dance Stiles performs at the end of Save the Last Dance. Fineman is dressed in all black just as Sara (Stiles) did in the 2001 film directed by Thomas Carter and co-starring Sean Patrick Thomas.

Sean Patrick Small has long been aware of the similarities between him and Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird.
Growing up as a 6’4 kid who played basketball, he took on Bird’s number 33 shirt as he was trying to perfect his own jump shot.
While it’s not a big jump for HBO to cast him in the Adam McKay-exec produced series Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty as Magic Johnson’s rival – you just have to look at the pictures – the confluence of events that got him there is its own wild story.
Small transferred to USC after discovering a passion for acting and writing. “How can I try to combine these two things together in order to make my way? I’ve been told that I looked like Larry Bird, and I’m 6’4 and played basketball. Let’s see if this guy has a good enough story to write about,...

The Primetime Emmy Awards were unable to capitalize on its historic and diverse nomination fields, with all major acting trophies going to white actors.
Actors that were seen as solid contenders included Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez (“Pose”), the late Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”) — but in the end, all ended up empty-handed.
Michaela Coel, nominated for four Emmys, picked up the writing limited category for “I May Destroy You,” the third time a Black creative has won the category and first for a Black woman. Past Black winners have included David Mills (“The Corner”), Anthony Hemingway (“American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson”) and Stephen Williams and Christal Henry (“Watchmen”).
A record number of 49 non-Anglo creatives were recognized in the acting and reality competition categories. While many didn’t expect anyone to unseat Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), Jean Smart...

White men have long dominated the Directing For a Drama Series Emmy category. Female and Black helmers did not land first nominations until three decades after the category’s 1955 inception
This year, for the first time ever, the majority of drama directing nominations — four out of six (67%) — went to female/non-white helmers, Steven Canals for the finale of Pose, Julie Anne Robinson for the pilot of Bridgerton, Jessica Hobbs for The Crown and Liz Garbus for The Handmaid’s Tale.
The tidal change for female representation had been brewing. After five and a half decades of just a handful of nominated women altogether, with a single instance of more than one making the list (two in 1992), female drama directors have ramped up their showing in the past two decades. This marks the fourth time since 2010 that three of the nominees in the drama directing category are women.

Scott Marshall Smith, the screenwriter whose credits included the Robert De Niro films Men of Honor and The Score, has died, his family said Tuesday. He was 62.
Smith was finishing work on his latest movie, the psychological thriller Wasatch, when he suffered a stroke. No further details were provided.
Born in Monterey, CA, raised in the Midwest and a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Smith began his entertainment career working for commercial and music video director Bob Giraldi. He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue a writing career.
After a stint working at Panavision Hollywood, Smith saw his first script land at Fox 2000. It was Men of Honor, a biopic about Carl Brashear, the first African American Navy diver. Cuba Gooding Jr. played Brashear alongside De Niro, and George Tillman Jr. directed the film, which was released in 2000. His next screenplay became Paramount’s The Score,...

The 1990 Primetime Emmys ceremony didn’t have any sweeps, but a longtime TV favorite won an overdue award from an unlikely group of presenters, a record was set for the most ties in a single ceremony, a couple of legends were remembered and, despite Academy love being spread around, there were two shows that surprisingly ended the night with zero major wins. Hosted by the unlikely trio of Candice Bergen, Jay Leno and Jane Pauley, the 42nd Emmy Awards ceremony took place on September 16, 1990. Let’s flashback 30 years to the highlights.
Although “Cheers” had won Best Comedy Series three times, its lead actor failed to nab a trophy himself, despite being nominated seven straight years for the classic character. However, Ted Danson finally got his moment on the stage, winning for Best Comedy Actor for his role as Sam Malone on “Cheers.” He quipped, “I suppose this means you’ll be saying,...

One of the more outlandish subplots in Iron Man 3 saw President Matthew Ellis kidnapped by the Mandarin (who not to mention also obliterated Air Force One). Ellis was played by William Sadler, and though he briefly reprised the role in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., to date, Iron Man 3 his only movie appearance in the McU.
However, that single performance came close to becoming two. Sadler has disclosed that he almost made a surprising cameo as President Ellis in Ant-Man, but the scene didn’t make the final cut. This is what he told David Thompson and Thomas Carter on the Lights, Thunder, Action! podcast, saying:
“I actually shot a thing for Ant-Man. I shot a bit of President Matthew Ellis for Ant-Man but they decided to use a different President, I don’t know. It was pretty silly.”

Though it may seem like a slam-dunk for “Game of Thrones,” the Emmy race for Best Drama Directing could have an interesting spoiler in the mix: Adam McKay, who’s in the running this year for HBO’s new series “Succession.” The TV academy loves to heap accolades on A-list movie directors, especially ones who’ve been on a role as of late.
After making a name for himself with the absurdist comedies “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004) and “Step Brothers” (2008), McKay won critical acclaim and Oscar glory with the politically charged satires “The Big Short” (2015) and “Vice” (2018). The former brought him a win for screenwriting and a nomination for directing, while the latter earned him writing, directing and producing bids. Now he’s returned to television with this pertinent drama about a Rupert Murdoch-esque media mogul (Brian Cox) and his conniving family, for which he helmed the pilot.

The true-crime limited series “When They See Us” has received glowing reviews from critics, and because it premiered on May 31 on Netflix, the last day of Emmy eligibility, it has a chance to be honored by the television academy this summer too. But one race might be especially historic. Only five black women have ever been nominated for a Primetime Emmy for directing, but none have won. So if Ava DuVernay prevails this year for Best Movie/Mini Directing, it would be unprecedented.

Oh, the places Millie Bobby Brown will go. The breakout star of Stranger Things (returning Oct. 27) graces the subscriber cover of InStyle's November issue and reflects on her rapid rise to fame—all before she was even a teen. "You know, I'm just a 13-year-old like any other 13-year-old, so I just plan on living my life and take it step-by-step," Brown says matter-of-factly. "Hopefully, in five years' time I will be in college. No, let's say eight years...unless I get a really good movie. Then it's, 'See ya, college!'" Ha. But unlike some child stars, Brown is in no rush to grow up. For example, the young Brit currently works with stylist Thomas Carter Phillips (whose...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who is the best TV director? Why? (For old, current or upcoming shows.)
Marisa Roffman (@marisaroffman), TV Guide Magazine
The recent Emmy Awards was a good reminder of just how great television directors are right now. It was the best overall crop we’ve had in years, and one of the few categories where it felt like it could have gone any way.
But in terms of best television director, I’m partial to David Nutter. His 30-plus year resume is impressive (“The Sopranos,” “ER,” “The X-Files,” plus an Emmy win for “Game of Thrones”) and wildly varied (he’s done procedurals like “Without a Trace,...

Thanks to new rules, this year’s Academy Board of Governors race was more intense than usual. The Academy’s 17 branches each has three governors on the board; they can serve three consecutive three-year terms. One seat is up for reelection every year. The Board of Governors actually runs the show at the Academy, determining the strategy and mission, and keeping tabs on its financial health.
(The full list of Governors is here.)
This year, the race was opened up to allow any of the 6200-plus Academy members to run for the board. Before, the membership voted for 50% of a nominating committee that selected candidates to present to the Board. This yielded the same favorites over and over again.
Now, members of each branch can pick their own contenders. Academy CEO Dawn Hudson clearly sees the benefit of a more diverse board of Governors. In an email to members announcing...

"This is how I heard about the boy, Kunta Kinte," Alex Haley (Laurence Fishburne) tells us in the opening moments of History's new miniseries Roots. "And this is how I'll tell you the story." The importance of stories, and the way that we tell them, form the heart of the new Roots, which debuts Monday night at 9 (the eight-hour project will air over four straight nights, simulcast on History, A&E, and Lifetime). From the time we meet Kunta (Malachi Kirby) as a young man abducted from his home in Juffure, Gambia by slavers, until we leave his descendants over 100 years later in the post-Civil War American South, Roots prizes the power of stories and tradition, from how Kunta's Uncle Silla (Derek Luke) teaches him the ways of the Mandinka warrior, to how Kunta's grandson Chicken George (Rege-Jean Page) will tell his own offspring stories about the grandfather he never met,...

The retired neurosurgeon, whose personal charisma could generously be likened to that of a hung-over Dmv agent, was determined not to throw away his shot. He raised both of his arms in front of him, turned his palms to the country, and unleashed his signature drawl:
"Several years ago, a movie was made about these hands.

With ABC's hugely lauded 1977 adaptation of Roots officially ranking as the third most-watched TV event of all time, it's a brave team that would attempt a remake. That's precisely what's about to happen, however: A&E Networks have just announced a new four-episode / eight-hour version of Alex Haley's novel, of which Philip Noyce and Thomas Carter will direct an episode each (the two further directors have yet to be announced).Haley's Roots: The Saga Of An American Family was first published in 1976, and, along with the TV version, became a cultural phenomenon. It involves the Gambian Kunta Kinte, sold into slavery in 1767, and his multiple generations of descendents throughout the following 200 years, each of whom passes on an oral history of their ancestor. Later chapters of the book became a further TV series, Roots: The Next Generation, in 1979.Noyce (Clear And Present Danger, Salt) will direct the first episode,...

Chicago – “When The Game Stands Tall” has more sermons than a month of Sundays. Its heart is in the right place, but it’s more likely to put its audience to sleep than bring it to its feet. By now the tropes of the inspirational sports drama have become as familiar as the West Coast Offense, but this film can’t effectively figure out how to execute them.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The drama itself has the bones of a good story. A high school football team amasses the longest winning streak in sports history, and then has its true character tested when that streak is broken. “Passion Of The Christ” star Jim Caviezel is playing a slightly worldlier messiah here – he plays football coach Bob Ladouceur with a calm demeanor that borders on comatose. Caviezel’s coach doesn’t yell or scream at his players, but he stalks the field relentlessly, and...

Many of the greatest sports films all have one thing in common: they aren't just about sports. When the Game Stands Tall is a movie based on a true story that chronicles what happens when a high school football team loses its 151 winning streak. The gripping football sequences coupled with emotional layers in the film make this movie more than just a simple underdog sports film. Under the watchful eyes of Coaches Bob Ladouceur and Terry Eidson, the players concentrate on making the perfect effort and becoming men of character.
"I wasn't interested in making a movie just about football," says director Thomas Carter. "The whole thing that attracted me and what De La Salle's program is about is who are these kids are going to be as young men when they come out of the program. What values and sense of personal responsibility are they going to have? Those...

Contrary to what the bright stadium lights and flashes of pigskin would indicate, When the Game Stands Tall is not a movie about football. Yes, the film is centered on a team of gridiron giants, the De La Salle Spartans, and the coach that led them on a remarkable 151 game winning streak. But as protagonist Bob Ladouceur makes clear early and often in the film, When the Game Stands Tall doesn’t care about a scoreboard. “Getting these wins is nothing. Teaching these boys there’s more to life is hard,” he tells a reporter during the prologue, as he marches his team onto the field for win number 151, which crowns their 2003 season with a championship.
But, come on: no sports movie is really just about the sport, right? The game is just a metaphor for overcoming adversity, the triumph of the human spirit, etc., etc. Thing is, When the Game Stands Tall...

Here's an entirely fair-to-reveal, non-spoilery spoiler for the new football hagiography “When the Game Stands Tall”: It's a crypto-Christian movie. Like “Mom's Night Out,” there's no mention of “When the Game“‘s faith-iness in the trailer or other mainstream promotional material, so the studio is gambling that audiences won't feel deceived that a sermon has been Trojan-Horsed into their earnestly inspirational sports drama, and that those unsuspecting viewers might even appreciate the film's obvious love of God and game. If only there was much else to appreciate about “Coach Carter” and “Save the Last Dance” director Thomas Carter‘s shapeless,...

Jim Caviezel stars as coach Bob Ladoucer in the true football story directed by Thomas Carter (Coach Carter, Save the Last Dance).

Between 1992 and 2003, De La Salle High School had an unheard of winning streak of 151 games and not one single loss. The team was riding high on a wave of victory, with Coach Bob Ladouceur and Assistant Coach Terry Eidson steering the ship through the waters of history. Unfortunately, all good streaks come to an end, and end it did. This loss tore apart a town, and inspired everything from familial abuse to a shooting death of one of the players to Ladouceur suffering a heart attack. At least, this is what the trailer to the film about the events (recently released on Yahoo) would have you believe. Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, Person of Interest) is playing the role of Coach Ladouceur, with Michael Chiklis (Fantastic Four, Eagle Eye) backing him up as Assistant Coach Eidson, and Thomas Carter (who's covered high school sports at the movies before...

Just in time to be couple with Kevin Costner's return to sports drama in Draft Day this weekend, we have the trailer for When the Game Stands Tall, a typical underdog sports drama inspired by a true story. In this one, Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ, "Person of Interest") coaches an unknown high school football team and leads them to an unprecedented winning streak. But the unique angle comes from the fact that the story seems to really begin after the winning streak is over. Still, it looks like exactly what you would expect from a film like this, and it's a wonder we haven't seen a whole film parodying the cliches of these kind of cliche sports dramas. Anyway, plenty of football fans will probably still like this one. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Thomas Carter's When the Game Stands Tall, originally from Yahoo: When...
