Former President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at the White House state dinner on Thursday. The list of distinguished guests included former President and First Lady Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, actor LeVar Burton, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and more. Around 500 people attended the event on the White House’s South Lawn.
The White House welcomed Kenyan President William Ruto and first lady Rachel Ruto. Other notable Kenyan figures attended, as did the Rutos’ three daughters. President Joe Biden honored the Rutos in his toast and quoted former President Jimmy Carter‘s 1980 speech when another Kenyan president was invited to the White House.
“Neighbors do not share a border but share beliefs,” Biden said. Biden’s speech honored the alliance between the United States and Kenya. A state dinner is one of the most significant ways a president can acknowledge the importance of a foreign power.

Exclusive: Buffalo 8 has acquired worldwide rights out of Cannes to The President and the Dragon, a Jimmy Carter documentary from Sudanese writer, director and producer Waleed Eltayeb and Irish director-cinematographer Ian D. Murphy.
The film watches as the former U.S. President, a motley crew of public health veterans, ex-child soldiers, and local volunteers traverse political minefields, treacherous terrain, and bloody civil war to chase after an ancient parasite, uniting with the goal of eradicating Guinea worm disease. Produced by Touchline’s Shaun McGuckian and Eltayeb, and co-produced by Brave Road’s Andrew Bishop (ESPN’s 26.2 To Life) and Tim Byron Owen (The Matchstick Man), the film is a testament and dedication to all the Guinea worm warriors and those working on the frontlines to end the suffering caused by the horrific, water-borne disease.

Even by his extreme rhetorical standard, Donald Trump has ramped up his criticism of his opponent, Joe Biden in recent weeks. Trump recently declared that Jimmy Carter’s presidency was “brilliant” in comparison to Biden‘s, calling him, for good measure, the “worst president” in American history.
While speaking to reporters outside a bodega in Harlem, New York, where a clerk stabbed an ex-convict in self-defense in 2022, Trump shared these remarks.
“Biden is the worst president in the history of our country,” Trump said. He went on to say that Biden is “worse than Jimmy Carter by a long shot.”
Trump suggested that Carter would perceive his presidency positively when considering the current president’s performance.
Days before Trump paid tribute to Carter’s late wife, Rosalynn Carter, he made similar remarks about Biden and Carter during a rally in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on November 18, 2023.
“[Biden is] incompetent,” he said at the time.

“How many of you had ‘Mark Hamill will lead the press briefing’ on your bingo cards?” the Star Wars icon joked as he took the podium at the White House. “Yeah, me either.”
It’s not such a far-fetched idea, however, when one considers the date. It’s May 3, the last weekday before that sacred Star Wars holiday, May the Fourth. Also, anyone who follows the quick-witted Hamill on social media knows he’s a staunch Democrat.
For his support, Hamill got to meet with Biden before the press briefing and, while Hamill noted that he had visited the White House during the terms of both Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama, “I never was invited into the Oval Office.”
Sounds like he finally checked that one off his bucket list.

In Jay Roach's 1997 James Bond spoof "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," the film's villain, Dr. Evil (Mike Myers), aims to murder off his arch-nemesis by dropping him into a tank full of man-eating sharks. In a supervillainous twist, the sharks will be equipped with laser beams affixed to their heads. Dr. Evil says he likes his pets to have a well-cooked meal before eating. He then cackles maniacally. A lieutenant of his, however, informs Dr. Evil that buying sharks equipped with lasers is immensely difficult and that the tank is, instead, filled with flesh-eating sea bass. Dr. Evil isn't thrilled. "You know, I have one simple request," Dr. Evil says, "and that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!"
One cannot say if there's a direct connection to the above scene and a James Bond movie that Sean Connery once wrote, but there are a few uncanny similarities.

John Oliver dedicated his latest episode of Last Week Tonight to UFOs and started talking about the topic, making a crazy joke about Hugh Jackman.
“Our main story tonight concerns UFOs,” Oliver said on the HBO late-night show. “They brought us great album art, classic movie moments, and, of course, Hugh Jackman. I can’t prove it yet, but I’m close.”
Oliver then said Kesha, Russell Crowe, and Jimmy Carter have claimed they’ve seen UFOs. The comedian went on to open dialogue to the history of sightings in the sky that sometimes have simple explanations.
“There clearly should be room for sober assessment of UFO sightings,” Oliver said later on in the show. “I will acknowledge that when you do that, the answers you get can sometimes end up being less fun.”
Oliver was talking about an alleged UFO sighting through a night vision recording that was thought to actually be commercial drones.

President Jimmy Carter was asked to pick his favorite Beatles song, and he chose a song from John Lennon’s solo career. The former president discussed how much the tune in question affected audiences around the globe. John once said some listeners didn’t understand the tune’s message.
President Jimmy Carter likes a John Lennon song that’s against nationalism
During a 2007 interview with The News–Times, Carter was asked to name his favorite Beatles song. The song in question was not actually a Beatles tune, but it fits in with the band’s hippie image. “My favorite is ‘Imagine,'” he said. “When I go to a strange country, Cuba and other places, in some of those nations, ‘Imagine’ has become a national anthem. If you go to Havana, for instance, you’ll see a statue of John Lennon.” Carter was referring to Lennon Park in Cuba.

Joy Behar was so delighted with Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel’s instant-classic Trump slam – “Isn’t it past your jail time” – during Sunday’s awards show that she immediately dashed off a congratulatory email…to Jimmy Fallon.
On The View today, co-host Behar said, “I thought that Jimmy Kimmel’s joke about ‘Isn’t it past your jail time’ was so spot-on and the fact that Trump was on his Truth Social or whatever writing all this stuff…Well, I know Jimmy, so I decided I’d write him an email to congratulate him on taking on this fascist with a joke, because comedians rule.
“But I sent it to Jimmy Fallon.”
For the record, Fallon didn’t respond.
While View moderator Whoopi Goldberg commiserated – “I don’t think there’s anybody sitting at this table who has never sent the wrong email to the wrong person” – Behar seemed unassuaged.

The whole idea of this Netflix Original documentary was to bring up old stories and make the current millennial understand the kind of incidents that took place in America decades ago. This is Netflix foraying into the political documentary genre and bringing back to life a case that was speculated about when it broke decades ago. This was the year 1991, when freelance journalist Daniel Casolaro was found dead in a hotel bathtub. Though the police dubbed it suicide, the deceased’s family, friends, and acquaintances were sure he would never take his life.
Daniel’s untimely death opened Pandora’s box thirty years ago, and there was lots of speculation regarding the story he was working on. It was revealed the man was working on something huge that could potentially bring down the American government at the time. There was never any confirmation from either the media or the government on what happened,...

“The Sadness Will Last Forever”: The life of wrestler Kevin Von Erich could probably be described by the iconic final words of Vincent Van Gogh. Sean Darkin’s Von Erich biopic, titled The Iron Claw, is the depiction of that story, which is inarguably one of the saddest possible ones to grace cinema in recent years. My head still hurts thanks to the amount of tears the movie made me shed during its final ten minutes, which only indicates that Darkin has nailed it—and so has the cast, led by an impeccable Zac Efron as Kevin, in his career-best performance. We’re going to dissect, discuss, and attempt to find the answer to the biggest question this movie floats, regarding the existence of a curse in the ill-fated Texas-based family, and hopefully find some solace by the end of the article.

Troy, Michigan, is quintessential suburbia: strip malls, banks with drive-thrus, and jewelry stores. Though just 30 minutes outside of Detroit, Troy feels a world away from the Motor City, with its blocks of boarded-up houses and abandoned stores. The disparate environments speak to the systemic inequality that brought me here to talk politics and the bind that Joe Biden has gotten himself into.

Gladiators, pain freaks, brutes, clowns, true athletes, fake competitors: The slab-of-meat stars of professional wrestling are all those things. And back in the 1980s, when wrestling was reaching its cultural zenith, it almost looked as if you could divide the world between those who took wrestling on the level and those who dismissed it as a vulgar, over-the-top bad joke.
Yet it was never that simple. Even if you saw through the put-on nature of wrestling, you could still get off on the theater of it as cartoon spectacle. And a great many hard-core wrestling fans were actually in on the joke. They knew, on some level, that they were watching staged antics, yet that didn’t keep them from experiencing it all as “real.” If you’re wondering how that kind of cognitive dissonance works, welcome to the America that pro wrestling helped to usher in — an America in which Donald Trump,...

Rosalynn Carter was a first lady “who saw her role as going well beyond the essential, warm and welcoming host to being a close and trusted, yes, adviser” to her husband Jimmy Carter, PBS NewsHour senior correspondent Judy Woodruff recalled on Tuesday.

SAG-AFTRA has released the full 128-page contract that ended the actors strike on Nov. 8, with union leaders urging members to vote yes on the deal by the Dec. 5 ratification deadline.
The hard-fought tentative agreement was sealed after a 118-day strike, which marked the union’s the longest-ever widespread work stoppage and its first since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. The deal ultimately wrangled by SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher and Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, national executive director and chief negotiator, has been widely praised as groundbreaking. But the terms around generative artificial intelligence have generated some debate, with some prominent members vowing to vote down the contract because the long-term AI protections don’t go far enough to protect jobs, in their view.
Still, after the sacrifice of a long strike that dovetailed in part with the 148-day Writers Guild of America walkout, the potential for a majority of SAG-AFTRA members...

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-mn), who represents a suburban Minneapolis congressional district, launched a challenge to President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination.
His announcement has been expected for weeks, as Phillips, 54, warns that Biden’s age and low approval mean that he very likely may lose to Donald Trump next year. Trump has a wide lead against the GOP field.
In an interview with CBS News’ Robert Costa on CBS Mornings, Phillips said that he thinks Biden has “done a spectacular job for our country, but it is not about the past. This is an election about the future.”
“I will not sit still, I will not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we going to be facing an emergency next November,” he said.
In the interview and in his campaign video, Phillips said that now was the time to “pass the torch” to a new generation.

The following is a statement from The Elders, a group of independent global leaders working for peace, justice and human rights, founded by Nelson Mandela and chaired by Mary Robinson:
“The Elders condemn the horrendous terror attacks launched by Hamas on 7 October 2023, the killing of innocent civilians, the holding of hostages and the continued indiscriminate missile attacks on Israel. These are mass atrocities for which the perpetrators must be brought to justice, preferably in a court of law.
“We also condemn the Israeli government’s unacceptable collective punishment of the population of Gaza through siege, the scale of the military assault and its death toll, and the forcible transfer of civilians within the territory, as well as the continuing land and home incursions and demolitions in the West Bank and settler violence against Palestinian communities. As the Hollywood strikes stretched to Week 23, optimism is high that a deal between signatories and SAG-AFTRA is close and the town can go back to work. That enthusiasm could be felt with all the deal stories that Deadline broke this week, a clear signal of hope.
Not so fast, says Deadline Strike Talk host Billy Ray. Citing examples that range from director Ted Kotcheff changing the death of John Rambo in First Blood to Jackie Robinson retiring rather than the lifelong Dodger accepting a deal to play for the Giants and all that Jimmy Carter accomplished post-White House, Ray implores SAG-AFTRA to remember it isn’t who drew first blood but who sticks the landing. And for actors, that means safeguards against AI.

Iranian human rights advocate and freedom fighter Narges Mohammadi has won the Nobel Peace Prize 2023, organizers of the award said Friday.
The Norwegian Nobel committee that awards the prize lauded Mohammadi for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”
It highlighted: “Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.” Mohammadi is still in prison.
The prize also “recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women,” the committee noted.
Iran has also been in focus for various Hollywood stars. For example, early this year, Cate Blanchett, Jason Momoa, Samuel L. Jackson, Jada Pinkett Smith and Bryan Cranston were among members of the entertainment industry publicly supporting calls to end Iran‘s execution of protestors,...

Arguably the season’s best strategist, she came in second place behind Gabriel Cannon, whose finale challenge win gave him the power to decide the order of the final Guess-Offs, setting the stage for his win. While Jerrica proved to have the best pop culture knowledge of the cast, she was one of the many who fell victim to the Elton John theory. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Claim to Fame Season 2 Episode 7.] The Claim to Fame cast was brought to tears when Hugo’s celebrity relative was revealed in Episode 7. It wasn’t Hugo’s elimination that got them teary-eyed, but rather his claim to fame’s contributions to American history. As we predicted early on, Hugo’s celebrity relative is President Jimmy Carter, his maternal grandfather. As revealed at the end of the episode, his mother is Amy Carter, the 39th president’s only daughter. She grew up in the White House when her father was Commander in Chief from 1977 to 1981, and Hugo calls him “Papa.” Hugo (last name Wentzel) was eliminated when he incorrectly guessed that Chris is related to Elton John, marking the second time someone has been sent home for making an incorrect guess about his famous family member’s identity. When the final scene of the third season of Dallas was shown on March 21, 1980, it spawned a frenzy the likes that television still hasn’t seen in the 43 years since then. Because that’s when we saw the character of J.R. Ewing take a couple of bullets, with the episode ending on a double cliffhanger: 1) Did J.R. survive? and 2) Who did it? The “Who Shot J.R.?” controversy enthralled America for the next eight months, until the shooter was revealed. Coincidentally, that long wait happened at the same time the presidential campaign between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter was going on, and when the mystery was solved, more Americans (83 million) watched the broadcast than voted in the election. When we spoke to the late Larry Hagman, he once told us about how he unwittingly became part of that election.(Click on the media bar below to hear Larry Hagman) https://www.

Buckle up for a busy 72 hours.
SAG-AFTRA’s already-extended contract talks will come to a head one way or another by the July 12 midnight Pt expiration deadline. And as goes SAG-AFTRA’s negotiations with the major studios and streamers goes the rest of Hollywood’s year.
By multiple accounts, progress in the negotiating room has been negligible since SAG-AFTRA granted a 12-day extension of talks hours before the contract expired June 30. The mood across town is grim with the expectation that Hollywood will soon endure its first “double strike” in more than 60 years. The Writers Guild of America, which has been on strike since May 2, stands ready to help SAG-AFTRA execute its first industry-wide work stoppage since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. SAG-AFTRA’s move would bring a burst of energy to the WGA’s public efforts at a time when union members privately acknowledge that strike fatigue is setting in.
