No lie: Peacock is ordering a second season of Based on a True Story.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has picked up the series, a comedic thriller from UCP and starring Kaley Cuoco (who also executive produces) and Chris Messina. The first season debuted in June and earned mostly favorable reviews; detailed viewing data is, per usual with streamers, not public, but the series did land in Nielsen’s top 10 rankings for the week of its premiere.
Based on a True Story is, in fact, based on (or at least partly inspired by) a true story, while also satirizing true crime tropes. The series stars Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who cross paths with an infamous serial killer in Los Angeles. Ava, a true crime obsessive, hits on the idea of making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their rut.

Playing a man who gets entangled in a murder investigation because his wife (Kaley Cuoco) is obsessed with true crime, “Based on a True Story” kind of hits close to home for Chris Messina. When he was a kid, he and a friend actually may have actually discovered a crime scene.
“I grew up in Northport, Long Island,” Messina told Variety at the Peacock series’ premiere Thursday at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. “I grew up on Makamah Road, about a block from the Long Island Sound. A buddy and I walked to the Sound and – it was very ‘Stand By Me’ – we found a hand that washed up on the beach.”
They immediately called the cops. “We had to report it,” Messina recalled. “I was pretending to be River Phoenix in ‘Stand By Me.’”

Casting directors who came to celebrate their own at the 38th annual Artios Awards on Thursday had a message for actors who worry that making a self-tape means sending one’s work into the abyss: They do take the time to see your at-home audition.
Casting Society President Destiny Lilly told Deadline that she recognizes that some actors probably think those self-tapes that were made during the pandemic ended up in some massive, unopened pile of manila folders. And that couldn’t be anything further from the truth, she said.

January Jones is joining the debate over self-tape audition practices in Hollywood.

To audition actors in person,” Jones wrote on Instagram (via Variety). “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic.”
She continued, “I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes. Pent-up frustration by actors over the way audition process has evolved — or devolved — during the pandemic erupted this week when actors Ever Carradine, Merrin Dungey and Sprague Grayden slammed an ad by Betty Mae Casting offering paid self-taping services for non-Betty Mae projects. Their comments launched a heated discussion about the wide use of self-tapes, which have replaced the vast majority of in-person auditions over the last three years.
Because the conversation was triggered by the ad from Betty Mae, the company of well known casting director Mary Vernieu, with SAG-AFTRA calling casting offices charging for audition tapes “an optical and ethical disaster,” the society of Hollywood casting directors have found themselves in the eye of the storm.

Exclusive: After several actresses expressed frustration on Twitter this week about the cost of self-tape auditions, SAG-AFTRA weighed in Friday lambasting casting offices for cashing in on the process by offering rental facilities for actors.

Updated: Several actresses like Ever Carradine (The Handmaid’s Tale), Merrin Dungey (Big Little Lies) and Sprague Grayden (Hightown) turned to Twitter this week to express frustration over the pandemic-era trend of (costly) tape auditions and whether in-person tryouts are truly a thing of the past.
Carradine began her social media rant by noting how an ad popped up on her Instagram account for a “respected casting director’s office offering self tape opportunities for a fee. If we can go to casting and tape, can’t we just go to casting and actually read without paying $50 an audition?”
When someone asked if actors now have to pay for an audition, Carradine replied, “No, but you have to pay a facility to tape and read with you. In the before covid times, this was a last resort and most auditions happened in person in the room with casting, producers and the director.

Five seasons into its run, "The Handmaid's Tale" has now outpaced both the book on which it's based and the presidency it was so aptly born into. Now, the show is finally set to end with its sixth season, which will close the book on some of its central stories while others could still continue on in a sequel saga that's already been greenlit, titled "The Testaments."
If you've made it this far into "The Handmaid's Tale," you know that the world of Gilead is probably too bleak and morally shady to get a straightforward happy ending, but that still won't stop fans from wondering about exactly how the story of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) will come to a close. The fifth season ended on an intriguing note in November, with a plot that has June and her baby separated from everyone she knows — except her former tormenter Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) and her own baby.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Episode 10.
Season five’s tagline was “Some sins can’t be washed away”, but it could have been the words June delivered in this finale: “America wasn’t Gilead until it was, and then it was too fucking late.” That was this season’s warning, and its justification for telling a story so bleak that our hero just got chased out of the sanctuary, and away from the husband, she’d spent four seasons striving to reach.
If this show wasn’t making such a valid and timely protest with June’s storyline, it’d be pure sadism by this point. June’s more than earned a happy ending, but the potential of using her character to dramatize the asylum experience was too great to let her rest yet. Thus, the Handmaid’s tale becomes the refugee’s tale; June’s story...

[The story contains spoilers from the ninth episode of season five of The Handmaid’s Tale.]
Bradley Whitford recalls a key tip he received when directing his first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The script is often lying, he was told by creator and showrunner Bruce Miller. And as a director, it was his job to tell the truth.
For his first episode behind the camera — the ninth episode and penultimate hour of season five, “Allegiance” — the actor who plays Gilead Commander Lawrence was tasked with seeking out the truth about his own character. For the past couple episodes, Lawrence has been trying to convince June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) to return to Gilead — the oppressive regime and country she escaped — and live in New Bethlehem, a modernized, liberal island settlement where refugees can return with amnesty and reunite with lost family and friends. A step in the right direction, he says, to help redeem himself...

To stay in business over a long time, a series has to evolve. I understand that. But reinvention is tricky and in the search for more road, a series can also lose its way. The Handmaid’s Tale is not the taut, menacing thriller it once was.
In truth, I’m not sure it has any politics anymore. Men like Commander Lawrence, Gilead’s main architect, are allowed to take a hero’s turn, however slight, while women are reduced to hysterical rage. June, Serena, Mrs Wheeler, and Rita, who last week told June that she would return to Gilead if it meant she could see her son again. This week, its the Canadians who attend the grand opening of Gilead’s Toronto fertility centre. On The Handmaid’s Tale, women are increasingly led by their wombs.

“In Gilead, self-control was the essential survival skill,” reads Bruce Miller’s script for the Season 4 finale of The Handmaid’s Tale. “June’s an expert,” adds the details, which comes from the episode, which is titled “The Wilderness” and launched on Hulu on June 15.

After winning the Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy for three orphaned Season 2 episodes last year, Bradley Whitford made the switch to the supporting category for the third installment of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” with fruitful results. The actor bagged his first three career nominations in this very category for “The West Wing” (2001-03) – triumphing on his first try – which he succeeded with a pair of Best Comedy Guest Actor bids for “Transparent” (2015-16), again winning on the first bid. On his seventh citation, the three-time champ seeks to be blessed with his fourth victory by virtue of his work in his episode submission “Sacrifice,” the season’s 12th and penultimate outing.

Another live-action Marvel series bites the dust. Hulu has announced that Marvel's Runaways TV show won't have a fourth season. Season three, comprised of 10 episodes, will end the series and be released on Friday, December 13th. Hopefully, it won't leave fans of the show with a cliffhanger.
Marvel's Cloak & Dagger series was recently cancelled on Freeform after two seasons. The main characters from that show, Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph), will have their final appearance on Runaways in a crossover event.

It's time to say goodbye to Marvel's Runaways.
Hulu has announced the superhero drama will wrap with it's upcoming third season, which will span ten episodes.
"In an action-packed Season 3, the Runaways frantically search for their captured friends Chase, Gert, and Karolina," reads the official logline.
"The kids go head to head with an unstoppable enemy who has targeted Leslie — or more accurately, the child she’s carrying."
"Nico draws them all into a dark realm where its ruler Morgan le Fay, played by Elizabeth Hurley, is much more nefarious than anyone the kids have yet to face."
The series stars Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, Annie Wersching, Ryan Sands, Angel Parker, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Kevin Weisman, Brigid Brannagh, James Yaegashi, Brittany Ishibashi, and Elizabeth Hurley.

Hulu has good news and bad news for all you “Marvel’s Runaways” fans. The good: The Season 3 trailer finally dropped on Monday. The bad: The video revealed the upcoming episodes, which will be released on Dec. 13, will be the show’s last.
An individual with knowledge of the streaming service’s decision to end the Marvel series says that creatively, the series had “come to a natural ending point” and that Hulu felt this was “the right way and time” to complete the Runaways’ journey.

The live-action Marvel series “Runaways” is ending with its upcoming season on Hulu, Variety has learned.
The show, which is based on the Marvel comics series of the same name, is set to debut its third season on Dec. 13. That season will now serve as the show’s finale. According to an individual close to the series, the creative team felt that the third season provided a natural ending point for the show.
It is worth nothing, however, that “Runaways” was one of the few remaining live-action shows under the Marvel Television umbrella as set up by Jeph Loeb. With the end of “Runaways,” the only remaining live-action shows under Loeb’s purview are “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” which will end with its upcoming seventh season on ABC, and “Helstrom,” another Hulu series that recently set its main cast. All the rest of the Loeb-produced Marvel shows,...

The upcoming third season of Marvel’s Runaways will be its last. The 10-episode third season of the Hulu series premieres Dec. 13.
Marvel’s Runaways fans should not be alarmed that the drama would end abruptly with no closure — the story is said to come to a natural ending point at the end of Season 3.

I’m pretty stoked for the upcoming third season of Marvel’s Runaways. This has been a fun show to watch and the next season is going to get a lot more interesting with the arrival of the character Morgan le Fay played by Elizabeth Hurley, as well as the crossover with Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger.

Hulu is staging a superhero team-up of epic proportions.
It has been announced that the Runaways will be getting some assistance from Cloak & Dagger's Tandy and Tyrone during the upcoming third season of the hit series.
“You’ve all been asking for this and we’ve heard you loud and clear. So we made it happen,” the Runaways cast revealed in the video below, confirming the news.
It's unclear how the different groups will cross paths, but still, this is great news for fans of both Marvel dramas, especially given that Cloak & Dagger has yet to be renewed for a third season.
The show experienced a big dip in the ratings, with the sophomore run averaging around 355k viewers and 0.12 rating in the demo.

Hulu has released a teaser trailer for Marvel’s third season of The Runaways, and they’ve announced that the series will premiere on December 13th!
I’ve really enjoyed what Marvel has done with this series. I’ve enjoyed the characters they’ve brought to life and the story that is being told with them. I have no idea how long this show will last, but I’m glad that it’s getting at least one more season. I can’t wait to see how this story will play out.
Season 3 will consist of ten new episodes and the teaser features a bloodied and beaten down Runaways team. This is the synopsis that was shared for Season 3:
