2024 is half over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 10 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.
Late Night with the Devil (AMC+ & Prime Video Add-On)
Late Night with the Devil is a supernatural horror film written and directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes. The 2024 film is set in 1977 and it follows the story of Jack Delroy, a talk show host on Night Owl which was watched by the insomniacs all around the country.

Okay, we know that Cannes is the big thing at the moment and that everyone’s waiting for the premiere of Furiosa next week, but if you don’t know what to do in between, we might just have a very interesting proposal for all of you horror fans out there. The queer psychological horror I Saw the TV Glow was quietly released in theaters last Friday, after having its premiere at Sundance in January and after its limited release on May 3. Distributed by A24, the movie might not become a box office record-breaker, but it seems that the critics love it, and that might motivate people to go see the movie.
The movie is based on an original screenplay by Jane Schoenbrun, who also directed the movie. The non-binary filmmaker is best known for their earlier horror We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, which was also an indie...

The new "Doctor Who" season's second installment, "The Devil's Chord," is the closest the show's come to a proper musical episode. Sure, there was that brief musical number in the latest Christmas episode, and that one song-based resolution in season 7, but we've never seen the show embrace the music quite like this one. There are multiple original numbers, including a battle where the villain's using floating notations like a cowboy swinging a lasso around. It's fun when "Doctor Who" goes full weird, and this episode is an exciting promise of more musical weirdness to come.
But judging the episode by proper musical standards, how does it hold up? Well, not great. There's the problem that "There's Always a Twist At the End" is the only genuine catchy banger in the bunch, but more importantly, we never really got to hear the Doctor and Ruby sing about anything that matters. Sure,...

Writer/Director Jane Schoenbrun’s feature debut, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, captured the isolating nature of online culture via creepypasta horror through non-narrative, visual storytelling. Schoenbrun continues that core theme of dysphoria in their sophomore effort, I Saw the TV Glow, now armed with a bigger budget that allows the filmmaker to get even more personal while evolving their voice and visual style to an intoxicating degree. I Saw the TV Glow offers a layered and authentic portrait of identity, wrapped in ’90s nostalgia and surreal imagery that embeds itself deep into your psyche.
I Saw the TV Glow charts the life of Owen (Justice Smith) over multiple decades, initially introduced as an early teen (Ian Foreman) in 1996. Owen is a dysphoric and friendless outcast until he bumps into a slightly older student and fellow outcast, Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), at his high school. The pair quickly bond...

A24 and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair director Jane Schoenbrun have teamed up for a new horror movie called I Saw the TV Glow, which JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (you can read his 5/10 review at This Link). Yesterday, A24 took to social media to unveil a poster for the film, and to promise that a trailer would be online today. True to their word, they have already dropped the trailer online, and you can check it out in the embed above! I Saw the TV Glow is scheduled to reach theatres on May 3rd.
Written and directed by Schoenbrun, I Saw the TV Glow tells the story of two teenage outcasts who bond over their shared love of a scary television show. However, the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled.

Fresh off the haunting and singularly creepy indie We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, Jane Schoenbrun is back with A24‘s I Saw the TV Glow, releasing only in theaters May 3.
Headed to the SXSW Film Festival next month, I Saw the TV Glow first earned rave reviews out of Sundance, and several of them are featured in the film’s must-see official trailer.
In a world where too many people seem to be following trends and doing what everyone else is doing, Jane Schoenbrun is undoubtedly a true original. That was clear from We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. And it’s crystal clear watching the trailer for I Saw the TV Glow.
Watch the eerily seductive trailer for I Saw the TV Glow down below, which hails A24’s latest as “a one-of-a-kind masterpiece” and “one of the most original films of this decade.”

One of my favorite "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" characters is Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield), the Vengeance Demon turned human. She's introduced as the villain of the season 3 episode "The Wish," in which Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) wishes for a world where Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) never came to Sunnydale. When Anya makes Cordelia's wish come true, vampires end up ruling the town in the Slayer's absence.
Restoring the proper timeline robbed Anya of her powers; she's stuck as just another teenager attending Sunnydale High (and flunking math). Initially resentful of her new life, she eventually falls for Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and by season 4, she's part of the Scooby gang, sharing duties with her boyfriend as the show's comic relief.
Anya is hilarious; much of the humor in "Buffy" is sardonic, but she's oblivious. Having spent centuries as a vengeance demon, modern socialization skills escape her. Anya can be just as cutting or rude as the others,...

Legendary country star Dolly Parton was an uncredited executive producer on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, as the show came from her production company Sandollar Productions, which she co-founded with her former manager, Sandy Gallin. So if there’s anyone who should have an idea of what’s going on with the Buffy reboot that was announced some years back, it’s Dolly – and she said it’s still in the works.
Five and a half years have gone by since it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original”. One of the great things about the old broadcast TV model, in which seasons stretched to 20+ episodes, mere months separated one season from the next, and production schedules were thus unforgivingly demanding, was that producers always had an insatiable need for new talent. Filming 22 consecutive 42-minute episodes over the course of a few months? Your principals aren't going to be enough to cover all the ground your story will invariably traverse, and besides, they wouldn't have the time or energy even if you asked.
The solution to this problem? Guest stars!
Series from this golden age of television, from sitcoms like "Friends" and "Frasier" to dramas like "Charmed" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," were powered by guest stars in the same way the larger Hollywood machine is powered by the legions of extras, bit players, and uncredited walk-ons who fill each frame with glorious humanity. Of all the episodes of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," one of the most memorable and ambitious has to be the season 4 episode "Hush." A set of horrifying demons come to Sunnydale and steal the voices of the entire town, forcing the Scoobies to take them down while communicating through pantomime. Some of the actors thought that the episode would be a walk in the park — there would be fewer lines to memorize, after all — but it ended up being one of the most challenging episodes of the series.
Season 4 is one of the more aimless seasons of "Buffy" and is often considered to be one of the worst. As a coming-of-age series, Buffy leaving high school was a huge turning point for the show and left controversial series creator Joss Whedon feeling the need to shake things up. When the idea for a silent episode came to him, it seemed...

Sarah Michelle Gellar gave us some of the most unforgettable television moments of all time when she starred as Buffy in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but she wasn't having quite as much fun making the show as the viewers had watching it. Shooting over 140 episodes over seven seasons of a network series is no small feat, and it consumed a lot of time in Gellar's teens and early 20s. That's not to mention series creator Joss Whedon, who was accused of being emotionally abusive on set by several of Gellar's co-stars.
Her fellow series regulars recognized the level of pressure she was under as the star of the show. Her co-star Alyson Hannigan, who played Buffy's best friend, Willow, remembered that Gellar started to run out of steam early on, which the star herself later admitted. So when Andy Cohen asked the "How I Met Your Mother" actress what season...

The world of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" returned last week — but it looks a lot different than the last time fans saw it. Or, rather, it sounds different: the show's revival comes not in the form of another TV season, but an Audible exclusive audio series called "Slayers." It's a clever way to get the monster-fighting band back together, all while side-stepping issues that might arise with revisiting this world — like supposedly immortal monsters aging with their actors.
"Slayers" also gives fan favorite "Buffy" castmates a chance to reinvent their characters, as it features a wild, universe-hopping plot that sees dead characters revived, scripts from Tara actress Amber Benson and novelist Christopher Golden (original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved with the project), and, most thrilling of all: Cordelia Chase, vampire slayer. Yep, Charisma Carpenter is returning to the Buffyverse after two decades away, and she's taking on an...

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" might have left TV screens 20 years ago, but the exploits of the slayer and her compatriots didn't end in 2003. Take for instance how many of the events from the much-derided "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie were re-written back into Buffy lore, so to speak, in a 1999 comic book series by Dan Brereton and Christopher Golden entitled "The Origin." Co-signed by "Buffy" creator and showrunner Joss Whedon, "The Origin" basically retold the 1992 film in a way that fit Whedon's original vision and the show's tone. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was once the most progressive show on television, so how is it possible that someone with a long history of mistreating women could create a long-standing feminist masterpiece? Series creator Joss Whedon was once at the top of the world of superhero fans and comic book nerds, many of whom fell in love with his beautiful blonde avatar, Buffy, a demon-fighting highschooler with superhuman strength and agility. The show's heroine was a uniquely powerful depiction of a ditzy Valley girl, turning the then-contemporary damsel-in-distress archetype on its head. But we've since learned that, behind the scenes, Whedon was doing everything he could to make the women of the show feel powerless.

Amber Benson wanted nothing more than to see Cordelia Chase become a vampire slayer, so when the opportunity presented itself, the Buffy actress-turned-writer didn’t hesitate to make her dream come true.
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story — an Audible Original that releases all nine episodes Thursday, Oct. 12 — follows Spike (voiced by James Marsters) as he goes deep undercover in Los Angeles, convincing the forces of darkness that he’s back to his evil ways. There, he meets 16-year-old newly appointed slayer Indira (The Equalizer’s Laya DeLeon Hayes) and a parallel universe’s Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), who is the one-and-only slayer back home.

The cast of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is ready to reclaim the narrative. Through the new Audible original, “Slayers: A Buffyverse Story,” several actors from the acclaimed drama series are back together to play their beloved characters once again — this time in an audio original podcast.
“Slayers” is co-written by Amber Benson, who portrayed Tara in “Buffy,” and Christopher Golden, who has penned multiple books in the “Buffyverse.” Before the Covid pandemic, Benson began calling her former costars to see who might want to be involved, focusing on the characters she felt weren’t serviced enough in the original show. She also wanted to find a way to highlight what it means to be a slayer who is also a woman of color.
That’s where Laya DeLeon Hayes came in, portraying 16-year-old Slayer Indira Nunnally in the new series, which takes place in 2013, 10 years after “Buffy” ended. James Marsters returns as Spike,...

Since "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" staked its last monster 20 years ago, the franchise hasn't exactly rested peacefully. Continuation comics, novels, and planned reboots have kept the Buffyverse alive, but its legacy has also been complicated by allegations of workplace misconduct and bullying made against series creator Joss Whedon.
The latest installment of the world of Buffy, the Audible series "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story," aims to course-correct that, reuniting key cast members for the first time ever to tell a story Whedon plays no part in. To say the writer is nowhere to be found here would be inaccurate, though, as "Slayers" -- an intermittently charming, sometimes forced new chapter -- is all about overcoming the toxic influence of the past.
The story takes place roughly 12 years after Buffy Summers instilled all potential slayers with their full power, breaking a cycle of pain and isolation that afflicted centuries worth of chosen teen girls.

Twenty years have gone by since the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series reached the end of its seven season run – but on October 12th, Audible will be releasing the original audio drama Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which features the voices of several Buffy cast members and continues the story of the show, picking up ten years after the events of the series finale.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member Amber Benson wrote Slayers: A Buffyverse Story with Christopher Golden. Benson and Golden also directed the audio show with Kc Wayland. Slayers promises to bring Buffy fans “a fresh story and a new world, filled with horror, heart, humor, and surprises at every turn.“

In every generation, there is a chosen one… who inspires hours upon hours of entertainment. Twenty years after the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Buffyverse is still expanding, with the franchise’s first-ever audio drama on the way. The upcoming Audible production Slayers: A Buffyverse Story reunites Buffy stars James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, Danny Strong, James Charles Leary, and Juliet Landau for “a fresh story and a new world, filled with horror, heart, humor, and surprises at every turn,” as Audible said in a press release. Written by Benson and Christopher Golden — more on him later — Slayers follows vampire Spike (Marsters) into a parallel reality where Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers never existed and Cordelia (Carpenter) is the one and only Slayer. And Cordelia needs Spike’s help with a big problem named Drusilla (Landau)… That audio drama premieres...

Twenty years after audiences watched Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) slay her last demon, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is set to return with a multiverse-style sequel. The new story won't be a TV show, but an audio series called "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story" -- a format switch that, while perhaps less common than a straightforward revival series, has been done successfully before by at least one other big fandom genre show, "Orphan Black."
There are a lot of reasons worth getting excited about "Slayers." Eight original series cast members are returning for the new project, including Emma Caulfield Ford (Anya), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Anthony Head (Giles), James Marsters (Spike), and more. Amber Benson is also returning despite her character Tara's controversial death in season 6 of the original show -- apparently the new series will play with alternate realities, allowing her character's reappearance. Plus, "Slayers" seems to be listening to...

Calling all Scoobies — it's time to return to Sunnydale and catch up with all of our favorite demon-fighting, vampire-slaying heroes. Audible is releasing a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" original audio story set 10 years after the finale of the beloved television series with a number of the original cast members reprising their roles. The series had previously been continued in Dark Horse's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" comics, though those aren't considered to be canon by many, and this new audio original could be the first canon entry in the Buffyverse for two decades.

The "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" musical episode rules. This was true when it debuted in 2001 and it's still true today, despite the ambivalence that now comes with being a "Buffy" fan in light of series creator Joss Whedon's extensively documented bad behavior. It took me a few years after allegations against Whedon dropped to find my way back to one of my favorite shows of all time -- and untangle the impression it had on me from the misdeeds of the artist most closely connected to it. But as Jamie Gerber pointed out in a 2022 /Film piece, there's a tremendous amount of talent worth celebrating associated with the show, from writers like Marti Noxon and Drew Goddard to performers like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Carpenter.
"Once More, With Feeling" is, in many ways, a showcase for what the show's performers can do. Like most of "Buffy" it's remembered for its snappy writing,...

In “Subspace Rhapsody,” the penultimate episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” second season, a mishap involving a recording of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” and a “subspace fold” causes what the franchise’s technobabble labels an “improbability field:” a glitch in reality that forces the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to behave like they’re in a musical, bursting into song at inopportune times. Immediately after the big stage-setting ensemble number, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) holds a meeting to figure out what happened, and security officer La’an (Christina Chong) rolls her eyes and asks “What’s next? More improbability, or will we suddenly just poof into bunnies?”
The joke, in the context of the episode, feels slightly random and out of step with the show’s typical sense of humor. But for anyone who has ever watched “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the reference to bunnies instantly...

Alyson Hannigan was brilliant in the role of Willow Rosenberg on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, which ran for a total of seven seasons and 144 episodes, beginning in 1997 and wrapping up in 2003… But she didn’t join the show until the pilot was reshot, replacing the previously cast Riff Regan as Willow. And during an interview with Shut Up Evan, Melanie Lynskey confirmed that she was also a potential Willow.
Interviewer Evan Ross Katz had been told by Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar that the show’s creator Joss Whedon had envisioned Lynskey (only known from Heavenly Creatures at the time) as Willow when he was writing the pilot script, but Lynskey, who is from New Zealand, couldn’t audition because there was an issue with her visa. "Hush" is the scariest episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and I will fight any naysayers on that. "The Body," where Buffy's mom dies, is the saddest and most impactful, in my opinion, but this one ... creepy, smiling men that float towards you, steal your voice, and then stab you ... there is no way to watch this and not shudder. I apologize for any nightmares the picture above gives you. I assure you, I have already collected all my old stuffed animals, checked under my bed for odd boxes, and turned on every light in the house.
If you haven't watched the tenth episode of the fourth season, I implore you not to do it alone. In "Hush," everyone is dealing with communication issues. Tara (Amber Benson in the character's debut) struggles to stand up for herself at a coven meeting while Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Riley (Marc Blucas...

We've had plenty of them, of course, but there is a prevailing thought about TV couples; if you hook them up and make them happy, people will stop watching the show. The first story that comes to mind is David Addison (Bruce Willis) and Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) from "Moonlighting." The show was based on the angry flirtation between the two of them, and when they finally got together, the show suffered, both in audience opinion and ratings. There were other reasons for the end of "Moonlighting," but that is often cited as the main one. "Cheers" is another popular one that suffered once the main characters Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) got together. It's something "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon cites as the reason Buffy's relationships never really went well.
Whedon spoke about this in a 2003 interview with Salon.
