The films in contention for the 2023 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” Our current odds show “Elvis” (10/3) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (37/10), “Babylon” (9/2), “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2), and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is her 12th and could result in her fourth win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), and “Cruella” (2022). She would be only the fifth costumer to achieve as many victories, after Edith Head, Irene Sharaff, Milena Canonero, and Colleen Atwood. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011).

In the past 55 years in which India has been sending entries for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, it has been on just three occasions that the selected movies, despite some of them being critically acclaimed both in India and abroad, have made it to the nominations shortlist.
A dismal record, if any, calling in question the selection process.
The three films on this rather bald list are the Nargis-Sunil Dutt classic “Mother India” (1957), Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay” (1988) and Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Aamir Khan-starrer “Lagaan” (2001).
This year, the official selection — “Chhello Show”, Nalin Kumar Pandya aka Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film — again lost out to a strong field comprising, among others, the German World War I drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Golden Globe winner, “Argentina, 1985” (the historical drama from Argentina around the fight waged by a group of lawyers against the South American’s...

Even though India ranks amongst the top as far as churning out movies are concerned, the much coveted Oscar trophy still remains a dream for many Indian stars. However an exception to this is the trio of Bhanu Athaiya, Ar Rahman and Resul Pookutty, who won the Oscars trophy for their exemplary contribution to cinema. However, after Bhanu returned her award to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Los Angeles last week for safekeeping, news is that Resul Pookutty also might follow her footsteps. The reason behind this decision to return the award is not just the apparent lack of recognition from the Indian government but also the apparent lack of security. According to the ace sound designer, India severely lacks the initiative to preserve historical or even note worthy achievements. In his statement, Resul points out that though he may keep his award in a bank safe,...

Back in 1983, Bhanu Athaiya won an Oscar for best costume design for his work on "Gandhi." She was the first Indian to win the award, but is now fearing that India is no place for an Oscar, which she fears will be stolen. "I do not trust anyone in India to keep it. To protect her Oscar, Athaiya made plans to travel to Los Angeles in 2013 to personally hand over the Oscar to the Academy for safekeeping.
