One of the Assistant Costume Designers on the Martin Scorsese directed Killers of the Flower Moon is alleging that Apple Studios and the Costume Designers Guild worked hand in hand to erase her contribution to the multi-nominated Lily Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro starring film.
“Throughout the multitude of award nominations for Kotfm, Apple teamed up with West and CDG to promote the film and its costume design,” says Kristi Marie Hoffman of the studio, the guild and costume designer Jacqueline West in her six-claim complaint filed in LA Superior Court today (read it here).
“Despite Hoffman being the primary Acd and completing most of the research and costume design for the film, the Defendants not only specifically excluded her involvement in its promotion but also completely ignored her work and instead represented to the public at large that the costume design work, her work, was the product of...

Everywhere on social media, you read comments from readers lamenting our modern culture.
They long for the good old days when comedy was offensive, antiheroes said whatever they were thinking, and actors were judged by their undeniable talent rather than the biggest mistakes of their careers.
Plotlines were more important than representation. Complicated characters were more important than "Wokeness."
Back then, they say, it didn't matter if a character was black or gay. All that mattered was the story.
We watched because a filmmaker had something important to say, not because every race and sexual orientation appeared and was treated with respect.
We listened because regardless of what anyone said about a comedian, at least he was funny!
Unsurprisingly, many of the same social critics would also say no movies from the 2010-2030 era will be remembered as classics 20 or 30 years from now.

Martin Scorsese has a new smash hit on his hands. No, it’s not a Chanel ad or an epic Oscar nominee but yet another TikTok video courtesy of daughter Francesca Scorsese. But this one stands out in how it gives fans a look at his movie shrine, complete with vintage posters, props and, of course, a home theater.
The video is a play on TikTok’s We Are trend, with a general format that goes something like: “We’re ____, of course we _____.” The TikTok trend can be a fun way to poke fun at or champion cliches and stereotypes, but when Scorsese does it, it’s purely out of love for cinema…and directing his daughter. In the first clip, Francesca begins with, “We’re movie lovers, of course we have film posters all over our house.” Unfortunately, she doesn’t give the right delivery for hyping The Paradine Case...

It looks like the third film for the Godzilla x Kong franchise won’t be happening soon after director Adam Wingard exits the project. The latest installment, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has proved to be a tremendous success for Legendary Pictures.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire / Legendary Pictures
Wingard co-wrote and helmed The New Empire with the intention of telling more stories from the famed MonsterVerse. He also revealed he’s working on another project which may have caused the delay of another Godzilla movie.

Her performance in Martin Scorsese's Killers Of The Flower Moon saw Lily Gladstone become part of a global conversation – and got her a groundbreaking Oscar nomination. As she tells us, though, she's only just getting started...
Lily Gladstone has been putting her feet up.
You’d be forgiven for assuming that Gladstone — the first Native American actress to have been nominated for an Academy Award — has a lot on her plate. And she has, but at home in Seattle, post-Oscars, she’s spent some well-earned time on the sofa, specifically watching The Bear Season 2. She’s not likely to be hanging around watching Carmy in his Chicago kitchen for too long, though.
After her staggering, soulful performance as Mollie Burkhart, the beleaguered woman at the centre of a vast murder plot in Martin Scorsese’s epic drama Killers Of The Flower Moon — and the Oscar nomination to go with...

Martin Scorsese’s epic Killers of the Flower Moon shined a light on one of the lesser-known dark chapters of American history – the wholesale slaughter of dozens of members of the Osage Indian Nation by their supposed guardians, neighbors and friends. A dramatic gut-punch of a film, it was adapted by Scorsese and Eric Roth from the 2017 David Grann book of the same name. The book took about five years to research, and the film took just as long to arrive on the big screen, with both taking great pains to authentically communicate the tragic nature of the Osage murders. While the film obviously takes a handful of liberties necessary to dramatize Grann’s book, by all accounts it’s an incredibly faithful telling of the story, accurately recreating the book’s major events as realistically as possible. Let’s take a look at What Really Happened to Killers of the Flower Moon.

One of the most gripping elements of 1976’s Taxi Driver — which we still debate nearly 50 years later — is the ending. The ambiguity for many has left a number of questions: Did Travis survive the shootout? Was the final scene with him and Betsy just a fantasy? According to Robert De Niro, not only did Travis survive (and perhaps his encounter with Betsy real), but the character still had a number of moments worth exploring in a sequel to Taxi Driver.
According to Taxi Driver scribe Paul Schrader (via IndieWire), he never once wanted to expand on that world, saying it was all the doing of De Niro. “Now, I don’t want to slag De Niro, but a lot of his decisions sometimes have financial motivations. I’m sure someone had said to him, ‘You know, if you do ‘Taxi Driver 2,’ they can pay.’” Apparently, director Martin Scorsese — of course...

Rarely in recent decades has the festival circuit been as disrupted as it has in the past 12 months. A confluence of local and global issues — from war to inflation, political unrest to societal shifts — have created a perfect storm for many of these vital cultural platforms, leading to funding shortfalls, staff losses, major PR headaches and in some cases cancellation. Amid shifts in consumer and industry behavior, there are also broader existential questions being asked about the role and potency of festivals.
Since last year’s Cannes, we’ve seen flashpoints or upheaval at Sundance, Berlin, Hot Docs, Thessaloniki, IDFA, El Gouna, Cairo, Busan, Odessa and others. Questions have been hanging over the likes of Venice and Toronto but both have made positive announcements in recent weeks: the former by re-upping Alberto Barbera, the latter by confirming a cash injection to bolster its market.

The name Harry Hole may sound like a joke to a lot of English speakers, but Norwegian author Jo Nesbø has managed to build a bestselling series of crime novels around the character – whose last name is meant to be pronounced as “Hoo-leh.” There have been thirteen books in the Harry Hole series to date, with the seventh one having previously been brought to the screen as the 2017 film The Snowman… which, despite having Tomas Alfredson at the helm, Martin Scorsese on board as a producer, and a strong cast that included Michael Fassbender as Hole, did not turn out well. (You can read our 3/10 review Here.) Now Nesbø is seeking redemption for his character by teaming with Working Title and the Netflix streaming service for a series called Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole, which is set to star Tobias Santelmann (The Last Kingdom) as Hole. Deadline has unveiled an image of Santelmann in character,...

One would think Christopher Nolan holds the ultimate power over his movies. Thus, it would be rare for anyone to challenge his vision. Yet, Leonardo DiCaprio, being Leonardo DiCaprio, achieved the impossible and persuaded Nolan to alter his approach to crafting Inception. [Editor’s note: this list was originally published in May 2023. It has since been updated with new films to crack the Cannes 5-minute mark.]
Each Cannes Film Festival is accompanied by the annual debate about whether the length of a film’s standing ovation is an accurate measure of its quality. But whether you see the practice of tracking ovation times as a fun cinephile tradition or an oversimplified waste of time, there’s no denying that it happens every year. For certain film industry observers, the number of minutes of applause that a buzzy movie receives on the Croisette is as significant as the first wave of reviews.
Cannes audiences have long been known for their bold responses to new movies. There’s virtually no such thing as a lukewarm response at the world’s biggest film festival — or at least, nothing that an American audience would recognize as lukewarm. Virtually all films receive either a standing ovation or loud boos. The over the top responses are a ritual in and of themselves,...

"So, when you're inside a role, do you destroy who you are?" "No, no – you reach into yourself... you find yourself. And only after that, are you free to be who you really are." There's another Martin Scorsese-directed advertisement to enjoy if you're into these kind of videos. Chanel just launched a new ad for their male perfume line called Bleu de Chanel, featuring celebrated actor Timothée Chalamet as the global ambassador. "The perfume of a man who chooses his way." These kind of promotions always seem so stale and strange - this works on people? The ad was shot by Scorsese and features Chalamet dealing with a late night talk show appearance, discussing his work as an actor and allowing himself to "be who you really are." Chanel adds that it's "an actor's conflict between celebrity and staying true to himself." It's only a 90 second video and goes by pretty fast,...

David Schickele’s Bushman opens with Gabriel (Paul Eyam Nzie Okpokam), a young Nigerian immigrant, walking down a San Francisco highway and conspicuously balancing a pair of shoes on his head while trying to thumb a ride. The image announces the film’s neorealist intentions, alluding to postwar Italian films’ on-location, street-oriented settings, and even puns on the title of Vittorio De Sica’s Shoeshine. Which isn’t to say that Bushman intends to turn neorealism on its head exactly. Rather, it aims to consider how the contexts the bred neorealism might relate to the late-1960s, when the United States was at war in Vietnam and Nigeria was in year two of a civil war following its decolonization in 1960.
After a playful opening sequence in which Gabriel is picked up by a motorcyclist (Mike Slyre) who looks as though he just stepped off the set of Easy Rider, the...

Roger Corman was a legend of filmmaking, and his contributions to the medium are unparalleled. He was known for low budgets and short shoots that made him an easy-to-work-with director, and for making B-movies that hit big with audiences. Most importantly, Corman mentored many of our greatest filmmakers, spreading his influence far and wide as those mentees broke big and started influencing others themselves. Take Martin Scorsese, one of the best living directors, who continues to be greatly influenced by Corman's work. But Corman's influence is also felt in more lowbrow cinema, like the work of Joe Dante and James Cameron.
Indeed, Corman's influence is still very much felt today, like in the way "The Fast and Furious" got its name. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, producer Neal Moritz explained that the 2001 franchise starter was initially going to be titled "Race Wars," or maybe "Racer X," or "Street Wars." The filmography of Alfred Hitchcock is obviously full of movies following the wrongly accused men on the run, including The Trouble with Harry (1955), North by Northwest (1959) and Frenzy (1972). The Master of Suspense plays with this motif artfully, creating a sense of unease and misunderstanding of whether his heroes are really so innocent.
However, one of Hitchcock’s movies exploring the same theme stands out among all of them, as it was drawn from the real-life story, described in the book The True Story of Christopher Emmanuel Balestrero by Maxwell Anderson. Apart from that, it’s worth a watch because it was picked by Steven Spielberg, the giant of the cinema industry.
The film’s plot centers on a musician finding himself in trouble of being unable to help his wife pay for her dental procedure. He tries to borrow money from their insurance firm, but gets mistakenly caught by the...

Music is one of the main keys to the success of a movie, as it helps to set the tone and enhances the viewers’ experience. It can even happen that films become overshadowed by the songs written and recorded specifically for them, and people tend to forget that they were originally soundtracks that lost any association with their origins.
Here are 5 dramas surpassed in popularity by their music themes, according to Reddit.
Dangerous Minds (1995)
Michelle Pfeiffer’s underrated gem presumably comes first in this respect, as everybody knows Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio, while the movie is unfairly forgotten. In fact, the story of a teacher taking up a job in East Palo Alto, a racially segregated and economically deprived city, is worth a try, apart from its cultish main song.
Chariots of Fire (1981)

AMC Networks has given Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas a content warning over “language and/or cultural stereotypes.”
The advisory was added to the beginning of the 1990 film, which occasionally plays on AMC’s television channel as well as their streaming service, AMC+. The full message reads: “This film includes language and/or cultural stereotypes that are inconsistent with today’s standards of inclusion and tolerance and may offend some viewers.”
AMC added the content warning to Goodfellas in 2020, as well as to several other films — but now, some folks are shocked to discover the message four years later. “In 2020, we began adding advisories in front of certain films that include racial or cultural references that some viewers might find offensive,” an AMC representative told the New York Post after the advisory recently went viral.

“We never quite know if his intentions are good or manipulative… that is very appealing to work with because it allows you to keep people guessing,” remarks Matthias Schoenaerts about his starring role on the HBO limited series “The Regime.” The actor plays Corporal Zubak, a man with a violent past who is summoned to work at the palace for the chancellor of a fictional European nation. As he describes, the character is “somebody trying to move from dark to light,” who is “coming out of a very dark place” and “gets the opportunity to really profoundly change his life.” As a result, “He’s not one dimensional.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

If Heat and The Insider are agreed upon as Michael Mann’s all-time best films, what is the director’s most underrated feature to date? Is it Thief? The Keep? Manhunter? Public Enemies? Nah. There’s only one acceptable answer: 2004’s criminally overlooked nocturnal neo-noir Collateral. Featuring a rare villainous turn by Tom Cruise and a restrained Oscar-nominated performance by Jamie Foxx, the L.A. crime story was the first film in history to utilize the Viper FilmStream High Definition Camera. The digital format that David Fincher would later adopt for use on Zodiac and Benjamin Button. Beyond the cutting-edge technology, the remote locations Mann and his production team gave viewers a much different glimpse of Los Angeles away from the glamor of Hollywood and into the seedy, sinister parts of town rarely seen on the big screen.

Ti West is channeling Paul Schrader for his trilogy ender “MaXXXine.” Oh, and “The Terminator.”
Writer/director West told Total Film that the 1985 Hollywood-set horror film is just as “hardcore” as Schrader’s filmography, with high concept tie-ins of “The Terminator” and “Vice Squad.” Plus, of course, what “X” film is complete without a hint of giallo?

Terry Gilliam has been to Cannes with three of his own films since 1983, but one of his favorite memories of the festival takes him back to that very first time, at the 36th edition, as the co-writer and co-star of Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. Along with Graham Chapman and the film’s director Terry Jones, he’d emerged from the Carlton hotel’s iconic entrance, then bedecked with promotion for the upcoming Bond movie Octopussy, to encounter a camera crew. Jones started grabbing people at random, shouting, “Who Ees Monty Python???” in a ridiculous foreign accent, and got so carried away that, when they reached the hotel’s famous terrace, he accidentally did it to Gilliam too.
The crowd loved it, and the day only grew stranger. Out on the Carlton’s jetty, they gave an interview to British news channel ITN, with Jones hiding behind Graham...

For the last two years in a row, one of the major premieres at the Cannes Film Festival has been a mainstream film that works with the trappings and tropes of the Western genre. But there’s not much connection between Martin Scorsese’s Oklahoma-set 1920s period piece “Killers of the Flower Moon,” one of the hits of last year’s festival, and Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga,” which had its premiere at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Sunday evening.
For Scorsese, approaching that location and time period meant thinking hard about what he could bring to a genre that he felt had peaked with directors like John Ford and Howard Hawks in the 1940s and ’50s, and essentially been ended by Sam Peckinpah’s revisionist Western “The Wild Bunch” in the late 1968s.

To most people, Michael Jackson‘s “Bad” is simply a cool pop song. Meanwhile, Quincy Jones felt it was divinely inspired. He discussed the creative process behind one of the King of Pop’s greatest albums.
Quincy Jones said he didn’t work on Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ for the money
During a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Jones was asked if he had a vision for the songs from Jackson’s Bad. “That’s not the way it works,” he replied. “You go song by song. The songs are the power. They take it home.
“From what I learned, the melody is the voice of God,” he added. That’s what you look for. I have never ever made records for money or fame. That’s how you blow it. ‘Cause God walks out of the room if you’re going after money. And you don’t know how to...

However, he was quite close to working with Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, until scheduling disagreements forced the filmmaker to find his replacement.

I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion anymore to say trigger warnings have gone too far. When you have people like Dame Judi Dench complaining about them, maybe the plot has gotten lost somewhat, so to speak. While many have taken issue with the wrong-headed warnings before movies like Blazing Saddles (a famously anti-racist movie) and the pretty tame early James Bond movies, perhaps the moment trigger warnings truly overstepped happened last week, when AMC aired Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas and attached the following disclaimer:
“This film includes language and/or cultural stereotypes that are inconsistent with today’s standards of inclusion and tolerance and may offend some viewers.”
Here’s the tweet that started it all:

Margot Robbie is one of the most prolific actresses working in Hollywood today. She created history when she starred in last year’s Barbie, which became the highest-grossing movie of the year and broke multiple records. She also co-produced the film under her Lucky Chap Entertainment production company.
Robbie has also been widely regarded as one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood. But reportedly that did not save her from experiencing a bad date. During a press meet for Suicide Squad, Robbie revealed that she had once been on a date that was so bad that she asked out the waiter instead to escape from it.

If you've ever watched any behind-the-scenes footage from "The Shining," you might remember Jack Nicholson working himself up into a frenzy prior to shooting the famous "Here's Johnny" scene. As poor Shelly Duvall quietly finds her way into the bathroom, Jack can be seen seething as he descends into the deranged mental space required for the scene. No wonder "The Shining" changed Shelly Duvall forever.
But while Nicholson's process for journeying to the outer edges of sanity involved jumping in place, repeating the words, "Come on!," and almost accidentally giving the Pa a concussion with a prop axe, not all actors follow that same method. We all know the punishing physical lengths to which Christian Bale goes in order to truly feel like the characters he portrays. As the actor told The Guardian, "I try to get as distant as possible. Otherwise, I can't do it. It's helpful not to look like yourself.

Paul Schrader is having a great time at Cannes, where the screenwriter/director is showcasing his latest film, ‘Oh, Canada‘. Speaking with IndieWire, Schrader revisited the pitch for a sequel to his seminal film with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, Taxi Driver.
Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver/ Columbia Pictures
Robert De Niro had pitched an idea to Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader, one that was immediately shot down. Schrader talked about how De Niro’s decisions were sometimes colored with the prospect of financial gains, which he opined could have also been the reason that De Niro wanted to make a sequel to the film.

Legendary producer and director Roger Corman, who died recently at age 98, had an immeasurable impact on American cinema as we know it. The number of actors, writers, and directors who learned their craft on a Corman production is staggering, and he was known for giving people chances to prove themselves on the low-budget pictures he either produced or directed himself. Tons of notable names went through the so-called "Corman school," including James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, and Joe Dante, just to name a few.
Three-time Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson is another significant alumnus of the Corman school of filmmaking — in fact, his very first movie, "The Cry Baby Killer," was a Corman production, and it provided Nicholson the first of many starring roles across his incredible career. The film follows a young man who thinks he's committed murder outside of a local hang-out restaurant,...

Filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan are known for pushing the boundaries in blockbuster filmmaking as they bring in original ideas and mount them on a large scale. While the directors have grown to be critical favorites, they also seem to have won the box office race with their original films.
Among these legends, Christopher Nolan seems to have gained the top spot in one category. With four of his original films grossing over $500 million at the box office, Nolan beat Spielberg and Roland Emmerich to gain the top spot. The Oscar-winner is the only filmmaker to have achieved this feat with movies that are not comic adaptations, reboots, or sequels.

Jesse Plemons has become an undisputed auteur’s favorite. The 36-year-old star’s beguiling unshowiness onscreen has landed him memorable parts in films from Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master), Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, The Post), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon), Charlie Kaufman (I’m Thinking of Ending Things), Adam McKay (Vice) and Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), among so many others. Arguably even more viewers know him from his indelible work on the small screen, which began with his breakthrough role on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, continued through AMC’s landmark hit series Breaking Bad and culminated with an Emmy nomination for FX’s Fargo, where he met his wife, actress and co-star Kirsten Dunst.
Plemons touched down for the Cannes Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the acclaimed Greek director’s follow-up to his multi-Oscar-winning period fantasy Poor Things.

The rules of cinema imply that you should interest a viewer soon enough unless you want him to drop your movie. There are, however, seemingly perfect opening scenes, which manage not only to attract, but also to introduce you to the characters and the setting in the best way possible.

Martin Scorsese has time and again proven why he ranks amongst the best filmmakers of today and his work will certainly be talked about for centuries to come. From Goodfellas (1990) to Shutter Island (2010), Martin Scorsese has a ton of gems in his portfolio but a sixteen-minute-long short film will remain to be the most unique work of his career.

Writing on Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island in 2010, Anthony Lane whipped a quote from Umberto Eco: “Two cliches make us laugh but a hundred clichés move us, because we sense dimly that the clichés are talking among themselves, celebrating a reunion.” Eco’s words resonate even stronger in Christmas Eve at Miller’s Point, a fascinating simulacrum of festive movies in which references to annual favorites are thrust together with about as much delicacy as the family it tenderly depicts. The island isn’t Shutter but Long, specifically a small town in Suffolk County where we meet four generations of the Bolsanos, a blue-collar family going through the motions and rituals of their annual get-together, adoring and enduring each other as best they can in what might be their last year in the family home. The filmmaker behind this delicate, strange, reflective bauble is Tyler Taormina, co-founder of the...

When we talk about dedication to a particular role, method acting often springs to the forefront as an emblem of an actor’s commitment to embodying a character, and who better to exemplify this than Andrew Garfield?
But what happens when this technique, sometimes polarizing among thespians, is taken to new heights in preparation for a role under the keen eye of a storied director? The Paul Schrader Renaissance began the moment “First Reformed” debuted to the director’s best reviews in at least 15 years, back in 2017. The spiritual trilogy formed around it — “The Card Counter” and “Master Gardener” — have fostered in a new generation’s mind this frankly narrow vision of what constitutes a Paul Schrader movie: men in rooms, pens across diaries, peculiar revenge plots.

Paul Schrader may have found a trick for cheating death: Just make more movies. Amid some serious health struggles over the past few years, the 77-year-old auteur and screenwriting legend has entered one of his most prolific phases.

Corman completely revolutionized the film industry, not only with his independent spirit and penchant for low-budget fare, but also serving as a launchpad for some of cinema's greatest creatives, including Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson, and Penelope Spheeris, and that's just scratching the surface.
Known by many for his hundreds of produced films, Corman was also a well-decorated director in his own right, helming 55 films before his death. Corman dabbled in any and all genres, with comedy, drama, horror, exploitation, monster, sci-fi, sexploitation, gothic, and action all well-represented throughout his filmography. In honor of the King of B-movies and one of the most prolific filmmakers of all time, here are his 10 best films as a director, ranked.

Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, the new drama that reunites the director with his American Gigalo star Richard Gere, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Friday night, where it was welcomed with a three-minute-plus standing ovation for Schrader and his team at the Grand Lumiere Theatre. With typical Canadian politeness, the crowd even applauded the film’s producers.
Before the premiere, Schrader and the cast of Oh, Canada, including Richard Gere, and Uma Thurman, but not Jacob Elordi, had climbed the red carpet steps up the Palais to the sounds of the Canadian national anthem. Among the famous faces in the audience at the theater was Nathalie Emmanuel.
While the creative team received a warm welcome, the film itself was less warmly received, with only polite applause and a perfunctory standing ovation for Schrader and his cast. But there was a collection of whoops and cheers, and at least one “bravo!

Hard to believe it has been 44 years since Paul Schrader and star Richard Gere last worked together on 1980’s seminal American Gigolo, a film that became not just a keystone in Gere’s celebrated career but also one for one Schrader’s as one of his earliest directorial credits. Of course he has written some of the great screenplays, particularly in his collaborations with Martin Scorsese on Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ and Taxi Driver. But it is what interests him now a half century later as a writer-director that continues to fascinate.
In recent years that has included insular works like The Card Counter, Master Gardener and the critically acclaimed First Reformed.
