In a scene worthy of one of his animated works, Terry Gillam took to a stage covered in crashed paper planes at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Sunday to receive its honorary Cristal award and give a masterclass about his animated works.
Gilliam was last in Annecy, where its audience has a tradition of bombarding the stage with paper planes, in 1975 with Miracle of Flight. The anarchic comedy about mankind’s different attempts to fly debuted in the shorts competition but did not win a prize.
“Do you know how long it’s taken me to get this f**king award… They’ve finally let me in… I think they know I might not be around next year,” joked the director as he received the trophy.

Nearly a lifetime ago, in 1975, Terry Gilliam submitted his five-minute short film “Miracle of Flight” to the Annecy Animation Festival in France.
An absurdist gem about homo sapiens’ disastrous desire to take to the skies — using the same cut-out technique made famous by the irreverent interstitials and opening credits Gilliam designed for the British sketch comedy series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” — the film screened, but won no prizes.
Suddenly, half a century later (as “Miracle of Flight” might put it), Annecy corrected the oversight by awarding Gilliam an Honorary Cristal. Turns out, it’s a much nicer trophy — considerably bigger and far easier to dust — awarded in appreciation of lifetime achievement in the field.
“Can you believe how long it has taken me to get this fucking award?” Gilliam joked in mock outrage. “I think they know I might not be around next year.” But the director of “Time Bandits,...

Bradley Cooper is one of the most accomplished actors working in Hollywood right now. While he gained fame for his comedies such as The Hangover series, he graduated to dramatic roles with films like American Sniper and Silver Linings Playbook. He even turned director with the musical romance A Star Is Born and last year’s Maestro.
Cooper opened up about his struggles as an up-and-coming actor in the business. He mentioned that he had once auditioned for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. The actor emotionally recounted how despite not getting the role, he cherished the letter that Mann sent him after his rejection which he has preserved to this day.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films are seen as technical masterpieces not only for the director’s unique vision in bringing Frank Herbert’s narratives to life, but also for the haunting score by one of the world’s prolific composers, Hans Zimmer. The musician’s soaring notes that brought the vast Arrakis sands to life, made viewers immerse themselves even more fervently into Herbert’s world.

Zimmer, who confessed to having an excellent working relationship with Villeneuve for the films, gave an interesting bit of trivia regarding the score for Dune 2. The composer revealed that he started working on the 2nd film even before the director gave him the green signal to do so, and secretly used a particular piece multiple times as an opener during his Europe tour.

Terry Gilliam is settling up his next project, and it sounds like a doozy. The Carnival at the End of Days will be a comedy in which God decides to wipe out humanity, and the only one who wants to save them is Satan, who will be played by none other than Johnny Depp.
Gilliam first pitched the idea last year, but he dropped a little more information about the project while speaking with Première at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival last month. In addition to Johnny Depp as Satan, The Carnival at the End of Days will also star Jeff Bridges as God alongside Adam Driver and Jason Momoa.
“[Jeff Bridges] will not be the God we are accustomed to,” Gilliam explained. “In the film, God is nature. But a nature that can speak to you. I’m going to need animation to bring him life, because in the scene with God,...

Terry Gilliam hasn’t shot a movie since 2018’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” a film that took him nearly 30 years to make. So let’s call the seven years between that movie and Gilliam’s upcoming “The Carnival At The End Of Days” a well-deserved break. The British filmmaker plans to shoot the new film this year, and Premiere reports it has quite the cast attached to it, led by none other than disgraced actor Johnny Depp.

Forrest Gump, helmed by Robert Zemeckis, became an instant hit in 1994, even though Hollywood insiders had doubts about its chances of success. The endearing portrayal of Forrest by Tom Hanks will commemorate its 30th anniversary next month.

John Waters’s Cry-Baby is the ideal companion piece to the filmmaker’s 1988 hit Hairspray. That film takes place in the early ’60s, against the backdrop of the civil rights movement, and deals in a lighthearted fashion with thorny issues of racial segregation, while Cry-Baby uses its mid-’50s setting to poke fun at class conflict in staid Eisenhower-era Baltimore. And both films are perfectly realized period pieces awash with the music of their respective eras: Hairspray focusing on soul and R&b, Cry-Baby packed with catchy rockabilly and doowop numbers.
Cry-Baby focuses on Wade Walker (Johnny Depp), the leader of a redoubtable gang of “drapes,” a Baltimorean spin on the greasers of the time. Events begin to echo Romeo and Juliet once Cry-Baby, who’s known for driving girls crazy for the way he’s able to shed a single tear, makes a play for Allison (Amy Locane), the...

Peter Ostrum has had only one acting credit to speak of, that of Charlie Bucket in the 1971 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s seminal novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. While the actor had a great time on set, it seemed that an acting career was not in the cards for the star, as he shifted careers to something as far from acting as salt is from being sweet.

Gore Verbinski’s delightful animated comedy western Rango is finally getting a (deep breath) 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release. Here’s what’s on the disc:
While it made a reasonable amount of money on its original release, the animated movie Rango also sat in a place where it was probably a little too odd for many youngsters, and needed word of mouth to lure in the older audience. Thankfully, it got a good chunk of that, and Rango also in the end earned Gore Verbinski (he of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies) an Academy Award too. Not bad for a film that he basically started putting together in his garage.
The film is, er, 13 years old now, which feels like just the right time to give it a 4K outing. Rango will be making its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut this summer, and should, in fairness, look gorgeous.

The film world is buzzing with both excitement and skepticism about Tinseltown’s beloved Johnny Depp’s forthcoming film, The Carnival at the End of Days. Fresh off the stir of his highly publicized court proceedings, the actor, 60, is set to embody a character as enigmatic as Satan in the Terry Gilliam-helmed flick.
So, The Carnival at the End of Days, which will also feature God, Adam, and Eve, is billed as an apocalyptic comedy by The Fisher King director. Also, note that this will be Depp’s re-entry into big-budget cinema after he settled his widely reported defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, two years ago.

Though there are mixed feelings among viewers regarding expectations and disdain for Depp’s flick, its ensemble cast—which includes notable actors like Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver, and Jason Momoa—may redefine the comedy genre.

Emotions are spilling over the edge on both sides even as they gear up for war. Daemon Targaryen, who needs to be a rock for his wife Rhaenyra, is himself falling apart as the past catches up to him.
Matt Smith claims that Daemon acts like a crazy person in the upcoming season as he is struggling to feel grief and come to terms with his brother’s death. Terry Gilliam adds Johnny Depp and Jeff Bridges to the cast of The Carnival At The End Of Days. More on the story here.
It’s been 2018 since Terry Gilliam (finally) released his long-cherished film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, after a prolonged – and then some – time trying to get the thing off the ground. The story of that particular production has been well told, not least in part by the superb documentary Lost In La Mancha, and since then, Gilliam has directed a stage production of Into The Woods, and has been noodling his next film.
It’s increasingly looking like that film will be The Carnival At The End Of Days, which he’s been talking about for several months now. It’s a story that sees Satan off in search of new humans to put before God as a new Adam and Eve. Gilliam’s not been shy of upsetting people,...

Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver, and Jason Momoa are set to star in a new movie directed by Terry Gilliam, titled The Carnival at the End of Days.
The news was confirmed by Gilliam himself in a recent interview with the French publication Premiere, in which he explained the premise of the film. “God decides to destroy humanity, and the only one trying to save us is Satan because he needs people in hell, otherwise he won’t have a job for eternity,” he said. Depp and Bridges are set to play Satan and God, respectively.
“It will be very funny for those who like to be offended,” Gilliam said. Elsewhere, he expanded on what he has in mind for Bridge’s God character. “He will not be the God we are used to,” he said. “In the film, God is nature, but a nature that can talk to you.

The jury largely sided with Depp against Heard, finding her liable for defaming the actor with her op-ed article for The Washington Post. After several appeals, both parties reached a settlement. Depp and Heard’s attorneys weighed in on the trial during this two-year anniversary of the verdict.

While Robert Downey Jr.’s journey as the sardonic industrialist-turned-superhero may have come to a lamentable end, not all hope is lost. At least not for the astute London-based detective renowned for his logical prowess and brilliant skills.

That’s right, Downey Jr. may very well make a comeback as the world-famous detective, and his wife, Susan Downey Jr. most certainly has her fingers crossed for it.
Will Robert Downey Jr. Return As the Ingenious Detective?
Much like Iron Man – a character that continues to live in fans’ hearts to this very date – Arthur Conan Doyle’s eminent creation of Sherlock Holmes is inarguably one of a kind. And when someone as gifted as Robert Downey Jr. takes on the character, well, that’s one surefire way to leave an indelible mark on the audience.

One of the most enigmatic actors out there, Johnny Depp had a somewhat modest start as a regular on the TV series “21 Jump Street,” Depp has put together a remarkably diverse collection of film roles, most of which have one thing in common — he is drawn to playing outcasts or people who are on the edges of society who go their own way — and going his own way is certainly something that’s been a hallmark of this much-awarded actor’s career.
In Depp’s almost four-decade (beginning with 1984’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street”), he has earned a remarkable 10 Golden Globe Award nominations, winning the Best Actor prize for the 2007 musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” That film also garnered Depp his third Academy Award nomination (along with 2003’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and 2004’s “Finding Neverland”). 2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The films that screened last year included David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.

Variety is reporting that among the films that are being rumored for screenings is the Todd Phillips follow-up to the Joaquin Phoenix reimagining of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime. Well, it’s the entertainment industry where interactions often become an instant viral sensation. For example, last year, we witnessed a moment of miscommunication that actually sent ripples through social media. Amber Heard’s friend, supermodel Cara Delevingne, found herself amidst a storm of controversy for what many saw as a rude reply to Formula One legend Martin Brundle during a pre-race grid walk.
Cara Delevingne in Paper Towns | 20th Century Fox
However, could it be that Delevingne was unfairly judged? Brundle, known for his candid grid interviews, approached the London-born model for a “quick chat”. Although she politely excused herself, citing her inability to “hear anything”, the internet backlash was swift and severe.
But was this really a snub, or simply a misunderstanding amplified by the roar of the Grand Prix atmosphere?

There aren’t many movies like Cry Baby, just like there aren’t many directors and writers like John Waters. Both are unique and unlike anything that has come before or since.
Cry Baby hit screens at the beginning of a new decade, 1990, and celebrated a time many decades prior. It was skewering of teenage delinquent movies of the 50s with a healthy dose of weird, transgressive and musical theater. The overly dramatic time of a teenager and how rebel films of the 50s took that angst and upped to off the charts.
John Waters grew up with those films, and Cry Baby was his unique and amazing spin on that genre. Cry Baby tells the story of Wade “Cry Baby” Walker and his bizarre family and gang of Drapes. These are the weirdos and outcasts of Baltimore, the ones Waters himself would identify more with than the Squares of the story.

After John Waters made the once-improbable leap to the mainstream with “Hairspray,” a joyous film so devoid of filth that it was rated PG, he found himself in bizarre circumstances: He’d made a box-office success, a home-video smash, and his next film would be produced by Imagine Entertainment and released by Universal Pictures.
